Monetizing Edge Service in Mobile Internet Ecosystem

In mobile Internet ecosystem, Mobile Users (MUs) purchase wireless data services from Internet Service Provider (ISP) to access to Internet and acquire the interested content services (e.g., online game) from Content Provider (CP). The popularity of intelligent functions (e.g., AI and 3D modeling) increases the computation-intensity of the content services, leading to a growing computation pressure for the MUs' resource-limited devices. To this end, edge computing service is emerging as a promising approach to alleviate the MUs' computation pressure while keeping their quality-of-service, via offloading some computation tasks of MUs to edge (computing) servers deployed at the local network edge. Thus, Edge Service Provider (ESP), who deploys the edge servers and offers the edge computing service, becomes an upcoming new stakeholder in the ecosystem. In this work, we study the economic interactions of MUs, ISP, CP, and ESP in the new ecosystem with edge computing service, where MUs can acquire the computation-intensive content services (offered by CP) and offload some computation tasks, together with the necessary raw input data, to edge servers (deployed by ESP) through ISP. We first study the MU's Joint Content Acquisition and Task Offloading (J-CATO) problem, which aims to maximize his long-term payoff. We derive the off-line solution with crucial insights, based on which we design an online strategy with provable performance. Then, we study the ESP's edge service monetization problem. We propose a pricing policy that can achieve a constant fraction of the ex-post optimal revenue with an extra constant loss for the ESP. Numerical results show that the edge computing service can stimulate the MUs' content acquisition and improve the payoffs of MUs, ISP, and CP.

Tightening the Lieb-Robinson Bound in Locally-Interacting Systems

The Lieb-Robinson (LR) bound rigorously shows that in quantum systems with short-range interactions, the maximum amount of information that travels beyond an effective "light cone" decays exponentially with distance from the light-cone front, which expands at finite velocity. Despite being a fundamental result, existing bounds are often extremely loose, limiting their applications. We introduce a method that dramatically and qualitatively improves LR bounds in models with finite-range interactions. Most prominently, in systems with a large local Hilbert space dimension $D$, our method gives an LR velocity that grows much slower than previous bounds with $D$ as $D\to \infty$. For example, in the Heisenberg model with spin $S$, we find $v\leq$ const. compared to the previous $v\propto S$ which diverges at large $S$, and in multiorbital Hubbard models with $N$ orbitals, we find $v\propto \sqrt{N}$ instead of previous $v\propto N$, and similarly in the $N$-state truncated Bose-Hubbard model and Wen's quantum rotor model. Our bounds also scale qualitatively better in some systems when the spatial dimension or certain model parameters become large, for example in the $d$-dimensional quantum Ising model and perturbed toric code models. Even in spin-1/2 Ising and Fermi-Hubbard models, our method improves the LR velocity by an order of magnitude with typical model parameters, and significantly improves the LR bound at large distance and early time.

PointPWC-Net: A Coarse-to-Fine Network for Supervised and Self-Supervised Scene Flow Estimation on 3D Point Clouds

We propose a novel end-to-end deep scene flow model, called PointPWC-Net, on 3D point clouds in a coarse-to-fine fashion. Flow computed at the coarse level is upsampled and warped to a finer level, enabling the algorithm to accommodate for large motion without a prohibitive search space. We introduce novel cost volume, upsampling, and warping layers to efficiently handle 3D point cloud data. Unlike traditional cost volumes that require exhaustively computing all the cost values on a high-dimensional grid, our point-based formulation discretizes the cost volume onto input 3D points, and a PointConv operation efficiently computes convolutions on the cost volume. Experiment results on FlyingThings3D outperform the state-of-the-art by a large margin. We further explore novel self-supervised losses to train our model and achieve comparable results to state-of-the-art trained with supervised loss. Without any fine-tuning, our method also shows great generalization ability on KITTI Scene Flow 2015 dataset, outperforming all previous methods.

