Structural Controllability of a Consensus Network with Multiple Leaders

This paper examines the structural controllability for a group of agents, called followers, connected to each other based on the consensus law under commands of multiple leaders, which are agents with superior capabilities, over a fixed communication topology. It is proved that the graph-theoretic sufficient and necessary condition for the set of followers to be structurally controllable under the leaders' commands is leader-follower connectivity of the associated graph topology. This shrinks to graph connectivity for the case of solo leader. In the approach, we explicitly put into account the dependence among the entries of the system matrices for a consensus network using the linear parameterization technique introduced in [1].

A New Hybrid Half-Duplex/Full-Duplex Relaying System with Antenna Diversity

The hybrid half-duplex/full-duplex (HD/FD) relaying scheme is an effective paradigm to overcome the negative effects of the self-interference incurred by the full-duplex (FD) mode. However, traditional hybrid HD/FD scheme does not consider the diversity gain incurred by the multiple antennas of the FD node when the system works in the HD mode, leading to the waste of the system resources. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid HD/FD relaying scheme, which utilizes both the antennas of the FD relay node for reception and transmission when the system works in the HD mode. With multiple antennas, the maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission is adopted to process the signals at the relay node. Based on this scheme, we derive the exact closed-form system outage probability and conduct various numerical simulations. The results show that the proposed scheme remarkably improves the system outage performance over the traditional scheme, and demonstrate that the proposed scheme can more effectively alleviate the adverse effects of the residual self-interference.

Optimization and Analysis of Probabilistic Caching in $N$-tier Heterogeneous Networks

In this paper, we study the probabilistic caching for an $N$-tier wireless heterogeneous network (HetNet) using stochastic geometry. A general and tractable expression of the successful delivery probability (SDP) is first derived. We then optimize the caching probabilities for maximizing the SDP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. The problem is proved to be convex and solved efficiently. We next establish an interesting connection between $N$-tier HetNets and single-tier networks. Unlike the single-tier network where the optimal performance only depends on the cache size, the optimal performance of $N$-tier HetNets depends also on the BS densities. The performance upper bound is, however, determined by an equivalent single-tier network. We further show that with uniform caching probabilities regardless of content popularities, to achieve a target SDP, the BS density of a tier can be reduced by increasing the cache size of the tier when the cache size is larger than a threshold; otherwise the BS density and BS cache size can be increased simultaneously. It is also found analytically that the BS density of a tier is inverse to the BS cache size of the same tier and is linear to BS cache sizes of other tiers.

Artificial Interference Aided Physical Layer Security in Cache-enabled Heterogeneous Networks

Caching popular contents is a promising way to offload the mobile data traffic in wireless networks, but so far the potential advantage of caching in improving physical layer security (PLS) is rarely considered. In this paper, we contribute to the design and theoretical understanding of exploiting the caching ability of users to improve the PLS in a wireless heterogeneous network (HetNet). In such network, the base station (BS) ensures the secrecy of communication by utilizing some of the available power to transmit a pre-cached file, such that only the eavesdropper's channel is degraded. Accordingly, the node locations of BSs, users and eavesdroppers are first modeled as mutually independent poisson point processes (PPPs) and the corresponding file access protocol is developed. We then derive analytical expressions of two metrics, average secrecy rate and secrecy coverage probability, for the proposed system. Numerical results are provided to show the significant security advantages of the proposed network and to characterize the impact of network resource on the secrecy metrics.

Design and Optimization of VoD schemes with Client Caching in Wireless Multicast Networks

Due to the explosive growth in multimedia traffic, the scalability of video-on-demand (VoD) services becomes increasingly important. By exploiting the potential cache ability at the client side, the performance of VoD multicast delivery can be improved through video segment pre-caching. In this paper, we address the performance limits of client caching enabled VoD schemes in wireless multicast networks with asynchronous requests. Both reactive and proactive systems are investigated. Specifically, for the reactive system where videos are transmitted on demand, we propose a joint cache allocation and multicast delivery scheme to minimize the average bandwidth consumption under the zero-delay constraint. For the proactive system where videos are periodically broadcasted, a joint design of the cache-bandwidth allocation algorithm and the delivery mechanism is developed to minimize the average waiting time under the total bandwidth constraint. In addition to the full access pattern where clients view videos in their entirety, we further consider the access patterns with random endpoints, fixed-size intervals and downloading demand, respectively. The impacts of different access patterns on the resource-allocation algorithm and the delivery mechanism are elaborated. Simulation results validate the accuracy of the analytical results and also provide useful insights in designing VoD networks with client caching.

Optimal Task Scheduling in Communication-Constrained Mobile Edge Computing Systems for Wireless Virtual Reality

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is expected to be an effective solution to deliver 360-degree virtual reality (VR) videos over wireless networks. In contrast to previous computation-constrained MEC framework, which reduces the computation-resource consumption at the mobile VR device by increasing the communication-resource consumption, we develop a communications-constrained MEC framework to reduce communication-resource consumption by increasing the computation-resource consumption and exploiting the caching resources at the mobile VR device in this paper. Specifically, according to the task modularization, the MEC server can only deliver the components which have not been stored in the VR device, and then the VR device uses the received components and the corresponding cached components to construct the task, resulting in low communication-resource consumption but high delay. The MEC server can also compute the task by itself to reduce the delay, however, it consumes more communication-resource due to the delivery of entire task. Therefore, we then propose a task scheduling strategy to decide which computation model should the MEC server operates, in order to minimize the communication-resource consumption under the delay constraint. Finally, we discuss the tradeoffs between communications, computing, and caching in the proposed system.

