Multi-dimensional Parameter Estimation in RIS-aided MU-MIMO-OFDM Channels

We address the channel estimation (CE) problem in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems by proposing a dual-structure and multi-dimensional transformations (DS-MDT) algorithm. The proposed approach leverages the dual-structure features of the channel parameters to assist users experiencing weaker channel conditions, thereby enhancing CE performance. Moreover, given that the channel parameters are distributed across multiple dimensions of the received tensor, the proposed algorithm employs multi-dimensional transformations to isolate and extract distinct parameters. The numerical results demonstrate the proposed algorithm reduces the normalized mean square error (NMSE) by up to 10 dB while maintaining lower complexity compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Neural Network-Assisted Hybrid Model Based Message Passing for Parametric Holographic MIMO Near Field Channel Estimation

Holographic multiple-input and multiple-output (HMIMO) is a promising technology with the potential to achieve high energy and spectral efficiencies, enhance system capacity and diversity, etc. In this work, we address the challenge of HMIMO near field (NF) channel estimation, which is complicated by the intricate model introduced by the dyadic Green's function. Despite its complexity, the channel model is governed by a limited set of parameters. This makes parametric channel estimation highly attractive, offering substantial performance enhancements and enabling the extraction of valuable sensing parameters, such as user locations, which are particularly beneficial in mobile networks. However, the relationship between these parameters and channel gains is nonlinear and compounded by integration, making the estimation a formidable task. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel neural network (NN) assisted hybrid method. With the assistance of NNs, we first develop a novel hybrid channel model with a significantly simplified expression compared to the original one, thereby enabling parametric channel estimation. Using the readily available training data derived from the original channel model, the NNs in the hybrid channel model can be effectively trained offline. Then, building upon this hybrid channel model, we formulate the parametric channel estimation problem with a probabilistic framework and design a factor graph representation for Bayesian estimation. Leveraging the factor graph representation and unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop an effective message passing-based Bayesian channel estimation algorithm. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Iterative Equalization of CPM With Unitary Approximate Message Passing

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) has extensive applications in wireless communications due to its high spectral and power efficiency. However, its nonlinear characteristics pose significant challenges for detection in frequency selective fading channels. This paper proposes an iterative receiver tailored for the detection of CPM signals over frequency selective fading channels. This design leverages the factor graph framework to integrate equalization, demodulation, and decoding functions. The equalizer employs the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP) algorithm, while the unitary transformation is implemented using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) with the aid of a cyclic prefix (CP), thereby achieving low computational complexity while with high performance. For CPM demodulation and channel decoding, with belief propagation (BP), we design a message passing-based maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm, and the message exchange between the demodulator, decoder and equalizer is elaborated. With proper message passing schedules, the receiver can achieve fast convergence. Simulation results show that compared with existing turbo receivers, the proposed receiver delivers significant performance enhancement with low computational complexity.

Grant Free MIMO-NOMA with Differential Modulation for Machine Type Communications

This paper considers a challenging scenario of machine type communications, where we assume internet of things (IoT) devices send short packets sporadically to an access point (AP) and the devices are not synchronized in the packet level. High transmission efficiency and low latency are concerned. Motivated by the great potential of multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) in massive access, we design a grant-free MIMO-NOMA scheme, and in particular differential modulation is used so that expensive channel estimation at the receiver (AP) can be bypassed. The receiver at AP needs to carry out active device detection and multi-device data detection. The active user detection is formulated as the estimation of the common support of sparse signals, and a message passing based sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm is designed to solve the problem. Due to the use of differential modulation, we investigate the problem of non-coherent multi-device data detection, and develop a message passing based Bayesian data detector, where the constraint of differential modulation is exploited to drastically improve the detection performance, compared to the conventional non-coherent detection scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed active device detector and non-coherent multi-device data detector.

