Machine learning accelerates fuel cell life testing

Accelerated life testing (ALT) can significantly reduce the economic, time, and labor costs of life testing in the process of equipment, device, and material research and development (R&D), and improve R&D efficiency. This paper proposes a performance characterization data prediction (PCDP) method and a life prediction-driven ALT (LP-ALT) method to accelerate the life test of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The PCDP method can accurately predict different PCD using only four impedances (real and imaginary) corresponding to a high frequency and a medium frequency, greatly shortening the measurement time of offline PCD and reducing the difficulty of life testing. The test results on an open source life test dataset containing 42 PEMFCs show that compared with the determination coefficient (R^2) results of predicted aging indicators, including limiting current, total mass transport resistance, electrochemically active surface area, and crossover current, obtained based on the measured PCD, the R^2 results of predicted aging indicators based on the predicted PCD is only reduced by 0.04, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.06, respectively. The LP-ALT method can shorten the life test time through early life prediction. Test results on the same open-source life test dataset of PEMFCs show that the acceleration ratio of the LP-ALT method can reach 30 times under the premise of ensuring that the minimum R^2 of the prediction results of different aging indicators, including limiting current, total mass transport resistance, and electrochemically active surface area, is not less than 0.89. Combining the different performance characterization data predicted by the PCDP method and the life prediction of the LP-ALT method, the diagnosis and prognosis of PEMFCs and their components can be achieved.

SeLIP: Similarity Enhanced Contrastive Language Image Pretraining for Multi-modal Head MRI

Despite that deep learning (DL) methods have presented tremendous potential in many medical image analysis tasks, the practical applications of medical DL models are limited due to the lack of enough data samples with manual annotations. By noting that the clinical radiology examinations are associated with radiology reports that describe the images, we propose to develop a foundation model for multi-model head MRI by using contrastive learning on the images and the corresponding radiology findings. In particular, a contrastive learning framework is proposed, where a mixed syntax and semantic similarity matching metric is integrated to reduce the thirst of extreme large dataset in conventional contrastive learning framework. Our proposed similarity enhanced contrastive language image pretraining (SeLIP) is able to effectively extract more useful features. Experiments revealed that our proposed SeLIP performs well in many downstream tasks including image-text retrieval task, classification task, and image segmentation, which highlights the importance of considering the similarities among texts describing different images in developing medical image foundation models.

DexGrasp-Diffusion: Diffusion-based Unified Functional Grasp Synthesis Method for Multi-Dexterous Robotic Hands

The versatility and adaptability of human grasping catalyze advancing dexterous robotic manipulation. While significant strides have been made in dexterous grasp generation, current research endeavors pivot towards optimizing object manipulation while ensuring functional integrity, emphasizing the synthesis of functional grasps following desired affordance instructions. This paper addresses the challenge of synthesizing functional grasps tailored to diverse dexterous robotic hands by proposing DexGrasp-Diffusion, an end-to-end modularized diffusion-based method. DexGrasp-Diffusion integrates MultiHandDiffuser, a novel unified data-driven diffusion model for multi-dexterous hands grasp estimation, with DexDiscriminator, which employs a Physics Discriminator and a Functional Discriminator with open-vocabulary setting to filter physically plausible functional grasps based on object affordances. The experimental evaluation conducted on the MultiDex dataset provides substantiating evidence supporting the superior performance of MultiHandDiffuser over the baseline model in terms of success rate, grasp diversity, and collision depth. Moreover, we demonstrate the capacity of DexGrasp-Diffusion to reliably generate functional grasps for household objects aligned with specific affordance instructions.

