SN 2012ij: A low-luminosity type Ia supernova and evidence for continuous distribution from 91bg-like explosion to normal ones

In this paper, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a subluminous type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2012ij, which has an absolute $B$-band peak magnitude $M_{B,\rm{max}}$ = $-$17.95 $\pm$ 0.15 mag. The $B$-band light curve exhibits a fast post-peak decline with $Δm_{15}(B)$ = 1.86 $\pm$ 0.05 mag. All the $R$ and $I$/$i$-band light curves show a weak secondary peak/shoulder feature at about 3 weeks after the peak, like some transitional subclass of SNe Ia, which could result from an incomplete merger of near-infrared (NIR) double peaks. The spectra are characterized by Ti~{\sc ii} and strong Si~{\sc ii} $λ$5972 absorption features that are usually seen in low-luminosity objects like SN 1999by. The NIR spectrum before maximum light reveals weak carbon absorption features, implying the existence of unburned materials. We compare the observed properties of SN 2012ij with those predicted by the sub-Chandrasekhar-mass and the Chandrasekhar-mass delayed-detonation models, and find that both optical and NIR spectral properties can be explained to some extent by these two models. By comparing the secondary maximum features in $I$ and $i$ bands, we suggest that SN 2012ij is a transitional object linking normal SNe Ia to typical 91bg-like ones. From the published sample of SNe Ia from the $Carnegie~Supernova~Project~II$ (CSP-II), we estimate that the fraction of SN 2012ij-like SNe Ia is not lower than $\sim$ 2%.

Deep Learning of DESI Mock Spectra to Find Damped Lyα Systems

We have updated and applied a convolutional neural network (CNN) machine learning model to discover and characterize damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) based on Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) mock spectra. We have optimized the training process and constructed a CNN model that yields a DLA classification accuracy above 99$\%$ for spectra which have signal-to-noise (S/N) above 5 per pixel. Classification accuracy is the rate of correct classifications. This accuracy remains above 97$\%$ for lower signal-to-noise (S/N) $\approx1$ spectra. This CNN model provides estimations for redshift and HI column density with standard deviations of 0.002 and 0.17 dex for spectra with S/N above 3 per pixel. Also, this DLA finder is able to identify overlapping DLAs and sub-DLAs. Further, the impact of different DLA catalogs on the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) is investigated. The cosmological fitting parameter result for BAO has less than $0.61\%$ difference compared to analysis of the mock results with perfect knowledge of DLAs. This difference is lower than the statistical error for the first year estimated from the mock spectra: above $1.7\%$. We also compared the performance of CNN and Gaussian Process (GP) model. Our improved CNN model has moderately 14$\%$ higher purity and 7$\%$ higher completeness than an older version of GP code, for S/N $>$ 3. Both codes provide good DLA redshift estimates, but the GP produces a better column density estimate by $24\%$ less standard deviation. A credible DLA catalog for DESI main survey can be provided by combining these two algorithms.

On the Correlation Between Atomic Gas and Bars in Galaxies

We analyze the correlation between properties of large-scale bars and atomic gas content of galaxies to explore the role of HI gas on bar evolution in galaxies. We show that the absolute bar size depends strongly on total stellar mass of galaxies and does not change significantly with HI gas fraction at fixed stellar mass. Furthermore, the physical size of the bar is small and nearly constant in high Hi gas fraction and low-mass galaxies, and becomes larger with increasing galactic stellar mass in low gas fraction galaxies. When the stellar masses are fixed, the relative bar length normalized to the disk shows a decrease with increasing HI gas fraction due to the larger disks in gas-richer galaxies. We measure the gas deficiency of the samples and find that the gas-rich galaxies have longer and stronger bars compared with the Hi gas-deficient galaxies at fixed stellar mass, especially for the massive ones. When splitting the samples into star forming and quiescent subgroups, the star forming galaxies tend to have longer bars than the quiescent ones at fixed stellar mass and gas deficiency. In addition, our results suggest two different types of bar properties, in which the bars in gas-rich galaxies grow longer but retain similar axial ratio over time, while they grow longer and fatter over time in gas-poor galaxies.

