Knowledge Transfer Pre-training

Pre-training is crucial for learning deep neural networks. Most of existing pre-training methods train simple models (e.g., restricted Boltzmann machines) and then stack them layer by layer to form the deep structure. This layer-wise pre-training has found strong theoretical foundation and broad empirical support. However, it is not easy to employ such method to pre-train models without a clear multi-layer structure,e.g., recurrent neural networks (RNNs). This paper presents a new pre-training approach based on knowledge transfer learning. In contrast to the layer-wise approach which trains model components incrementally, the new approach trains the entire model as a whole but with an easier objective function. This is achieved by utilizing soft targets produced by a prior trained model (teacher model). Compared to the conventional layer-wise methods, this new method does not care about the model structure, so can be used to pre-train very complex models. Experiments on a speech recognition task demonstrated that with this approach, complex RNNs can be well trained with a weaker deep neural network (DNN) model. Furthermore, the new method can be combined with conventional layer-wise pre-training to deliver additional gains.

Deep Speaker Vectors for Semi Text-independent Speaker Verification

Recent research shows that deep neural networks (DNNs) can be used to extract deep speaker vectors (d-vectors) that preserve speaker characteristics and can be used in speaker verification. This new method has been tested on text-dependent speaker verification tasks, and improvement was reported when combined with the conventional i-vector method. This paper extends the d-vector approach to semi text-independent speaker verification tasks, i.e., the text of the speech is in a limited set of short phrases. We explore various settings of the DNN structure used for d-vector extraction, and present a phone-dependent training which employs the posterior features obtained from an ASR system. The experimental results show that it is possible to apply d-vectors on semi text-independent speaker recognition, and the phone-dependent training improves system performance.

Bayesian meta-analysis of correlation coefficients through power prior

To answer the call of introducing more Bayesian techniques to organizational research (e.g., Kruschke, Aguinis, & Joo, 2012; Zyphur & Oswald, 2013), we propose a Bayesian approach for meta-analysis with power prior in this article. The primary purpose of this method is to allow meta-analytic researchers to control the contribution of each individual study to an estimated overall effect size though power prior. This is due to the consideration that not all studies included in a meta-analysis should be viewed as equally reliable, and that by assigning more weights to reliable studies with power prior, researchers may obtain an overall effect size that reflects the population effect size more accurately. We use the relationship between high-performance work systems and financial performance as an example to illustrate how to apply this method to organizational research. We also provide free online software that can be used to conduct Bayesian meta-analysis proposed in this study. Research implications and future directions are discussed.

Production of Gadolinium-loaded Liquid Scintillator for the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

We report on the production and characterization of liquid scintillators for the detection of electron antineutrinos by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. One hundred eighty-five tons of gadolinium-loaded (0.1% by mass) liquid scintillator (Gd-LS) and two hundred tons of unloaded liquid scintillator (LS) were successfully produced from a linear-alkylbenzene (LAB) solvent in six months. The scintillator properties, the production and purification systems, and the quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures are described.

Mediation analysis with missing data through multiple imputation and bootstrap

A method using multiple imputation and bootstrap for dealing with missing data in mediation analysis is introduced and implemented in SAS. Through simulation studies, it is shown that the method performs well for both MCAR and MAR data without and with auxiliary variables. It is also shown that the method works equally well for MNAR data if auxiliary variables related to missingness are included. The application of the method is demonstrated through the analysis of a subset of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth.

Detection of Alpha Particles and Low Energy Gamma Rays by Thermo-Bonded Micromegas in Xenon Gas

Micromegas is a type of micro-pattern gaseous detector currently under R&D for applications in rare event search experiments. Here we report the performance of a Micromegas structure constructed with a micromesh thermo-bonded to a readout plane, motivated by its potential application in two-phase xenon detectors for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. The study is carried out in pure xenon at room temperature. Measurements with alpha particles from the Americium-241 source showed that gas gains larger than 200 can be obtained at xenon pressure up to 3 atm. Gamma rays down to 8 keV were observed with such a device.

Hydrogenation of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Towards the development of a useful mechanism for hydrogen storage, we have studied the hydrogenation of single-walled carbon nanotubes with atomic hydrogen using core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that atomic hydrogen creates C-H bonds with the carbon atoms in the nanotube walls and such C-H bonds can be com-pletely broken by heating to 600 oC. We demonstrate approximately 65+/-15 at % hydrogenation of carbon atoms in the single-walled carbon nanotubes which is equivalent to 5.1+/-1.2 weight % hydrogen capacity. We also show that the hydrogenation is a reversible process.
