Federated Unlearning Over Wireless Networks

To comply with stringent data privacy regulations, federated unlearning (FU) has emerged as a critical paradigm. However, its implementation over wireless networks introduces severe communication latency and reliability challenges due to iterative calibration requirements and physical-layer channel uncertainties. In this paper, we investigate the problem of delay minimization for federated unlearning networks (FUN). Specifically, we establish a comprehensive system model that jointly incorporates the convergence behavior of the FUN algorithm, local device computation dynamics, and a worst-case robust transmission model operating under bounded channel state information (CSI) error. To solve the resulting non-convex joint resource allocation problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm. By exploiting the monotonicity and convexity properties of the system constraints, the problem is decomposed via a uniform scan over the local accuracy parameter, within which the optimal delay, bandwidth, power, and computation frequency are determined utilizing nested bisection and golden-section searches. Both theoretical analysis and extensive numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves polynomial complexity and significantly reduces the overall unlearning completion time compared to conventional baseline schemes.

Digital Twin Synchronization Over Mobile Embodied AI Network With Agentic Intelligence

Efficient digital twin (DT) synchronization relies on maintaining high-fidelity virtual representations with minimal age of information (AoI). However, the synergistic potential of cooperative sensing and autonomous mobility of the sensing agent remains underexplored in existing DT synchronization frameworks. In this paper, we propose an agentic AI-empowered mobile embodied AI network (MEAN) framework for DT synchronization. In the proposed hybrid architecture, the base station (BS) conducts global orchestration, while the agents autonomously execute a five-stage closed-loop workflow: move-to-sense, cooperative sensing, onboard semantic processing, channel-aware mobility, and uplink transmission. To optimize synchronization performance, we formulate a joint topology dispatching and multidimensional resource allocation problem aimed at minimizing the maximum twin deviation across regions, subject to heterogeneous sensing fidelity and energy budget constraints. To tackle this, we develop a hierarchical two-layer optimization algorithm, where the outer-layer refines multi-agent assignment via a dynamic matching game, and the inner-layer iteratively optimizes the continuous resources. Extensive simulation results verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate its substantial superiority over multiple baseline schemes in reducing synchronization deviation. Furthermore, the results reveal that semantic compression serves as a vital substitute for channel resources in latency reduction under constrained bandwidth, while autonomous velocity adaptation provides an essential degree of freedom for the system to navigate the fundamental energy-time trade-off.

Joint Communication and Computation Design for Mobile Embodied AI Network (MEAN)

This letter investigates the problem of energy efficient collaborative strategy for mobile embodied artificial intelligence network (MEAN) over wireless communication. In the considered model, the agents execute the tasks through collaboration, and they can switch between two operating modes based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and global collaboration. The dual-mode comprises the base station (BS)-assisted collaborative mode, in which agents make decisions through semantic communication with BS and then collaborate on tasks, and the local computing mode, in which the agents make decisions and execute tasks independently. Due to the dynamic wireless communication and flexible collaboration strategy, we jointly consider computation energy, communication energy, and task-execution energy with specific collaborative gains into a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the total system energy consumption. To solve it, we propose a lower-complexity enumeration algorithm: first, we get the optimal closed-form solution for semantic compression ratio and transmit power by proving the strict convexity. Second, we determine the scale of collaboration and the operating mode of each agent by a greedy sorting algorithm based on individual energy-saving potentials. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the total energy consumption compared to benchmark schemes.

Split and Aggregation Learning for Foundation Models Over Mobile Embodied AI Network (MEAN): A Comprehensive Survey

The rapid advancements in foundation models and sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems necessitate the development of efficient, scalable, and privacy-preserving machine learning approaches. For foundation models in 6G, split learning (SL) and aggregation learning (AL) have emerged as promising paradigms that address key challenges in distributed artificial intelligence (AI), such as communication efficiency, resource allocation, and data privacy. SL enables multiple entities to collaboratively train deep learning models by partitioning neural networks, while AL focuses on aggregating intermediate results or model updates from multiple participants, improving robustness, optimizing resource utilization, and mitigating data leakage risks. Specifically, SL is ideal for scenarios requiring strict data isolation (e.g., vertical collaborations), whereas AL suits homogeneous horizontal data settings; they can be combined to balance privacy and communication efficiency. This survey provides a comprehensive analysis of SL and AL in 6G communication systems, exploring their architectures, technical methodologies, and integration with AI-native 6G communication technologies. We examine different SL configurations, aggregation techniques, and their roles in optimizing distributed foundation models. Furthermore, we discuss their applications in emerging wireless networks, including semantic communication, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs), and quantum communication. By analyzing the impact of SL and AL, this survey provides insights into their role in shaping distributed AI-driven communication systems in the 6G era, focusing on efficiency, privacy preservation, and scalability.