Galaxy Clusters from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. I. Cluster Detection

Based on the photometric redshift catalog of Zou H. et al. (2019), we apply a fast clustering algorithm to identify 540,432 galaxy clusters at $z\lesssim1$ in the DESI legacy imaging surveys, which cover a sky area of about 20,000 deg$^2$. Monte-Carlo simulations indicate that the false detection rate of our detecting method is about 3.1\%. The total masses of galaxy clusters are derived using a calibrated richness--mass relation that are based on the observations of X-ray emission and Sunyaev \& Zel'dovich effect. The median redshift and mass of our detected clusters are about 0.53 and $1.23\times10^{14} M_\odot$, respectively. Comparing with previous clusters identified using the data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we can recognize most of them, especially those with high richness. Our catalog will be used for further statistical studies on galaxy clusters and environmental effects on the galaxy evolution, etc.

New Determination of Fundamental Properties of Palomar 5 Using Deep DESI Imaging Data

The legacy imaging surveys for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument project provides multiplecolor photometric data, which are about 2 mag deeper than the SDSS. In this study, we redetermine the fundamental properties for an old halo globular cluster of Palomar 5 based on these new imaging data, including structure parameters, stellar population parameters, and luminosity and mass functions. These characteristics, together with its tidal tails, are key for dynamical studies of the cluster and constraining the mass model of the Milky Way. By fitting the King model to the radial surface density profile of Palomar 5, we derive the core radius of $r_c$ = 2.96' $\pm$ 0.11', tidal radius of $r_t$ = 17.99' $\pm$ 1.49', and concentration parameter of $c$ = 0.78 $\pm$ 0.04. We apply a Bayesian analysis method to derive the stellar population properties and get an age of 11.508 $\pm$ 0.027 Gyr, metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.798 $\pm$ 0.014, reddening of $E(B-V)$ = 0.0552 $\pm$ 0.0005, and distance modulus of $(m-M)_0$ = 16.835 $\pm$ 0.006. The main-sequence luminosity and mass functions for both the cluster center, and tidal tails are investigated. The luminosity and mass functions at different distances from the cluster center suggest that there is obvious spatial mass segregation. Many faint low-mass stars have been evaporated at the cluster center and the tidal tails are enhanced by low-mass stars. Both the concentration and relaxation times suggest that Palomar 5 is a totally relaxed system.

A Mysterious Ring in Dark Space?

We report the discovery of a low-surface-brightness (27.42 mag arcsec^(-2) in g band) nebula, which has a ring-like shape in the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS). Positive detections have been found in multiband data from far ultraviolet to far infrared, except the z band from BASS and W1, W2 from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. The reddening of the nebula E(B - V) ~ 0.02 mag is estimated from Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) 100 micron intensity and HI column density. With the help of the 3D reddening map from Pan-STARRS 1, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, and Gaia, the distance to the nebula of about 500 pc from Earth is derived. Such a low-surface-brightness nebula whose energy can be interpreted by the diffuse Galactic light could account for the optical counterpart of the infrared cirrus, which was detected by IRAS more than 30 yr ago. The ring-like structure might be the ultimate phase of an evolved planetary nebula, while the central white dwarf star has been ejected from the nebula for an unclear reason. On the other hand, the ring structure being a superposition of two close filaments might be another reasonable explanation. Considering the lack of spectroscopic data and uncertainty in the distance measurement, these interpretations need to be checked by future observations.

Physical Properties of H II Regions in M51 from Spectroscopic Observations

M51 and NGC 5195 is an interacting system that can be explored in great details with ground-based telescopes. The H II regions in M51 were observed using the 2.16 m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 6.5 m Multiple Mirror Telescope with spatial resolution of less than $\sim100$ pc. We obtain a total of 113 spectra across the galaxy and combine the literature data of Croxall et al. to derive a series of physical properties, including the gas-phase extinction, stellar population age, star formation rate (SFR) surface density, and oxygen abundance. The spatial distributions and radial profiles of these properties are investigated in order to study the characteristics of M51 and the clues to the formation and evolution of this galaxy. M51 presents a mild radial extinction gradient. The lower gas-phase extinction in the north spiral arms compared to the south arms are possibly caused by the past encounters with the companion galaxy of NGC 5195. A number of H II regions have the stellar age between 50 and 500 Myr, consistent with the recent interaction history by simulations in the literatures. The SFR surface density presents a mild radial gradient, which is ubiquitous in spiral galaxies. There is a negative metallicity gradient of $-0.08$ dex $R_{e}^{-1}$ in the disk region, which is also commonly found in many spiral galaxies. It is supported by the "inside-out" scenario of galaxy formation. We find a positive abundance gradient of 0.26 dex $R_{e}^{-1}$ in the inner region. There are possible reasons causing the positive gradient, including the freezing of the chemical enrichment due to the star-forming quenching in the bulge and the gas infall and dilution due to the pseudobulge growth and/or galactic interaction.

