IR275K: A Benchmark for Infrared Multi-Frame Super-Resolution Toward Efficient Remote Sensing

Efficient processing is becoming increasingly important in infrared remote sensing, where satellite constellations produce large volumes of observations under constrained detector resolution, power, and downlink bandwidth. Multi-frame super-resolution (MFSR) offers a software-based route to spatial enhancement, but its evaluation in infrared sensing remains fragmented across private datasets and ad-hoc protocols. Existing benchmarks do not explicitly capture the thermal contrast, sensor noise, weak texture, and platform-induced frame-to-frame variation that characterize infrared video. We introduce IR275K, a curated benchmark containing 594 infrared video sequences and 275,196 frames. It provides sequence-level train/validation/test splits and a reproducible X4 evaluation protocol. As an initial architectural probe, we further evaluate CGMamba, a lightweight state-space model with 10.90M parameters and 112.14G FLOPs. CGMamba combines 2D rotary position encoding (2D~RoPE) with center-guided cross-Mamba (CGCM) fusion for implicit multi-frame reconstruction. It achieves 33.19dB PSNR, outperforming infrared single-image super-resolution references by 0.35--0.52~dB at substantially lower computational cost. Ablation results show that removing 2D~RoPE from CGCM causes a 1.53dB drop and severe grid-like artifacts. This indicates that explicit spatial anchoring is critical for stabilizing SSM-based cross-frame gating under infrared conditions. IR275K provides a reproducible foundation for accuracy--efficiency evaluation of infrared MFSR methods, while the architectural analysis offers a concrete starting point for spatially aware SSM design under resource-constrained infrared sensing. Ultrawide-angle diffraction-limited 2D beam steering via hybrid integrated metasurface-photonic circuit

Two-dimensional (2D) wide field-of-view (FOV) beam steering is a key enabling capability for emerging free-space optical systems, including inter-satellite optical links, airborne LiDAR, point-to-point optical wireless communications, and collaborative robotic platforms. These applications require rapid acquisition and tracking across both azimuth and elevation; architectures that offer wide scanning in only one dimension while maintaining limited coverage in the orthogonal direction constrain link availability, coverage uniformity, and system agility. Here, we demonstrate a chip-scale platform for ultrawide-angle, diffraction-limited 2D beam steering based on hybrid integration of a silicon photonic integrated circuit (PIC) and an optical metasurface. A free-form micro-optical reflector efficiently transforms the guided waveguide mode into an expanded free-space beam that illuminates an analytically optimized ultrawide-FOV metasurface. The integrated system achieves a measured FOV exceeding 160{\deg} while maintaining diffraction-limited beam quality over a broad angular range at telecom wavelengths. This hybrid PIC-metasurface architecture provides a compact and scalable route to high-quality 2D beam steering and establishes a practical pathway toward integrated optical projectors for space-based optical communications and other applications requiring agile, wide-angle, high-fidelity beam control.

Developing and characterizing a new-generation regolith simulant "IGCAS-AST01" for the Tianwen-2 target asteroid (469219) Kamo'oalewa

China plans to return samples from the near-Earth asteroid (469219) Kamo'oalewa, which we previously identified as an LL-chondrite-compositional, highly space-weathered object with fine-grained regolith. In this study, we developed 10 mL of Kamo'oalewa regolith simulant, designated "IGCAS-AST01", by irradiating LL5/6 chondrite (Kheneg Ljou^ad) powder with a high-energy pulsed laser. We then analyzed the composition, grain size distribution, density, porosity, visible to near-infrared reflectance spectrum, thermal emission spectrum, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, and microstructural features of both the fresh (unirradiated) powder and IGCAS-AST01. IGCAS-AST01 is composed of 57.8 vol.% olivine, 19.9 vol.% orthopyroxene, 5.6 vol.% diopside, 12.2 vol.% plagioclase, 2.6 vol.% troilite, and minor amounts of other phases. It has a mean size of 26.99 um, a median size of 23.19 um, a density of 700 kg m^-3, and a porosity of 79.1%. Additionally, IGCAS-AST01 exhibits a low reflectance of 0.1 at 0.55 um and an extremely steep spectral slope. In the temperature range of 253.15-473.15 K, its thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity range from 3.6-4.7 x 10^-6 m^2 s^-1 and 718.43-890.20 J kg^-1 K^-1, respectively. Furthermore, thick amorphous rims and abundant nanophase metallic iron particles are observed in olivine and pyroxene grains of IGCAS-AST01. These results could support the Tianwen-2 mission's payload calibration, sampling operations, on-orbit scientific data interpretation, and future sample analysis.

