Age of Information Aided Intelligent Grant-Free Massive Access for Heterogeneous mMTC Traffic

With the arrival of 6G, the Internet of Things (IoT) traffic is becoming more and more complex and diverse. To meet the diverse service requirements of IoT devices, massive machine-type communications (mMTC) becomes a typical scenario, and more recently, grant-free random access (GF-RA) presents a promising direction due to its low signaling overhead. However, existing GF-RA research primarily focuses on improving the accuracy of user detection and data recovery, without considering the heterogeneity of traffic. In this paper, we investigate a non-orthogonal GF-RA scenario where two distinct types of traffic coexist: event-triggered traffic with alarm devices (ADs), and status update traffic with monitor devices (MDs). The goal is to simultaneously achieve high detection success rates for ADs and high information timeliness for MDs. First, we analyze the age-based random access scheme and optimize the access parameters to minimize the average age of information (AoI) of MDs. Then, we design an age-based prior information aided autoencoder (A-PIAAE) to jointly detect active devices, together with learned pilots used in GF-RA to reduce interference between non-orthogonal pilots. In the decoder, an Age-based Learned Iterative Shrinkage Thresholding Algorithm (LISTA-AGE) utilizing the AoI of MDs as the prior information is proposed to enhance active user detection. Theoretical analysis is provided to demonstrate the proposed A-PIAAE has better convergence performance. Experiments demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in reducing the average AoI of MDs and improving the successful detection rate of ADs.

Beamforming Design for IRS-and-UAV-Aided Two-Way Amplify-and-Forward Relay Networks in Maritime IoT

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-and-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network in maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is proposed, where ship1 ($\text{S}_1$) and ship2 ($\text{S}_2$) can be viewed as data collecting centers. To enhance the message exchange rate between $\text{S}_1$ and $\text{S}_2$, a problem of maximizing minimum rate is cast, where the variables, namely AF relay beamforming matrix and IRS phase shifts of two time slots, need to be optimized. To achieve a maximum rate, a low-complexity alternately iterative (AI) scheme based on zero forcing and successive convex approximation (LC-ZF-SCA) algorithm is presented. To obtain a significant rate enhancement, a high-performance AI method based on one step, semidefinite programming and penalty SCA (ONS-SDP-PSCA) is proposed. Simulation results show that by the proposed LC-ZF-SCA and ONS-SDP-PSCA methods, the rate of the IRS-and-UAV-assisted AF relay network surpass those of with random phase and only AF relay networks. Moreover, ONS-SDP-PSCA perform better than LC-ZF-SCA in aspect of rate.

Two Rapid Power Iterative DOA Estimators for UAV Emitter Using Massive/Ultra-massive Receive Array

To provide rapid direction finding (DF) for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) emitter in future wireless networks, a low-complexity direction of arrival (DOA) estimation architecture for massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) receiver arrays is constructed. In this paper, we propose two strategies to address the extremely high complexity caused by eigenvalue decomposition of the received signal covariance matrix. Firstly, a rapid power-iterative rotational invariance (RPI-RI) method is proposed, which adopts the signal subspace generated by power iteration to gets the final direction estimation through rotational invariance between subarrays. RPI-RI makes a significant complexity reduction at the cost of a substantial performance loss. In order to further reduce the complexity and provide a good directional measurement result, a rapid power-iterative Polynomial rooting (RPI-PR) method is proposed, which utilizes the noise subspace combined with polynomial solution method to get the optimal direction estimation. In addition, the influence of initial vector selection on convergence in the power iteration is analyzed, especially when the initial vector is orthogonal to the incident wave. Simulation results show that the two proposed methods outperform the conventional DOA estimation methods in terms of computational complexity. In particular, the RPIPR method achieves more than two orders of magnitude lower complexity than conventional methods and achieves performance close to CRLB. Moreover, it is verified that the initial vector and the relative error have a significant impact on the performance of the computational complexity.

Phase Optimization for Massive IRS-aided Two-way Relay Network

In this paper, with the help of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), the source (S) and destination (D) exchange information through the two-way decode-and-forward relay (TW-DFR). We mainly focus on the phase optimization of IRS to improve the system rate performance. Firstly, a maximizing receive power sum (Max-RPS) method is proposed via eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) with an appreciable rate enhancement, which is called Max-RPS-EVD. To further achieve a higher rate, a method of maximizing minimum rate (Max-Min-R) is proposed with high complexity. To reduce its complexity, a low-complexity method of maximizing the sum rate (Max-SR) via general power iterative (GPI) is proposed, which is called Max-SR-GPI. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods outperform the case of random phase method, especially the proposed Max-SR-GPI method is the best one achieving at least 20\% rate gain over random phase. Additionally, it is also proved the optimal rate can be achieved when TW-DFR and IRS are located in the middle of S and D.

Performance Analysis of Wireless Network Aided by Discrete-Phase-Shifter IRS

Discrete phase shifters of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) generates phase quantization error (QE) and degrades the receive performance at the receiver. To make an analysis of the performance loss caused by IRS with phase QE, based on the law of large numbers, the closed-form expressions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance loss (PL), achievable rate (AR), and bit error rate (BER) are successively derived under line-of-sight (LoS) channels and Rayleigh channels. Moreover, based on the Taylor series expansion, the approximate simple closed form of PL of IRS with approximate QE is also given. The simulation results show that the performance losses of SNR and AR decrease as the number of quantization bits increase, while they gradually increase with the number of IRS phase shifter elements increase. Regardless of LoS channels or Rayleigh channels, when the number of quantization bits is larger than or equal to 3, the performance losses of SNR and AR are less than 0.23dB and 0.08bits/s/Hz, respectively, and the BER performance degradation is trivial. In particular, the performance loss difference between IRS with QE and IRS with approximate QE is negligible when the number of quantization bits is not less than 2.

Pilot Optimization and Channel Estimation for Two-way Relaying Network Aided by IRS with Finite Discrete Phase Shifters

In this paper, we investigate the problem of pilot optimization and channel estimation of two-way relaying network (TWRN) aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with finite discrete phase shifters. In a TWRN, there exists a challenging problem that the two cascading channels from source-to-IRS-to-Relay and destination-to-IRS-to-relay interfere with each other. Via designing the initial phase shifts of IRS and pilot pattern, the two cascading channels are separated by using simple arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction. Then, the least-squares estimator is adopted to estimate the two cascading channels and two direct channels from source to relay and destination to relay. The corresponding mean square errors (MSE) of channel estimators are derived. By minimizing MSE, the optimal phase shift matrix of IRS is proved. Then, two special matrices Hadamard and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix is shown to be two optimal training matrices for IRS. Furthermore, the IRS with discrete finite phase shifters is taken into account. Using theoretical derivation and numerical simulations, we find that 3-4 bits phase shifters are sufficient for IRS to achieve a negligible MSE performance loss. More importantly, the Hadamard matrix requires only one-bit phase shifters to achieve the optimal MSE performance while the DFT matrix requires at least three or four bits to achieve the same performance. Thus, the Hadamard matrix is a perfect choice for channel estimation using low-resolution phase-shifting IRS.
