Multi-Floor Exploration for Ground Robots via an Incremental Reachable Graph and Structural Priors

Autonomous exploration of multi-floor buildings remains challenging for ground robots because conventional 2D and 2.5D maps cannot represent overlapping traversable surfaces such as stairs, ramps, and multiple reachable elevations. This letter presents a multi-floor exploration framework based on an incremental reachable graph. Built as a sparse graph over reachable support surfaces, the graph preserves potentially valid connectivity through tentative graph elements under sparse observations and enables stable, physically reachable frontier detection. To guide exploration beyond the currently mapped floor, we project task-zone priors from an explored floor to initialize a hypothetical graph on the target floor and reconcile it incrementally with incoming observations. A hierarchical planner then jointly reasons over confirmed and hypothetical structures for global guidance. In simulation, the proposed method demonstrates improved exploration efficiency and mapping completeness compared to evaluated baselines. Furthermore, onboard real-world experiments validate its practical feasibility and real-time performance.

Challenges and opportunities in piezoelectric polymers: Effect of oriented amorphous fraction in ferroelectric semicrystalline polymers

Despite extensive research on piezoelectric polymers since the discovery of piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in 1969, the fundamental physics of polymer piezoelectricity has remained elusive. Based on the classic principle of piezoelectricity, polymer piezoelectricity should originate from the polar crystalline phase. Surprisingly, the crystal contribution to the piezoelectric strain coefficient d31 is determined to be less than 10%, primarily owing to the difficulty in changing the molecular bond lengths and bond angles. Instead, >85% contribution is from Poisson's ratio, which is closely related to the oriented amorphous fraction (OAF) in uniaxially stretched films of semicrystalline ferroelectric (FE) polymers. In this perspective, the semicrystalline structure-piezoelectric property relationship is revealed using PVDF-based FE polymers as a model system. In melt-processed FE polymers, the OAF is often present and links the crystalline lamellae to the isotropic amorphous fraction. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the electrostrictive conformation transformation of the OAF chains induces a polarization change upon the application of either a stress (the direct piezoelectric effect) or an electric field (the converse piezoelectric effect). Meanwhile, relaxor-like secondary crystals in OAF (SCOAF), which are favored to grow in the extended-chain crystal (ECC) structure, can further enhance the piezoelectricity. However, the ECC structure is difficult to achieve in PVDF homopolymers without high-pressure crystallization. We have discovered that high-power ultrasonication can effectively induce SCOAF in PVDF homopolymers to improve its piezoelectric performance. Finally, we envision that the electrostrictive OAF mechanism should also be applicable for other FE polymers such as odd-numbered nylons and piezoelectric biopolymers.

Decision Fusion Network with Perception Fine-tuning for Defect Classification

Surface defect inspection is an important task in industrial inspection. Deep learning-based methods have demonstrated promising performance in this domain. Nevertheless, these methods still suffer from misjudgment when encountering challenges such as low-contrast defects and complex backgrounds. To overcome these issues, we present a decision fusion network (DFNet) that incorporates the semantic decision with the feature decision to strengthen the decision ability of the network. In particular, we introduce a decision fusion module (DFM) that extracts a semantic vector from the semantic decision branch and a feature vector for the feature decision branch and fuses them to make the final classification decision. In addition, we propose a perception fine-tuning module (PFM) that fine-tunes the foreground and background during the segmentation stage. PFM generates the semantic and feature outputs that are sent to the classification decision stage. Furthermore, we present an inner-outer separation weight matrix to address the impact of label edge uncertainty during segmentation supervision. Our experimental results on the publicly available datasets including KolektorSDD2 (96.1% AP) and Magnetic-tile-defect-datasets (94.6% mAP) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Triangle Counting Rule: An Approach to Forecast the Magnetic Properties of Benzenoid Polycyclic Hydrocarbons

Open-shell benzenoid polycyclic hydrocarbons (BPHs) are promising materials for future quantum applications. However, the search and realization of open-shell BPHs with desired properties is a challenging task due to the gigantic chemical space of BPHs, requiring new strategies for both theoretical understanding and experimental advancement. In this work, by building a structure database of BPHs through graphical enumeration, performing data-driven analysis, and combining tight-binding and mean-field Hubbard calculations, we discovered that the number of the internal vertices of the BPH graphs is closely correlated to their open-shell characters. We further established a series of simple rules, the triangle counting rule (TCR), to predict the magnetic ground state of BPHs. These findings not only provide a database of open-shell BPHs, but also extend the well-known Lieb's theorem and Ovchinnikov's rule and provide a straightforward method for designing open-shell carbon nanostructures. These insights may aid in the exploration of emerging quantum phases and the development of magnetic carbon materials for technology applications.