Tianwen-2 target asteroid (469219) Kamo'oalewa probably develops an Itokawa-compositional but ultra-highly space-weathered surface

China's Tianwen-2 mission plans to return samples from a small, rapidly spinning Earth quasi-satellite (469219) Kamo'oalewa. Previous studies linked Kamo'oalewa to lunar composition and origin. Here, we propose another scenario. We reanalyzed the reflectance spectrum of Kamo'oalewa and obtained an absorption band center at 1.001+-0.028 um (error is 1sigma), consistent with LL chondrites. We then conducted space weathering (SW) experiments on meteorites and found that highly space-weathered LL chondrite powder (but not slab) successfully reproduced the reflectance spectrum of Kamo'oalewa. We further traced the dynamical origin of Kamo'oalewa and found that it probably originated from the v6 secular resonance, and more specifically, the Flora family. Kamo'oalewa exhibits a similar composition to Itokawa and 7 objects in the Flora family, but with a higher degree of space weathering. We, therefore, proposed that Kamo'oalewa probably originated from the Flora family and developed an Itokawa-compositional, highly space-weathered, fine-regolith-dominated surface.

Coherent all-optical tuning of large-area phase-gradient metasurface

Tunable active metasurfaces have become a major research focus in recent years. Among tuning mechanisms, all-optical coherent control stands out because it requires no material or geometric change, enabling ultrafast, low-energy, interference-based modulation of amplitude, phase, and polarization in ultrathin devices. However, when applied to phase-gradient metasurfaces, coherent control has been limited to small apertures effectively confined to a single Fresnel zone, leading to large divergence and degraded beam quality. Here we propose and numerically validate a scalable method that enables large-area coherent control. The key idea is to use coherent illumination to tune the phase gradient within each Fresnel zone while a direct search algorithm optimizes zone-by-zone parameters to meet system-level targets. Using this principle, we demonstrate continuous tuning of a large-area metasurface for continuous beam-steering without per-meta-atom phase actuation. The same framework applies broadly to continuously tunable phase-gradient optics, including varifocal metalenses, parfocal zoom metalenses, tunable axicons, and related dynamic focusing elements.

Nonlinear magnetic sensing with hybrid nitrogen-vacancy/magnon systems

Magnetic sensing beyond linear regime could broaden the frequency range of detectable magnetic fields, which is crucial to various microwave and quantum applications. Recently, nonlinear interactions in diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, one of the most extensively studied quantum magnetic sensors, are proposed to realize magnetic sensing across arbitrary frequencies. In this work, we enhance these capabilities by exploiting the nonlinear spin dynamics in hybrid systems of NV centers and ferri- or ferro-magnetic (FM) thin films. We study the frequency mixing effect in the hybrid NV/magnon systems, and demonstrate that the introduction of FM not only amplifies the intensity of nonlinear resonance signals that are intrinsic to NV spins, but also enables novel frequency mixings through parametric pumping and nonlinear magnon scattering effects. The discovery and understanding of the magnetic nonlinearities in hybrid NV/magnon systems position them as a prime candidate for magnetic sensing with a broad frequency range and high tunablity, particularly meaningful for nanoscale, dynamical, and non-invasive materials characterization.

Nonlinear Wave-Spin Interactions in Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers

Nonlinear phenomena represent one of the central topics in the study of wave-matter interactions and constitute the key blocks for various applications in optical communication, computing, sensing, and imaging. In this work, we show that by employing the interactions between microwave photons and electron spins of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, one can realize a variety of nonlinear effects, ranging from the resonance at the sum or difference frequency of two or more waves to electromagnetically induced transparency from the interference between spin transitions. We further verify the phase coherence through two-photon Rabi-oscillation measurements. The highly sensitive, optically detected NV-center dynamics not only provides a platform for studying magnetically induced nonlinearities but also promises novel functionalities in quantum control and quantum sensing.

Emergence of electric-field-tunable interfacial ferromagnetism in 2D antiferromagnet heterostructures

Van der Waals (vdW) magnet heterostructures have emerged as new platforms to explore exotic magnetic orders and quantum phenomena. Here, we study heterostructures of layered antiferromagnets, CrI3 and CrCl3, with perpendicular and in-plane magnetic anisotropy, respectively. Using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, we demonstrate out-of-plane magnetic order in the CrCl3 layer proximal to CrI3, with ferromagnetic interfacial coupling between the two. Such an interlayer exchange field leads to higher critical temperature than that of either CrI3 or CrCl3 alone. We further demonstrate significant electric-field control of the coercivity, attributed to the naturally broken structural inversion symmetry of the heterostructure allowing unprecedented direct coupling between electric field and interfacial magnetism. These findings illustrate the opportunity to explore exotic magnetic phases and engineer spintronic devices in vdW heterostructures.