The Third Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a wide and deep imaging survey to cover a 5400 deg$^2$ area in the Northern Galactic Cap with the 2.3m Bok telescope using two filters ($g$ and $r$ bands). The Mosaic $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS) covers the same area in $z$ band with the 4m Mayall telescope. These two surveys will be used for spectroscopic targeting of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The BASS survey observations were completed in 2019 March. This paper describes the third data release (DR3) of BASS, which contains the photometric data from all BASS and MzLS observations between 2015 January and 2019 March. The median astrometric precision relative to {\it Gaia} positions is about 17 mas and the median photometric offset relative to the PanSTARRS1 photometry is within 5 mmag. The median $5σ$ AB magnitude depths for point sources are 24.2, 23.6, and 23.0 mag for $g$, $r$, and $z$ bands, respectively. The photometric depth within the survey area is highly homogeneous, with the difference between the 20\% and 80\% depth less than 0.3 mag. The DR3 data, including raw data, calibrated single-epoch images, single-epoch photometric catalogs, stacked images, and co-added photometric catalogs, are publicly accessible at \url{http://batc.bao.ac.cn/BASS/doku.php?id=datarelease:home}.

The Nature of the Double Nuclei in the Barred S0 Galaxy IC676

The lenticular galaxy IC 676 is a barred galaxy with double nuclei and active star formation in the central region. In this work we present the long-slit spectroscopy and archival multi-wavelength images to investigate the nature and origin of the double nuclei in IC 676. Through photometric 1D brightness profiles and 2D image decomposition, we show that this galaxy consists of a stellar bar with the length of $\sim$ 2.5 kpc and two Sérsic disks both of which with Sérsic index $\it n \sim$ 1.3. There is probably little or no bulge component assembled in IC 676. The luminosities of the double nuclei are primarily dominated by young stellar populations within the ages of 1-10 Myr. The northern nucleus has stronger star formation activity than the southern one. The surface densities of the star formation rate in the double nuclei are similar to those in starburst galaxies or the circumnuclear star forming regions in spiral galaxies. Each of the double nuclei in IC 676 likely consists of young massive star clusters, which can be resolved as bright knots in the HST high resolution image. Our results suggest that IC 676 likely has a complex formation and evolutionary history. The secular processes driven by the stellar bar and external accretion may dominate the formation and evolution of its double nuclei. This indicates that the secular evolution involving the internal and external drivers may have an important contribution for the evolution of lenticular galaxies.

Observations of A Fast-Expanding and UV-Bright Type Ia Supernova SN 2013gs

In this paper, we present extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013gs discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. The photometric observations in the optical show that the light curves of SN 2013gs is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{B}$ = $-$19.25 $\pm$ 0.15 mag and a post-maximum decline rate $Δ$m$_{15}$(B) = 1.00 $ \pm $ 0.05 mag. \emph{Gehrels Swift} UVOT observations indicate that SN 2013gs shows unusually strong UV emission (especially in the $uvw1$ band) at around the maximum light (M$_{uvw1}$ $\sim$ $-$18.9 mag). The SN is characterized by relatively weak Fe~{\sc ii} {\sc iii} absorptions at $\sim$ 5000Å in the early spectra and a larger expansion velocity ($v_{Si}$ $\sim$ 13,000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light) than the normal-velocity SNe Ia. We discuss the relation between the $uvw1-v$ color and some observables, including Si~{\sc ii} velocity, line strength of Si~{\sc ii} $λ$6355, Fe~{\sc ii}/{\sc iii} lines and $Δm_{15}$(B). Compared to other fast-expanding SNe Ia, SN 2013gs exhibits Si and Fe absorption lines with similar strength and bluer $uvw1-v$ color. We briefly discussed the origin of the observed UV dispersion of SNe Ia.