Distributed Kalman filtering with minimum-time consensus algorithm

Fueled by applications in sensor networks, these years have witnessed a surge of interest in distributed estimation and filtering. A new approach is hereby proposed for the Distributed Kalman Filter (DKF) by integrating a local covariance computation scheme. Compared to existing well-established DKF methods, the virtue of the present approach lies in accelerating the convergence of the state estimates to those of the Centralized Kalman Filter (CKF). Meanwhile, an algorithm is proposed that allows each node to compute the averaged measurement noise covariance matrix within a minimal discrete-time running steps in a distributed way. Both theoretical analysis and extensive numerical simulations are conducted to show the feasibility and superiority of the proposed method.

Signal Shaping for Two-User Gaussian Multiple Access Channels with Computation: Beyond the Cut-Set Bound

In this paper, we investigate the signal shaping in a two-user discrete time memoryless Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) with computation. It is shown that by optimizing input probability distribution, the transmission rate per transmitter is beyond the cut-set bound. In contrast with the single-user discrete memoryless channel, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is no longer a good approximation to the optimal input probability distribution for this discrete-time Gaussian MAC with computation. Specifically, we derive and analyze the mutual information for this channel. Because of the computation in the destination, the mutual information is not concave in general on the input probability distribution, and then primal-dual interior-point method is used to solve this non-convex problem. Finally, some good input probability distributions for 16-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) constellation are obtained and achieve $4.0349$ dB gain over the cut-set bound for the target transmission rate $3.0067$ bits/(channel use).

Performance Analysis for Training-Based Multi-Pair Two-Way Full-Duplex Relaying with Massive Antennas

This paper considers a multi-pair two-way amplify-and-forward relaying system, where multiple pairs of full-duplex users are served via a full-duplex relay with massive antennas, and the relay adopts maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) processing. The orthogonal pilot scheme and the least square method are firstly exploited to estimate the channel state information (CSI). When the number of relay antennas is finite, we derive an approximate sum rate expression which is shown to be a good predictor of the ergodic sum rate, especially in large number of antennas. Then the corresponding achievable rate expression is obtained by adopting another pilot scheme which estimates the composite CSI for each user pair to reduce the pilot overhead of channel estimation. We analyze the achievable rates of the two pilot schemes and then show the relative merits of the two methods. Furthermore, power allocation strategies for users and the relay are proposed based on sum rate maximization and max-min fairness criterion, respectively. Finally, numerical results verify the accuracy of the analytical results and show the performance gains achieved by the proposed power allocation.

Cache-enabled Uplink Transmission in Wireless Small Cell Networks

It is starting to become a big trend in the era of social networking that people produce and upload user-generated contents to Internet via wireless networks, bringing a significant burden on wireless uplink networks. In this paper, we contribute to designing and theoretical understanding of wireless cache-enabled upload transmission in a delay-tolerant small cell network to relieve the burden, and then propose the corresponding scheduling policies for the small base station (SBS) under the infinite and finite cache sizes. Specifically, the cache ability introduced by SBS enables SBS to eliminate the redundancy among the upload contents from users. This strategy not only alleviates the wireless backhual traffic congestion from SBS to a macro base station (MBS), but also improves the transmission efficiency of SBS. We then investigate the scheduling schemes of SBS to offload more data traffic under caching size constraint. Moreover, two operational regions for the wireless cache-enabled upload network, namely, the delay-limited region and the cache-limited region, are established to reveal the fundamental tradeoff between the delay tolerance and the cache ability. Finally, numerical results are provided to demonstrate the significant performance gains of the proposed wireless cache-enabled upload network.

A Mathematical Proof of the Superiority of NOMA Compared to Conventional OMA

While existing works about non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have indicated that NOMA can yield a significant performance gain over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) with fixed resource allocation, it is not clear whether such a performance gain will diminish when optimal resource (Time/Frequency/Power) allocation is carried out. In this paper, the performance comparison between NOMA and conventional OMA systems is investigated, from an optimization point of view. Firstly, by using the idea of power splitting, a closed-form expression for the optimum sum rate of NOMA systems is derived. Then, with rigorous mathematical proofs, we reveal the fact that NOMA can always outperform conventional OMA systems, even if both are equipped with the optimal resource allocation policies. Finally, computer simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of the analytical results.

