Local Knots, $ν^+$-Sharp Knots, and Rational Slice Genus

Hom and Wu introduced the knot concordance invariant $ν^{+}$ for knots in $S^{3}$ and proved that it gives a lower bound for the slice genus. Wu and Yang extended $ν^{+}$ to knots in rational homology $3$-spheres, where it gives a lower bound for the rational slice genus, an analogue of the slice genus for knots in rational homology $3$-spheres. We call a knot $ν^{+}$-sharp if this bound is realized as an equality. An open question asks whether a local knot in a $3$-manifold $Y$, that is, a knot contained in a $3$-ball, can bound a surface of smaller genus in $Y\times I$ than in $S^{3}\times I$. Using the Heegaard Floer invariant $ν^+$, we show that this does not occur for local knots arising from $ν^+$-sharp knots: if $K\subset S^3$ is $ν^+$-sharp and $Y$ is a rational homology $3$-sphere, then the induced local knot in $Y$ has rational slice genus equal to the slice genus of $K$. The proof proceeds by establishing an additivity result for the rational slice genus.

A multi-variable Alexander polynomial for a framed transverse graph

We propose a definition of the rotation number for transverse graph diagrams, extending the classical notion of the rotation number for plane curves. Using this, we introduce a normalized multi-variable Alexander polynomial for framed, oriented transverse graphs without sinks or sources, embedded in the 3-sphere $S^3$. We prove that our invariant coincides with the $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(1\vert 1))$-Alexander polynomial proposed by Viro.

Surgeries between lens spaces of type $L(n,1)$ and the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariant

We establish a $d$-invariant surgery formula for $L$-space knots that provides an effective tool for studying surgeries between lens spaces. Using this formula, we classify distance one surgeries between lens spaces of the form $L(n,1)$. This classification has direct applications to band surgeries between torus links $T(2,n)$, with connections to DNA topology. In particular, we show that chirally cosmetic banding of torus links can possibly occur only when $n=1,5,9$ or $10$.

Nonexistence and existence of fillable contact structures on 3-manifolds

In the first part of this paper, we construct infinitely many hyperbolic closed 3-manifolds which admit no symplectic fillable contact structure. All these 3-manifolds are obtained by Dehn surgeries along L-space knots or L-space two-component links. In the second part of this paper, we show that Dehn surgeries along certain knots and links, including those considered in the first part, admit Stein fillable contact structures as long as the surgery coefficients are sufficiently large. This provides some new evidence for the high surgery conjecture raised by Stipsicz.

Clock Moves and Alexander Polynomial of Plane Graphs

In this paper, we introduce a notion of clock moves for spanning trees in plane graphs. This enables us to develop a spanning tree model of an Alexander polynomial for a plane graph and prove the unimodal property of its associate coefficient sequence. In particular, this confirms the trapezoidal conjecture for planar singular knots and gives new insights to Fox's original conjecture on alternating knots.

A note on rational band moves

We introduce an oriented rational band move, a generalization of an ordinary oriented band move, and show that if a knot $K$ in the three-sphere can be made into the $(n+1)$-component unlink by $n$ oriented rational band moves, then $K$ is rationally slice.

Rational genus and Heegaard Floer homology

Turaev defined a function on the first homology of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ as the minimal rational Seifert genus of all knots in this homology class. Ni and the first author discovered a lower bound of this function using the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariant and showed that Floer simple knots are rational Seifert genus minimizers. In this paper, we give a simple reproof of the above results. We then define a version of rational slice genus for knots in the product 4-manifold $Y\times I$ and investigate the analogous minimal genus problem. We prove the same lower bound in terms of the $d$-invariant formula and the same genus minimizers given by Floer simple knots.

Studies of distance one surgeries on the lens space $L(p,1)$

In this paper, we study distance one surgeries between lens spaces $L(p,1)$ with $p \geq 5$ prime and lens spaces $L(n,1)$ for $n \in \mathbb{Z}$ and band surgeries from $T(2,p)$ to $T(2,n)$. In particular, we prove that $L(n,1)$ is obtained by a distance one surgery from $L(5,1)$ only if $n=\pm 1$, $4$, $\pm 5$, $6$ or $\pm 9$, and $L(n,1)$ is obtained by a distance one surgery from $L(7,1)$ if and only if $n=\pm 1$, $3$, $6$, $7$, $8$ or $11$.