Joint Near Field Uplink Communication and Localization Using Message Passing-Based Sparse Bayesian Learning

This work deals with the problem of uplink communication and localization in an integrated sensing and communication system, where users are in the near field (NF) of antenna aperture due to the use of high carrier frequency and large antenna arrays at base stations. We formulate joint NF signal detection and localization as a problem of recovering signals with a sparse pattern. To solve the problem, we develop a message passing based sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm, where multiple unitary approximate message passing (UAMP)-based sparse signal estimators work jointly to recover the sparse signals with low complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Hybrid Message Passing-Based Detectors for Uplink Grant-Free NOMA Systems

This paper studies improving the detector performance which considers the activity state (AS) temporal correlation of the user equipments (UEs) in the time domain under the uplink grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) system. The Bernoulli Gaussian-Markov chain (BG-MC) probability model is used for exploiting both the sparsity and slow change characteristic of the AS of the UE. The GAMP Bernoulli Gaussian-Markov chain (GAMP-BG-MC) algorithm is proposed to improve the detector performance, which can utilize the bidirectional message passing between the neighboring time slots to fully exploit the temporally-correlated AS of the UE. Furthermore, the parameters of the BG-MC model can be updated adaptively during the estimation procedure with unknown system statistics. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the detection accuracy compared with the existing methods while keeping the same order complexity.

Hierarchically Structured Matrix Recovery-Based Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technology for improving capacity and extending coverage of wireless networks. In this work, we consider RIS-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communications, where acquiring accurate channel state information is challenging due to the high dimensionality of channels. To fully exploit the structures of the channels, we formulate the channel estimation as a hierarchically structured matrix recovery problem, and design a low-complexity message passing algorithm to solve it. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm and its performance close to the oracle bound.

Matrix Factorization Based Blind Bayesian Receiver for Grant-Free Random Access in mmWave MIMO mMTC

Grant-free random access is promising for massive connectivity with sporadic transmissions in massive machine type communications (mMTC), where the hand-shaking between the access point (AP) and users is skipped, leading to high access efficiency. In grant-free random access, the AP needs to identify the active users and perform channel estimation and signal detection. Conventionally, pilot signals are required for the AP to achieve user activity detection and channel estimation before active user signal detection, which may still result in substantial overhead and latency. In this paper, to further reduce the overhead and latency, we explore the problem of grant-free random access without the use of pilot signals in a millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) system, where the AP performs blind joint user activity detection, channel estimation and signal detection (UACESD). We show that the blind joint UACESD can be formulated as a constrained composite matrix factorization problem, which can be solved by exploiting the structures of the channel matrix and signal matrix. Leveraging our recently developed unitary approximate message passing based matrix factorization (UAMP-MF) algorithm, we design a message passing based Bayesian algorithm to solve the blind joint UACESD problem. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the blind grant-free random access scheme.

Hybrid Message Passing Algorithm for Downlink FDD Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation

The design of message passing (MP) algorithms on factor graphs is an effective manner to implement channel estimation (CE) in wireless communication systems, which performance can be further improved by exploiting prior probability models that accurately match the channel characteristics. In this work, we study the CE problem in a downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. As the prior probability, we propose the Markov chain two-state Gaussian mixture with large variance differences (TSGM-LVD) model to exploit the structured sparsity in the angle-frequency domain of the channel. Existing single and combined MP rules cannot deal with the message computation of the proposed probability model. To overcome this issue, we present a general method to derive the hybrid message passing (HMP) rule, which allows the calculation of messages described by mixed linear and non-linear functions. Accordingly, we design the HMP-TSGM-LVD algorithm under the structured turbo framework (STF). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm converges faster and obtains better and more stable performance than its counterparts. In particular, the gain of the proposed approach is maximum (3 dB) in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime, while benchmark approaches experience oscillating behavior due to the improper prior model characterization.

