Topological Hamiltonian as an Exact Tool for Topological Invariants

We propose the concept of `topological Hamiltonian' for topological insulators and superconductors in interacting systems. The eigenvalues of topological Hamiltonian are significantly different from the physical energy spectra, but we show that topological Hamiltonian contains the information of gapless surface states, therefore it is an exact tool for topological invariants.

Strongly Correlated Topological Superconductors and Topological Phase Transitions via Green's Function

We propose several topological order parameters expressed in terms of Green's function at zero frequency for topological superconductors, which generalizes the previous work for interacting insulators. The coefficient in topological field theory is expressed in terms of zero frequency Green's function. We also study topological phase transition beyond noninteracting limit in this zero frequency Green's function approach.

Equivalent topological invariants of topological insulators

A time-reversal invariant topological insulator can be generally defined by the effective topological field theory with a quantized θcoefficient, which can only take values of 0 or π. This theory is generally valid for an arbitrarily interacting system and the quantization of the θinvariant can be directly measured experimentally. Reduced to the case of a non-interacting system, the θinvariant can be expressed as an integral over the entire three dimensional Brillouin zone. Alternatively, non-interacting insulators can be classified by topological invariants defined over discrete time-reversal invariant momenta. In this paper, we show the complete equivalence between the integral and the discrete invariants of the topological insulator.

Simplified topological invariants for interacting insulators

We propose general topological order parameters for interacting insulators in terms of the Green's function at zero frequency. They provide an unified description of various interacting topological insulators including the quantum anomalous Hall insulators and the time reversal invariant insulators in four, three and two dimensions. Since only Green's function at zero frequency is used, these topological order parameters can be evaluated efficiently by most numerical and analytical algorithms for strongly interacting systems.

Topological invariants for interacting topological insulators with inversion symmetry

For interacting Z_2 topological insulators with inversion symmetry, we propose a simple topological invariant expressed in terms of the parity eigenvalues of the interacting Green's function at time-reversal invariant momenta. We derive this result from our previous formula involving the integral over the frequency-momenta space. This formula greatly simplifies the explicit calculation of Z_2 topological invariants in inversion symmetric insulators with strong interactions.

Unveiling the physical properties and kinematics of molecular gas in the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/9) through high resolution CO (J = 3-2) observations

We present a ~ 1" (100 pc) resolution 12CO (3-2) map of the nearby intermediate stage interacting galaxy pair NGC 4038/9 (the Antennae galaxies) obtained with the Submillimeter Array. We find that half the CO (3-2) emission originates in the overlap region where most of the tidally induced star formation had been previously found in shorter wavelength images, with the rest being centered on each of the nuclei. The gross distribution is consistent with lower resolution single dish images, but we show for the first time the detailed distribution of the warm and dense molecular gas across this galaxy pair at resolutions comparable to the size of a typical giant molecular complex. While we find that 58% (33/57) of the spatially resolved Giant Molecular Associations (GMAs; a few x 100 pc) are located in the overlap region, only \leqq 30% spatially coincides with the optically detected star clusters, suggesting that the bulk of the CO (3-2) emission traces the regions with very recent or near future star formation activity. The spatial distribution of the CO (3-2)/CO (1-0) integrated brightness temperature ratios mainly range between 0.3 and 0.8, which suggests that on average the CO (3-2) line in the Antennae is not completely thermalized and similar to the average values of nearby spirals. A higher ratio is seen in both nuclei and the southern complexes in the overlap region. Higher radiation field associated with intense star formation can account for the nucleus of NGC 4038 and the overlap region, but the nuclear region of NGC 4039 show relatively little star formation or AGN activities and cannot be easily explained. We show kinematical evidence that the high line ratio in NGC 4039 is possibly caused by gas inflow into the counter-rotating central disk.

Topological field theory and thermal responses of interacting topological superconductors

We investigate the three-dimensional, time-reversal invariant topological superconductors with generic interaction by their response to external fields. The first description is a gravitational topological field theory, which gives a $Z_2$ classification of topological superconductors, and predicts a half-quantized thermal Hall effect on the surface. The second description introduces an s-wave proximity pairing field on the surface, and the associated topological defects give an integer $Z$ classification of the topological superconductors.

Topological Order Parameters for Interacting Topological Insulators

We propose a topological order parameter for interacting topological insulators, expressed in terms of the full Green's functions of the interacting system. We show that it is exactly quantized for a time reversal invariant topological insulator, and it can be experimentally measured through the topological magneto-electric effect. This topological order parameter can be applied to both interacting and disordered systems, and used for determining their phase diagrams.

An exact spin liquid state on the kagome lattice with topological order

We find an exact spin liquid state without time reversal symmetry on the kagome lattice with odd number of electrons per unit cell and explicit wave functions for all eigenstates. We also obtain that all spin-spin correlations are zero except trivial cases. We then show that there are anyonic excitations in our model. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of ground state degeneracy and gapless edge states indicating nontrivial topological order in our model. We also label all eiginstates on torus by local and global string operators.

