General-Purpose Speech Representation Learning through a Self-Supervised Multi-Granularity Framework

This paper presents a self-supervised learning framework, named MGF, for general-purpose speech representation learning. In the design of MGF, speech hierarchy is taken into consideration. Specifically, we propose to use generative learning approaches to capture fine-grained information at small time scales and use discriminative learning approaches to distill coarse-grained or semantic information at large time scales. For phoneme-scale learning, we borrow idea from the masked language model but tailor it for the continuous speech signal by replacing classification loss with a contrastive loss. We corroborate our design by evaluating MGF representation on various downstream tasks, including phoneme classification, speaker classification, speech recognition, and emotion classification. Experiments verify that training at different time scales needs different training targets and loss functions, which in general complement each other and lead to a better performance.

Beating the Standard Quantum Limit under Ambient Conditions with Solid-State Spins

Precision measurement plays a crucial role in all fields of science. The use of entangled sensors in quantum metrology improves the precision limit from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL). To date, most experiments beating the SQL are performed on the sensors which are well isolated under extreme conditions. However, it has not been realized in solid-state spin systems at ambient conditions, owing to its intrinsic complexity for the preparation and survival of pure and entangled quantum states. Here we show a full interferometer sequence beating the SQL by employing a hybrid multi-spin system, namely the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond. The interferometer sequence starts from a deterministic and joint initialization, undergoes entanglement and disentanglement of multiple spins, and ends up with projective measurement. In particular, the deterministic and joint initialization of NV negative state, NV electron spin, and two nuclear spins is realized at room temperature for the first time. By means of optimal control, non-local gates are implemented with an estimated fidelity above the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation. With these techniques combined, we achieve two-spin interference with a phase sensitivity of 1.79 \pm 0.06 dB beyond the SQL and three-spin 2.77 \pm 0.10 dB. Moreover, the deviations from the HL induced by experimental imperfections are completely accountable. The techniques used here are of fundamental importance for quantum sensing and computing, and naturally applicable to other solid-state spin systems.

A Flow Base Bi-path Network for Cross-scene Video Crowd Understanding in Aerial View

Drones shooting can be applied in dynamic traffic monitoring, object detecting and tracking, and other vision tasks. The variability of the shooting location adds some intractable challenges to these missions, such as varying scale, unstable exposure, and scene migration. In this paper, we strive to tackle the above challenges and automatically understand the crowd from the visual data collected from drones. First, to alleviate the background noise generated in cross-scene testing, a double-stream crowd counting model is proposed, which extracts optical flow and frame difference information as an additional branch. Besides, to improve the model's generalization ability at different scales and time, we randomly combine a variety of data transformation methods to simulate some unseen environments. To tackle the crowd density estimation problem under extreme dark environments, we introduce synthetic data generated by game Grand Theft Auto V(GTAV). Experiment results show the effectiveness of the virtual data. Our method wins the challenge with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 12.70. Moreover, a comprehensive ablation study is conducted to explore each component's contribution.

Experimental sensing quantum atmosphere of a single spin

Understanding symmetry-breaking states of materials is a major challenge in the modern physical sciences. Quantum atmosphere proposed recently sheds light on the hidden world of these symmetry broken patterns. But the requirements for exquisite sensitivity to the small shift and tremendous spatial resolution to local information pose huge obstacles to its experimental manifestation. In our experiment, we prepare time-reversal-symmetry conserved and broken quantum atmosphere of a single nuclear spin and successfully observe their symmetry properties. Our work proves in principle that finding symmetry patterns from quantum atmosphere is conceptually viable. It also opens up entirely new possibilities in the potential application of quantum sensing in material diagnosis.
