Oxidation-induced ultrafast spin-to-orbital conversion at heavy-metal interfaces

Oxidation engineering provides a route to control orbital degrees of freedom, yet its role in spin-to-orbital conversion remains largely unexplored. Here, we report an efficient spin-to-orbital conversion mechanism driven by interfacial oxidation at heavy-metal interfaces. In W/Co/SiO2 heterostructures, terahertz emission exhibits a time delay that scales linearly with the W thickness, identifying orbital-current transport as the dominant origin. The emission amplitude is approximately three times larger than that of Co/Pt bilayers, indicating highly efficient conversion from spin to orbital angular momentum. Systematic variation of Co thickness, stoichiometry, and interface configuration reveals that the effect originates from oxidation of the W layer at the W/Co interface, which modulates the interfacial orbital texture. We further show that this mechanism is generic across different heavy metals and scales with their spin-orbit coupling strength. These results establish oxidation as an effective handle to engineer spin-to-orbital conversion and provide a general route toward orbitronic terahertz emitters.

Sidelink Positioning: Standardization Advancements, Challenges and Opportunities

With the integration of cellular networks in vertical industries that demand precise location information, such as vehicle-to-everything (V2X), public safety, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), positioning has become an imperative component for future wireless networks. By exploiting a wider spectrum, multiple antennas and flexible architectures, cellular positioning achieves ever-increasing positioning accuracy. Still, it faces fundamental performance degradation when the distance between user equipment (UE) and the base station (BS) is large or in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios. To this end, the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) Rel-18 proposes to standardize sidelink (SL) positioning, which provides unique opportunities to extend the positioning coverage via direct positioning signaling between UEs. Despite the standardization advancements, the capability of SL positioning is controversial, especially how much spectrum is required to achieve the positioning accuracy defined in 3GPP. To this end, this article summarizes the latest standardization advancements of 3GPP on SL positioning comprehensively, covering a) network architecture; b) positioning types; and c) performance requirements. The capability of SL positioning using various positioning methods under different imperfect factors is evaluated and discussed in-depth. Finally, according to the evolution of SL in 3GPP Rel-19, we discuss the possible research directions and challenges of SL positioning.

AI-driven Wireless Positioning: Fundamentals, Standards, State-of-the-art, and Challenges

Wireless positioning technologies hold significant value for applications in autonomous driving, extended reality (XR), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and more. With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), leveraging AI to enhance positioning accuracy and robustness has emerged as a field full of potential. Driven by the requirements and functionalities defined in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, AI/machine learning (ML)-based cellular positioning is becoming a key technology to overcome the limitations of traditional methods. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of AI-driven cellular positioning. We begin by reviewing the fundamentals of wireless positioning and AI models, analyzing their respective challenges and synergies. We provide a comprehensive review of the evolution of 3GPP positioning standards, with a focus on the integration of AI/ML in current and upcoming standard releases. Guided by the 3GPP-defined taxonomy, we categorize and summarize state-of-the-art (SOTA) research into two major classes: AI/ML-assisted positioning and direct AI/ML-based positioning. The former includes line-of-sight (LOS)/non-line-of-sight (NLOS) detection, time of arrival (TOA)/time difference of arrival (TDOA) estimation, and angle prediction; the latter encompasses fingerprinting, knowledge-assisted learning, and channel charting. Furthermore, we review representative public datasets and conduct performance evaluations of AI-based positioning algorithms using these datasets. Finally, we conclude by summarizing the challenges and opportunities of AI-driven wireless positioning.

Spin wave propagation in uniform waveguide: effects, modulation and its application

With the advent of the post-Moore era, researches on beyond-Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) approaches have been attracted more and more attention. Magnonics, or spin wave is one of the most promising technology beyond CMOS, which magnons-quanta for spin waves-process the information analogous to electronic charges in electronics. Information transmission by spin waves, which uses the frequency, amplitude and (or) phase to encode information, has a great many of advantages such as extremely low energy loss and wide-band frequency. Moreover, using the nonlinear characteristics of spin waves for information transmission can increase the extra degree of freedom of information. This review provides a tutorial overview over the effects of spin wave propagation and recent research progress in uniform spin wave waveguide. The propagation characteristics of spin waves in uniform waveguides and some special propagation phenomena such as spin wave beam splitting and self-focusing are described by combining experimental phenomena and theoretical formulas. Furthermore, we summarize methods for modulating propagation of spin wave in uniform waveguide, and comment on the advantages and limitations of these methods. The review may promote the development of information transmission technology based on spin waves.