Semantic Feature Multiple Access Empowered Integrated Learning and Communication Networks

Integrated learning and communication (ILAC) unifies learned transceivers with radio resource management, where semantic feature multiple access (SFMA) enables paired users to superpose their learned representations over shared time-frequency resources. Unlike conventional multiple access schemes, SFMA interference arises in the learned feature space and depends jointly on the user pair, the transmit power, and the compression ratio. This coupling ties binary pairing decisions to continuous resource variables, yielding a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem. To address this problem, we first propose similarity-conditioned SFMA (SC-SFMA), a Swin Transformer-based transceiver whose dual-conditioned similarity modulator (DC-SimM) gates cross-user feature fusion according to the inter-user semantic similarity. We then characterize the resulting pair-dependent interference by a bivariate logistic function parameterized by transmit power and compression ratio, thereby bridging the learned transceiver with network-level optimization. On this basis, we formulate a sum-rate maximization problem subject to per-user distortion, latency, energy, power, and bandwidth constraints. To solve this problem, we develop a three-block alternating optimization algorithm that integrates dual-decomposition-assisted compression ratio allocation, trust-region successive convex approximation (SCA) for joint power-bandwidth optimization, and dynamic feasible graph-based user pairing. Simulation results show that SC-SFMA achieves considerable peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and multi-scale structural similarity index measure (MS-SSIM) gains over deep joint source-channel coding (JSCC) and separation-based baselines. The proposed optimization framework attains significant sum rate improvements over conventional multiple access baselines.

Agentic AI-Empowered Wireless Agent Networks With Semantic-Aware Collaboration via ILAC

The rapid development of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) is driving future wireless networks to evolve from passive data pipes into intelligent collaborative ecosystems under the emerging paradigm of integrated learning and communication (ILAC). However, realizing efficient agentic collaboration faces challenges not only in handling semantic redundancy but also in the lack of an integrated mechanism for communication, computation, and control. To address this, we propose a wireless agent network (WAN) framework that orchestrates a progressive knowledge aggregation mechanism. Specifically, we formulate the aggregation process as a joint energy minimization problem where the agents perform semantic compression to eliminate redundancy, optimize transmission power to deliver semantic payloads, and adjust physical trajectories to proactively enhance channel qualities. To solve this problem, we develop a hierarchical algorithm that integrates inner-level resource optimization with outer-level topology evolution. Theoretically, we reveal that incorporating a potential field into the topology evolution effectively overcomes the short-sightedness of greedy matching, providing a mathematically rigorous heuristic for long-term energy minimization. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves superior energy efficiency and scalability compared to conventional benchmarks, validating the efficacy of semantic-aware collaboration in dynamic environments.

Energy-Efficient Probabilistic Semantic Communication Over Visible Light Networks With Rate Splitting

Visible light communication (VLC) is emerging as a key technology for future wireless communication systems due to its unique physical-layer advantages over traditional radio-frequency (RF)-based systems. However, its integration with higher-layer techniques, such as semantic communication, remains underexplored. This paper investigates the energy efficiency maximization problem in a resource-constrained VLC-based probabilistic semantic communication (PSCom) system. In the considered model, light-emitting diode (LED) transmitters perform semantic compression to reduce data size, which incurs additional computation overhead. The compressed semantic information is transmitted to the users for semantic inference using a shared knowledge base that requires periodic updates to ensure synchronization. In the PSCom system, the knowledge base is represented by probabilistic graphs. To enable simultaneous transmission of both knowledge and information data, rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is employed. The optimization problem focuses on maximizing energy efficiency by jointly optimizing transmit beamforming, direct current (DC) bias, common rate allocation, and semantic compression ratio, while accounting for both communication and computation costs. To solve this problem, an alternating optimization algorithm based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and Dinkelbach method is developed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Scene Graph-Aided Probabilistic Semantic Communication for Image Transmission

