Cyclic Lattices, Ideal Lattices and Bounds for the Smoothing Parameter

Cyclic lattices and ideal lattices were introduced by Micciancio in \cite{D2}, Lyubashevsky and Micciancio in \cite{L1} respectively, which play an efficient role in Ajtai's construction of a collision resistant Hash function (see \cite{M1} and \cite{M2}) and in Gentry's construction of fully homomorphic encryption (see \cite{G}). Let $R=Z[x]/\langle ϕ(x)\rangle$ be a quotient ring of the integer coefficients polynomials ring, Lyubashevsky and Micciancio regarded an ideal lattice as the correspondence of an ideal of $R$, but they neither explain how to extend this definition to whole Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, nor exhibit the relationship of cyclic lattices and ideal lattices. In this paper, we regard the cyclic lattices and ideal lattices as the correspondences of finitely generated $R$-modules, so that we may show that ideal lattices are actually a special subclass of cyclic lattices, namely, cyclic integer lattices. In fact, there is a one to one correspondence between cyclic lattices in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and finitely generated $R$-modules (see Theorem \ref{th4} below). On the other hand, since $R$ is a Noether ring, each ideal of $R$ is a finitely generated $R$-module, so it is natural and reasonable to regard ideal lattices as a special subclass of cyclic lattices (see corollary \ref{co3.4} below). It is worth noting that we use more general rotation matrix here, so our definition and results on cyclic lattices and ideal lattices are more general forms. As application, we provide cyclic lattice with an explicit and countable upper bound for the smoothing parameter (see Theorem \ref{th5} below). It is an open problem that is the shortest vector problem on cyclic lattice NP-hard? (see \cite{D2}). Our results may be viewed as a substantial progress in this direction.

Simultaneous Diophantine Approximation in Function Fields

There are abundant results on Diophantine approximation over fields of positive characteristic (see the survey papers [13, 25]), but there is very little information about simultaneous approximation. In this paper, we develop a technique of \geometry of numbers" in positive characteristic, so that we may generalize some of the classical results on simultaneous approximation to the case of function fields. More precisely, we approximate a finite set of Laurent series by rational functions with a common denominator. In particular, the lower bound results we obtain may be regarded as a high dimensional version of the Liouville{ Mahler Theorem on algebraic functions of degree n. As an application, we investigate binary quadratic forms, and determine the exact approximation constant of a quadratic algebraic function. Finally, we give two examples using continued fractions.

On the Polynomial Ramanujan Sums over Finite Fields

The polynomial Ramanujan sum was first introduced by Carlitz [7], and a generalized version by Cohen [10]. In this paper, we study the arithmetical and analytic properties of these sums, derive various fundamental identities, such as H older formula, reciprocity formula, orthogonality relation and Davenport{Hasse type formula. In particular, we show that the special Dirichlet series involving the polynomial Ramanujan sums are, indeed, the entire functions on the whole complex plane, we also give a square mean values estimation. The main results of this paper are new appearance to us, which indicate the particularity of the polynomial Ramanujan sums.

On the distribution of Jacobi sums

Let $\mathbf{F}_q$ be a finite field of $q$ elements. For multiplicative characters $χ_1,\dots, χ_m$ of $\mathbf{F}_q^\times$, we let $J(χ_1,\dots, χ_m)$ denote the Jacobi sum. Nicholas Katz and Zhiyong Zheng showed that for $m=2$, the normalized Jacobi sum $q^{-1/2}J(χ_1,χ_2)$ ($χ_1χ_2$ nontrivial) is asymptotically equidistributed on the unit circle as $q\to \infty$, when $χ_1$ and $χ_2$ run through all nontrivial multiplicative characters of $\mathbf{F}_q^\times$. In this paper, we show a similar property for $m\ge 2$. More generally, we show that the normalized Jacobi sum $q^{-(m-1)/2}J(χ_1,\dots,χ_m)$ ($χ_1\dotsm χ_m$ nontrivial) is asymptotically equidistributed on the unit circle, when $χ_1,\dots, χ_m$ run through arbitrary sets of nontrivial multiplicative characters of $\mathbf{F}_q^\times$ with two of the sets being sufficiently large. The case $m=2$ answers a question of Shparlinski.
