Feature Concatenation Multi-view Subspace Clustering

Multi-view clustering is a learning paradigm based on multi-view data. Since statistic properties of different views are diverse, even incompatible, few approaches implement multi-view clustering based on the concatenated features straightforward. However, feature concatenation is a natural way to combine multi-view data. To this end, this paper proposes a novel multi-view subspace clustering approach dubbed Feature Concatenation Multi-view Subspace Clustering (FCMSC), which boosts the clustering performance by exploring the consensus information of multi-view data. Specifically, multi-view data are concatenated into a joint representation firstly, then, $l_{2,1}$-norm is integrated into the objective function to deal with the sample-specific and cluster-specific corruptions of multiple views. Moreover, a graph regularized FCMSC is also proposed in this paper to explore both the consensus information and complementary information of multi-view data for clustering. It is noteworthy that the obtained coefficient matrix is not derived by simply applying the Low-Rank Representation (LRR) to concatenated features directly. Finally, an effective algorithm based on the Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier (ALM) is designed to optimize the objective functions. Comprehensive experiments on six real-world datasets illustrate the superiority of the proposed methods over several state-of-the-art approaches for multi-view clustering.

Safety-Critical Control using Optimal-decay Control Barrier Function with Guaranteed Point-wise Feasibility

Safety is one of the fundamental problems in robotics. Recently, a quadratic program-based control barrier function (CBF) method has emerged as a way to enforce safety-critical constraints. Together with control Lyapunov function (CLF), it forms a safety-critical control strategy, named CLF-CBF-QP, which can mediate between achieving the control objective and ensuring safety, while being executable in real-time. However, once additional constraints such as input constraints are introduced, the CLF-CBF-QP may encounter infeasibility. In order to address the challenge that arises due to the infeasibility, we propose an optimal-decay form for safety-critical control wherein the decay rate of the CBF is optimized point-wise in time so as to guarantee point-wise feasibility when the state lies inside the safe set. The proposed control design is numerically validated using an adaptive cruise control example.

3DMNDT:3D multi-view registration method based on the normal distributions transform

The normal distributions transform (NDT) is an effective paradigm for the point set registration. This method is originally designed for pair-wise registration and it will suffer from great challenges when applied to multi-view registration. Under the NDT framework, this paper proposes a novel multi-view registration method, named 3D multi-view registration based on the normal distributions transform (3DMNDT), which integrates the K-means clustering and Lie algebra solver to achieve multi-view registration. More specifically, the multi-view registration is cast into the problem of maximum likelihood estimation. Then, the K-means algorithm is utilized to divide all data points into different clusters, where a normal distribution is computed to locally models the probability of measuring a data point in each cluster. Subsequently, the registration problem is formulated by the NDT-based likelihood function. To maximize this likelihood function, the Lie algebra solver is developed to sequentially optimize each rigid transformation. The proposed method alternately implements data point clustering, NDT computing, and likelihood maximization until desired registration results are obtained. Experimental results tested on benchmark data sets illustrate that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance for multi-view registration.

Towards Automatic Manipulation of Intra-cardiac Echocardiography Catheter

Intra-cardiac Echocardiography (ICE) is a powerful imaging modality for guiding electrophysiology and structural heart interventions. ICE provides real-time observation of anatomy, catheters, and emergent complications. However, this increased reliance on intraprocedural imaging creates a high cognitive demand on physicians who can often serve as interventionalist and imager. We present a robotic manipulator for ICE catheters to assist physicians with imaging and serve as a platform for developing processes for procedural automation. Herein, we introduce two application modules towards these goals: (1) a view recovery process that allows physicians to save views during intervention and automatically return with the push of a button and (2) a data-driven approach to compensate kinematic model errors that result from non-linear behaviors in catheter bending, providing more precise control of the catheter tip. View recovery is validated by repeated catheter positioning in cardiac phantom and animal experiments with position- and image-based analysis. We present a simplified calibration approach for error compensation and verify with complex rotation of the catheter in benchtop and phantom experiments under varying realistic curvature conditions. Results support that a robotic manipulator for ICE can provide an efficient and reproducible tool, potentially reducing execution time and promoting greater utilization of ICE imaging.