Semantic communication emphasizes the transmission of meaning rather than raw symbols. It offers a promising solution to alleviate network congestion and improve transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose a wireless image communication framework that employs probability graphs as shared semantic knowledge base among distributed users. High-level image semantics are represented via scene graphs, and a two-stage compression algorithm is devised to remove predictable components based on learned conditional and co-occurrence probabilities. At the transmitter, the algorithm filters redundant relations and entity pairs, while at the receiver, semantic recovery leverages the same probability graphs to reconstruct omitted information. For further research, we also put forward a multi-round semantic compression algorithm with its theoretical performance analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that our semantic-aware scheme achieves superior transmission throughput and satiable semantic alignment, validating the efficacy of leveraging high-level semantics for image communication.

Semantic-Aware Visual Information Transmission With Key Information Extraction Over Wireless Networks

The advent of 6G networks demands unprecedented levels of intelligence, adaptability, and efficiency to address challenges such as ultra-high-speed data transmission, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity in dynamic environments. Traditional wireless image transmission frameworks, reliant on static configurations and isolated source-channel coding, struggle to balance computational efficiency, robustness, and quality under fluctuating channel conditions. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes an AI-native deep joint source-channel coding (JSCC) framework tailored for resource-constrained 6G networks. Our approach integrates key information extraction and adaptive background synthesis to enable intelligent, semantic-aware transmission. Leveraging AI-driven tools, Mediapipe for human pose detection and Rembg for background removal, the model dynamically isolates foreground features and matches backgrounds from a pre-trained library, reducing data payloads while preserving visual fidelity. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) compared with traditional JSCC method, especially under low-SNR conditions. This approach offers a practical solution for multimedia services in resource-constrained mobile communications.

Fair Resource Allocation for Probabilistic Semantic Communication in IIoT

In this paper, the problem of minimum rate maximization for probabilistic semantic communication (PSCom) in industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is investigated. In the considered model, users employ semantic information extraction techniques to compress the original data before sending it to the base station (BS). During this semantic compression process, knowledge graphs are employed to represent the semantic information, and the probability graph sharing between users and the BS is utilized to further compress the knowledge graph. The semantic compression process can significantly reduce the transmitted data size, but it inevitably introduces additional computation overhead. Considering the limited power budget of the user, we formulate a joint communication and computation optimization problem is formulated aiming to maximize the minimum equivalent rate among all users while meeting total power and semantic compression ratio constraints. To address this problem, two algorithms with different computational complexities are proposed to obtain suboptimal solutions. One algorithm is based on a prorate distribution of transmission power, while the other traverses the combinations of semantic compression ratios among all users. In both algorithms, bisection is employed in order to achieve the greatest minimum equivalent rate. The simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Energy-Efficient Probabilistic Semantic Communication over Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks

Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs) are emerging as a pivotal element in the evolution of future wireless networks. Despite their potential, the joint design of communication and computation within SAGINs remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, the problem of energy efficiency in SAGIN-enabled probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) system is investigated. In the considered model, a satellite needs to transmit data to multiple ground terminals (GTs) via an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) acting as a relay. During transmission, the satellite and the UAV can use PSC technique to compress the transmitting data, while the GTs can automatically recover the missing information. The PSC is underpinned by shared probability graphs that serve as a common knowledge base among the transceivers, allowing for resource-saving communication at the expense of increased computation resource. Through analysis, the computation overhead function in PSC is a piecewise function with respect to the semantic compression ratio. Therefore, it is important to make a balance between communication and computation to achieve optimal energy efficiency. The joint communication and computation problem is formulated as an optimization problem aiming to minimize the total communication and computation energy consumption of the network under latency, power, computation capacity, bandwidth, semantic compression ratio, and UAV location constraints. To solve this non-convex non-smooth problem, we propose an iterative algorithm where the closed-form solutions for computation capacity allocation and UAV altitude are obtained at each iteration. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A Joint Communication and Computation Design for Distributed RISs Assisted Probabilistic Semantic Communication in IIoT

