Model Hamiltonian for topological Kondo insulator SmB6

Starting from the kp method in combination with first-principles calculations, we systematically derive the effective Hamiltonians that capture the low energy band structures of recently discovered topological Kondo insulator SmB6. Using these effective Hamiltonians we can obtain both the energy dispersion and the spin texture of the topological surface states, which can be detected by further experiments.

Large linear magnetoresistance in Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 with Fermi surfaces close to the Dirac points

We have investigated the magnetoresistive behavior of Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 down to low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. A positive and linear magnetoresistance (LMR) as large as 3100% is observed in a magnetic field of 14 T, on high-quality single crystals of Cd3As2 with ultra-low electron density and large Lande g factor. Such a large LMR occurs when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to both the current and the (100) surface, and when the temperature is low such that the thermal energy is smaller than the Zeeman splitting energy. Tilting the magnetic field or raising the temperature all degrade the LMR, leading to a less pronounced quadratic behavior. We propose that the phenomenon of LMR is related to the peculiar field-induced shifting/distortion of the helical electrons' Fermi surfaces in momentum space.

Evidence of Topological Surface State in Three-Dimensional Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2

The three-dimensional topological semimetals represent a new quantum state of matter. Distinct from the surface state in the topological insulators that exhibits linear dispersion in two-dimensional momentum plane, the three-dimensional semimetals host bulk band dispersions linearly along all directions, forming discrete Dirac cones in three-dimensional momentum space. In addition to the gapless points (Weyl/Dirac nodes) in the bulk, the three-dimensional Weyl/Dirac semimetals are also characterized by "topologically protected" surface state with Fermi arcs on their specific surface. The Weyl/Dirac semimetals have attracted much attention recently they provide a venue not only to explore unique quantum phenomena but also to show potential applications. While Cd3As2 is proposed to be a viable candidate of a Dirac semimetal, more experimental evidence and theoretical investigation are necessary to pin down its nature. In particular, the topological surface state, the hallmark of the three-dimensional semimetal, has not been observed in Cd3As2. Here we report the electronic structure of Cd3As2 investigated by angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the (112) crystal surface and detailed band structure calculations. The measured Fermi surface and band structure show a good agreement with the band structure calculations with two bulk Dirac-like bands approaching the Fermi level and forming Dirac points near the Brillouin zone center. Moreover, the topological surface state with a linear dispersion approaching the Fermi level is identified for the first time. These results provide strong experimental evidence on the nature of topologically non-trivial three-dimensional Dirac cones in Cd3As2.

Time-reversal invariant topological superconductivity in doped Weyl semimetals

Time-reversal invariant topological superconductors are a new state of matter which have a bulk superconducting gap and robust Majorana fermion surface states. These have not yet been realized in solid state systems. In this paper, we propose that this state can be realized in doped Weyl semimetals or Weyl metals. The Fermi surfaces of a Weyl metal carry Chern numbers, which is a required ingredient for such a topological superconductor. By applying the fluctuation-exchange approach to a generic model of time-reversal invariant Dirac and Weyl semimetals, we investigate what microscopic interactions can supply the other ingredient, viz., sign changing of the superconducting gap function between Fermi surfaces with opposite Chern numbers. We find that if the normal state is inversion symmetric, onsite repulsive and exchange interactions induce various nodal phases as well as a small region of topological superconductivity on the phase diagram. Unlike the He$^{3}$B topological superconductor, the phase here does not rely on any special momentum dependence of the pairing amplitude. Breaking inversion symmetry precludes some of the nodal phases and the topological superconductor becomes much more prominent, especially at large ferromagnetic interaction. Our approach can be extended to generic Dirac or Weyl metals.

Three Dimensional Dirac Semimetal and Quantum Transports in Cd3As2

Based on the first-principles calculations, we recover the silent topological nature of Cd3As2, a well known semiconductor with high carrier mobility. We find that it is a symmetry-protected topological semimetal with a single pair of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac points in the bulk and non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces. It can be driven into a topological insulator and a Weyl semi-metal state by symmetry breaking, or into a quantum spin Hall insulator with gap more than 100meV by reducing dimensionality. We propose that the 3D Dirac cones in the bulk of Cd3As2 can support sizable linear quantum magnetoresistance even up to room temperature.

