Continual Human-in-the-Loop Optimization

Optimal input settings vary across users due to differences in motor abilities and personal preferences, which are typically addressed by manual tuning or calibration. Although human-in-the-loop optimization has the potential to identify optimal settings during use, it is rarely applied due to its long optimization process. A more efficient approach would continually leverage data from previous users to accelerate optimization, exploiting shared traits while adapting to individual characteristics. We introduce the concept of Continual Human-in-the-Loop Optimization and a Bayesian optimization-based method that leverages a Bayesian-neural-network surrogate model to capture population-level characteristics while adapting to new users. We propose a generative replay strategy to mitigate catastrophic forgetting. We demonstrate our method by optimizing virtual reality keyboard parameters for text entry using direct touch, showing reduced adaptation times with a growing user base. Our method opens the door for next-generation personalized input systems that improve with accumulated experience.

Modeling the Impact of Visual Stimuli on Redirection Noticeability with Gaze Behavior in Virtual Reality

While users could embody virtual avatars that mirror their physical movements in Virtual Reality, these avatars' motions can be redirected to enable novel interactions. Excessive redirection, however, could break the user's sense of embodiment due to perceptual conflicts between vision and proprioception. While prior work focused on avatar-related factors influencing the noticeability of redirection, we investigate how the visual stimuli in the surrounding virtual environment affect user behavior and, in turn, the noticeability of redirection. Given the wide variety of different types of visual stimuli and their tendency to elicit varying individual reactions, we propose to use users' gaze behavior as an indicator of their response to the stimuli and model the noticeability of redirection. We conducted two user studies to collect users' gaze behavior and noticeability, investigating the relationship between them and identifying the most effective gaze behavior features for predicting noticeability. Based on the data, we developed a regression model that takes users' gaze behavior as input and outputs the noticeability of redirection. We then conducted an evaluation study to test our model on unseen visual stimuli, achieving an accuracy of 0.012 MSE. We further implemented an adaptive redirection technique and conducted a proof-of-concept study to evaluate its effectiveness with complex visual stimuli in two applications. The results indicated that participants experienced less physical demanding and a stronger sense of body ownership when using our adaptive technique, demonstrating the potential of our model to support real-world use cases.

Control System Design and Experiments for Autonomous Underwater Helicopter Docking Procedure Based on Acoustic-inertial-optical Guidance

A control system structure for the underwater docking procedure of an Autonomous Underwater Helicopter (AUH) is proposed in this paper, which utilizes acoustic-inertial-optical guidance. Unlike conventional Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), the maneuverability requirements for AUHs are more stringent during the docking procedure, requiring it to remain stationary or have minimal horizontal movement while moving vertically. The docking procedure is divided into two stages: Homing and Landing, each stage utilizing different guidance methods. Additionally, a segmented aligning strategy operating at various altitudes and a linear velocity decision are both adopted in Landing stage. Due to the unique structure of the Subsea Docking System (SDS), the AUH is required to dock onto the SDS in a fixed orientation with specific attitude and altitude. Therefore, a particular criterion is proposed to determine whether the AUH has successfully docked onto the SDS. Furthermore, the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control method in AUH's docking procedure are demonstrated through pool experiments and sea trials.

Multi-Scale Temporal Transformer For Speech Emotion Recognition

Speech emotion recognition plays a crucial role in human-machine interaction systems. Recently various optimized Transformers have been successfully applied to speech emotion recognition. However, the existing Transformer architectures focus more on global information and require large computation. On the other hand, abundant speech emotional representations exist locally on different parts of the input speech. To tackle these problems, we propose a Multi-Scale TRansfomer (MSTR) for speech emotion recognition. It comprises of three main components: (1) a multi-scale temporal feature operator, (2) a fractal self-attention module, and (3) a scale mixer module. These three components can effectively enhance the transformer's ability to learn multi-scale local emotion representations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MSTR model significantly outperforms a vanilla Transformer and other state-of-the-art methods across three speech emotion datasets: IEMOCAP, MELD and, CREMAD. In addition, it can greatly reduce the computational cost.