Enhance the performance of navigation: A two-stage machine learning approach

Real time traffic navigation is an important capability in smart transportation technologies, which has been extensively studied these years. Due to the vast development of edge devices, collecting real time traffic data is no longer a problem. However, real traffic navigation is still considered to be a particularly challenging problem because of the time-varying patterns of the traffic flow and unpredictable accidents/congestion. To give accurate and reliable navigation results, predicting the future traffic flow(speed, congestion, volume, etc) in a fast and accurate way is of great importance. In this paper, we adopt the ideas of ensemble learning and develop a two-stage machine learning model to give accurate navigation results. We model the traffic flow as a time series and apply XGBoost algorithm to get accurate predictions on future traffic conditions(1st stage). We then apply the Top K Dijkstra algorithm to find a set of shortest paths from the give start point to the destination as the candidates of the output optimal path. With the prediction results in the 1st stage, we find one optimal path from the candidates as the output of the navigation algorithm. We show that our navigation algorithm can be greatly improved via EOPF(Enhanced Optimal Path Finding), which is based on neural network(2nd stage). We show that our method can be over 7% better than the method without EOPF in many situations, which indicates the effectiveness of our model.

Towards Simultaneous Observation of Path and Interference of Single Photon in a Modified Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

Classical wisdom of wave-particle duality says that it is impossible to observe simultaneously the wave and particle nature of microscopic object. Mathematically the principle requests that the interference visibility V and which-path distinguishability D satisfy an orthodox limit of square(V)+square(D)<=1. This work presents a new wave-particle duality test experiment with single photon in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer and convincingly show the possibility of breaking the limit. The key element of the interferometer is a weakly-scattering total-internal reflection prism surface, which exhibits pronounced single-photon interference with a visibility up to 0.97 and simultaneously provides path distinguishability of 0.83. Apparently square(V)+square(D)=1.63 far exceeds the orthodox limit set by the principle of wave-particle duality for single photon. It is expected that more delicate experiments in future should be able to demonstrate the ultimate regime of square(V)+square(D) approaching 2 and shed new light on the foundations of contemporary quantum mechanics.

Economic Viability of Data Trading with Rollover

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are providing more flexible wireless data services to attract subscribers and increase revenues. For example, the data trading market enables user-flexibility by allowing users to sell leftover data to or buy extra data from each other. The rollover mechanism enables time-flexibility by allowing a user to utilize his own leftover data from the previous month in the current month. In this paper, we investigate the economic viability of offering the data trading market together with the rollover mechanism, to gain a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between the user-flexibility and the time-flexibility. We formulate the interactions between the MNO and mobile users as a multi-slot dynamic game. Specifically, in each time slot (e.g., every day), the MNO first determines the selling and buying prices with the goal of revenue maximization, then each user decides his trading action (by solving a dynamic programming problem) to maximize his long-term payoff. Due to the availability of monthly data rollover, a user's daily trading decision corresponds to a dynamic programming problem with two time scales (i.e., day-to-day and month-to-month). Our analysis reveals an optimal trading policy with a target interval structure, specified by a buy-up-to threshold and a sell-down-to threshold in each time slot. Moreover, we show that the rollover mechanism makes users sell less and buy more data given the same trading prices, hence it increases the total demand while decreasing the total supply in the data trading market. Finally, numerical results based on real-world data unveil that the time-flexible rollover mechanism plays a positive role in the user-flexible data trading market, increasing the MNO's revenue by 25% and all users' payoff by 17% on average.

Multi-Cap Optimization for Wireless Data Plans with Time Flexibility

An effective way for a Mobile network operator (MNO) to improve its revenue is price discrimination, i.e., providing different combinations of data caps and subscription fees. Rollover data plan (allowing the unused data in the current month to be used in the next month) is an innovative data mechanism with time flexibility. In this paper, we study the MNO's optimal multi-cap data plans with time flexibility in a realistic asymmetric information scenario. Specifically, users are associated with multi-dimensional private information, and the MNO designs a contract (with different data caps and subscription fees) to induce users to truthfully reveal their private information. This problem is quite challenging due to the multi-dimensional private information. We address the challenge in two aspects. First, we find that a feasible contract (satisfying incentive compatibility and individual rationality) should allocate the data caps according to users' willingness-to-pay (captured by the slopes of users' indifference curves). Second, for the non-convex data cap allocation problem, we propose a Dynamic Quota Allocation Algorithm, which has a low complexity and guarantees the global optimality. Numerical results show that the time-flexible data mechanisms increase both the MNO's profit (25% on average) and users' payoffs (8.2% on average) under price discrimination.

