Comment on "Magnetotransport signatures of a single nodal electron pocket constructed from Fermi arcs"

We comment on the recent work [N. Harrison, \textit{et al.} Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 224505 (2015)] which attempts to explain the sign reversal and quantum oscillations of the Hall coefficient observed in cuprates from a single nodal diamond-shaped electron pocket with concave arc segments. Given the importance of this work, it calls for a closer scrutiny. Their conclusion of sign reversal of the Hall coefficient depends on a non-generic rounding of the sharp vertices. Moreover, their demonstration of quantum oscillation in the Hall coefficient from a single pocket is unconvincing. We maintain that at least two pockets with different scattering rates is necessary to explain the observed quantum oscillations of the Hall coefficient.

High anisotropy of fully hydrogenated borophene

We have studied the mechanical properties and phonon dispersions of fully hydrogenated borophene (borophane) under strains by first principles calculations. Uniaxial tensile strains along the a- and b-direction, respectively, and biaxial tensile strain have been considered. Our results show that the mechanical properties and phonon stability of borophane are both highly anisotropic. The ultimate tensile strain along the a-direction is only 0.12, but it can be as large as 0.30 along the b-direction. Compared to borophene and other 2D materials (graphene, graphane, silicene, silicane, h-BN, phosphorene and MoS2), borophane presents the most remarkable anisotropy in in-plane ultimate strain, which is very important for strain engineering. Furthermore, the phonon dispersions under the three applied strains indicate that borophane can withstand up to 5% and 15% uniaxial tensile strain along the a- and b-direction, respectively, and 9% biaxial tensile strain, indicating that mechanical failure in borophane is likely to originate from phonon instability.

Pairing of particle-hole symmetric composite fermions in half-filled Landau level

In a recent proposal of the half-filled Landau level, the composite fermions are taken to be Dirac particles and particle-hole symmetric. Cooper pairing of these composite fermions in different angular momentum channels, $\ell$, can give rise to different kinds of Pfaffian states. In addition to the well known Moore-Read Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, a new putative particle-hole symmetric Pfaffian state, corresponding to the $s-$wave pairing channel, was also proposed. However, the possible underlying pairing mechanism is not clear at all. In this work we provide a specific pairing mechanism for realizing some of these Pfaffian states. We show that there can be nonzero pairing in angular momentum channels $|\ell|\ge 1$ depending on the magnitude of a coupling constant. There is a quantum phase transition from the Dirac composite fermi liquid state to Cooper pairing states in angular momentum channels $|\ell|\ge 1$ as the coupling constant is tuned across its critical point value. Surprisingly the particle-hole symmetric $\ell=0$ channel pairing turns out to be impossible irrespective of the size of the coupling constant.

All-fiber generation of 29-fs pulses at 1.3-μm via Cherenkov radiation

We have experimentally demonstrated the all-fiber generation of 1.3-μm femtosecond pulses via Cherenkov radiation (CR) from an ultrafast Er-doped fiber laser. The experiment shows that the pulses maintain below 40 fs in the range from 1270 to 1315 nm with multi-milliwatt average output power. The shortest generated pulses can be as short as 29 fs. This ultrashort pulse source in 1.3-μm window can bring the benefits to many fields such as the bio-imaging and the ultrafast spectroscopy, and so on.

Onsager rule, quantum oscillation frequencies, and the density of states in the mixed-vortex state of cuprates

The Onsager rule determines the frequencies of quantum oscillations in magnetic fields. We show that this rule remains intact to an excellent approximation in the mixed-vortex state of the underdoped cuprates even though the Landau level index $n$ may be fairly low, $n\sim 10$. The models we consider are fairly general, consisting of a variety of density wave states combined with $d$-wave superconductivity within a mean field theory. Vortices are introduced as quenched disorder and averaged over many realizations, which can be considered as snapshots of a vortex liquid state. We also show that the oscillations ride on top of a field independent density of states, $ρ(B)$, for higher fields. This feature appears to be consistent with recent specific heat measurements [C. Marcenat, et al. Nature Comm. {\bf 6}, 7927 (2015)]. At lower fields we model the system as an ordered vortex lattice, and show that its density of states follows a dependence $ρ(B)\propto \sqrt{B}$ in agreement with the semiclassical results [G. E. Volovik, JETP Lett. {\bf 58}, 469 (1993)].

Asymptotic stability of wave equations coupled by velocities

This paper is devoted to study the asymptotic stability of wave equations with constant coefficients coupled by velocities. By using Riesz basis approach, multiplier method and frequency domain approach respectively, we find the sufficient and necessary condition, that the coefficients satisfy, leading to the exponential stability of the system. In addition, we give the optimal decay rate in one dimensional case.

Well-posedness and exact controllability of the mass balance equations for an extrusion process

In this paper, we study the well-posedness and exact controllability of a physical model for a food extrusion process in the isothermal case. The model expresses the mass balance in the extruder chamber and consists of a hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) and a nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) whose dynamics describes the evolution of a moving interface. By suitable change of coordinates and fixed point arguments, we prove the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution, and finally the exact controllability of the coupled system.

A one-step optimal energy decay formula for indirectly nonlinearly damped hyperbolic systems coupled by velocities

In this paper, we consider the energy decay of a damped hyperbolic system of wave-wave type which is coupled through the velocities. We are interested in the asymptotic properties of the solutions of this system in the case of indirect nonlinear damping, i.e. when only one equation is directly damped by a nonlinear damping. We prove that the total energy of the whole system decays as fast as the damped single equation. Moreover, we give a one-step general explicit decay formula for arbitrary nonlinearity. Our results shows that the damping properties are fully transferred from the damped equation to the undamped one by the coupling in velocities, different from the case of couplings through displacements as shown in \cite{AB01, ACK01, AB02, AL12} for the linear damping case, and in \cite{AB07} for the nonlinear damping case. The proofs of our results are based on multiplier techniques, weighted nonlinear integral inequalities and the optimal-weight convexity method of \cite{AB05, AB10}.

