Silicon Oxide Electron-Emitting Nanodiodes

Electrically driven on-chip electron sources that do not need to be heated have been long pursued because the current thermionic electron sources show the problems of high power consumption, slow temporal response, bulky size, etc., but their realization remains challenging. Here we show that a nanogap formed by two electrodes on a silicon oxide substrate functions as an electron-emitting nanodiode after the silicon oxide in the nanogap is electrically switched to a high-resistance conducting state. A nanodiode based on graphene electrodes can be turned on by a voltage of ~7 V in ~100 ns and show an emission current of up to several microamperes, corresponding to an emission density of ~10^6 A cm^-2 and emission efficiency as high as 16.6%. We attribute the electron emission to be generated from a metal-insulator-metal tunneling diode on the substrate surface formed by the rupture of conducting filaments in silicon oxide. An array of 100 nanodiodes exhibits a global emission density of 5 A cm^-2 and stable emission with negligible current degradation over tens of hours under modest vacuum. The combined advantages of a low operating voltage, fast temporal response, high emission density and efficiency, convenient fabrication and integration, and stable emission in modest vacuum make silicon oxide electron-emitting nanodiodes a promising on-chip alternative to thermionic emission sources.

Mössbauer spectroscopy study of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting RbGd$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$

$^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectra were measured at different temperatures between 5.9 K and 300 K on the recently discovered self-doped superconducting RbGd$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ with T$_c$ as high as 35 K. Singlet pattern was observed down to the lowest temperature measured in this work, indicating the absence of static magnetic order on the Fe site. The intermediate isomer shift in comparison with that of the samples RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and GdFeAsO confirms the self doping induced local electronic structure change. Surprisingly, we observe two magnetic fluctuation induced spectral broadenings below $\sim$15 K and $\sim$100 K which are believed to be originated from the transferred magnetic fluctuations of the Gd$^{3+}$ moments and that of the magnetic fluctuations of the Fe atoms, respectively.

Effective reduction of the coercivity for Co$_{72}$Pt$_{28}$ thin film by exchange coupled Co$_{81}$Ir$_{19}$ soft layer with negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy

We report on the investigation of coercivity changes of the Co$_{72}$Pt$_{28}$/Co$_{81}$Ir$_{19}$ exchange-coupled composite (ECC) media with negative soft-layer (SL) magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MA) . Our results show that the hard-layer (HL) of our sample exhibits a columnar type microstructure with well isolated grains and the SL with hcp-structure grows on top of the HL with the same texture. Therefore, strong coupling of the two layers have been realized as evidenced by the magnetic characterization. Importantly, we observe a more effective reduction of the coercivity of the ECC media by using SLs with negative MA when compared to the use of SLs with positive or negligible MA. The experimental results are corroborated by theoretical calculations.

Micrometer thick soft magnetic films with magnetic moments restricted strictly in plane by negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy

Stripe domains or any other type domain structures with part of their magnetic moments deviating from the film plane, which usually occur above a certain film thickness, are known problems that limit their potential applications for soft magnetic thin films (SMTFs). In this work, we report the growth of micrometer thick c-axis oriented hcp-Co84Ir16 SMTFs with their magnetic moments restricted strictly in plane by negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Extensive characterizations have been performed on these films, which show that they exhibit very good soft magnetic properties even for our micrometer thick films. Moreover, the anisotropy properties and high-frequency properties were thoroughly investigated and our results show very promising properties of these SMTFs for future applications.

Correction of "Cloud Removal By Fusing Multi-Source and Multi-Temporal Images"

Remote sensing images often suffer from cloud cover. Cloud removal is required in many applications of remote sensing images. Multitemporal-based methods are popular and effective to cope with thick clouds. This paper contributes to a summarization and experimental comparation of the existing multitemporal-based methods. Furthermore, we propose a spatiotemporal-fusion with poisson-adjustment method to fuse multi-sensor and multi-temporal images for cloud removal. The experimental results show that the proposed method has potential to address the problem of accuracy reduction of cloud removal in multi-temporal images with significant changes.

Multi-feature combined cloud and cloud shadow detection in GaoFen-1 wide field of view imagery

The wide field of view (WFV) imaging system onboard the Chinese GaoFen-1 (GF-1) optical satellite has a 16-m resolution and four-day revisit cycle for large-scale Earth observation. The advantages of the high temporal-spatial resolution and the wide field of view make the GF-1 WFV imagery very popular. However, cloud cover is an inevitable problem in GF-1 WFV imagery, which influences its precise application. Accurate cloud and cloud shadow detection in GF-1 WFV imagery is quite difficult due to the fact that there are only three visible bands and one near-infrared band. In this paper, an automatic multi-feature combined (MFC) method is proposed for cloud and cloud shadow detection in GF-1 WFV imagery. The MFC algorithm first implements threshold segmentation based on the spectral features and mask refinement based on guided filtering to generate a preliminary cloud mask. The geometric features are then used in combination with the texture features to improve the cloud detection results and produce the final cloud mask. Finally, the cloud shadow mask can be acquired by means of the cloud and shadow matching and follow-up correction process. The method was validated using 108 globally distributed scenes. The results indicate that MFC performs well under most conditions, and the average overall accuracy of MFC cloud detection is as high as 96.8%. In the contrastive analysis with the official provided cloud fractions, MFC shows a significant improvement in cloud fraction estimation, and achieves a high accuracy for the cloud and cloud shadow detection in the GF-1 WFV imagery with fewer spectral bands. The proposed method could be used as a preprocessing step in the future to monitor land-cover change, and it could also be easily extended to other optical satellite imagery which has a similar spectral setting.