Contact (+1)-surgeries on rational homology 3-spheres

In this paper, sufficient conditions for contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian knots in contact rational homology 3-spheres to have vanishing contact invariants or to be overtwisted are given. They can be applied to study contact $(\pm1)$-surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. We also obtain a sufficient condition for contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links in the standard contact 3-sphere to be overtwisted via their front projections.

Alexander polynomial and spanning trees

Inspired by the combinatorial constructions in earlier work of the authors that generalized the classical Alexander polynomial to a large class of spatial graphs with a balanced weight on edges, we show that the value of the Alexander polynomial evaluated at $t=1$ gives the weighted number of the spanning trees of the graph.

An Alexander polynomial for MOY graphs

We introduce an Alexander polynomial for MOY graphs. For a framed trivalent MOY graph $\mathbb{G}$, we refine the construction and obtain a framed ambient isotopy invariant $Δ_{(\mathbb{G},c)}(t)$. The invariant $Δ_{(\mathbb{G}, c)}(t)$ satisfies a series of relations, which we call MOY-type relations, and conversely these relations determine $Δ_{(\mathbb{G}, c)}(t)$. Using them we provide a graphical definition of the Alexander polynomial of a link. Finally, we discuss some properties and applications of our invariants.

Contact (+1)-surgeries along Legendrian Two-component Links

In this paper, we study contact surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. On one hand, we use algebraic methods to prove the vanishing of the contact Ozsváth-Szabó invariant for contact $(+1)$-surgery along certain Legendrian two-component links. The main tool is a link surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology developed by Manolescu and Ozsváth. On the other hand, we use contact-geometric argument to show the overtwistedness of the contact 3-manifolds obtained by contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links whose two components are linked in some special configurations.

A bound for rational Thurston-Bennequin invariants

In this paper, we introduce a rational $τ$ invariant for rationally null-homologous knots in contact 3-manifolds with nontrivial Ozsváth-Szabó contact invariants. Such an invariant is an upper bound for the sum of rational Thurston-Bennequin invariant and the rational rotation number of the Legendrian representatives of the knot. In the special case of Floer simple knots in L-spaces, we can compute the rational $τ$ invariants by correction terms.

A note on Jones polynomial and cosmetic surgery

We show that two Dehn surgeries on a knot $K$ never yield manifolds that are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds if $V_K''(1)\neq 0$ or $V_K'''(1)\neq 0$. As an application, we verify the cosmetic surgery conjecture for all knots with no more than $11$ crossings except for three $10$-crossing knots and five $11$-crossing knots. We also compute the finite type invariant of order $3$ for two-bridge knots and Whitehead doubles, from which we prove several nonexistence results of purely cosmetic surgery.

A cabling formula for $ν^+$ invariant

We prove a cabling formula for the concordance invariant $ν^+$, defined by the author and Hom. This gives rise to a simple and effective 4-ball genus bound for many cable knots.

Correction terms, $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm, and triangulations

We show that the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology give a lower bound to the the genus of one-sided Heegaard splittings and the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm. Using a result of Jaco--Rubinstein--Tillmann, this gives a lower bound to the complexity of certain closed $3$--manifolds. As an application, we compute the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm of the double branched cover of some closed 3--braids, and give upper and lower bounds for the complexity of these manifolds.

Heegaard Floer correction terms and rational genus bounds

Given an element in the first homology of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$, one can consider the minimal rational genus of all knots in this homology class. This defines a function $Θ$ on $H_1(Y;\mathbb Z)$, which was introduced by Turaev as an analogue of Thurston norm. We will give a lower bound for this function using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology. As a corollary, we show that Floer simple knots in L-spaces are genus minimizers in their homology classes, hence answer questions of Turaev and Rasmussen about genus minimizers in lens spaces.