New Periodic Solutions for Newtonian $n$-Body Problems with Dihedral Group Symmetry and Topological Constraints

In this paper, we prove the existence of a family of new non-collision periodic solutions for the classical Newtonian $n$-body problems. In our assumption, the $n=2l\geq4$ particles are invariant under the dihedral rotation group $D_l$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ such that, at each instant, the $n$ particles form two twisted $l$-regular polygons. Our approach is variational minimizing method and we show that the minimizers are collision-free by level estimates and local deformations.

Feedback stabilization for the mass balance equations of a food extrusion process

In this paper, we study the stabilization problem for a food extrusion process in the isothermal case. The model expresses the mass conservation in the extruder chamber and consists of a hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) and a nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) whose dynamics describes the evolution of a moving interface. By using a Lyapunov approach, we obtain the exponential stabilization for the closed-loop system under natural feedback controls through indirect measurements.

Pairing in half-filled Landau level

Pairing of composite fermions in half-filled Landau level state is reexamined by solving the BCS gap equation with full frequency dependent current-current interactions. Our results show that there can be a \emph{continuous} transition from the Halperin-Lee-Read state to a chiral odd angular momentum Cooper pair state for short-range contact interaction. This is at odds with the previously established conclusion of first order pairing transition, in which the low frequency effective interaction was assumed for the entire frequency range. We find that even if the low frequency effective interaction is repulsive, it is compensated by the high frequency regime, which is attractive. We construct the phase diagrams and show that $\ell=1$ angular momentum channel is quite different from higher angular momenta $\ell\ge 3$. Remarkably, the full frequency dependent analysis applied to the bilayer Hall system with a total filling fraction $ν=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$ is quantitatively changed from the previously established results but not qualitatively.

Output feedback stabilization for a scalar conservation law with a nonlocal velocity

In this paper, we study the output feedback stabilization for a scalar conservation law with a nonlocal velocity, that models a highly re-entrant manufacturing system as encountered in semi-conductor production. By spectral analysis, we obtain a complete result on the exponential stabilization for the linearized control system. Moreover, by using a Lyapunov function approach, we also prove the exponential stabilization results for the nonlinear control system in certain cases.

Spin dynamics of possible density wave states in the pseudogap phase of the high temperature superconductors

In a recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment in the pseudogap state of the high temperature superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}}$ an unusual `vertical' dispersion of the spin excitations with a large in-plane anisotropy was observed. In this paper we discuss in detail the spin susceptibility of the singlet $d$-density wave, the triplet $d$-density wave, as well as the more common spin density wave orders with hopping anisotropies. From numerical calculations within the framework of random phase approximation, we find nearly vertical dispersion relations for spin excitations with anisotropic incommensurability at low energy $ω\le 90 meV$, which are reminiscent of the experiments. At very high energy $ω\ge 165 meV$, we also find energy-dependent incommensurability. Although there are some important difference between the three cases, unpolarized neutron measurements cannot discriminate between these alternate possibilities; the vertical dispersion, however, is a distinct feature of all three density wave states in contrast to the superconducting state, which shows an hour-glass shape dispersion.

Quantum oscillations in $\mathrm{YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ}}$ from an incommensurate $d$-density wave order

We consider quantum oscillation experiments in $\mathrm{YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ}}$ from the perspective of an incommensurate Fermi surface reconstruction using an exact transfer matrix method and the Pichard-Landauer formula for the conductivity. The specific density wave order considered is a period-8 $d$-density wave in which the current density is unidirectionally modulated. The current modulation is also naturally accompanied by a period-4 site charge modulation in the same direction, which is consistent with recent magnetic resonance measurements. In principle Landau theory also allows for a period-4 bond charge modulation, which is not discussed, but should be simple to incorporate in the future. This scenario leads to a natural, but not a unique, explanation of why only oscillations from a single electron pocket is observed, and a hole pocket of roughly twice the frequency as dictated by two-fold commensurate order, and the corresponding Luttinger sum rule, is not observed. However, it is possible that even higher magnetic fields will reveal a hole pocket of half the frequency of the electron pocket or smaller. This may be at the borderline of achievable high field measurements because at least a few complete oscillations have to be clearly resolved.

Analysis and control of a scalar conservation law modeling a highly re-entrant manufacturing system

In this paper, we study a scalar conservation law that models a highly re-entrant manufacturing system as encountered in semi-conductor production. As a generalization of \cite{CKWang}, the velocity function possesses both the local and nonlocal character. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution to the Cauchy problem with initial and boundary data in $L^{\infty}$. We also obtain the stability (continuous dependence) of both the solution and the out-flux with respect to the initial and boundary data. Finally, we prove the existence of an optimal control that minimizes, in the $L^p$-sense with $p\in [1,\infty)$, the difference between the actual out-flux and a forecast demand over a fixed time period.

Exact boundary controllability and observability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kind of nonlocal boundary conditions

In this paper we establish the theory on semiglobal classical solution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kind of nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, the corresponding exact boundary controllability and observability are obtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearized Saint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, we show that the number of both boundary controls and boundary observations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude that the exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in a network with loop can not be realized generically.

Exact boundary observability for nonautonomous quasilinear wave equations

By means of a direct and constructive method based on the theory of semiglobal $C^2$ solution, the local exact boundary observability is shown for nonautonomous 1-D quasilinear wave equations. The essential difference between nonautonomous wave equations and autonomous ones is also revealed.