SituationAdapt: Contextual UI Optimization in Mixed Reality with Situation Awareness via LLM Reasoning

Mixed Reality is increasingly used in mobile settings beyond controlled home and office spaces. This mobility introduces the need for user interface layouts that adapt to varying contexts. However, existing adaptive systems are designed only for static environments. In this paper, we introduce SituationAdapt, a system that adjusts Mixed Reality UIs to real-world surroundings by considering environmental and social cues in shared settings. Our system consists of perception, reasoning, and optimization modules for UI adaptation. Our perception module identifies objects and individuals around the user, while our reasoning module leverages a Vision-and-Language Model to assess the placement of interactive UI elements. This ensures that adapted layouts do not obstruct relevant environmental cues or interfere with social norms. Our optimization module then generates Mixed Reality interfaces that account for these considerations as well as temporal constraints. For evaluation, we first validate our reasoning module's capability of assessing UI contexts in comparison to human expert users. In an online user study, we then establish SituationAdapt's capability of producing context-aware layouts for Mixed Reality, where it outperformed previous adaptive layout methods. We conclude with a series of applications and scenarios to demonstrate SituationAdapt's versatility.

AS-Speech: Adaptive Style For Speech Synthesis

In recent years, there has been significant progress in Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis technology, enabling the high-quality synthesis of voices in common scenarios. In unseen situations, adaptive TTS requires a strong generalization capability to speaker style characteristics. However, the existing adaptive methods can only extract and integrate coarse-grained timbre or mixed rhythm attributes separately. In this paper, we propose AS-Speech, an adaptive style methodology that integrates the speaker timbre characteristics and rhythmic attributes into a unified framework for text-to-speech synthesis. Specifically, AS-Speech can accurately simulate style characteristics through fine-grained text-based timbre features and global rhythm information, and achieve high-fidelity speech synthesis through the diffusion model. Experiments show that the proposed model produces voices with higher naturalness and similarity in terms of timbre and rhythm compared to a series of adaptive TTS models.

LLM-for-X: Application-agnostic Integration of Large Language Models to Support Personal Writing Workflows

To enhance productivity and to streamline workflows, there is a growing trend to embed large language model (LLM) functionality into applications, from browser-based web apps to native apps that run on personal computers. Here, we introduce LLM-for-X, a system-wide shortcut layer that seamlessly augments any application with LLM services through a lightweight popup dialog. Our native layer seamlessly connects front-end applications to popular LLM backends, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, using their uniform chat front-ends as the programming interface or their custom API calls. We demonstrate the benefits of LLM-for-X across a wide variety of applications, including Microsoft Office, VSCode, and Adobe Acrobat as well as popular web apps such as Overleaf. In our evaluation, we compared LLM-for-X with ChatGPT's web interface in a series of tasks, showing that our approach can provide users with quick, efficient, and easy-to-use LLM assistance without context switching to support writing and reading tasks that is agnostic of the specific application.

Automated architectural space layout planning using a physics-inspired generative design framework

The determination of space layout is one of the primary activities in the schematic design stage of an architectural project. The initial layout planning defines the shape, dimension, and circulation pattern of internal spaces; which can also affect performance and cost of the construction. When carried out manually, space layout planning can be complicated, repetitive and time consuming. In this work, a generative design framework for the automatic generation of spatial architectural layout has been developed. The proposed approach integrates a novel physics-inspired parametric model for space layout planning and an evolutionary optimisation metaheuristic. Results revealed that such a generative design framework can generate a wide variety of design suggestions at the schematic design stage, applicable to complex design problems.

NSGAN: A Non-Dominant Sorting Optimisation-Based Generative Adversarial Design Framework for Alloy Discovery

The design and discovery of new materials is fundamental to advancing scientific and technological innovation. The recent emergence of the materials genome concept holds great promise in revolutionising materials science by enabling the systematic utilisation of data for efficient prediction and optimisation of superior materials. However, the materials genome approach can be stymied by the vast complexity of design spaces, which often demand substantial computational resources and sophisticated data processing capabilities. To address these challenges, this work introduces a novel generative design framework called the non-dominant sorting optimisation-based generative adversarial networks (NSGAN). Capitalising on the synergies of genetic algorithms (GA) and generative adversarial networks (GANs), NSGAN provides a robust and efficient approach for tackling high-dimensional multi-objective optimisation design problems. To validate the efficacy of the proposed framework, we applied the model to a comprehensive dataset of aluminium alloys. Additionally, an online tool was created as a supplementary resource, offering a brief introduction to this innovative method for the wider scientific community. This study explores the potential of a predictive and data-driven approach in material design, indicating a promising pathway for widespread applications in the field of materials science.

