Thinking Hard About Physics Before Calculating: An Example from Pendulum Physics

This paper aims to show how to guide students with a familiar example to extract as much physics as possible before jumping into mathematical calculation. The period for a physical pendulum made up of a uniform rod is changed by attaching a piece of putty on it. The period for the combined system depends on the location of the putty. Simple reasoning without calculation shows that there are two locations for the putty that do not change the period of the physical pendulum: the axis and the center of percussion. Moreover, without calculation, we reason that there is at least one minimal period when the putty lies somewhere between these two locations.

Novel Approaches to Solve Simple Harmonic Motion

This paper presents two novel approaches to solve the classic simple harmonic motion. In one approach, the distance between the equilibrium position and the maximal displacement is divided into N equal segments. In each segment, the mass moves with constant acceleration under the average of two forces at the ends of the segment. Summing up the time covering each segment and taking the large-N limit reproduce one quarter of the period for simple harmonic motion. In the other approach, the time moving from the maximal displacement to the equilibrium position is divided into N equal intervals. A recurrence relation for the displacement is obtained. The large-N limit of its solution results in the same solution as that obtained from solving differential equation.

A Close Examination on Inelastic Collision

This paper examines the details of an inelastic collision when a bullet shoots a block vertically upward from below. With the assumption of constant interaction force between them, we obtain quantities of interest including the displacement for the block at the end of collision, the collision time, and in particular, the bullet's depth inside the block, which are not studied under the traditional assumption of very short collision time. We identify the condition under which the collision time can indeed be considered as negligibly short. The theory is applied to a well-known demonstration. Using the data extracted from photos of the demonstration, we calculate the magnitude of interaction force and the collision time, which can in no way be easily measured otherwise.

A Qualitative Analysis to Simple Harmonic Motion

This paper proposes a qualitative analysis to the simple harmonic motion for students who are not mathematically well-prepared. It uses the variation in speed and acceleration to sketch the velocity-time curve. The curve appears to be sinusoidal, whose shape is largely determined by the fact that the gradient of a velocity-time graph is acceleration. This approach cannot determine the exact value of period and claim the curve to be sinusoidal, however, it complements rigorous mathematical analysis in that it is full of physical reasoning that the mathematical approaches lack of.