Effective multi-view registration of point sets based on student's t mixture model

Recently, Expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm has been introduced as an effective means to solve multi-view registration problem. Most of the previous methods assume that each data point is drawn from the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), which is difficult to deal with the noise with heavy-tail or outliers. Accordingly, this paper proposed an effective registration method based on Student's t Mixture Model (StMM). More specially, we assume that each data point is drawn from one unique StMM, where its nearest neighbors (NNs) in other point sets are regarded as the t-distribution centroids with equal covariances, membership probabilities, and fixed degrees of freedom. Based on this assumption, the multi-view registration problem is formulated into the maximization of the likelihood function including all rigid transformations. Subsequently, the EM algorithm is utilized to optimize rigid transformations as well as the only t-distribution covariance for multi-view registration. Since only a few model parameters require to be optimized, the proposed method is more likely to obtain the desired registration results. Besides, all t-distribution centroids can be obtained by the NN search method, it is very efficient to achieve multi-view registration. What's more, the t-distribution takes the noise with heavy-tail into consideration, which makes the proposed method be inherently robust to noises and outliers. Experimental results tested on benchmark data sets illustrate its superior performance on robustness and accuracy over state-of-the-art methods.

Animated Cassie: A Dynamic Relatable Robotic Character

Creating robots with emotional personalities will transform the usability of robots in the real world. As previous emotive social robots are mostly based on statically stable robots whose mobility is limited, this paper develops an animation to real world pipeline that enables dynamic bipedal robots that can twist, wiggle, and walk to behave with emotions. First, an animation method is introduced to design emotive motions for the virtual robot character. Second, a dynamics optimizer is used to convert the animated motion to dynamically feasible motion. Third, real time standing and walking controllers and an automaton are developed to bring the virtual character to life. This framework is deployed on a bipedal robot Cassie and validated in experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is one of the first to present an animatronic dynamic legged robot that is able to perform motions with desired emotional attributes. We term robots that use dynamic motions to convey emotions as Dynamic Relatable Robotic Characters.

Graph Neural Networks for UnsupervisedDomain Adaptation of Histopathological ImageAnalytics

Annotating histopathological images is a time-consuming andlabor-intensive process, which requires broad-certificated pathologistscarefully examining large-scale whole-slide images from cells to tissues.Recent frontiers of transfer learning techniques have been widely investi-gated for image understanding tasks with limited annotations. However, when applied for the analytics of histology images, few of them can effec-tively avoid the performance degradation caused by the domain discrep-ancy between the source training dataset and the target dataset, suchas different tissues, staining appearances, and imaging devices. To thisend, we present a novel method for the unsupervised domain adaptationin histopathological image analysis, based on a backbone for embeddinginput images into a feature space, and a graph neural layer for propa-gating the supervision signals of images with labels. The graph model isset up by connecting every image with its close neighbors in the embed-ded feature space. Then graph neural network is employed to synthesizenew feature representation from every image. During the training stage, target samples with confident inferences are dynamically allocated withpseudo labels. The cross-entropy loss function is used to constrain thepredictions of source samples with manually marked labels and targetsamples with pseudo labels. Furthermore, the maximum mean diversityis adopted to facilitate the extraction of domain-invariant feature repre-sentations, and contrastive learning is exploited to enhance the categorydiscrimination of learned features. In experiments of the unsupervised do-main adaptation for histopathological image classification, our methodachieves state-of-the-art performance on four public datasets

Bidirectional Loss Function for Label Enhancement and Distribution Learning

Label distribution learning (LDL) is an interpretable and general learning paradigm that has been applied in many real-world applications. In contrast to the simple logical vector in single-label learning (SLL) and multi-label learning (MLL), LDL assigns labels with a description degree to each instance. In practice, two challenges exist in LDL, namely, how to address the dimensional gap problem during the learning process of LDL and how to exactly recover label distributions from existing logical labels, i.e., Label Enhancement (LE). For most existing LDL and LE algorithms, the fact that the dimension of the input matrix is much higher than that of the output one is alway ignored and it typically leads to the dimensional reduction owing to the unidirectional projection. The valuable information hidden in the feature space is lost during the mapping process. To this end, this study considers bidirectional projections function which can be applied in LE and LDL problems simultaneously. More specifically, this novel loss function not only considers the mapping errors generated from the projection of the input space into the output one but also accounts for the reconstruction errors generated from the projection of the output space back to the input one. This loss function aims to potentially reconstruct the input data from the output data. Therefore, it is expected to obtain more accurate results. Finally, experiments on several real-world datasets are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method for both LE and LDL.

