On the Classification of Topological Quandles

We investigate the classification of topological quandles on some simple manifolds. Precisely we classify all Alexander quandle structures, up to isomorphism, on the real line and the unit circle. For the closed unit interval $[0, 1]$, we conjecture that there exists only one topological quandle structure on it, i.e. the trivial one. Some evidences are provided to support our conjecture.

Rooted trees with the same plucking polynomial

In this paper we give a sufficient and necessary condition for two rooted trees with the same plucking polynomial. Furthermore, we give a criteria for a sequence of non-negative integers to be realized as a rooted tree.

The chord index, its definitions, applications and generalizations

In this paper we study the chord index of virtual knots, which can be thought of as an extension of the chord parity. We show how to use the chord index to define finite type invariants of virtual knots. The notions of indexed Jones polynomial and indexed quandle are introduced, which generalize the classical Jones polynomial and knot quandle respectively. Some applications of these new invariants are discussed. We also study how to define a generalized chord index via a fixed finite biquandle. Finally the chord index and its applications in twisted knot theory are discussed.

Strict unimodality of q-polynomials of rooted trees

We classify rooted trees which have strictly unimodal q-polynomials (plucking polynomial). We also give criteria for a trapezoidal shape of a plucking polynomial. We generalize results of Pak and Panova on strict unimodality of q-binomial coefficients. We discuss which polynomials can be realized as plucking polynomials and whether or not different rooted trees can have the same plucking polynomial.

A transcendental function invariant of virtual knots

In this work we describe a new invariant of virtual knots. We show that this transcendental function invariant generalizes several polynomial invariants of virtual knots, such as the writhe polynomial, the affine index polynomial and the zero polynomial.

On Marked Braid Groups

In the present paper, we introduce $\mathbb{Z}_2$-braids and, more generally, $G$-braids for an arbitrary group $G$. They form a natural group-theoretic counterpart of $G$-knots, see \cite{reidmoves}. The underlying idea, used in the construction of these objects --- decoration of crossings with some additional information --- generalizes an important notion of {\it parity} introduced by the second author (see \cite{parity}) to different combinatorically--geometric theories, such as knot theory, braid theory and others. These objects act as natural enhancements of classical (Artin) braid groups. The notion of dotted braid group is introduced: classical (Artin) braid groups live inside dotted braid groups as those elements having presentation with no dots on the strands. The paper is concluded by a list of unsolved problems.

Bowling ball representation of virtual string links

In this paper we investigate the virtual string links via a probabilistic interpretation. This representation can be used to distinguish some virtual string links from classical string links. In order to study the algebraic structure behind this probabilistic interpretation we introduce the notion of virtual flat biquandle. The cocycle invariants associated with virtual flat biquandle is discussed.

Positive quandle homology and its applications in knot theory

Algebraic homology and cohomology theories for quandles have been studied extensively in recent years. With a given quandle 2(3)-cocycle one can define a state-sum invariant for knotted curves(surfaces). In this paper we introduce another version of quandle (co)homology theory, say positive quandle (co)homology. Some properties of positive quandle (co)homology groups are given and some applications of positive quandle cohomology in knot theory are discussed.

Kauffman-Harary conjecture for alternating virtual knots

In 1999, Kauffman-Harary conjectured that every non-trivial Fox $p$-coloring of a reduced, alternating knot diagram with prime determinant $p$ is heterogeneous. Ten years later this conjecture was proved by W. Mattman and P. Solis. Mathew Williamson generalized this conjecture to alternating virtual knots and proved it for certain families of virtual knots. In the present note, we use the methods of W. Mattman and P. Solis to give an affirmative answer to the Kauffman-Harary conjecture for alternating virtual knots.

A polynomial invariant of virtual links

In this paper, we define some polynomial invariants for virtual knots and links. In the first part we use Manturov's parity axioms to obtain a new polynomial invariant of virtual knots. This invariant can be regarded as a generalization of the odd writhe polynomial defined by the first author. The relation between this new polynomial invariant and the affine index polynomial is discussed. In the second part we introduce a polynomial invariant for long flat virtual knots. In the third part we define a polynomial invariant for 2-component virtual links. This polynomial invariant can be regarded as a generalization of the linking number.

A polynomial invariant of virtual knots

The aim of this paper is to introduce a polynomial invariant $f_K(t)$ for virtual knots. We show that $f_K(t)$ can be used to distinguish some virtual knot from its inverse and mirror image. The behavior of $f_K(t)$ under connected sum is also given. Finally we discuss which kind of polynomial can be realized as $f_K(t)$ for some virtual knot $K$.

When is region crossing change an unknotting operation?

In this paper, we prove that region crossing change on a link diagram is an unknotting operation if and only if the link is proper. A description of the behavior of region crossing change on link diagrams is given. Furthermore we also discuss the relation between region crossing change and the Arf invariant of proper links.

On region crossing change and incidence matrix

In a recent work of Ayaka Shimizu$^{[5]}$, she defined an operation named region crossing change on link diagrams, and showed that region crossing change is an unknotting operation for knot diagrams. In this paper, we prove that region crossing change on a 2-component link diagram is an unknotting operation if and only if the linking number of the diagram is even. Besides, we define an incidence matrix of a link diagram via its signed planar graph and its dual graph. By studying the relation between region crossing change and incidence matrix, we prove that a signed planar graph represents an $n$-component link diagram if and only if the rank of the associated incidence matrix equals to $c-n+1$, here $c$ denotes the size of the graph.
