Agent Lightning v1.0: Towards Harnessed Agentic RL

Modern agents operate inside agent harnesses that manage tools, context, and control flow, making the harness a critical part of the agent system. Our original Agent Lightning introduced a disaggregated architecture that connects arbitrary agents to RL training through an LLM endpoint proxy, an approach later adopted by frameworks such as verl Uni-Agent, AReaL 2.0, slime, and Polar. We refer to this paradigm as harnessed agentic RL, where the deploy-time harness directly participates in model post-training. Harnessed agentic RL differs fundamentally from traditional agentic RL: the harness, rather than the training engine, owns the environment interaction loop, while the trainer observes only sequences of LLM request-response pairs. This introduces challenges in retokenization, sample merging, advantage calculation, loss normalization, and backend scheduling, which can substantially affect training stability and effectiveness. We present Agent Lightning v1.0, a lightweight framework for harnessed agentic RL implemented in approximately 3,500 lines of code. It supports arbitrary agent harnesses and serves as a practical testbed for studying these challenges. We evaluate it on instruction-following, search, and coding agents, and provide a complete reproducible pipeline for coding-agent RL. Using only 6K training examples and modest compute, RL improves Qwen3.5-9B on SWE-bench Verified from 41.8% to 56.4%, a 14.6-point absolute gain. We release the complete workflow and training scripts to facilitate reproducible research on harnessed agentic RL.

Excitonic pattern formation from a wrinkling instability in a van der Waals heterostructure

We studied photoluminescence of spatially indirect excitons (IXs) in a MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ van der Waals heterostructure. We observed a quasi-periodic triangular pattern of IXs with a characteristic spatial wavelength $\sim{}2.6\,μ\mathrm{m}$. Our theoretical analysis using a Föppl-von Kármán theory finds an elastic instability that produces triangular patterns with micrometer-scale wavelengths. This mechanism is consistent with the wavelength, symmetry, excitation power dependence, and temperature dependence of the observed IX pattern.

OpenISAC: An Open-Source Real-Time Experimentation Platform for OFDM-ISAC

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned to be one of the key usage scenarios for the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks. While significant progresses have been achieved for the theoretical studies, the further advancement of ISAC is hampered by the lack of accessible, open-source, and real-time experimental platforms. To address this gap, we introduce OpenISAC, a versatile and high-performance open-source platform for real-time ISAC experimentation. OpenISAC utilizes orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform and implements crucial sensing functionalities, including both monostatic and bistatic delay-Doppler sensing. A key feature of our platform is a novel over-the-air (OTA) synchronization mechanism that enables robust bistatic operations without requiring a wired connection between nodes. The platform is built entirely on open-source software, leveraging the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) hardware driver (UHD) library, thus eliminating the need for any commercial licenses. It supports a wide range of software-defined radios, from the cost-effective USRP B200 series to the high-performance X400 series. The physical layer modulator and demodulator are implemented with C++ for high-speed processing, while the sensing data is streamed to a Python environment, providing a user-friendly interface for rapid prototyping and validation of sensing signal processing algorithms. With flexible parameter selection and real-time communication and sensing operation, OpenISAC serves as a powerful and accessible tool for the academic and research communities to explore and innovate within the field of OFDM-ISAC.

Efficient transport kinetics of indirect excitons in van der Waals heterostructure

Exciton transport is fundamental for understanding transport phenomena in bosonic systems and for exploring excitation energy transfer in materials. Spatially indirect excitons (IXs) have long lifetimes allowing them to form quantum bosonic states and travel long distances. Van der Waals heterostructures form a new materials platform for exploring IX transport. Disordered in-plane potentials suppress IX transport due to IX localization and scattering. In this work, we found the efficient IX transport kinetics characterized by anomalously high IX mobility. The efficient IX transport kinetics is observed in the presence of in-plane disorder and is consistent with predicted IX superfluidity.

3D Spherical Directly-Connected Antenna Array for Low-Altitude UAV Swarm ISAC

Recently a novel multi-antenna architecture termed ray antenna array (RAA) was proposed, where several simple uniform linear arrays (sULAs) are arranged in a ray-like structure to enhance communication and sensing performance. By eliminating the need for phase shifters, it also significantly reduces hardware costs. However, RAA is prone to signal blockage and has no elevation angle resolution capability in three-dimensional (3D) scenarios. To address such issues, in this paper we propose a novel spherical directly-connected antenna array (DCAA), which composes of multiple simple uniform planar arrays (sUPAs) placed over a spherical surface. All elements within each sUPA are directly connected. Compared to conventional arrays with hybrid analog/digital beamforming (HBF), DCAA significantly reduces hardware cost, improves energy focusing, and provides superior and uniform angular res olution for 3D space. These advantages make DCAA particularly suitable for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) swarm scenarios, where targets may frequently move away from the boresight of traditional arrays, degrading both communication and sensing performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed spherical DCAA achieves significantly better angular resolution and higher spectral efficiency than conventional array with HBF, highlighting its strong potential for UAV swarm ISAC systems.