Efficient Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided MIMO Communications with Unitary Approximate Message Passing

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is very promising for wireless networks to achieve high energy efficiency, extended coverage, improved capacity, massive connectivity, etc. To unleash the full potentials of RIS-aided communications, acquiring accurate channel state information is crucial, which however is very challenging. For RIS-aided multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communications, the existing channel estimation methods have computational complexity growing rapidly with the number of RIS units $N$ (e.g., in the order of $N^2$ or $N^3$) and/or have special requirements on the matrices involved (e.g., the matrices need to be sparse for algorithm convergence to achieve satisfactory performance), which hinder their applications. In this work, instead of using the conventional signal model in the literature, we derive a new signal model obtained through proper vectorization and reduction operations. Then, leveraging the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop a more efficient channel estimator that has complexity linear with $N$ and does not have special requirements on the relevant matrices, thanks to the robustness of UAMP. These facilitate the applications of the proposed algorithm to a general RIS-aided MIMO system with a larger $N$. Moreover, extensive numerical results show that the proposed estimator delivers much better performance and/or requires significantly less number of training symbols, thereby leading to notable reductions in both training overhead and latency.

Message Passing Based Structured Sparse Signal Recovery for Estimation of OTFS Channels with Fractional Doppler Shifts

The orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has emerged as a promising modulation scheme for high mobility wireless communications. To enable efficient OTFS detection in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, the DD domain channels need to be acquired accurately. To achieve the low latency requirement in future wireless communications, the time duration of the OTFS block should be small, therefore fractional Doppler shifts have to be considered to avoid significant modelling errors due to the assumption of integer Doppler shifts. However, there lack investigations on the estimation of OTFS channels with fractional Doppler shifts in the literature. In this work, we develop a high performing channel estimator for OTFS with the bi-orthogonal waveform or the rectangular waveform. Instead of estimating the DD domain channel directly, we estimate the channel gains and (fractional) Doppler shifts that parameterize the DD domain channel. The estimation is formulated as a structured signal recovery problem with a Bayesian treatment. Based on a factor graph representation of the problem, an efficient message passing algorithm is developed to recover the structured sparse signal (thereby the OTFS channel). The Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for the estimation is developed and the effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated through simulations.

Iterative Detection for Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation with Unitary Approximate Message Passing

The orthogonal-time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation has emerged as a promising modulation scheme for high mobility wireless communications. To harvest the time and frequency diversity promised by OTFS, some promising detectors, especially message passing based ones, have been developed by taking advantage of the sparsity of the channel in the delay-Doppler domain. However, when the number of channel paths is relatively large or fractional Doppler {shifts have} to be considered, the complexity of existing detectors is a concern, and the message passing based detectors may suffer from performance loss due to the short loops involved in message passing. In this work, we investigate the design of OTFS detectors based on the approximate message passing (AMP). In particular, {leveraging the unitary AMP (UAMP), we design new detectors that enjoy} the structure of the channel matrix and allow efficient implementation. In addition, the estimation of noise variance is incorporated into the UAMP-based detectors. Thanks to the robustness of UAMP relative to AMP, the UAMP-based detectors deliver superior performance, and outperform state-of-the-art detectors significantly. We also investigate iterative joint detection and decoding in a coded OTFS system, where the OTFS detectors are integrated into a powerful turbo receiver, leading to considerable performance gains.

Bayesian Receiver Design for Grant-Free NOMA with Message Passing Based Structured Signal Estimation

Grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is promising to achieve low latency massive access in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In grant-free NOMA, pilot signals are often used for user activity detection (UAD) and channel estimation (CE) prior to multiuser detection (MUD) of active users. However, the pilot overhead makes the communications inefficient for IoT devices with sporadic transmissions and short data packets, or when the channel coherence time is short. Hence, it is desirable to improve the efficiency by avoiding the use of pilot signals, which can also further achieve lower latency. This work focuses on Bayesian receiver design for grant-free low density signature orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (LDS-OFDM), where each user is allocated a unique low density spreading sequence. We propose to use the low density spreading sequences for active user detection, thereby avoiding the use of pilot signals. Firstly, the task of joint UAD, CE and MUD is formulated as a structured signal estimation problem. Then message passing based Bayesian approach is developed to solve the structured signal estimation problem. In particular, belief propagation (BP), expectation propagation (EP) and mean field (MF) message passing are used to develop efficient hybrid message passing algorithms to achieve trade-off between performance and complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed receiver for grant-free LDS-OFDM without the use of pilot signals.