The Structure of Active Merger Remnant NGC 6240 from IRAC Observations

NGC 6240 is a rare object in the local universe: an active merger remnant viewed at the point of merging where two active galactic nuclei are visible. We present IRAC data of this object, providing high sensitivity maps of the stellar and PAH distribution in this complicated system. We use photometry to analyze the variation in these distributions with radius and provide an SED in the four IRAC bands: 3.6 microns, 4.5 microns, 5.8 microns and 8.0 microns. We fit the radial profiles of the 3.6 micron band to r^.25 and exponential profiles to evaluate the structure of the remnant. Finally, we compare the IRAC images with multi-wavelength data and examine how outflows in the X-ray, Halpha and CO correlate with 8 micron emission. The results support the general picture of NGC 6240 as a system experiencing a major merger and transitioning from a disk galaxy to a spheroid. The sensitivity of IRAC to low surface brightness mid-infrared features provides detailed information on the extended distributions of stars and dust in this rare system.

SMA Imaging of CO(3-2) Line and 860 micron Continuum of Arp 220 : Tracing the Spatial Distribution of Luminosity

We used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to image 860 micron continuum and CO(3-2) line emission in the ultraluminous merging galaxy Arp 220, achieving a resolution of 0.23" (80 pc) for the continuum and 0.33" (120 pc) for the line. The CO emission peaks around the two merger nuclei with a velocity signature of gas rotation around each nucleus, and is also detected in a kpc-size disk encompassing the binary nucleus. The dust continuum, in contrast, is mostly from the two nuclei. The beam-averaged brightness temperature of both line and continuum emission exceeds 50 K at and around the nuclei, revealing the presence of warm molecular gas and dust. The dust emission morphologically agrees with the distribution of radio supernova features in the east nucleus, as expected when a starburst heats the nucleus. In the brighter west nucleus, however, the submillimeter dust emission is more compact than the supernova distribution. The 860 micron core, after deconvolution, has a size of 50-80 pc, consistent with recent 1.3 mm observations, and a peak brightness temperature of (0.9-1.6)x10^2 K. Its bolometric luminosity is at least 2x10^{11} Lsun and could be ~10^{12} Lsun depending on source structure and 860 micron opacity, which we estimate to be of the order of tau_{860} ~ 1 (i.e., N_{H_2} ~ 10^{25} cm^{-2}). The starbursting west nuclear disk must have in its center a dust enshrouded AGN or a very young starburst equivalent to hundreds of super star clusters. Further spatial mapping of bolometric luminosity through submillimeter imaging is a promising way to identify the heavily obscured heating sources in Arp 220 and other luminous infrared galaxies.

Large Misalignment between Stellar Bar and Dust Pattern in NGC 3488 Revealed by Spitzer and SDSS

A large position angle misalignment between the stellar bar and the distribution of dust in the late-type barred spiral NGC 3488 was discovered, using mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope and optical images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The angle between the bar and dust patterns was measured to be 25+-2deg, larger than most of the misalignments found previously in barred systems based on Ha or HI/CO observations. The stellar bar is bright at optical and 3.6um, while the dust pattern is more prominent in the 8um band but also shows up in the SDSS u and g-band images, suggesting a rich interstellar medium environment harboring ongoing star formation. This angular misalignment is unlikely to have been caused by spontaneous bar formation. We suggest that the stellar bar and the dust pattern may have different formation histories, and that the large misalignment was triggered by a tidal interaction with a small companion. A statistical analysis of a large sample of nearby galaxies with archival Spitzer data indicates that bar structure such as that seen in NGC 3488 is quite rare in the local Universe.

Subarcsecond Resolution Mid-Infrared Observations of Super Star Clusters in the Antennae (NGC4038/4039)

In this letter we present ground-based subarcsecond mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of young super star clusters in the overlap region of the merging galaxies NGC4038/4039 (the Antennae) obtained with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid-Infrared (VISIR). With its unprecedented spatial resolution VISIR begins to resolve the HII/PDR complexes around the star-forming regions for the first time. In the N-band spectra of two young star clusters unexpectedly low polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission is observed, compared to what is seen with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We conclude that a large fraction of the PAH emission cannot directly be associated with the super star clusters, but originate from an extended region of at least 215 pc radius around the clusters. In the distribution of [NeII] 12.81 micron emission a highly obscured cluster is discovered that does not have an optical or near-infrared counterpart.

Warm molecular gas in galaxy-galaxy merger NGC6090

We present observations of the CO 2-1 and 3-2 transitions toward the merging galaxies of NGC6090 with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) (The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is a joint project between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and is funded by the Smithsonian Institution and the Academia Sinica.). The high resolution CO data reveal three gas concentrations. The main component is peaking in the overlap region between the two galaxies, where the near-IR a nd radio continuum emission are weak. The CO 2-1 emission from the face-on galaxy NGC6090E is somewhat stronger than that from the edge-o n galaxy NGC6090W. The CO 3-2 emission peaks in the overlap region, similar to the CO 2-1 emission . More than 50% of the CO 3-2 emission arises from the 2$''$ (1.2 kpc) area of the overlap region. There appears to be CO 3-2 emission toward the nuclear region and the north-west arm of NGC6090E, while no CO 3-2 emission is detected toward NGC6090W. Unlike the CO gas, most of the radio continuum emission comes from NGC6090E. The strong CO emission, together with the weak radio continuum emission, suggests that star formation in the overlap region has not proceeded long enoug h to produce significant numbers of supernovae which would be detectable due to their radio continuum emission.