Transport of indirect excitons and exciton mediated spin transport in a van der Waals heterostructure in magnetic fields

We studied transport of indirect excitons (IXs) and IX mediated spin transport in a MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ van der Waals heterostructure in magnetic fields up to 8 T. We observed the long-range IX transport and the long-range IX mediated spin transport in the magnetic fields. The IX transport and spin transport are characterized by the 1/e decay distances reaching $\sim$ 100 micrometers. The decay distance of the spin transport correlates with the decay distance of IX transport. These decay distances first increase and then decrease with increasing IX density for all studied magnetic fields. The long-range IX transport and the long-range spin transport in the magnetic fields are consistent with the similar long-range transport in zero magnetic field.

CKM-Enabled Joint Spatial-Doppler Domain Clutter Suppression for Low-Altitude UAV ISAC

The rapid development of low-altitude economy has placed higher demands on the sensing of small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) targets. However, the complex and dynamic low-altitude environment, like the urban and mountainous areas, makes clutter a significant factor affecting the sensing performance. Traditional clutter suppression methods based on Doppler difference or signal strength are inadequate for scenarios with dynamic clutter and slow-moving targets like low-altitude UAVs. In this paper, motivated by the concept of channel knowledge map (CKM), we propose a novel clutter suppression technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, by leveraging a new type of CKM named clutter angle map (CLAM). CLAM is a site-specific database, containing location-specific primary clutter angles for the coverage area of the ISAC base station (BS). With CLAM, the sensing signal components corresponding to the clutter environment can be effectively removed before target detection and parameter estimation, which greatly enhances the sensing performance. Besides, to take into account the scenarios when the targets and clutters are in close directions so that pure CLAM-based spatial domain clutter suppression is no longer effective, we further propose a two-step CLAM-enabled joint spatial-Doppler domain clutter suppression algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed technique effectively suppresses clutter and enhances target sensing performance, achieving accurate parameter estimation for sensing slow-moving low-altitude UAV targets.

Cost-Effective XL-MIMO Communication with Cylinder Directly-Connected Antenna Array

Extremely large-scale multi-input multi-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology for the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks, thanks to its superior spatial resolution and beamforming gains. In order to realize XL-MIMO costeffectively, an innovative ray antenna array (RAA) architecture with directly-connected uniform linear array (ULA) was recently proposed, which achieves flexible beamforming without relying on traditional analog phase shifters or digital beamforming. However, RAA suffers from the signal blockage issue since its ray-configured ULAs are placed in the same plane. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel antenna array architecture termed cylinder directly-connected antenna array (DCAA), which is achieved via multiple simple uniform circular array (sUCA) with carefully designed orientations in a layered three-dimensional structure. The so-called sUCA partitions the uniform circular array (UCA) into two sub-arrays where each sub-array has all antenna elements directly connected to achieve a desired beam direction corresponding to the sub-array's physical orientation, thus achieving full spatial coverage. Compared with the conventional ULA architecture with hybrid analog/digital beamforming (HBF), the proposed cylinder DCAA can achieve uniform spatial resolution, enhanced communication rate and lower hardware costs. Simulation results are provided to validate the promised gains of cylinder DCAA, demonstrating its great potential for high-frequency systems such as millimeter wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) systems.

Interference dislocations adjacent to emission spot

We studied interference dislocations (forks) adjacent to an emission spot in an interference pattern. The adjacent interference dislocations are observed in emission of excitons in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide and in emission of spatially indirect excitons, also known as interlayer excitons, in a van der Waals heterostructure. The simulations show that the adjacent interference dislocations appear due to the moiré effect in combined interference patterns produced by constituting parts of the emission spot. The adjacent interference dislocations can appear in interference images for various spatially modulated emission patterns.

Full-Dimensional Beamforming for Multi-User MIMO-OFDM ISAC for Low-Altitude UAV with Zero Sensing Resource Allocation

Low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to play an important role for low-altitude economy with a wide range of applications like precise agriculture, aerial delivery and surveillance. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key technology to enable the large-scale deployment and routine usage of UAVs by providing both communication and sensing services efficiently. For UAV ISAC systems, as UAV often acts as both a communication user equipment (UE) and a sensing target, traditional ISAC systems that usually allocate dedicated TF resources for sensing are inefficient due to the severe degradation of communication spectral efficiency. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based ISAC framework for UAVs that eliminates the need for dedicated sensing TF resources, achieving zero TF sensing overhead. By designing the transmit beamforming to meet the requirements for both communication and sensing tasks, our proposed approach enables the communication TF resources to be fully reused for sensing, thereby enhancing both the communication sum rate and the sensing performance in terms of resolution, unambiguous range, and accuracy. Additionally, we introduce a low-complexity target searching beamforming algorithm and a two-stage super-resolution sensing algorithm, which ensure efficient implementation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MIMO-OFDM-ISAC framework not only improves the communication sum rate but also outperforms traditional ISAC systems in sensing performance, making it a promising solution for future ISAC systems to support low-altitude UAVs.