Quantum Advantage of One-Way Squeezing in Enhancing Weak-Force Sensing

Cavity optomechanical (COM) sensors, featuring efficient light-motion couplings, have been widely used for ultra sensitive measurements of various physical quantities ranging from displacements to accelerations or weak forces. Previous works, however, have mainly focused on reciprocal COM systems. Here, we propose how to further improve the performance of quantum COM sensors by breaking reciprocal symmetry in purely quantum regime. Specifically, we consider a spinning COM resonator and show that by selectively driving it in opposite directions, highly nonreciprocal optical squeezing can emerge, which in turn provides an efficient way to surpass the standard quantum limit that otherwise exists in conventional reciprocal devices. Our work confirms that breaking reciprocal symmetry, already achieved in diverse systems well beyond spinning systems, can serve as a new strategy to further enhance the abilities of advanced quantum sensors, for applications ranging from testing fundamental physical laws to practical quantum metrology.

Membership Information Leakage in Federated Contrastive Learning

Federated Contrastive Learning (FCL) represents a burgeoning approach for learning from decentralized unlabeled data while upholding data privacy. In FCL, participant clients collaborate in learning a global encoder using unlabeled data, which can serve as a versatile feature extractor for diverse downstream tasks. Nonetheless, FCL is susceptible to privacy risks, such as membership information leakage, stemming from its distributed nature, an aspect often overlooked in current solutions. This study delves into the feasibility of executing a membership inference attack on FCL and proposes a robust attack methodology. The attacker's objective is to determine if the data signifies training member data by accessing the model's inference output. Specifically, we concentrate on attackers situated within a client framework, lacking the capability to manipulate server-side aggregation methods or discern the training status of other clients. We introduce two membership inference attacks tailored for FCL: the \textit{passive membership inference attack} and the \textit{active membership inference attack}, contingent on the attacker's involvement in local model training. Experimental findings across diverse datasets validate the effectiveness of our attacks and underscore the inherent privacy risks associated with the federated contrastive learning paradigm.

Time2Stop: Adaptive and Explainable Human-AI Loop for Smartphone Overuse Intervention

Despite a rich history of investigating smartphone overuse intervention techniques, AI-based just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI) methods for overuse reduction are lacking. We develop Time2Stop, an intelligent, adaptive, and explainable JITAI system that leverages machine learning to identify optimal intervention timings, introduces interventions with transparent AI explanations, and collects user feedback to establish a human-AI loop and adapt the intervention model over time. We conducted an 8-week field experiment (N=71) to evaluate the effectiveness of both the adaptation and explanation aspects of Time2Stop. Our results indicate that our adaptive models significantly outperform the baseline methods on intervention accuracy (>32.8\% relatively) and receptivity (>8.0\%). In addition, incorporating explanations further enhances the effectiveness by 53.8\% and 11.4\% on accuracy and receptivity, respectively. Moreover, Time2Stop significantly reduces overuse, decreasing app visit frequency by 7.0$\sim$8.9\%. Our subjective data also echoed these quantitative measures. Participants preferred the adaptive interventions and rated the system highly on intervention time accuracy, effectiveness, and level of trust. We envision our work can inspire future research on JITAI systems with a human-AI loop to evolve with users.

Stacking faults enabled second harmonic generation in centrosymmetric van der Waals RhI3

Second harmonic generation (SHG) in van der Waals (vdWs) materials has garnered significant attention due to its potential for integrated nonlinear optical and optoelectronic applications. Stacking faults in vdWs materials, a typical kind of planar defect, can introduce a new degree of freedom to modulate the crystal symmetry and resultant SHG response, however, the physical origin and tunability of stacking-fault-governed SHG in vdWs materials remain unclear. Here, taking the intrinsically centrosymmetric vdWs RhI3 as an example, we theoretically reveal the origin of stacking-fault-governed SHG response, where the SHG response comes from the energetically favorable AC- Cstacking fault of which the electrical transitions along the high symmetry paths Gamma-M and Gamma-K in the Brillion zone play the dominant role at 810 nm. Such stacking-fault-governed SHG response is further confirmed via structural characterizations and SHG measurements. Furthermore, by applying hydrostatic pressure on RhI3, the correlation between structural evolution and SHG response is revealed with SHG enhancement up to 6.9 times, where the decreased electronic transition energies and huger momentum matrix elements due to the stronger interlayer interactions upon compression magnify the SHG susceptibility. This study develops a promising foundation based on strategically designed stacking faults for pioneering new avenues in nonlinear nano-optics.