Burst-Mode Digital Signal Processing for Coherent Optical Time-Division Multiple Access

As the 50G optical access gradually matures, it is time to discuss Beyond 50G optical access. According to the evolution rules of optical access standards, Beyond 50G optical access data rate may achieve 200Gb/s. Direct detection faces great challenges for Beyond 50G optical access, which makes coherent detection a potential solution. Similar to 50G optical timing-division-multiple access (TDMA), burst-mode digital signal processing (BM-DSP) is also required for Beyond 50G coherent optical TDMA (CO-TDMA). This paper proposes coherent BM-DSP (Co-BM-DSP) based on approximately 10ns designed preambles to process the burst signal for 200G CO-TDMA, which can fast estimate the state of polarization, frequency offset, sampling phase offset, synchronization position, and equalizer coefficients. Meanwhile, for obtaining the equalizer coefficients based on the designed preamble, the channel estimation based on the minimum-mean-square-error criterion is theoretically proven to have a unique solution for ensuring reliability. In conclusion, the proposed Co-BM-DSP based on the designed preambles paves the way for the applications of Beyond 50G CO-TDMA.

Quasi-Distribution Appraisal Based on Piecewise Bézier Curves: An Objective Evaluation Method about Finite Element Analysis

A class of quasi-distribution evaluation criteria based on piecewise Bezier curves is proposed to address the issue of the inability to objectively evaluate finite element models. During the optimization design of mechanical parts, finite element modeling is performed on their stress deformation, and the mesh node shape variable values are converted into distribution histogram data for piecewise Bezier curve fitting. Being dealt with area normalization method, the fitting curve could be regarded as a kind of probability density function (PDF), and its variance could be used to evaluate the finite element modeling results. The situation with the minimum variance is the optimal choice for overall deformation. Numerical experiments have indicated that the new method demonstrated the intrinsic characteristics of the finite element models of difference mechanical parts. As an objective appraisal method for evaluating finite element models, it is both effective and feasible.

Two points are enough

Prognosis and diagnosis play an important role in accelerating the development of lithium-ion batteries, as well as reliable and long-life operation. In this work, we answer an important question: What is the minimum amount of data required to extract features for accurate battery prognosis and diagnosis? Based on the first principle, we successfully extracted the best two-point feature (BTPF) for accurate battery prognosis and diagnosis using the fewest data points (only two) and the simplest feature selection method (Pearson correlation coefficient). The BTPF extraction method is tested on 820 cells from 6 open-source datasets (covering five different chemistry types, seven manufacturers, and three data types). It achieves comparable accuracy to state-of-the-art features in both prognosis and diagnosis tasks. This work challenges the cognition of existing studies on the difficulty of battery prognosis and diagnosis tasks, subverts the fixed pattern of establishing prognosis and diagnosis methods for complex dynamic systems through deliberate feature engineering, highlights the promise of data-driven methods for field battery prognosis and diagnosis applications, and provides a new benchmark for future studies.

You Only Scan Once: A Dynamic Scene Reconstruction Pipeline for 6-DoF Robotic Grasping of Novel Objects

In the realm of robotic grasping, achieving accurate and reliable interactions with the environment is a pivotal challenge. Traditional methods of grasp planning methods utilizing partial point clouds derived from depth image often suffer from reduced scene understanding due to occlusion, ultimately impeding their grasping accuracy. Furthermore, scene reconstruction methods have primarily relied upon static techniques, which are susceptible to environment change during manipulation process limits their efficacy in real-time grasping tasks. To address these limitations, this paper introduces a novel two-stage pipeline for dynamic scene reconstruction. In the first stage, our approach takes scene scanning as input to register each target object with mesh reconstruction and novel object pose tracking. In the second stage, pose tracking is still performed to provide object poses in real-time, enabling our approach to transform the reconstructed object point clouds back into the scene. Unlike conventional methodologies, which rely on static scene snapshots, our method continuously captures the evolving scene geometry, resulting in a comprehensive and up-to-date point cloud representation. By circumventing the constraints posed by occlusion, our method enhances the overall grasp planning process and empowers state-of-the-art 6-DoF robotic grasping algorithms to exhibit markedly improved accuracy.