Full-Angle Ray Antenna Array and Omnicell Wireless Communication System

Ray antenna array (RAA) was recently proposed as a novel multi-antenna architecture that arranges multiple massive cheap antenna elements into simple uniform linear arrays (sULAs) with different orientations. Compared with traditional architectures like hybrid analog/digital beamforming with uniform linear array (ULA) and uniform circular array (UCA), RAA has several promising advantages such as significantly reduced hardware cost, higher beamforming gains and the ability of providing uniform angular resolution for all directions. In this paper, we propose a full-angle RAA architecture and an innovative omnicell wireless communication paradigm enabled by full-angle RAA. The proposed full-angle RAA expands RAA's orientation angle to the full angle domain, such that the RAA's advantages can be exploited to all directions. This further enables the new concept of omnicell wireless communication system, with the base station equipped by full-angle RAA and deployed at the center of each cell. Compared to the conventional cell sectoring wireless communication system, the proposed omnicell system is expected to not only significantly reduce the inter-user interference, but also improve the cost efficiency. Extensive analytical and numerical results are provided to compare those key performance indicators such as the spatial resolution and the communication rate of the proposed full-angle RAA based omnicell wireless communication system against the conventional ULA/UCA-based cell sectoring systems.

Long-range spatial extension of exciton states in van der Waals heterostructure

Narrow lines in photoluminescence (PL) spectra of excitons are characteristic of low-dimensional semiconductors. These lines correspond to the emission of exciton states in local minima of a potential energy landscape formed by fluctuations of the local exciton environment in the heterostructure. The spatial extension of such states was in the nanometer range. In this work, we present studies of narrow lines in PL spectra of spatially indirect excitons (IXs) in a MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ van der Waals heterostructure. The narrow lines vanish with increasing IX density. The disappearance of narrow lines correlates with the onset of IX transport, indicating that the narrow lines correspond to localized exciton states. The narrow lines extend over distances reaching several micrometers and over areas reaching ca. ten percent of the sample area. This macroscopic spatial extension of the exciton states, corresponding to the narrow lines, indicates a deviation of the exciton energy landscape from random potential and shows that the excitons are confined in moiré potential with a weak disorder.

A Novel Cost-Effective MIMO Architecture with Ray Antenna Array for Enhanced Wireless Communication Performance

This paper proposes a novel multi-antenna architecture, termed ray antenna array (RAA), which practically enables flexible beamforming and also enhances wireless communication performance for high frequency systems in a cost-effective manner. RAA consists of a large number of inexpensive antenna elements and a few radio frequency (RF) chains. These antenna elements are arranged in a novel ray like structure, where each ray corresponds to one simple uniform linear array (sULA) with a carefully designed orientation. The antenna elements within each sULA are directly connected, so that each sULA is able to form a beam towards a direction matching the ray orientation without relying on any analog or digital beamforming. By further designing a ray selection network (RSN), appropriate sULAs are selected to connect to the RF chains for subsequent baseband processing. Compared to conventional multi-antenna architectures such as the uniform linear array (ULA) with hybrid analog/digital beamforming (HBF), the proposed RAA enjoys three appealing advantages: (i) finer and uniform angular resolution for all signal directions; (ii) enhanced beamforming gain by using antenna elements with higher directivity, as each sULA is only responsible for a small portion of the total angle coverage range; and (iii) dramatically reduced hardware cost since no phase shifters are required, which are expensive and difficult to design in high-frequency systems such as mmWave and THz systems. To validate such advantages, we first present the input-output mathematical model for RAA-based wireless communications. Efficient algorithms for joint RAA beamforming and ray selection are then proposed for single-user and multi-user RAA-based wireless communications. Simulation results demonstrate that RAA achieves superior performance compared to the conventional ULA with HBF, while significantly reducing hardware cost.

