Beyond What Meets the Eye: Unveiling Situational Illusions for Multimodal Large Language Models

Real-world situation appearances can deviate from their underlying physical states, challenging the reliability of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) in practical applications. In this paper, we term this phenomenon situational illusions and investigate: (1) how MLLMs perform under such illusions, and (2) how to mitigate the limitations. We first develop a comprehensive where-what-how taxonomy that characterizes where situational illusions occur, what targets they take, and how they arise. Building on this taxonomy, we introduce MSIBench, a benchmark designed to assess the discrimination, understanding, and reasoning capabilities of MLLMs under situational illusions. Evaluations of 27 model configurations reveal that current MLLMs are highly vulnerable to these illusions and exhibit 6 typical failure modes related to visual observation, grounding, and reasoning. To mitigate the limitations, we build on the core idea of systematically inspecting and reasoning over visual evidence for contextual understanding, developing prompting for closed-source models and supervised fine-tuning for open-source models, respectively. These two simple yet effective methods improve model performances by 20% at most, suggesting a practical path toward more reliable multimodal perception and reasoning in complex real-world environments.

MLoRA: Multi-Domain Low-Rank Adaptive Network for CTR Prediction

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction is one of the fundamental tasks in the industry, especially in e-commerce, social media, and streaming media. It directly impacts website revenues, user satisfaction, and user retention. However, real-world production platforms often encompass various domains to cater for diverse customer needs. Traditional CTR prediction models struggle in multi-domain recommendation scenarios, facing challenges of data sparsity and disparate data distributions across domains. Existing multi-domain recommendation approaches introduce specific-domain modules for each domain, which partially address these issues but often significantly increase model parameters and lead to insufficient training. In this paper, we propose a Multi-domain Low-Rank Adaptive network (MLoRA) for CTR prediction, where we introduce a specialized LoRA module for each domain. This approach enhances the model's performance in multi-domain CTR prediction tasks and is able to be applied to various deep-learning models. We evaluate the proposed method on several multi-domain datasets. Experimental results demonstrate our MLoRA approach achieves a significant improvement compared with state-of-the-art baselines. Furthermore, we deploy it in the production environment of the Alibaba.COM. The online A/B testing results indicate the superiority and flexibility in real-world production environments. The code of our MLoRA is publicly available.

Optimal excess-of-loss reinsurance and investment problem for an insurer with default risk under a stochastic volatility model

In this paper, we study an optimal excess-of-loss reinsurance and investment problem for an insurer in defaultable market. The insurer can buy reinsurance and invest in the following securities: a bank account, a risky asset with stochastic volatility and a defaultable corporate bond. We discuss the optimal investment strategy into two subproblems: a pre-default case and a post-default case. We show the existence of a classical solution to a pre-default case via super-sub solution techniques and give an explicit characterization of the optimal reinsurance and investment policies that maximize the expected CARA utility of the terminal wealth. We prove a verification theorem establishing the uniqueness of the solution. Numerical results are presented in the case of the Scott model and we discuss economic insights obtained from these results.