Coupling strength induced BCS-BEC crossover on phase boundary of pion superfluid

Coupling strength effect on the quark matter with finite isospin chemical potential is studied in a Pauli-Villars regularized NJL model. A BCS-BEC crossover occurs along the phase boundary of pion superfluid phase transition, as increasing coupling strength $G$. For strong coupling cases, the critical isospin chemical potential for pion superfluid phase transition $μ_I^c$ is exactly the same as pion mass in vacuum $M_π$. Around the critical point $μ_I^c$, the pion superfluid quark matter is in BEC state, associated with a fast increase of pion condensate. For weak coupling cases, we obtain $μ_I^c<M_π$, and a mass jump of the Goldstone boson at the critical point $μ_I^c$. The pion superfluid quark matter is in BCS state even around $μ_I^c$, accompanied by a slow increase of pion condensate. Note that $μ_I^c$ is a non-monotonic function of coupling strength $G$. On the other hand, coupling strength effect changes the bulk properties of quark matter. In strong (weak) coupling cases, the EoS of quark matter at finite isospin chemical potential is stiff (soft). Therefore, the compact stars composed of strong (weak) coupling pion superfluid quark matter has a heavier (lighter) mass and larger (smaller) radius.

DR-Pose: A Two-stage Deformation-and-Registration Pipeline for Category-level 6D Object Pose Estimation

Category-level object pose estimation involves estimating the 6D pose and the 3D metric size of objects from predetermined categories. While recent approaches take categorical shape prior information as reference to improve pose estimation accuracy, the single-stage network design and training manner lead to sub-optimal performance since there are two distinct tasks in the pipeline. In this paper, the advantage of two-stage pipeline over single-stage design is discussed. To this end, we propose a two-stage deformation-and registration pipeline called DR-Pose, which consists of completion-aided deformation stage and scaled registration stage. The first stage uses a point cloud completion method to generate unseen parts of target object, guiding subsequent deformation on the shape prior. In the second stage, a novel registration network is designed to extract pose-sensitive features and predict the representation of object partial point cloud in canonical space based on the deformation results from the first stage. DR-Pose produces superior results to the state-of-the-art shape prior-based methods on both CAMERA25 and REAL275 benchmarks. Codes are available at https://github.com/Zray26/DR-Pose.git.

An Efficient FPGA-Based Accelerator for Swin Transformer

Since introduced, Swin Transformer has achieved remarkable results in the field of computer vision, it has sparked the need for dedicated hardware accelerators, specifically catering to edge computing demands. For the advantages of flexibility, low power consumption, FPGAs have been widely employed to accelerate the inference of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and show potential in Transformer-based models. Unlike CNNs, which mainly involve multiply and accumulate (MAC) operations, Transformer involve non-linear computations such as Layer Normalization (LN), Softmax, and GELU. These nonlinear computations do pose challenges for accelerator design. In this paper, to propose an efficient FPGA-based hardware accelerator for Swin Transformer, we focused on using different strategies to deal with these nonlinear calculations and efficiently handling MAC computations to achieve the best acceleration results. We replaced LN with BN, Given that Batch Normalization (BN) can be fused with linear layers during inference to optimize inference efficiency. The modified Swin-T, Swin-S, and Swin-B respectively achieved Top-1 accuracy rates of 80.7%, 82.7%, and 82.8% in ImageNet. Furthermore, We employed strategies for approximate computation to design hardware-friendly architectures for Softmax and GELU computations. We also designed an efficient Matrix Multiplication Unit to handle all linear computations in Swin Transformer. As a conclude, compared with CPU (AMD Ryzen 5700X), our accelerator achieved 1.76x, 1.66x, and 1.25x speedup and achieved 20.45x, 18.60x, and 14.63x energy efficiency (FPS/power consumption) improvement on Swin-T, Swin-S, and Swin-B models, respectively. Compared to GPU (Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti), we achieved 5.05x, 4.42x, and 3.00x energy efficiency improvement respectively. As far as we know, the accelerator we proposed is the fastest FPGA-based accelerator for Swin Transformer.