Transition-Metal Pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$: a Paradigm for Large-gap Quantum Spin Hall Insulators

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators, a new class of quantum matters, can support topologically protected helical edge modes inside bulk insulating gap, which can lead to dissipationless transport. A major obstacle to reach wide application of QSH is the lack of suitable QSH compounds, which should be easily fabricated and has large size of bulk gap. Here we predict that single layer ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$ are the most promising candidates to reach the large gap QSH insulators with bulk direct (indirect) band gap as large as 0.4 eV (0.1 eV), and robust against external strains. The 3D crystals of these two materials are good layered compounds with very weak inter-layer bonding and are located near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators, which pave a new way to future experimental studies on both QSH effect and topological phase transitions.

Topological Crystalline Kondo Insulator in Mixed Valence Ytterbium Borides

The electronic structures of two mixed valence insulators YbB$_6$ and YbB$_12$ are studied by using the local density approximation (LDA) supplemented with the Gutzwiller method and dynamic mean field theory (DMFT). YbB$_6$ is found to be a moderately correlated Z$_2$ topological insulator, similar to SmB$_6$ but having much larger bulk band gap. Notably, YbB$_12$ is revealed to be in a new novel quantum state, strongly correlated topological crystalline Kondo insulator, which is characterized by its non-zero mirror Chern number. The surface calculations find odd (three) and even (four) number of Dirac cones for YbB$_6$ and YbB$_12$, respectively.

Intermediate-pressure phases of cerium studied by an LDA + Gutzwiller method

The thermodynamic stable phase of cerium metal in the intermediate pressure regime (5.0--13.0 GPa) is studied in detail by the newly developed local-density approximation (LDA)+ Gutzwiller method, which can include the strong correlation effect among the 4\textit{f} electrons in cerium metal properly. Our numerical results show that the $α"$ phase, which has the distorted body-centered-tetragonal structure, is the thermodynamic stable phase in the intermediate pressure regime and all the other phases including the $α'$ phase ($α$-U structure), $α$ phase (fcc structure), and bct phases are either metastable or unstable. Our results are quite consistent with the most recent experimental data.

Correlated Topological Insulators with Mixed Valence

We propose the local density approximation (LDA)+Gutzwiller method incorporating Green's function scheme to study the topological physics of correlated materials from the first-principles. Applying this method to typical mixed valence materials SmB6, we found its non-trivial Z2 topology, indicating that SmB6 is a strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). The unique feature of this compound is that its surface states contain three Dirac cones in contrast to most known TIs.

Carrier-independent ferromagnetism and giant anomalous Hall effect in magnetic topological insulator

Breaking the time-reversal symmetry of a topological insulator (TI) by ferromagnetism can induce exotic magnetoelectric phenomena such as quantized anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. Experimental observation of QAH effect in a magnetically doped TI requires ferromagnetism not relying on the charge carriers. We have realized the ferromagnetism independent of both polarity and density of carriers in Cr-doped BixSb2-xTe3 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Meanwhile, the anomalous Hall effect is found significantly enhanced with decreasing carrier density, with the anomalous Hall angle reaching unusually large value 0.2 and the zero field Hall resistance reaching one quarter of the quantum resistance (h/e2), indicating the approaching of the QAH regime. The work paves the way to ultimately realize QAH effect and other unique magnetoelectric phenomena in TIs.

Dirac semimetal and topological phase transitions in A3Bi (A=Na, K, Rb)

The three-dimensional (3D) Dirac point, where two Weyl points overlap in momentum space, is usually unstable and hard to realize. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, that crystalline $A_3$Bi ($A$=Na, K, Rb) are Dirac semimetals with bulk 3D Dirac points protected by crystal symmetry. They possess non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces, and can be driven into various topologically distinct phases by explicit breaking of symmetries. Giant diamagnetism, linear quantum magnetoresistance, and quantum spin-Hall effect will be expected for such compounds.

Effect of Cleaving Temperature on the Surface and Bulk Fermi Surface of Sr2RuO4 Investigated by High Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements are carried out to systematically investigate the effect of cleaving temperature on the electronic structure and Fermi surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Different from previous reports that high cleaving temperature can suppress surface Fermi surface, we find that the surface Fermi surface remains obvious and strong in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ cleaved at high temperature, even at room temperature. This indicates that cleaving temperature is not a key effective factor in suppressing the surface bands. On the other hand, in the aged surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ that is cleaved and held for a long time, the bulk bands can be enhanced. We have also carried out laser ARPES measurements on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by using vacuum ultra-violet laser (photon energy at 6.994 eV) and found an obvious enhancement of bulk bands even for samples cleaved at low temperature. These information are important in realizing an effective approach in manipulating and detecting the surface and bulk electronic structure of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In particular, the enhancement of bulk sensitivity, together with its super-high instrumental resolution of VUV laser ARPES, will be advantageous in investigating fine electronic structure and superconducting properties of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in the future.