The First Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a new wide-field legacy imaging survey in the northern Galactic cap using the 2.3m Bok telescope. The survey will cover about 5400 deg$^2$ in the $g$ and $r$ bands, and the expected 5$σ$ depths (corrected for the Galactic extinction) in the two bands are 24.0 and 23.4 mag, respectively. BASS started observations in January 2015, and has completed about 41% of the whole area as of July 2016. The first data release contains both calibrated images and photometric catalogs obtained in 2015 and 2016. The depths of single-epoch images in the two bands are 23.4 and 22.9 mag, and the full depths of three epochs are about 24.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively.

The Second Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

This paper presents the second data release (DR2) of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS). BASS is an imaging survey of about 5400 deg$^2$ in $g$ and $r$ bands using the 2.3 m Bok telescope. DR2 includes the observations as of July 2017 obtained by BASS and Mayall $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS). This is our first time to include the MzLS data covering the same area as BASS. BASS and MzLS have respectively completed about 72% and 76% of their observations. The two surveys will be served for the spectroscopic targeting of the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. Both BASS and MzLS data are reduced by the same pipeline. We have updated the basic data reduction and photometric methods in DR2. In particular, source detections are performed on stacked images, and photometric measurements are co-added from single-epoch images based on these sources. The median 5$σ$ depths with corrections of the Galactic extinction are 24.05, 23.61, and 23.10 mag for $g$, $r$, and $z$ bands, respectively. The DR2 data products include stacked images, co-added catalogs, and single-epoch images and catalogs. The BASS website (http://batc.bao.ac.cn/BASS/) provides detailed information and links to download the data.

The relation between HI Gas and Star Formation Properties in Nearby Galaxies

In this paper, we present some correlations of neutral hydrogen HI gas and physical properties of galaxies to investigate the role of atomic gas in governing galaxy evolution. We build a HI-detected sample including 70 galaxies that are detected by ALFALFA in a 15 deg$^2$ region, and derive their star formation distribution based on the images of $\rm Hα$ narrow-band observed here. In general, HI-detected galaxies have low surface density of stellar mass and active star formation. Additionally, most of the galaxies are in good agreement with the star-forming main sequence, consistent with the previous findings. We confirm the dependence of star formation (SF) in galaxies on HI gas at least on global scale, i.e., star formation rate (SFR) generally increases with HI mass, specific star formation rate (SSFR$\equiv$SFR/M$_*$) increases with HI fraction ($f_{HI}$) even for a given stellar mass, and \hi-based star formation efficiency (SFE) mildly increases with the stellar mass and SFR surface density. Based on the distribution of stellar mass and star formation, we calculate the morphology indices of the sample, and analyze the dependence of $f_{HI}$ and SFE on them. The weak correlations between SFE and morphological indexes imply a weak physical link between HI and star formation in small scale. We find that $f_{HI}$ mildly increases with the asymmetry and decreases with the concentration of galaxies, suggesting that the HI gas supply and its effect are likely correlated with external processes in the extended disks of galaxies.

Photometric calibration for the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey and Mayall z-band Legacy Survey

We present the photometric calibration of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) and Mayall z-band Legacy Survey (MzLS), which are two of the three wide-field optical legacy imaging surveys to provide the baseline targeting data for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project. The method of our photometric calibration is subdivided into the external and internal processes. The former utilizes the point-source objects of Pan-STARRS1 survey (PS1) as the reference standards to achieve the zero points of the absolute flux for individual exposures. And then the latter revise the zero points to make them consistent across the survey based on multiple tilings and large offset overlaps. Our process achieves a homogeneous photometric calibration over most of the sky with precision better than 10 mmag for g and r bands, 15 mmag for z band. The accuracy of the calibration is better than 1% at the bright end (16-18 mag) over most of the survey area.