PEGG-Net: Pixel-Wise Efficient Grasp Generation in Complex Scenes

Vision-based grasp estimation is an essential part of robotic manipulation tasks in the real world. Existing planar grasp estimation algorithms have been demonstrated to work well in relatively simple scenes. But when it comes to complex scenes, such as cluttered scenes with messy backgrounds and moving objects, the algorithms from previous works are prone to generate inaccurate and unstable grasping contact points. In this work, we first study the existing planar grasp estimation algorithms and analyze the related challenges in complex scenes. Secondly, we design a Pixel-wise Efficient Grasp Generation Network (PEGG-Net) to tackle the problem of grasping in complex scenes. PEGG-Net can achieve improved state-of-the-art performance on the Cornell dataset (98.9%) and second-best performance on the Jacquard dataset (93.8%), outperforming other existing algorithms without the introduction of complex structures. Thirdly, PEGG-Net could operate in a closed-loop manner for added robustness in dynamic environments using position-based visual servoing (PBVS). Finally, we conduct real-world experiments on static, dynamic, and cluttered objects in different complex scenes. The results show that our proposed network achieves a high success rate in grasping irregular objects, household objects, and workshop tools. To benefit the community, our trained model and supplementary materials are available at https://github.com/HZWang96/PEGG-Net.

The KiTS21 Challenge: Automatic segmentation of kidneys, renal tumors, and renal cysts in corticomedullary-phase CT

This paper presents the challenge report for the 2021 Kidney and Kidney Tumor Segmentation Challenge (KiTS21) held in conjunction with the 2021 international conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI). KiTS21 is a sequel to its first edition in 2019, and it features a variety of innovations in how the challenge was designed, in addition to a larger dataset. A novel annotation method was used to collect three separate annotations for each region of interest, and these annotations were performed in a fully transparent setting using a web-based annotation tool. Further, the KiTS21 test set was collected from an outside institution, challenging participants to develop methods that generalize well to new populations. Nonetheless, the top-performing teams achieved a significant improvement over the state of the art set in 2019, and this performance is shown to inch ever closer to human-level performance. An in-depth meta-analysis is presented describing which methods were used and how they faired on the leaderboard, as well as the characteristics of which cases generally saw good performance, and which did not. Overall KiTS21 facilitated a significant advancement in the state of the art in kidney tumor segmentation, and provides useful insights that are applicable to the field of semantic segmentation as a whole.

Learning-Free Grasping of Unknown Objects Using Hidden Superquadrics

Robotic grasping is an essential and fundamental task and has been studied extensively over the past several decades. Traditional work analyzes physical models of the objects and computes force-closure grasps. Such methods require pre-knowledge of the complete 3D model of an object, which can be hard to obtain. Recently with significant progress in machine learning, data-driven methods have dominated the area. Although impressive improvements have been achieved, those methods require a vast amount of training data and suffer from limited generalizability. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage approach to predicting and synthesizing grasping poses directly from the point cloud of an object without database knowledge or learning. Firstly, multiple superquadrics are recovered at different positions within the object, representing the local geometric features of the object surface. Subsequently, our algorithm exploits the tri-symmetry feature of superquadrics and synthesizes a list of antipodal grasps from each recovered superquadric. An evaluation model is designed to assess and quantify the quality of each grasp candidate. The grasp candidate with the highest score is then selected as the final grasping pose. We conduct experiments on isolated and packed scenes to corroborate the effectiveness of our method. The results indicate that our method demonstrates competitive performance compared with the state-of-the-art without the need for either a full model or prior training.

GET-DIPP: Graph-Embedded Transformer for Differentiable Integrated Prediction and Planning

Accurately predicting interactive road agents' future trajectories and planning a socially compliant and human-like trajectory accordingly are important for autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we propose a planning-centric prediction neural network, which takes surrounding agents' historical states and map context information as input, and outputs the joint multi-modal prediction trajectories for surrounding agents, as well as a sequence of control commands for the ego vehicle by imitation learning. An agent-agent interaction module along the time axis is proposed in our network architecture to better comprehend the relationship among all the other intelligent agents on the road. To incorporate the map's topological information, a Dynamic Graph Convolutional Neural Network (DGCNN) is employed to process the road network topology. Besides, the whole architecture can serve as a backbone for the Differentiable Integrated motion Prediction with Planning (DIPP) method by providing accurate prediction results and initial planning commands. Experiments are conducted on real-world datasets to demonstrate the improvements made by our proposed method in both planning and prediction accuracy compared to the previous state-of-the-art methods.

