Non-Hermitian skin effect and chiral damping in open quantum systems

One of the unique features of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is the non-Hermitian skin effect, namely that the eigenstates are exponentially localized at the boundary of the system. For open quantum systems, a short-time evolution can often be well described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, while long-time dynamics calls for the Lindblad master equations, in which the Liouvillian superoperators generate time evolution. In this Letter, we find that Liouvillian superoperators can exhibit the non-Hermitian skin effect, and uncover its unexpected physical consequences. It is shown that the non-Hermitian skin effect dramatically shapes the long-time dynamics, such that the damping in a class of open quantum systems is algebraic under periodic boundary condition but exponential under open boundary condition. Moreover, the non-Hermitian skin effect and non-Bloch bands cause a chiral damping with a sharp wavefront. These phenomena are beyond the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians; instead, they belong to the non-Hermitian physics of full-fledged open quantum dynamics.

Torsional refrigeration by twisted, coiled, and supercoiled fibers

Higher efficiency, lower cost refrigeration is needed for both large and small scale cooling. Refrigerators using entropy changes during cycles of stretching or hydrostatically compression of a solid are possible alternatives to the vapor-compression fridges found in homes. We show that high cooling results from twist changes for twisted, coiled, or supercoiled fibers, including those of natural rubber, NiTi, and polyethylene fishing line. By using opposite chiralities of twist and coiling, supercoiled natural rubber fibers and coiled fishing line fibers result that cool when stretched. A demonstrated twist-based device for cooling flowing water provides a high cooling energy and device efficiency. Theory describes the axial and spring index dependencies of twist-enhanced cooling and its origin in a phase transformation for polyethylene fibers.

Observation of non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence in quantum dynamics

Bulk-boundary correspondence, a central principle in topological matter relating bulk topological invariants to edge states, breaks down in a generic class of non-Hermitian systems that have so far eluded experimental effort. Here we theoretically predict and experimentally observe non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence, a fundamental generalization of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence, in discrete-time non-unitary quantum-walk dynamics of single photons. We experimentally demonstrate photon localizations near boundaries even in the absence of topological edge states, thus confirming the non-Hermitian skin effect. Facilitated by our experimental scheme of edge-state reconstruction, we directly measure topological edge states, which match excellently with non-Bloch topological invariants calculated from localized bulk-state wave functions. Our work unequivocally establishes the non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence as a general principle underlying non-Hermitian topological systems, and paves the way for a complete understanding of topological matter in open systems.

Direct measurement of the quantum state of photons in a cavity

We propose a scheme to measure the quantum state of photons in a cavity. The proposal is based on the concept of quantum weak values and applies equally well to both the solid-state circuit and atomic cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) systems. The proposed scheme allows us to access directly the superposition components in Fock state basis, rather than the Wigner function as usual in phase space. Moreover, the separate access feature held in the direct scheme does not require a global reconstruction for the quantum state, which provides a particular advantage beyond the conventional method of quantum state tomography.

Gradual partial-collapse theory for ideal nondemolition measurements of qubits in circuit QED

The conventional method of qubit measurements in circuit QED is employing the dispersive regime of qubit-cavity coupling, which results in an approximated scheme of quantum nondemolition (QND) readout. This scheme becomes problematic in the case of strong coupling and/or strong measurement drive, owing to the so-called Purcell effect. A recent proposal by virtue of longitudinal coupling suggests a new scheme to realize fast, high-fidelity, and {\it ideal QND} readout of qubit state. The aim of the present work is twofold: (i) In parallel to what has been done in the past years for the dispersive readout, we carry out the gradual partial-collapse theory for this recent scheme, in terms of both the quantum trajectory equation and quantum Bayesian approaches. The partial-collapse weak measurement theory is useful for such as the measurement-based feedback control and other quantum applications. (ii) In the physical aspect, we construct the joint qubit-plus-cavity entangled state under continuous measurement and present a comprehensive analysis for the quantum efficiency,qubit-state purity, and signal-to-noise ratio in the output currents. The combination of the joint state and the quantum Bayesian rule provides a generalized scheme of cavity reset associated with the longitudinal coupling, which can restore the qubit to a quantum pure state from entanglement with the cavity states, and thus benefits the successive partial-collapse measurements after qubit rotations.