Robust Motion Averaging under Maximum Correntropy Criterion

Recently, the motion averaging method has been introduced as an effective means to solve the multi-view registration problem. This method aims to recover global motions from a set of relative motions, where the original method is sensitive to outliers due to using the Frobenius norm error in the optimization. Accordingly, this paper proposes a novel robust motion averaging method based on the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC). Specifically, the correntropy measure is used instead of utilizing Frobenius norm error to improve the robustness of motion averaging against outliers. According to the half-quadratic technique, the correntropy measure based optimization problem can be solved by the alternating minimization procedure, which includes operations of weight assignment and weighted motion averaging. Further, we design a selection strategy of adaptive kernel width to take advantage of correntropy. Experimental results on benchmark data sets illustrate that the new method has superior performance on accuracy and robustness for multi-view registration.

Consistent and Complementary Graph Regularized Multi-view Subspace Clustering

This study investigates the problem of multi-view clustering, where multiple views contain consistent information and each view also includes complementary information. Exploration of all information is crucial for good multi-view clustering. However, most traditional methods blindly or crudely combine multiple views for clustering and are unable to fully exploit the valuable information. Therefore, we propose a method that involves consistent and complementary graph-regularized multi-view subspace clustering (GRMSC), which simultaneously integrates a consistent graph regularizer with a complementary graph regularizer into the objective function. In particular, the consistent graph regularizer learns the intrinsic affinity relationship of data points shared by all views. The complementary graph regularizer investigates the specific information of multiple views. It is noteworthy that the consistent and complementary regularizers are formulated by two different graphs constructed from the first-order proximity and second-order proximity of multiple views, respectively. The objective function is optimized by the augmented Lagrangian multiplier method in order to achieve multi-view clustering. Extensive experiments on six benchmark datasets serve to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method over other state-of-the-art multi-view clustering methods.

Registration of multi-view point sets under the perspective of expectation-maximization

Registration of multi-view point sets is a prerequisite for 3D model reconstruction. To solve this problem, most of previous approaches either partially explore available information or blindly utilize unnecessary information to align each point set, which may lead to the undesired results or introduce extra computation complexity. To this end, this paper consider the multi-view registration problem as a maximum likelihood estimation problem and proposes a novel multi-view registration approach under the perspective of Expectation-Maximization (EM). The basic idea of our approach is that different data points are generated by the same number of Gaussian mixture models (GMMs). For each data point in one point set, its nearest neighbors can be searched from other well-aligned point sets. Then, we can suppose this data point is generated by the special GMM, which is composed of each nearest neighbor adhered with one Gaussian distribution. Based on this assumption, it is reasonable to define the likelihood function including all rigid transformations, which requires to be estimated for multi-view registration. Subsequently, the EM algorithm is utilized to maximize the likelihood function so as to estimate all rigid transformations. Finally, the proposed approach is tested on several bench mark data sets and compared with some state-of-the-art algorithms. Experimental results illustrate its super performance on accuracy, robustness and efficiency for the registration of multi-view point sets.

CFEA: Collaborative Feature Ensembling Adaptation for Domain Adaptation in Unsupervised Optic Disc and Cup Segmentation

Recently, deep neural networks have demonstrated comparable and even better performance with board-certified ophthalmologists in well-annotated datasets. However, the diversity of retinal imaging devices poses a significant challenge: domain shift, which leads to performance degradation when applying the deep learning models to new testing domains. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptation framework, called Collaborative Feature Ensembling Adaptation (CFEA), to effectively overcome this challenge. Our proposed CFEA is an interactive paradigm which presents an exquisite of collaborative adaptation through both adversarial learning and ensembling weights. In particular, we simultaneously achieve domain-invariance and maintain an exponential moving average of the historical predictions, which achieves a better prediction for the unlabeled data, via ensembling weights during training. Without annotating any sample from the target domain, multiple adversarial losses in encoder and decoder layers guide the extraction of domain-invariant features to confuse the domain classifier and meanwhile benefit the ensembling of smoothing weights. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that our CFEA model can overcome performance degradation and outperform the state-of-the-art methods in segmenting retinal optic disc and cup from fundus images. \textit{Code is available at \url{https://github.com/cswin/AWC}}.