Fast and Accurate Optical Fiber Channel Modeling Using Generative Adversarial Network

In this work, a new data-driven fiber channel modeling method, generative adversarial network (GAN) is investigated to learn the distribution of fiber channel transfer function. Our investigation focuses on joint channel effects of attenuation, chromic dispersion, self-phase modulation (SPM), and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. To achieve the success of GAN for channel modeling, we modify the loss function, design the condition vector of input and address the mode collapse for the long-haul transmission. The effective architecture, parameters, and training skills of GAN are also displayed in the paper. The results show that the proposed method can learn the accurate transfer function of the fiber channel. The transmission distance of modeling can be up to 1000 km and can be extended to arbitrary distance theoretically. Moreover, GAN shows robust generalization abilities under different optical launch powers, modulation formats, and input signal distributions. Comparing the complexity of GAN with the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), the total multiplication number is only 2% of SSFM and the running time is less than 0.1 seconds for 1000-km transmission, versus 400 seconds using the SSFM under the same hardware and software conditions, which highlights the remarkable reduction in complexity of the fiber channel modeling.

Automatic acute ischemic stroke lesion segmentation using semi-supervised learning

Ischemic stroke is a common disease in the elderly population, which can cause long-term disability and even death. However, the time window for treatment of ischemic stroke in its acute stage is very short. To fast localize and quantitively evaluate the acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesions, many deep-learning-based lesion segmentation methods have been proposed in the literature, where a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained on hundreds of fully labeled subjects with accurate annotations of AIS lesions. Despite that high segmentation accuracy can be achieved, the accurate labels should be annotated by experienced clinicians, and it is therefore very time-consuming to obtain a large number of fully labeled subjects. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised method to automatically segment AIS lesions in diffusion weighted images and apparent diffusion coefficient maps. By using a large number of weakly labeled subjects and a small number of fully labeled subjects, our proposed method is able to accurately detect and segment the AIS lesions. In particular, our proposed method consists of three parts: 1) a double-path classification net (DPC-Net) trained in a weakly-supervised way is used to detect the suspicious regions of AIS lesions; 2) a pixel-level K-Means clustering algorithm is used to identify the hyperintensive regions on the DWIs; and 3) a region-growing algorithm combines the outputs of the DPC-Net and the K-Means to obtain the final precise lesion segmentation. In our experiment, we use 460 weakly labeled subjects and 15 fully labeled subjects to train and fine-tune the proposed method. By evaluating on a clinical dataset with 150 fully labeled subjects, our proposed method achieves a mean dice coefficient of 0.642, and a lesion-wise F1 score of 0.822.

Automated Segmentation of Brain Gray Matter Nuclei on Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Using Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Abnormal iron accumulation in the brain subcortical nuclei has been reported to be correlated to various neurodegenerative diseases, which can be measured through the magnetic susceptibility from the quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). To quantitively measure the magnetic susceptibility, the nuclei should be accurately segmented, which is a tedious task for clinicians. In this paper, we proposed a double-branch residual-structured U-Net (DB-ResUNet) based on 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically segment such brain gray matter nuclei. To better tradeoff between segmentation accuracy and the memory efficiency, the proposed DB-ResUNet fed image patches with high resolution and the patches with low resolution but larger field of view into the local and global branches, respectively. Experimental results revealed that by jointly using QSM and T$_\text{1}$ weighted imaging (T$_\text{1}$WI) as inputs, the proposed method was able to achieve better segmentation accuracy over its single-branch counterpart, as well as the conventional atlas-based method and the classical 3D-UNet structure. The susceptibility values and the volumes were also measured, which indicated that the measurements from the proposed DB-ResUNet are able to present high correlation with values from the manually annotated regions of interest.