Ray Antenna Array: A Novel Cost-Effective Multi-Antenna Architecture for Enhanced Wireless Communication

This paper proposes a novel multi-antenna architecture, termed ray antenna array (RAA), which aims to enhance wireless communication performance in a cost-effective manner. RAA is composed of massive cheap antenna elements and a few radio frequency (RF) chains. The massive antenna elements are arranged in a novel ray-like structure, with each ray corresponding to a simple uniform linear array (sULA) with a carefully designed orientation. The antenna elements of each sULA are directly connected to an RF combiner, so that the sULA in each ray is able to form a beam towards a direction matching the ray orientation without relying on any analog or digital beamforming. By further designing a ray selection network (RSN), appropriate sULAs are selected to connect to the RF chains for further baseband processing. Compared to conventional multi-antenna architectures like hybrid analog/digital beamforming (HBF), the proposed RAA has two major advantages. First, it can significantly reduce hardware costs since no phase shifters, which are usually expensive especially in high-frequency systems, are required. Besides, RAA can greatly improve system performance by configuring antenna elements with higher directionality, as each sULA only needs to be responsible for a portion of the total coverage angle. To demonstrate such advantages, in this paper, we first present the input-output model for RAA-based wireless communications, based on which the ray orientations of the RAA are designed. Furthermore, efficient algorithms for joint ray selection and beamforming are proposed for single-user and multi-user RAA-based wireless communications. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of RAA compared to HBF while significantly reducing hardware cost.

Mott transition in excitonic Bose polarons

For a neutral system of positive and negative charges, such as atoms in a crystal, increasing the density causes the Mott transition from bound electrons to free electrons. The density of optically generated electron-hole systems can be controlled in situ by the power of optical excitation that enables the Mott transition from excitons, the bound pairs of electrons and holes, to free electrons and holes with increasing density. These Mott transitions occur in systems of pairs of the same kind, such as atoms or excitons. However, a different type of the Mott transition can occur for Bose polarons. A Bose polaron is a mobile particle of one kind in a Bose gas of particles of another kind. For the Mott transition in polarons, the polaron states vanish with increasing density of the surrounding gas. In this paper, we present the observation of this type of the Mott transition and the measurement of the Mott transition parameter $n_{\rm M}^{1/2} a_{\rm B}$ in 2D excitonic Bose polarons.

How Does CP Length Affect the Sensing Range for OFDM-ISAC?

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which has been the dominating waveform for contemporary wireless communications, is also regarded as a competitive candidate for future integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. Existing works on OFDM-ISAC usually assume that the maximum sensing range should be limited by the cyclic prefix (CP) length since inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) should be avoided. However, in this paper, we provide rigorous analysis to reveal that the random data embedded in OFDM-ISAC signal can actually act as a free ``mask" for ISI, which makes ISI/ICI random and hence greatly attenuated after radar signal processing. The derived signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in the range profile demonstrates that the maximum sensing range of OFDM-ISAC can greatly exceed the ISI-free distance that is limited by the CP length, which is validated by simulation results. To further mitigate power degradation for long-range targets, a novel sliding window sensing method is proposed, which iteratively detects and cancels short-range targets before shifting the detection window. The shifted detection window can effectively compensate the power degradation due to insufficient CP length for long-range targets. Such results provide valuable guidance for the CP length design in OFDM-ISAC systems.

Prototyping and Experimental Results for ISAC-based Channel Knowledge Map

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is a novel approach for achieving environment-aware communication and sensing. This paper presents an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)-based CKM prototype system, demonstrating the mutualistic relationship between ISAC and CKM. The system consists of an ISAC base station (BS), a user equipment (UE), and a server. By using a shared orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform over the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, the ISAC BS is able to communicate with the UE while simultaneously sensing the environment and acquiring the UE's location. The prototype showcases the complete process of the construction and application of the ISAC-based CKM. For CKM construction phase, the BS stores the UE's channel feedback information in a database indexed by the UE's location, including beam indices and channel gain. For CKM application phase, the BS looks up the best beam index from the CKM based on the UE's location to achieve training-free mmWave beam alignment. The experimental results show that ISAC can be used to construct or update CKM while communicating with UEs, and the pre-learned CKM can assist ISAC for training-free beam alignment.

Achieving Full-Bandwidth Sensing Performance with Partial Bandwidth Allocation for ISAC

This letter studies an uplink integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system using discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) transmission. We try to answer the following fundamental question: With only a fractional bandwidth allocated to the user with sensing task, can the same delay resolution and unambiguous range be achieved as if all bandwidth were allocated to it? We affirmatively answer the question by proposing a novel two-stage delay estimation (TSDE) method that exploits the following facts: without increasing the allocated bandwidth, higher delay resolution can be achieved via distributed subcarrier allocation compared to its collocated counterpart, while there is a trade-off between delay resolution and unambiguous range by varying the decimation factor of subcarriers. Therefore, the key idea of the proposed TSDE method is to first perform coarse delay estimation with collocated subcarriers to achieve a large unambiguous range, and then use distributed subcarriers with optimized decimation factor to enhance delay resolution while avoiding delay ambiguity. Our analysis shows that the proposed TSDE method can achieve the full-bandwidth delay resolution and unambiguous range, by using only at most half of the full bandwidth, provided that the channel delay spread is less than half of the unambiguous range. Numerical results show the superiority of the proposed method over the conventional method with collocated subcarriers.
