Noncollinear antiferromagnetic structure and physical properties of CrRhAs with distorted kagome lattice

CrRhAs was theoretically proposed to be a kagome metal with unusual magnetic ground states; however, little is known about its magnetic structure and physical properties experimentally. Here, we present an experimental investigation of CrRhAs with ZrNiAl-type structure and a distorted Cr kagome lattice. CrRhAs is an antiferromagnet with TN = 149 K. Powder neutron diffraction analysis reveals a noncollinear antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector k = (1/3, 1/3, 1/2), which features a ferromagnetic second nearest neighbor coupling in the kagome plane that is different from the prediction in previous density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, CrRhAs exhibits anomalous electrical transport properties which are possibly related to multiband effects and strong spin fluctuations. For the temperature-dependent longitudinal resistivity \r{ho}xx, it is semiconductinglike above TN and becomes metallic below TN . The Hall coefficients exhibit two sign changes near 70 and 300 K. Combined with the results of heat capacity measurements, a large Kadowaki-Woods ratio α = 33.9 μΩ cm mol2 K2/J2 is obtained. The above results suggest CrRhAs is a strongly correlated kagome metal with multiband and noncollinear magnetic structure features.

Spin-supersolidity induced quantum criticality and magnetocaloric effect in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$

We performed high-field magnetization, magnetocaloric effect (MCE), and NMR measurements on the Ising triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$. The observations of the 1/3-magnetization plateau, the split NMR lines, and the thermal activation behaviors of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ between 2 T and 15.8 T provide unambiguous evidence of a gapped up-up-down (UUD) magnetic ordered phase. For fields between 15.8 T and 18.5 T, the anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility, the slow saturation of the NMR line spectral ratio with temperature, and the power-law temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ suggest the ground state to be a spin supersolid with gapless spin excitations. With further increasing the field, the Grüneisen ratio, extracted from the MCE data, reveals a continuous quantum phase transition at $H_{\rm C}\approx$ 19.5 T and a universal quantum critical scaling with the exponents $νz~\approx~$1. Near $H_{\rm C}$, the large high-temperature MCE signal and the broad peaks in the NMR Knight shift and $1/T_1$, manifest the strong spin fluctuations driven by both magnetic frustration and quantum criticality. These results establish Rb$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$ as a candidate platform for cryogenic magnetocaloric cooling.

Structural and magnetic characterization of CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ and YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with two-dimensional pseudospin-1/2 triangular lattice

Triangular lattice antiferromagnets are prototypes for frustrated magnetism and may potentially realize novel quantum magnetic states such as a quantum spin liquid ground state. A recent work suggests NdTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with rare-earth triangular lattice is a quantum spin liquid candidate and highlights the large family of rare-earth heptatantalates as a framework for quantum magnetism investigation. In this paper, we report the structural and magnetic characterization of CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ and YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$. Both compounds are isostructural to NdTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with no detectable structural disorder. For CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$, the crystal field energy levels and parameters are determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Based on the crystal field result, the magnetic susceptibility data could be well fitted and explained, which reveals that CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ is a highly anisotropic Ising triangular-lattice antiferromagnet ($g_z$/$g_{xy}$$\sim$3) with very weak exchange interaction (J$\sim$0.22~K). For YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$, millimeter sized single crystals could be grown. The anisotropic magnetization and electron spin resonance data show that YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$ has a contrasting in-plane magnetic anisotropy with $g_z$/$g_{xy}$$\sim$0.67 similar as that of YbMgGaO$_4$. The above results indicate that CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ and YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with pseudospin-1/2 ground states might either be quantum spin liquid candidate materials or find applications in adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration due to the weak exchange interaction.