Duopoly Competition for Mobile Data Plans with Time Flexibility

The growing competition drives the mobile network operators (MNOs) to explore adding time flexibility to the traditional data plan, which consists of a monthly subscription fee, a data cap, and a per-unit fee for exceeding the data cap. The rollover data plan, which allows the unused data of the previous month to be used in the current month, provides the subscribers with the time flexibility. In this paper, we formulate two MNOs' market competition as a three-stage game, where the MNOs decide their data mechanisms (traditional or rollover) in Stage I and the pricing strategies in Stage II, and then users make their subscription decisions in Stage III. Different from the monopoly market where an MNO always prefers the rollover mechanism over the traditional plan in terms of profit, MNOs may adopt different data mechanisms at an equilibrium. Specifically, the high-QoS MNO would gradually abandon the rollover mechanism as its QoS advantage diminishes. Meanwhile, the low-QoS MNO would progressively upgrade to the rollover mechanism. The numerical results show that the market competition significantly limits MNOs' profits, but both MNOs obtain higher profits with the possible choice of the rollover data plan.

A Unified Approach to Holomorphic Anomaly Equations and Quantum Spectral Curves

We present a unified approach to holomorphic anomaly equations and some well-known quantum spectral curves. We develop a formalism of abstract quantum field theory based on the diagrammatics of the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ and derive a quadratic recursion relation for the abstract free energies in terms of the edge-cutting operators. This abstract quantum field theory can be realized by various choices of a sequence of holomorphic functions or formal power series and suitable propagators, and the realized quantum field theory can be represented by formal Gaussian integrals. Various applications are given.

Strings of ultracold molecules in a synthetic dimension

We consider ultracold polar molecules trapped in a unit-filled one-dimensional chain in real space created with an optical lattice or a tweezer array and illuminated by microwaves that resonantly drive transitions within a chain of rotational states. We describe the system by a two-dimensional lattice model, with the first dimension being a lattice in real space and the second dimension being a lattice in a synthetic direction composed of rotational states. We calculate this system's ground-state phase diagram. We show that as the dipole interaction strength is increased, the molecules undergo a phase transition from a two-dimensional gas to a phase in which the molecules bind together and form a string that resembles a one-dimensional object living in the two-dimensional (i.e, one real and one synthetic dimensional) space. We demonstrate this with two complementary techniques: numerical calculations using matrix product state techniques and an analytic solution in the limit of infinitely strong dipole interaction. Our calculations reveal that the string phase at infinite interaction is effectively described by emergent particles living on the string and that this leads to a rich spectrum with excitations missed in earlier mean-field treatments.

Exploring Time Flexibility in Wireless Data Plans

Recently, the mobile network operators (MNOs) are exploring more time flexibility with the rollover data plan, which allows the unused data from the previous month to be used in the current month. Motivated by this industry trend, we propose a general framework for designing and optimizing the mobile data plan with time flexibility. Such a framework includes the traditional data plan, two existing rollover data plans, and a new credit data plan as special cases. Under this framework, we formulate a monopoly MNO's optimal data plan design as a three-stage Stackelberg game: In Stage I, the MNO decides the data mechanism; In Stage II, the MNO further decides the corresponding data cap, subscription fee, and the per-unit fee; Finally in Stage III, users make subscription decisions based on their own characteristics. Through backward induction, we analytically characterize the MNO's profit-maximizing data plan and the corresponding users' subscriptions. Furthermore, we conduct a market survey to estimate the distribution of users' two-dimensional characteristics, and evaluate the performance of different data mechanisms using the real data. We find that a more time-flexible data mechanism increases MNO's profit and users' payoffs, hence improves the social welfare.