Opportunistic Channel Sharing in Stochastic Networks with Dynamic Traffic

In this paper, we consider the stochastic network with dynamic traffic. The spatial distribution of access points (APs) and users are first modeled as mutually independent Poisson point processes (PPPs). Different from most previous literatures which assume all the APs are fully loaded, we consider the fact that APs having no data to transmit do not generate interference to users. The APs opportunistically share the channel according to the existence of the packet to be transmitted and the proposed interference suppression strategy. In the interference suppression region, only one AP can be active at a time to transmit the packet on the channel and the other adjacent APs keep silent to reduce serious interference. The idle probability of any AP, influenced by the traffic load and availability of the channels, is analyzed. The density of simultaneously active APs in the network is obtained and the packet loss rate is further elaborated. We reveal the impacts of network features (e.g., AP density, user density and channel state) and service features (e.g., user request, packet size) on the network performance. Simulation results validate our proposed model.

On Optimizing Hierarchical Modulation in AWGN channel

Hierarchical modulation (HM) is able to provide different levels of protection for data streams and achieve a rate region that cannot be realized by traditional orthogonal schemes, such as time division (TD). Nevertheless, criterions and algorithms for general HM design are not available in existing literatures. In this paper, we jointly optimize the constellation positions and binary labels for HM to be used in additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) capacity, our main purpose is to maximize the rate of one data stream, with power constrains and the constrain that the rate of other data streams should be larger than given thresholds. Multi-start interior-point algorithm is used to carry out the constellation optimization problems and methods to reduce optimization complexity are also proposed in this paper. Numerical results verify the performance gains of optimized HM compared with optimized quadrature amplidude modulation (QAM) based HM and other orthogonal transmission methods.

Delay Analysis and Optimization in Cache-enabled Multi-Cell Cooperative Networks

Caching at the base stations (BSs) has been widely adopted to reduce the delivery delay and alleviate the backhaul traffic between BSs and the core network. In this paper, we consider a collaborative content caching scheme among BSs in cache-enabled multi-cell cooperative networks, where the requested contents can be obtained from the associated BS, the other collaborative BSs or the core network. Novelly, we model the stochastic request traffic and derive a closed form expression for the average delay per request based on multi-class processor sharing queuing theory. We then formulate a cooperative caching optimization problem of minimizing the average delay under the finite cache size constraint at BSs and show it to be at least NP-complete. Furthermore, we prove it equivalent to the maximization of a monotone submodular function subject to matroid constraints, allowing us to adopt the common greedy algorithm with 1/2 performance guarantee. A heuristic greedy caching strategy is also developed, achieving a better performance than the conventional greedy solution. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analytical results and demonstrate the performance gains obtained by our proposed caching scheme.

The three primary colors of mobile systems

In this paper, we present the notion of "mobile 3C systems in which the "Communications", "Computing", and "Caching" (i.e., 3C) make up the three primary resources/funcationalties, akin to the three primary colors, for a mobile system. We argue that in future mobile networks, the roles of computing and caching are as intrinsic and essential as communications, and only the collective usage of these three primary resources can support the sustainable growth of mobile systems. By defining the 3C resources in their canonical forms, we reveal the important fact that "caching" affects the mobile system performance by introducing non-causality into the system, whereas "computing" achieves capacity gains by performing logical operations across mobile system entities. Many existing capacity-enhancing techniques such as coded multicast, collaborative transmissions, and proactive content pushing can be cast into the native 3C framework for analytical tractability. We further illustrate the mobile 3C concepts with practical examples, including a system on broadcast-unicast convergence for massive media content delivery. The mobile 3C design paradigm opens up new possibilities as well as key research problems bearing academic and practice significance.

Optimal Caching Placement for D2D Assisted Wireless Caching Networks

In this paper, we devise the optimal caching placement to maximize the offloading probability for a two-tier wireless caching system, where the helpers and a part of users have caching ability. The offloading comes from the local caching, D2D sharing and the helper transmission. In particular, to maximize the offloading probability we reformulate the caching placement problem for users and helpers into a difference of convex (DC) problem which can be effectively solved by DC programming. Moreover, we analyze the two extreme cases where there is only help-tier caching network and only user-tier. Specifically, the placement problem for the helper-tier caching network is reduced to a convex problem, and can be effectively solved by the classical water-filling method. We notice that users and helpers prefer to cache popular contents under low node density and prefer to cache different contents evenly under high node density. Simulation results indicate a great performance gain of the proposed caching placement over existing approaches.

Analysis on Cache-enabled Wireless Heterogeneous Networks

Caching the popular multimedia content is a promising way to unleash the ultimate potential of wireless networks. In this paper, we contribute to proposing and analyzing the cache-based content delivery in a three-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet), where base stations (BSs), relays and device-to-device (D2D) pairs are included. We advocate to proactively cache the popular contents in the relays and parts of the users with caching ability when the network is off-peak. The cached contents can be reused for frequent access to offload the cellular network traffic. The node locations are first modeled as mutually independent Poisson Point Processes (PPPs) and the corresponding content access protocol is developed. The average ergodic rate and outage probability in the downlink are then analyzed theoretically. We further derive the throughput and the delay based on the \emph{multiclass processor-sharing queue} model and the continuous-time Markov process. According to the critical condition of the steady state in the HetNet, the maximum traffic load and the global throughput gain are investigated. Moreover, impacts of some key network characteristics, e.g., the heterogeneity of multimedia contents, node densities and the limited caching capacities, on the system performance are elaborated to provide a valuable insight.