Video Smoke Detection Based on Deep Saliency Network

Video smoke detection is a promising fire detection method especially in open or large spaces and outdoor environments. Traditional video smoke detection methods usually consist of candidate region extraction and classification, but lack powerful characterization for smoke. In this paper, we propose a novel video smoke detection method based on deep saliency network. Visual saliency detection aims to highlight the most important object regions in an image. The pixel-level and object-level salient convolutional neural networks are combined to extract the informative smoke saliency map. An end-to-end framework for salient smoke detection and existence prediction of smoke is proposed for application in video smoke detection. The deep feature map is combined with the saliency map to predict the existence of smoke in an image. Initial and augmented dataset are built to measure the performance of frameworks with different design strategies. Qualitative and quantitative analysis at frame-level and pixel-level demonstrate the excellent performance of the ultimate framework.

Non-Hermitian Chern bands

The relation between chiral edge modes and bulk Chern numbers of quantum Hall insulators is a paradigmatic example of bulk-boundary correspondence. We show that the chiral edge modes are not strictly tied to the Chern numbers defined by a non-Hermitian Bloch Hamiltonian. This breakdown of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence stems from the non-Bloch-wave behavior of eigenstates (non-Hermitian skin effect), which generates pronounced deviations of phase diagrams from the Bloch theory. We introduce non-Bloch Chern numbers that faithfully predict the numbers of chiral edge modes. The theory is backed up by the open-boundary energy spectra, dynamics, and phase diagram of representative lattice models. Our results highlight a unique feature of non-Hermitian bands and suggest a non-Bloch framework to characterize their topology.

Edge states and topological invariants of non-Hermitian systems

The bulk-boundary correspondence is among the central issues of non-Hermitian topological states. We show that a previously overlooked `non-Hermitian skin effect' necessitates redefinition of topological invariants in a generalized Brillouin zone. The resultant phase diagrams dramatically differ from the usual Bloch theory. Specifically, we obtain the phase diagram of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, whose topological zero modes are determined by the non-Bloch winding number instead of the Bloch-Hamiltonian-based topological number. Our work settles the issue of the breakdown of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence and introduces the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence.

Majorana corner modes in a high-temperature platform

We introduce two-dimensional topological insulators in proximity to high-temperature cuprate or iron-based superconductors as high-temperature platforms of Majorana Kramers pairs of zero modes. The proximity-induced pairing at the helical edge state of the topological insulator serves as a Dirac mass, whose sign changes at the sample corner because of the pairing symmetry of high-$T_c$ superconductors. This sign changing naturally creates at each corner a pair of Majorana zero modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. Conceptually, this is a topologically trivial superconductor-based approach for Majorana zero modes. We provide quantitative criteria and suggest candidate materials for this proposal.

CO (7-6), [CI] 370 micron and [NII] 205 micron Line Emission of the QSO BRI 1335-0417 at Redshift 4.407