Multi-perspective Feedback-attention Coupling Model for Continuous-time Dynamic Graphs

Recently, representation learning over graph networks has gained popularity, with various models showing promising results. Despite this, several challenges persist: 1) most methods are designed for static or discrete-time dynamic graphs; 2) existing continuous-time dynamic graph algorithms focus on a single evolving perspective; and 3) many continuous-time dynamic graph approaches necessitate numerous temporal neighbors to capture long-term dependencies. In response, this paper introduces the Multi-Perspective Feedback-Attention Coupling (MPFA) model. MPFA incorporates information from both evolving and raw perspectives, efficiently learning the interleaved dynamics of observed processes. The evolving perspective employs temporal self-attention to distinguish continuously evolving temporal neighbors for information aggregation. Through dynamic updates, this perspective can capture long-term dependencies using a small number of temporal neighbors. Meanwhile, the raw perspective utilizes a feedback attention module with growth characteristic coefficients to aggregate raw neighborhood information. Experimental results on a self-organizing dataset and seven public datasets validate the efficacy and competitiveness of our proposed model.

Revolutionising inverse design of magnesium alloys through generative adversarial networks

The utility of machine learning (ML) techniques in materials science has accelerated materials design and discovery. However, the accuracy of ML models - particularly deep neural networks - heavily relies on the quality and quantity of the training data. Data collection methods often have limitations arising from cost, difficulty, and resource-intensive human efforts. Thus, limited high-quality data, especially for novel materials, poses a significant challenge in developing reliable ML models. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) offer one solution to augment datasets through synthetic sample generation. The present work explores the application of GANs in magnesium (Mg) alloy design, by training two deep neural networks within the structure of a Wasserstein GAN to generate new (novel) alloys with desired mechanical properties. This data augmentation-based strategy contributes to model robustness, particularly in cases where traditional data collection is impractical. The approach presented may expedite Mg alloy development, through a GAN assisted inverse design approach.

A Computational Approach for Mapping Electrochemical Activity of Multi-Principal Element Alloys

Multi principal element alloys (MPEAs) comprise a unique class of metal alloys. MPEAs have been demonstrated to possess several exceptional properties, including, as most relevant to the present study, a high corrosion resistance. In the context of MPEA design, the vast number of potential alloying elements and the staggering number of elemental combinations favours a computational alloy design approach. In order to computationally assess the prospective corrosion performance of MPEA, an approach was developed in this study. A density functional theory (DFT) based Monte Carlo method was used for the development of MPEA structure, with the AlCrTiV alloy used as a model. High-throughput DFT calculations were performed to create training datasets for surface activity towards different adsorbate species: O2-, Cl- and H+. Machine learning (ML) with combined representation was then utilised to predict the adsorption and vacancy energies as descriptors for surface activity. The capability of the combined computational methods of MC, DFT and ML, as a virtual electrochemical performance simulator for MPEAs was established and may be useful in exploring other MPEAs.

Joint Channel Estimation and Turbo Equalization of Single-Carrier Systems over Time-Varying Channels

Block transmission systems have been proven successful over frequency-selective channels. For time-varying channel such as in high-speed mobile communication and underwater communication, existing equalizers assume that channels over different data frames are independent. However, the real-world channels over different data frames are correlated, thereby indicating potentials for performance improvement. In this paper, we propose a joint channel estimation and equalization/decoding algorithm for a single-carrier system that exploits temporal correlations of channel between transmitted data frames. Leveraging the concept of dynamic compressive sensing, our method can utilize the information of several data frames to achieve better performance. The information not only passes between the channel and symbol, but also the channels over different data frames. Numerical simulations using an extensively validated underwater acoustic model with a time-varying channel establish that the proposed algorithm outperforms the former bilinear generalized approximate message passing equalizer and classic minimum mean square error turbo equalizer in bit error rate and channel estimation normalized mean square error. The algorithm idea we present can also find applications in other bilinear multiple measurements vector compressive sensing problems.