Joint Channel-Estimation/Decoding with Frequency-Selective Channels and Few-Bit ADCs

We propose a fast and near-optimal approach to joint channel-estimation, equalization, and decoding of coded single-carrier (SC) transmissions over frequency-selective channels with few-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Our approach leverages parametric bilinear generalized approximate message passing (PBiGAMP) to reduce the implementation complexity of joint channel estimation and (soft) symbol decoding to that of a few fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Furthermore, it learns and exploits sparsity in the channel impulse response. Our work is motivated by millimeter-wave systems with bandwidths on the order of Gsamples/sec, where few-bit ADCs, SC transmissions, and fast processing all lead to significant reductions in power consumption and implementation cost. We numerically demonstrate our approach using signals and channels generated according to the IEEE 802.11ad wireless local area network (LAN) standard, in the case that the receiver uses analog beamforming and a single ADC.

Energy Harvesting Fairness in AN-aided Secure MU-MIMO SWIPT Systems with Cooperative Jammer

In this paper, we study a multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output secrecy simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) channel which consists of one transmitter, one cooperative jammer (CJ), multiple energy receivers (potential eavesdroppers, ERs), and multiple co-located receivers (CRs). We exploit the dual of artificial noise (AN) generation for facilitating efficient wireless energy transfer and secure transmission. Our aim is to maximize the minimum harvested energy among ERs and CRs subject to secrecy rate constraints for each CR and total transmit power constraint. By incorporating norm-bounded channel uncertainty model, we propose a iterative algorithm based on sequential parametric convex approximation to find a near-optimal solution. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm outperforms that of the conventional AN-aided scheme and CJ-aided scheme.

AN-aided Secure Transmission in Multi-user MIMO SWIPT Systems

In this paper, an energy harvesting scheme for a multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) secrecy channel with artificial noise (AN) transmission is investigated. Joint optimization of the transmit beamforming matrix, the AN covariance matrix, and the power splitting ratio is conducted to minimize the transmit power under the target secrecy rate, the total transmit power, and the harvested energy constraints. The original problem is shown to be non-convex, which is tackled by a two-layer decomposition approach. The inner layer problem is solved through semi-definite relaxation, and the outer problem is shown to be a single-variable optimization that can be solved by one-dimensional (1-D) line search. To reduce computational complexity, a sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method is proposed to find a near-optimal solution. Furthermore, tightness of the relaxation for the 1-D search method is validated by showing that the optimal solution of the relaxed problem is rank-one. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SPCA method achieves the same performance as the scheme based on 1-D search method but with much lower complexity.

A Low Complexity OFDM Receiver with Combined GAMP and MF Message Passing

With a unified belief propagation (BP) and mean field (MF) framework, we propose an iterative message passing receiver, which performs joint channel state and noise precision (the reciprocal of noise variance) estimation and decoding for OFDM systems. The recently developed generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) is incorporated to the BP-MF framework, where MF is used to handle observation factor nodes with unknown noise precision and GAMP is used for channel estimation in the time-frequency domain. Compared to state-of-the-art algorithms in the literature, the proposed algorithm either delivers similar performance with much lower complexity, or delivers much better performance with similar complexity. In addition, the proposed algorithm exhibits fastest convergence.

Low-Complexity Message Passing Based Massive MIMO Channel Estimation by Exploiting Unknown Sparse Common Support with Dirichlet Process

This paper investigates the problem of estimating sparse channels in massive MIMO systems. Most wireless channels are sparse with large delay spread, while some channels can be observed having sparse common support (SCS) within a certain area of the antenna array, i.e., the antenna array can be grouped into several clusters according to the sparse supports of channels. The SCS property is attractive when it comes to the estimation of large number of channels in massive MIMO systems. Using the SCS of channels, one expects better performance, but the number of clusters and the elements for each cluster are always unknown in the receiver. In this paper, {the Dirichlet process} is exploited to model such sparse channels where those in each cluster have SCS. We proposed a low complexity message passing based sparse Bayesian learning to perform channel estimation in massive MIMO systems by using combined BP with MF on a factor graph. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed massive MIMO sparse channel estimation outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms. Especially, it even shows better performance than the variational Bayesian method applied for massive MIMO channel estimation.