We present the results from our Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging observations of the CO (7-6), [CI] 370 um (hereafter [CI]) and [NII] 205 um (hereafter [NI]I) lines and their underlying continuum emission of BRI 1335-0417, an infrared bright quasar at z = 4.407. At the achieved resolutions of 1.1" to 1.2" (or 7.5 to 8.2 kpc), the continuum at 205 and 372 um (rest-frame), the CO (7-6), and the [CI] emissions are at best barely resolved whereas the [NII] emission is well resolved with an ALMA beam de-convolved major axis of 1.3" (+/- 0.3") or 9 (+/-2) kpc. As a warm dense gas tracer, the CO (7-6) emission shows a more compact spatial distribution and a significantly higher peak velocity dispersion than the other two lines that probe lower density gas, a picture favoring a merger-triggered star formation (SF) scenario over an orderly rotating SF disk. The CO (7-6) data also indicate a possible QSO-driven gas outflow that reaches a maximum line-of-sight velocity of 500 to 600 km/s. The far-infrared (FIR) dust temperature (T_dust) of 41.5 K from a gray-body fit to the continuum agrees well with the average T_dust inferred from various line luminosity ratios. The resulting L_CO(7-6)/L_FIR luminosity ratio is consistent with that of local luminous infrared galaxies powered predominantly by SF. The CO(7-6) luminosity-inferred SF rate is 5.1 (+/-1.5) x 10^3 M_solar/yr . The system has an effective star-forming region of 1.7 (+1.7/-0.8) kpc in diameter and a molecular gas reservoir of ~5 x 10^{11} M_solar.

Chiral Landau levels in Weyl semimetal NbAs with multiple topological carriers

Recently, Weyl semimetals have been experimentally discovered in both inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal-symmetry-breaking crystals. The non-trivial topology in Weyl semimetals can manifest itself with exotic phenomena which have been extensively investigated by photoemission and transport measurements. Despite the numerous experimental efforts on Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly, the existence of unconventional zeroth Landau levels, as a unique hallmark of Weyl fermions which is highly related to chiral anomaly, remains elusive owing to the stringent experimental requirements. Here, we report the magneto-optical study of Landau quantization in Weyl semimetal NbAs. High magnetic fields drive the system towards the quantum limit which leads to the observation of zeroth chiral Landau levels in two inequivalent Weyl nodes. As compared to other Landau levels, the zeroth chiral Landau level exhibits a distinct linear dispersion in z momentum direction and allows the optical transitions without the limitation of zero z momentum or square root of magnetic field evolution. The magnetic field dependence of the zeroth Landau levels further verifies the predicted particle-hole asymmetry of the Weyl cones. Meanwhile, the optical transitions from the normal Landau levels exhibit the coexistence of multiple carriers including an unexpected massive Dirac fermion, pointing to a more complex topological nature in inversion-symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals. Our results provide insights into the Landau quantization of Weyl fermions and demonstrate an effective tool for studying complex topological systems.

Dynamic Output Feedback Guaranteed-Cost Synchronization for Multiagent Networks with Given Cost Budgets

The current paper addresses the distributed guaranteed-cost synchronization problems for general high-order linear multiagent networks. Existing works on the guaranteed-cost synchronization usually require all state information of neighboring agents and cannot give the cost budget previously. For both leaderless and leader-following interaction topologies, the current paper firstly proposes a dynamic output feedback synchronization protocol with guaranteed-cost constraints, which can realize the tradeoff design between the energy consumption and the synchronization regulation performance with the given cost budget. Then, according to different structure features of interaction topologies, leaderless and leader-following guaranteed-cost synchronization analysis and design criteria are presented, respectively, and an algorithm is proposed to deal with the impacts of nonlinear terms by using both synchronization analysis and design criteria. Especially, an explicit expression of the synchronization function is shown for leaderless cases, which is independent of protocol states and the given cost budget. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate theoretical results.

Topological invariants of Floquet systems: General formulation, special properties, and Floquet topological defects

Periodically driven (Floquet) systems have been under active theoretical and experimental investigations. This paper aims at a systematic study in the following aspects of Floquet systems: (i) A systematic formulation of topological invariants of Floquet systems based on the cooperation of topology and symmetries. Topological invariants are constructed for the ten symmetry classes in all spatial dimensions, for both homogeneous Floquet systems (Floquet topological insulators and superconductors) and Floquet topological defects. Meanwhile, useful representative Dirac Hamiltonians for all the symmetry classes are obtained and studied. (ii) A general theory of Floquet topological defects, based on the proposed topological invariants. (iii) Models and proposals of Floquet topological defects in low dimensions. Among other defect modes, we investigate Floquet Majorana zero modes and Majorana Pi modes in vortices of topologically trivial superconductors under a periodic drive. In addition, we clarified several notable issues about Floquet topological invariants. Among other issues, we prove the equivalence between the effective-Hamiltonian-based band topological invariants and the frequency-domain band topological invariants.