Analytic ground state wavefunctions of mean-field $p_x + ip_y$ superconductors with vortices and boundaries

We study Read and Green's mean-field model of the spinless $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor [N.Read and D.Green, Phys. Rev. B 61, 10267 (2000)] at a special set of parameters where we find the analytic expressions for the topologically degenerate ground states and the Majorana modes, including in finite systems with edges and in the presence of an arbitrary number of vortices. The wavefunctions of these ground states are similar (but not always identical) to the Moore-Read Pfaffian states proposed for the $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall system, which are interpreted as the p-wave superconducting states of composite fermions. The similarity in the long-wavelength universal properties is expected from previous work, but at the special point studied herein the wavefunctions are exact even for short-range, non-universal properties. As an application of these results, we show how to obtain the non-Abelian statistics of the vortex Majorana modes by explicitly calculating the analytic continuation of the ground state wavefunctions when vortices are adiabatically exchanged, an approach different from the previous one based on universal arguments. Our results are also useful for constructing particle number-conserving (and interacting) Hamiltonians with exact projected mean-field states.

Deciphering Charging Status, Absolute Quantum Efficiency, and Absorption Cross Section of MultiCarrier States in Single Colloidal Quantum Dot

Upon photo- or electrical-excitation, colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are often found in multi-carrier states due to multi-photon absorption and photo-charging of the QDs. While many of these multi-carrier states are observed in single-dot spectroscopy, their properties are not well studied due to random charging/discharging, emission intensity intermittency, and uncontrolled surface defects of single QD. Here we report in-situ deciphering the charging status, and precisely assessing the absorption cross section, and determining the absolute emission quantum yield of mono-exciton and biexciton states for neutral, positively-charged, and negatively-charged single core/shell CdSe/CdS QD. We uncover very different photon statistics of the three charge states in single QD and unambiguously identify their charge sign together with the information of their photoluminescence decay dynamics. We then show their distinct photoluminescence saturation behaviors and evaluated the absolute values of absorption cross sections and quantum efficiencies of monoexcitons and biexcitons. We demonstrate that addition of an extra hole or electron in a QD changes not only its emission properties but also varies its absorption cross section.

Number-conserving interacting fermion models with exact topological superconducting ground states

We present a method to construct number-conserving Hamiltonians whose ground states exactly reproduce an arbitrarily chosen BCS-type mean-field state. Such parent Hamiltonians can be constructed not only for the usual $s$-wave BCS state, but also for more exotic states of this form, including the ground states of Kitaev wires and 2D topological superconductors. This method leads to infinite families of locally-interacting fermion models with exact topological superconducting ground states. After explaining the general technique, we apply this method to construct two specific classes of models. The first one is a one-dimensional double wire lattice model with Majorana-like degenerate ground states. The second one is a two-dimensional $p_x+ip_y$ superconducting model, where we also obtain analytic expressions for topologically degenerate ground states in the presence of vortices. Our models may provide a deeper conceptual understanding of how Majorana zero modes could emerge in condensed matter systems, as well as inspire novel routes to realize them in experiment.

A unified approach to hadron phenomenology at zero and finite temperatures in a hard-wall AdS/QCD model

We propose a unified approach to study meson, nucleon and $Δ$-baryon properties at zero and finite temperatures in the context of hard-wall AdS/QCD model. We first combine some previous works dealing with mesons and baryons separately, and introduce a new parameter~$ξ$ so that the model could give a universal description of spectrum and couplings of both sectors in a self-consistent way. All observables calculated numerically show reasonable agreement with experimental data. We then study these observables at nonzero temperature by modifying the AdS space-time into AdS-Schwartzchild space-time. Numerically solving the model, we find an interesting temperature dependence of the spectrum and the couplings. We also make a prediction on the finite temperature decay width of some nucleon and $Δ$ excited states.
