Building the Harness Automatically: Self-Play in Code Distills a Text Harness for Black-Box Optimization

Can an agent learn a numerical search strategy through executable practice and then transfer that strategy as text? We study low-budget black-box optimization, where unaided language models remain well below strong classical optimizers. During development, an agent repeatedly writes and evaluates optimizer programs. It then distills the resulting program and practice record once into a 197-word primary Harness A, which is frozen before evaluation. Harness A reduces Gemini Flash regret by 48\% in an independent $N=30$ study ($p<.001$), enters the GP-BO performance range on the practice family, and lowers mean regret on all three held-out BBOB landscapes. The same text improves every tested Gemini executor and transfers to Claude Sonnet, reducing regret by 43\% and 49\% ($p\leq.005$). An independent end-to-end replication produces Harness B, a different program and text at the same performance tier. The same framework also attains the lowest regret on a sealed YouTube reward-tuning production benchmark. Executable practice is thus a viable way to discover a search policy, and language a portable medium for deploying it.

Tencent Advertising Algorithm Challenge 2025: All-Modality Generative Recommendation

Generative recommender systems are rapidly emerging as a new paradigm for recommendation, where collaborative identifiers and/or multi-modal content are mapped into discrete token spaces and user behavior is modelled with autoregressive sequence models. Despite progress on multi-modal recommendation datasets, there is still a lack of public benchmarks that jointly offer large-scale, realistic and fully all-modality data designed specifically for generative recommendation (GR) in industrial advertising. To foster research in this direction, we organised the Tencent Advertising Algorithm Challenge 2025, a global competition built on top of two all-modality datasets for GR: TencentGR-1M and TencentGR-10M. Both datasets are constructed from real de-identified Tencent Ads logs and contain rich collaborative IDs and multi-modal representations extracted with state-of-the-art embedding models. The preliminary track (TencentGR-1M) provides 1 million user sequences with up to 100 interacted items each, where each interaction is labeled with exposure and click signals, while the final track (TencentGR-10M) scales this to 10 million users and explicitly distinguishes between click and conversion events at both the sequence and target level. This paper presents the task definition, data construction process, feature schema, baseline GR model, evaluation protocol, and key findings from top-ranked and award-winning solutions. Our datasets focus on multi-modal sequence generation in an advertising setting and introduce weighted evaluation for high-value conversion events. We release our datasets at https://huggingface.co/datasets/TAAC2025 and baseline implementations at https://github.com/TencentAdvertisingAlgorithmCompetition/baseline_2025 to enable future research on all-modality generative recommendation at an industrial scale. Recommendation Unlearning via Influence Function

Recommendation unlearning is an emerging task to serve users for erasing unusable data (e.g., some historical behaviors) from a well-trained recommender model. Existing methods process unlearning requests by fully or partially retraining the model after removing the unusable data. However, these methods are impractical due to the high computation cost of full retraining and the highly possible performance damage of partial training. In this light, a desired recommendation unlearning method should obtain a similar model as full retraining in a more efficient manner, i.e., achieving complete, efficient and harmless unlearning. In this work, we propose a new Influence Function-based Recommendation Unlearning (IFRU) framework, which efficiently updates the model without retraining by estimating the influence of the unusable data on the model via the influence function. In the light that recent recommender models use historical data for both the constructions of the optimization loss and the computational graph (e.g., neighborhood aggregation), IFRU jointly estimates the direct influence of unusable data on optimization loss and the spillover influence on the computational graph to pursue complete unlearning. Furthermore, we propose an importance-based pruning algorithm to reduce the cost of the influence function. IFRU is harmless and applicable to mainstream differentiable models. Extensive experiments demonstrate that IFRU achieves more than 250 times acceleration compared to retraining-based methods with recommendation performance comparable to full retraining. Codes are avaiable at https://github.com/baiyimeng/IFRU.

Exact and Efficient Unlearning for Large Language Model-based Recommendation

The evolving paradigm of Large Language Model-based Recommendation (LLMRec) customizes Large Language Models (LLMs) through parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) using recommendation data. The inclusion of user data in LLMs raises privacy concerns. To protect users, the unlearning process in LLMRec, specifically removing unusable data (e.g., historical behaviors) from established LLMRec models, becomes crucial. However, existing unlearning methods are insufficient for the unique characteristics of LLM-Rec, mainly due to high computational costs or incomplete data erasure. In this study, we introduce the Adapter Partition and Aggregation (APA) framework for exact and efficient unlearning while maintaining recommendation performance. APA achieves this by establishing distinct adapters for partitioned training data shards and retraining only the adapters impacted by unusable data for unlearning. To preserve recommendation performance and mitigate considerable inference costs, APA employs parameter-level adapter aggregation with sample-adaptive attention for individual testing samples. Extensive experiments substantiate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed framework