Visual Space Optimization for Zero-shot Learning

Zero-shot learning, which aims to recognize new categories that are not included in the training set, has gained popularity owing to its potential ability in the real-word applications. Zero-shot learning models rely on learning an embedding space, where both semantic descriptions of classes and visual features of instances can be embedded for nearest neighbor search. Recently, most of the existing works consider the visual space formulated by deep visual features as an ideal choice of the embedding space. However, the discrete distribution of instances in the visual space makes the data structure unremarkable. We argue that optimizing the visual space is crucial as it allows semantic vectors to be embedded into the visual space more effectively. In this work, we propose two strategies to accomplish this purpose. One is the visual prototype based method, which learns a visual prototype for each visual class, so that, in the visual space, a class can be represented by a prototype feature instead of a series of discrete visual features. The other is to optimize the visual feature structure in an intermediate embedding space, and in this method we successfully devise a multilayer perceptron framework based algorithm that is able to learn the common intermediate embedding space and meanwhile to make the visual data structure more distinctive. Through extensive experimental evaluation on four benchmark datasets, we demonstrate that optimizing visual space is beneficial for zero-shot learning. Besides, the proposed prototype based method achieves the new state-of-the-art performance.

This paper presents a modified rotating element electric field vector (modified REV) method to calibrate the antenna array initial condition of an optical phased array (OPA) device. The new method follows a similar sequential individual antenna phase calibration process while it modifies the algorithm to avoid possible π phase error in traditional REV when large initial phase distribution and finite optical power measurement accuracy present. We show that the method produces statistically more accurate and predictable calibration result which is highly desired in practice.

Multi-view registration of unordered range scans by fast correspondence propagation of multi-scale descriptors

This paper proposes a global approach for the multi-view registration of unordered range scans. As the basis of multi-view registration, pair-wise registration is very pivotal. Therefore, we first select a good descriptor and accelerate its correspondence propagation for the pair-wise registration. Then, we design an effective rule to judge the reliability of pair-wise registration results. Subsequently, we propose a model augmentation method, which can utilize reliable results of pair-wise registration to augment the model shape. Finally, multi-view registration can be accomplished by operating the pair-wise registration and judgment, and model augmentation alternately. Experimental results on public available data sets show, that this approach can automatically achieve the multi-view registration of unordered range scans with good accuracy and effectiveness.

Adaptive Co-weighting Deep Convolutional Features For Object Retrieval

Aggregating deep convolutional features into a global image vector has attracted sustained attention in image retrieval. In this paper, we propose an efficient unsupervised aggregation method that uses an adaptive Gaussian filter and an elementvalue sensitive vector to co-weight deep features. Specifically, the Gaussian filter assigns large weights to features of region-of-interests (RoI) by adaptively determining the RoI's center, while the element-value sensitive channel vector suppresses burstiness phenomenon by assigning small weights to feature maps with large sum values of all locations. Experimental results on benchmark datasets validate the proposed two weighting schemes both effectively improve the discrimination power of image vectors. Furthermore, with the same experimental setting, our method outperforms other very recent aggregation approaches by a considerable margin.

Simultaneous merging multiple grid maps using the robust motion averaging

Mapping in the GPS-denied environment is an important and challenging task in the field of robotics. In the large environment, mapping can be significantly accelerated by multiple robots exploring different parts of the environment. Accordingly, a key problem is how to integrate these local maps built by different robots into a single global map. In this paper, we propose an approach for simultaneous merging of multiple grid maps by the robust motion averaging. The main idea of this approach is to recover all global motions for map merging from a set of relative motions. Therefore, it firstly adopts the pair-wise map merging method to estimate relative motions for grid map pairs. To obtain as many reliable relative motions as possible, a graph-based sampling scheme is utilized to efficiently remove unreliable relative motions obtained from the pair-wise map merging. Subsequently, the accurate global motions can be recovered from the set of reliable relative motions by the motion averaging. Experimental results carried on real robot data sets demonstrate that proposed approach can achieve simultaneous merging of multiple grid maps with good performances.

An Effective Approach for Point Clouds Registration Based on the Hard and Soft Assignments

For the registration of partially overlapping point clouds, this paper proposes an effective approach based on both the hard and soft assignments. Given two initially posed clouds, it firstly establishes the forward correspondence for each point in the data shape and calculates the value of binary variable, which can indicate whether this point correspondence is located in the overlapping areas or not. Then, it establishes the bilateral correspondence and computes bidirectional distances for each point in the overlapping areas. Based on the ratio of bidirectional distances, the exponential function is selected and utilized to calculate the probability value, which can indicate the reliability of the point correspondence. Subsequently, both the values of hard and soft assignments are embedded into the proposed objective function for registration of partially overlapping point clouds and a novel variant of ICP algorithm is proposed to obtain the optimal rigid transformation. The proposed approach can achieve good registration of point clouds, even when their overlap percentage is low. Experimental results tested on public data sets illustrate its superiority over previous approaches on accuracy and robustness.