In this paper, the problem of spectral-efficient communication and computation resource allocation for distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) assisted probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) in industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) is investigated. In the considered model, multiple RISs are deployed to serve multiple users, while PSC adopts compute-then-transmit protocol to reduce the transmission data size. To support high-rate transmission, the semantic compression ratio, transmit power allocation, and distributed RISs deployment must be jointly considered. This joint communication and computation problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to maximize the sum semantic-aware transmission rate of the system under total transmit power, phase shift, RIS-user association, and semantic compression ratio constraints. To solve this problem, a many-to-many matching scheme is proposed to solve the RIS-user association subproblem, the semantic compression ratio subproblem is addressed following greedy policy, while the phase shift of RIS can be optimized using the tensor based beamforming. Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Resource Allocation for Green Probabilistic Semantic Communication with Rate Splitting

In this paper, the energy efficient design for probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) system with rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is investigated. Basic principles are first reviewed to show how the PSC system works to extract, compress and transmit the semantic information in a task-oriented transmission. Subsequently, the process of how multiuser semantic information can be represented, compressed and transmitted with RSMA is presented, during which the semantic compression ratio (SCR) is introduced to directly measure the computation overhead in a transmission task, and communication overhead is indirectly described as well. Hence, the problem of wireless resource allocation jointly considering the computation and communication consumption for the PSC system with RSMA is investigated. Both conventional wireless resource constraints and unique constraints on semantic communication are considered to maximize the energy efficiency (EE). Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Probabilistic Semantic Communication over Wireless Networks with Rate Splitting

In this paper, the problem of joint transmission and computation resource allocation for probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) system with rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is investigated. In the considered model, the base station (BS) needs to transmit a large amount of data to multiple users with RSMA. Due to limited communication resources, the BS is required to utilize semantic communication techniques to compress the large-sized data. The semantic communication is enabled by shared probability graphs between the BS and the users. The probability graph can be used to further compress the transmission data at the BS, while the received compressed semantic information can be recovered through using the same shared probability graph at each user side. The semantic information compression progress consumes additional computation power at the BS, which inevitably decreases the transmission power due to limited total power budget. Considering both the effect of semantic compression ratio and computation power, the semantic rate expression for RSMA is first obtained. Then, based on the obtained rate expression, an optimization problem is formulated with the aim of maximizing the sum of semantic rates of all users under total power, semantic compression ratio, and rate allocation constraints. To tackle this problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed, where the rate allocation and transmit beamforming design subproblem is solved using a successive convex approximation method, and the semantic compression ratio subproblem is addressed using a greedy algorithm. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

A Joint Communication and Computation Design for Probabilistic Semantic Communications

In this paper, the problem of joint transmission and computation resource allocation for a multi-user probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) network is investigated. In the considered model, users employ semantic information extraction techniques to compress their large-sized data before transmitting them to a multi-antenna base station (BS). Our model represents large-sized data through substantial knowledge graphs, utilizing shared probability graphs between the users and the BS for efficient semantic compression. The resource allocation problem is formulated as an optimization problem with the objective of maximizing the sum of equivalent rate of all users, considering total power budget and semantic resource limit constraints. The computation load considered in the PSC network is formulated as a non-smooth piecewise function with respect to the semantic compression ratio. To tackle this non-convex non-smooth optimization challenge, a three-stage algorithm is proposed where the solutions for the receive beamforming matrix of the BS, transmit power of each user, and semantic compression ratio of each user are obtained stage by stage. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

A Joint Communication and Computation Design for Semantic Wireless Communication with Probability Graph

In this paper, we delve into the challenge of optimizing joint communication and computation for semantic communication over wireless networks using a probability graph framework. In the considered model, the base station (BS) extracts the small-sized compressed semantic information through removing redundant messages based on the stored knowledge base. Specifically, the knowledge base is encapsulated in a probability graph that encapsulates statistical relations. At the user side, the compressed information is accurately deduced using the same probability graph employed by the BS. While this approach introduces an additional computational overhead for semantic information extraction, it significantly curtails communication resource consumption by transmitting concise data. We derive both communication and computation cost models based on the inference process of the probability graph. Building upon these models, we introduce a joint communication and computation resource allocation problem aimed at minimizing the overall energy consumption of the network, while accounting for latency, power, and semantic constraints. To address this problem, we obtain a closed-form solution for transmission power under a fixed semantic compression ratio. Subsequently, we propose an efficient linear search-based algorithm to attain the optimal solution for the considered problem with low computational complexity. Simulation results underscore the effectiveness of our proposed system, showcasing notable improvements compared to conventional non-semantic schemes.