Unusual Fermi Surface Sheet-Dependent Band Splitting in Sr2RuO4 Revealed by High Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Sr2RuO4. We observe clearly two sets of Fermi surface sheets near the (π,0)-(0,π) line which are most likely attributed to the surface and bulk Fermi surface splitting of the βband. This is in strong contrast to the nearly null surface and bulk Fermi surface splitting of the αband although both have identical orbital components. Extensive band structure calculations are performed by considering various scenarios, including structural distortion, spin-orbit coupling and surface ferromagnetism. However, none of them can explain such a qualitative difference of the surface and bulk Fermi surface splitting between the αand βsheets. This unusual behavior points to an unknown order on the surface of Sr2RuO4 that remains to be uncovered. Its revelation will be important for studying and utilizing novel quantum phenomena associated with the surface of Sr2RuO4 as a result of its being a possible p-wave chiral superconductor and a topological superconductor.

Spin Conduction in Anisotropic 3-D Topological Insulators

When topological insulators possess rotational symmetry their spin lifetime is tied to the scattering time. We show that in anisotropic TIs this tie can be broken and the spin lifetime can be very large. Two different mechanisms can obtain spin conduction over long distances. The first is tuning the Hamiltonian to conserve a spin operator $\cos ϕ\, σ_x + \sin ϕ\, σ_y$, while the second is tuning the Fermi energy to be near a local extremum of the energy dispersion. Both mechanisms can produce persistent spin helices. We report spin lifetimes and spin diffusion equations.

Chern semi-metal and Quantized Anomalous Hall Effect in HgCr2Se4

In three dimensional (3D) momentum space of solid crystal, a topological phase boundary separating the Chern insulating layers from normal insulating layers may exist, where the gap must be closed, resulting in a "Chern semi-metal" state with topologically unavoidable band-crossings at fermi level. This state, if found to exist, is a condensed-matter realization of chiral fermions (or called Weyl fermions) in (3+1)D, and should exhibit remarkable features, like magnetic monopoles in the bulk and fermi arcs on the surface. Here we predict, based on first-principles calculations, that such novel quantum state can be realized in a known ferromagnetic compound HgCr2Se4, with a single pair of Weyl fermions separated in momentum space. The characteristic feature of this state in HgCr2Se4 is the presence of quantum Hall effect without external magnetic field in its quantum-well structure.

Implementation of LDA+DMFT with pseudo-potential-plane-wave method

In this paper, we propose an efficient implementation of combining Dynamical Mean field theory (DMFT) with electronic structure calculation based on the local density approximation (LDA). The pseudo-potential-plane-wave method is used in the LDA part, which makes it possible to be applied to large systems. The full loop self consistency of the charge density has been reached in our implementation which allows us to compute the total energy related properties. The procedure of LDA+DMFT is introduced in detail with a complete flow chart. We have also applied our code to study the electronic structure of several typical strong correlated materials, including Cerium, Americium and NiO. Our results fit quite well with both the experimental data and previous studies.

Half-metallic Surface States and Topological Superconductivity in NaCoO$_2$ from first principles

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict a half-metallic surface state in layered bulk insulator NaCoO2, with tunable surface hole concentration. The half-metallic surface has a single Fermi surface with a helical spin texture, similar to the surface state of topological insulators, but with the key difference of time-reversal symmetry breaking in the present case. We propose the realization of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions when the half-metallic surface states are in proximity contact with a conventional superconductor.

Topological Aspect and Quantum Magnetoresistance of $β$-Ag$_2$Te

To explain the unusual non-saturating linear magnetoresistance observed in silver chalcogenides, the quantum scenario has been proposed based on the assumption of gapless linear energy spectrum. Here we show, by first principles calculations, that $β$-Ag$_2$Te with distorted anti-fluorite structure is in fact a topological insulator with gapless Dirac-type surface states. The characteristic feature of this new binary topological insulator is the highly anisotropic Dirac cone, in contrast to known examples, such as Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The Fermi velocity varies an order of magnitude by rotating the crystal axis.