Generic Extensional Framework for the Memristive Systems

Considering the over-requirement of continuity and "well-defined" confined by the canonical framework model for memristive systems, this short paper proposes a more generic extensional framework to accommodate those discontinuity or not "well-defined" situation. In particular, two special subclasses are pointed out to fit the hitherto memristor device models.

Spin excitations in K$_{0.84}$Fe$_{1.99}$Se$_2$ superconductor as studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy

Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to probe the site specific information of the $K_{0.84}Fe_{1.99}Se_2$ superconductor. Possibility of coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism is discussed. A spin excitation gap, $ΔE \approx$5\,meV, is observed by analyzing the temperature dependence of the hyperfine magnetic field (HMF) at the iron site within the spin wave theory. Using a simple model suggested in the literature, the temperature dependence of the HMF is well reproduced, suggesting that, below room temperature, the iron-selenide superconductors can be regarded as ferromagnetically coupled spin blocks that interact with each other antiferromagnetically to form the observed checkerboard-like magnetic structure.

A Mössbauer study of the magneto-structural coupling effect in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFeAsF

In the present paper, we report a comparison study of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFeAsF using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of the magnetic hyperfine field is fitted with a modified Bean-Rodbell model. The results give much smaller magnetic moment and magneto-structural coupling effect for SrFeAsF, which may be understood as due to different inter-layer properties of the two compounds.

Charge redistribution at the antiferromagnetic phase transition in SrFeAsF compound

The relationship between spin, electron, and crystal structure has been one of the foremost issues in understanding the superconducting mechanism since the discovery of iron-based high temperature superconductors. Here, we report Mössbauer and first-principles calculations studies of the parent compound SrFeAsF with the largest temperature gap ($\sim$50\,K) between the structural and antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions. Our results reveal that the structural transition has little effect on the electronic structure of the compound SrFeAsF while the development of the AFM order induces a redistribution of the charges near the Fermi level.

Microstructure and magnetic anisotropy of electrospun Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ nanofibers: A local probe study

Understanding the phenomena at the nanometer scale is of fundamental importance for future improvements of desired properties of nanomaterials. We report a detailed investigation of the microstructure and the resulting magnetic anisotropy by magnetic, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Mössbauer measurements of the electrospun Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ nanofibers. Our results show that the electrospun Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ nanofibers exhibit nearly isotropic magnetic anisotropy. TEM measurements indicate that the nanofibers are composed of loosely connected and randomly aligned nanograins. As revealed by the Henkel plot, these nanofibers and the nanograins within the nanofibers are dipolar coupled, which reduces the effective shape anisotropy leading to a nearly random configuration of the magnetic moments inside the nanofibers, hence, the observed nearly isotropic magnetic anisotropy can be easily understood.

Mössbauer study of the field induced uniaxial anisotropy in electro-deposited FeCo alloy films

Thin ferromagnetic films with in-plane magnetic anisotropy are promising materials for obtaining high microwave permeability. The paper reports on the Mössbauer study of the field induced in-plane uniaxial anisotropy in electro-deposited $FeCo$ alloy films. The $FeCo$ alloy films have been prepared by electro-deposition method with and without external magnetic field applied parallel to the film plane during deposition. The vibrating sample magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements at room temperature indicate that the film deposited in external field shows an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy with an easy direction coincides with the external field direction and a hard direction perpendicular to the field direction, whereas the film deposited without external field doesn't show any in-plane anisotropy. Mössbauer spectra taken in three geometric arrangements show that the magnetic moments are almost constrained in the film plane for the film deposited with applied magnetic field. And the magnetic moments are tend to align in the direction of the applied external magnetic field during deposition, indicating that the observed anisotropy should be attributed to directional ordering of atomic pairs.

Magneto-structural coupling and harmonic lattice dynamics in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ probed by Mössbauer spectroscopy

In this paper we present detailed Mössbauer spectroscopy study of structural and magnetic properties of the undoped parent compound CaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal. By fitting the temperature dependence of the hyperfine magnetic field we show that the magneto-structural phase transition is clearly first-order in nature and we also deduced the compressibility of our sample to be $1.67\times10^{-2}\,GPa^{-1}$. Within the Landau's theory of phase transition, we further argue that the observed phase transition may stem from the strong magneto-structural coupling effect. Temperature dependence of the Lamb-Mössbauer factor show that the paramagnetic phase and the antiferromagnetic phase exhibit similar lattice dynamics in high frequency modes with very close Debye temperatures, $Θ_D \sim$270\,K.