Bias-free reconfigurable magnonic phase shifter based on a spin-current controlled ferromagnetic resonator

Controllable phase modulation plays a pivotal role in the researches of magnonic logic gates. Here we propose a reconfigurable spin-current controlled magnonic phase shifter based on a ferromagnetic resonator. The proposed phase shifter requires no magnetic bias field during operation. The device is directly configured over the waveguide while keeping the original structure of the waveguide unaffected. Numerical micromagnetic simulations show that the phase shifter could yield either a π-phase or no shift depending on the magnetization status of the resonator, which can be controlled by a current pulse. Moreover, the phase-shifting operation could be affected by spin current. At different input current density, the device could be either used as a dynamic controlled phase shifter or a spin-wave valve. Finally, a XNOR magnonic logic gate is demonstrated using the proposed phase shifter. Our work can be a beneficial step to enhance the functionality and compatibility of the magnonic logic circuits.

MuFA (Multi-type Fourier Analyzer): A tool for batch generation of MuMax3 input scripts and multi-type Fourier analysis from micromagnetic simulation output data

We present a tool for batch generation of input scripts and multi-type Fourier analysis from simulation results for the micromagnetic software MuMax3. The introduction of graphical user interface and parameter-sweeping functionality strongly speed up the input scripts creation and accelerate model optimization processes consequently. Three types of important Fourier analysis methods are provided for the acquisition of the quantitative frequency compositions, the spin-wave dispersion curve and the spatial distribution of spin-wave powers at different frequencies, respectively. Since the Fourier analysis is accelerated by parallel computations, the time cost is reduced to an acceptable level even in the presentation of tens of gigabytes data. With the MuMax3 and our proposal, a complete micromagnetic simulating tool chain from scripts generation to post analysis has been developed.

Magnonic waveguide based on exchange-spring magnetic structure

We propose to use a soft/hard exchange-spring coupling bilayer magnetic structure to introduce a narrow channel for spin-wave propagation. We show by micromagnetic simulations that broad-band Damon-Eshbach geometry spin waves can be strongly localized into the channel and propagate effectively with a proper high group velocity. The beamwidth of the bound mode spin waves is almost independent from the frequency and is smaller than 24nm. For a low-frequency excitation, we further investigate the appearance of two other spin beams in the lateral of the channel. In contrast to a domain wall, the channel formed by exchange-spring coupling can be easier to realize in experimental scenarios and holds stronger immunity to surroundings. This work is expected to open new possibilities for energy-efficient spin-wave guiding as well as to help shape the field of beam magnonics.

Voltage-Controlled Nano-Scale Reconfigurable Magnonic Crystal

A nano-scale reconfigurable magnonic crystal is designed using voltage-controlled perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in ferromagnetic-dielectric hetero-structures. A periodic array of gate metallic stripes is placed on top of a MgO/Co structure in order to apply a periodic electric field and to modify the PMA in Co. It is numerically demonstrated that the application of the voltage to the gate stripes modifies the spin-wave propagation and leads to the formation of band gaps in the spin-wave spectrum. The band gaps are dynamically controllable, i.e. it is possible to switch band gaps on and off within a few nanoseconds. The width and the center frequency of the band gaps is defined by the applied voltage. At last, it is shown that the application of the voltage to selected, rather than to all gate stripes allows for a pre-defined modification of the band gap spectra. The proposed voltage-controlled reconfigurable magnonic crystal opens a new way to low power consumption magnonic applications.

Dynamic control of spin wave spectra using spin-polarized currents

We describe a method of controlling the spin wave spectra dynamically in a uniform nanostripe waveguide through spin-polarized currents. A stable periodic magnetization structure is observed when the current flows vertically through the center of nanostripe waveguide. After being excited, the spin wave is transmitted at the sides of the waveguide. Numerical simulations of spin-wave transmission and dispersion curves reveal a single, pronounced band gap. Moreover, the periodic magnetization structure can be turned on and off by the spin-polarized current. The switching process from full rejection to full transmission takes place within less than 3ns. Thus, this type magnonic waveguide can be utilized for low-dissipation spin wave based filters.

Magnetoelectric surface acoustic wave resonator with ultrahigh magnetic field sensitivity

A magnetoelectric surface acoustic wave (MESAW) type device based on piezoelectric/magnetostrictive heterostructure was proposed to use as weak magnetic field sensor. Unlike conventional magnetoelectric bulk laminates or film stacks collecting magnetic field induced electrical charge, the MESAW detects the shift of the center frequency, which highly depends on the magnetic field due to the giant delta E effect and the phase velocity dispersion. The magnetic field sensitivity can reach 10^(-11) Tesla in consideration of 100 Hz frequency accuracy. Additionally, the unique working mechanism of MESAW allows a broadband detection of weak magnetic field even with no bias magnetic field.