Floquet multi-Weyl points in crossing-nodal-line semimetals

Weyl points with monopole charge $\pm 1$ have been extensively studied, however, real materials of multi-Weyl points, whose monopole charges are higher than $1$, have yet to be found. In this Rapid Communication, we show that nodal-line semimetals with nontrivial line connectivity provide natural platforms for realizing Floquet multi-Weyl points. In particular, we show that driving crossing nodal lines by circularly polarized light generates double-Weyl points. Furthermore, we show that monopole combination and annihilation can be observed in crossing-nodal-line semimetals and nodal-chain semimetals. These proposals can be experimentally verified in pump-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Nodal-link semimetals

In topological semimetals, the valence band and conduction band meet at zero-dimensional nodal points or one-dimensional nodal rings, which are protected by band topology and symmetries. In this Rapid Communication, we introduce "nodal-link semimetals", which host linked nodal rings in the Brillouin zone. We put forward a general recipe based on the Hopf map for constructing models of nodal-link semimetal. The consequences of nodal ring linking in the Landau levels and Floquet properties are investigated.

Rgtsvm: Support Vector Machines on a GPU in R

Rgtsvm provides a fast and flexible support vector machine (SVM) implementation for the R language. The distinguishing feature of Rgtsvm is that support vector classification and support vector regression tasks are implemented on a graphical processing unit (GPU), allowing the libraries to scale to millions of examples with >100-fold improvement in performance over existing implementations. Nevertheless, Rgtsvm retains feature parity and has an interface that is compatible with the popular e1071 SVM package in R. Altogether, Rgtsvm enables large SVM models to be created by both experienced and novice practitioners.

Experimental discovery of nodal chains

Three-dimensional (3D) topological nodal points, such as Weyl and Dirac nodes have attracted wide-spread interest across multiple disciplines and diverse material systems. Unlike nodal points that contain little structural variations, nodal lines can have numerous topological configurations in the momentum space, forming nodal rings, nodal chains and potentially nodal links and nodal knots. However, nodal lines have much less development for the lack of ideal material platforms. In condensed matter for example, nodal lines are often fragile to spin-orbit-coupling, locating off the Fermi level, coexisting with energy-degenerate trivial bands and dispersing strongly in energy of the line degeneracy. Here, overcoming all above difficulties, we theoretically predict and experimentally observe nodal chains in a metallic-mesh photonic crystal having frequency-isolated linear bandtouching rings chained across the entire Brillouin zone (BZ). These nodal chains are protected by mirror symmetries and have a frequency variation less than 1%. We used angle-resolved transmission (ART) to probe the projected bulk dispersions and performed Fourier-transformed field scan (FTFS) to map out the surface dispersions, which is a quadratic touching between two drumhead surface bands. Our results established an ideal nodal-line material for further studies of topological line-degeneracies with nontrivial connectivities, as well as the consequent wave dynamics richer than 2D Dirac and 3D Weyl materials.

Topological defects in Floquet systems: Anomalous chiral modes and topological invariant

Backscattering-immune chiral modes arise along certain line defects in three-dimensional materials. In this paper, we study Floquet chiral modes along Floquet topological defects, namely, the defects come entirely from spatial modulations of periodic driving. We define a precise topological invariant that counts the number of Floquet chiral modes, which is expressed as an integral on a five-dimensional torus parameterized by $(k_x,k_y,k_z,θ,t)$. This work demonstrates the possibility of creating chiral modes in three-dimensional bulk materials by modulated driving. We hope that it will stimulate further studies of Floquet topological defects.
