Acceleration of Ultrahigh Energy Particles from Fast Radio Bursts

Two extreme events in the universe, fast radio bursts (FRBs) and cosmic rays (CRs), could be correlated, where FRBs with extreme field strength near their sources may contribute to CRs. This study investigates localized particle acceleration driven by FRB-like ultra-relativistic electromagnetic pulses in an electron--positron--ion plasma system. It is found ultra-high energy neutral plasma sheets form constantly via the front erosion of an FRB pulse. There are two regimes of ion acceleration depending upon the field strength and the plasma density: the piston regime driven by the Lorentz force of the pulse, and the wakefield regime dominated by charge separation field. The predicted energy scalings align well with particle-in-cell simulations. A power-law energy spectrum with an index close to the CRs naturally emerges during FRBs expansion outward. Detecting high-energy particles possibly produced by FRBs enables deeper insights into their origins and promotes the development of multi-messenger astronomy.

SST: A Simplified Swin Transformer-based Model for Taxi Destination Prediction based on Existing Trajectory

Accurately predicting the destination of taxi trajectories can have various benefits for intelligent location-based services. One potential method to accomplish this prediction is by converting the taxi trajectory into a two-dimensional grid and using computer vision techniques. While the Swin Transformer is an innovative computer vision architecture with demonstrated success in vision downstream tasks, it is not commonly used to solve real-world trajectory problems. In this paper, we propose a simplified Swin Transformer (SST) structure that does not use the shifted window idea in the traditional Swin Transformer, as trajectory data is consecutive in nature. Our comprehensive experiments, based on real trajectory data, demonstrate that SST can achieve higher accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Pair production in strong electric fields

We study the electron-positron pair production process in strong background electric fields with spatio-temporal inhomogeneity in the time-dependent Basis Light-front Quantization approach. We calculate the observables such as the invariant mass and the longitudinal momentum distribution of the produced pairs as functions of evolution time and compare the vacuum decay rate with that of the Schwinger effect. We observe a critical intensity of background field, above which the vacuum decay rate is no longer oscillating with time periodically as in perturbation theory. This work may provide the foundation for the study of the pair production process in strong fields with realistic spacetime structures.