An H$α$ Imaging Survey of the Low-surface-brightness Galaxies Selected from the Fall Sky Region of the 40$\%$ ALFALFA \ion{H}{1} Survey

We present the observed H$α$ flux and derived star formation rates (SFRs) for a fall sample of low$-$surface$-$brightness galaxies (LSBGs). The sample is selected from the fall sky region of the 40$\%$ ALFALFA {\ion{H}{1}} survey $-$ SDSS DR7 photometric data, and all the $Hα$ images were obtained using the 2.16 m telescope, operated by the National Astronomy Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A total of 111 LSBGs were observed and $Hα$ flux was measured in 92 of them. Though almost all the LSBGs in our sample are {\ion{H}{1}}$-$rich, their SFRs derived from the extinction and filter$-$transmission$-$corrected $Hα$ flux, are less than 1$M_{\sun}$$yr^{-1}$. LSBGs and star forming galaxies have similar {\ion{H}{1}} surface densities, but LSBGs have much lower SFRs and SFR surface densities than star$-$forming galaxies. Our results show that LSBGs deviate from the Kennicutt-Schmidt law significantly, which indicate that they have low star formation efficiency. The SFRs of LSBGs are close to average SFRs in Hubble time and support the previous arguments that most of the LSBGs are stable systems and they tend to seldom contain strong interactions or major mergers during their star formation histories.

Mapping the Tidal Disruption of the Hercules Dwarf: A Wide-Field DECam Imaging Search for RR Lyrae Stars

We investigate the hypothesized tidal disruption of the Hercules ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD). Previous tidal disruption studies of the Hercules UFD have been hindered by the high degree of foreground contamination in the direction of the dwarf. We bypass this issue by using RR Lyrae stars, which are standard candles with a very low field-volume density at the distance of Hercules. We use wide-field imaging from the Dark Energy Camera on CTIO to identify candidate RR Lyrae stars, supplemented with observations taken in coordination with the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey on the Bok Telescope. Combining color, magnitude, and light-curve information, we identify three new RR Lyrae stars associated with Hercules. All three of these new RR Lyrae stars lie outside its published tidal radius. When considered with the nine RR Lyrae stars already known within the tidal radius, these results suggest that a substantial fraction of Hercules' stellar content has been stripped. With this degree of tidal disruption, Hercules is an interesting case between a visibly disrupted dwarf (such as the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy) and one in dynamic equilibrium. The degree of disruption also shows that we must be more careful with the ways we determine object membership when estimating dwarf masses in the future. One of the three discovered RR Lyrae stars sits along the minor axis of Hercules, but over two tidal radii away. This type of debris is consistent with recent models that suggest Hercules' orbit is aligned with its minor axis.

WiFi based trajectory alignment, calibration and easy site survey using smart phones and foot-mounted IMUs

Foot-mounted inertial positioning (FMIP) can face problems of inertial drifts and unknown initial states in real applications, which renders the estimated trajectories inaccurate and not obtained in a well defined coordinate system for matching trajectories of different users. In this paper, an approach adopting received signal strength (RSS) measurements for Wifi access points (APs) are proposed to align and calibrate the trajectories estimated from foot mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs). A crowd-sourced radio map (RM) can be built subsequently and can be used for fingerprinting based Wifi indoor positioning (FWIP). The foundation of the proposed approach is graph based simultaneously localization and mapping (SLAM). The nodes in the graph denote users poses and the edges denote the pairwise constrains between the nodes. The constrains are derived from: (1) inertial estimated trajectories; (2) vicinity in the RSS space. With these constrains, an error functions is defined. By minimizing the error function, the graph is optimized and the aligned/calibrated trajectories along with the RM are acquired. The experimental results have corroborated the effectiveness of the approach for trajectory alignment, calibration as well as RM construction.

Pedestrian Positioning Using WiFi Fingerprints and a Foot-mounted Inertial Sensor

Foot-mounted inertial positioning (FMIP) and fingerprinting based WiFi indoor positioning (FWIP) are two promising solutions for indoor positioning. However, FMIP suffers from accumulative positioning errors in the long term while FWIP involves a very labor-intensive offline training phase. A new approach combining the two solutions is proposed in this paper, which can limit the error growth in FMIP and is free of any offline site survey phase. This approach is realized in the framework of a particle filter, where each particle denotes a potential trajectory of the user and is weighted according to its consistency in signal strength space. Compared with the traditional Gaussian process based approaches, the proposed one has less computational cost and is free from any prior information in the position domain, such as the positions of access points, received signal strengths at certain positions and so on. An experiment is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach compared to the traditional Gaussian process based approach.
