Data Collection and Wireless Communication in Internet of Things (IoT) Using Economic Analysis and Pricing Models: A Survey

This paper provides a state-of-the-art literature review on economic analysis and pricing models for data collection and wireless communication in Internet of Things (IoT). Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are the main component of IoT which collect data from the environment and transmit the data to the sink nodes. For long service time and low maintenance cost, WSNs require adaptive and robust designs to address many issues, e.g., data collection, topology formation, packet forwarding, resource and power optimization, coverage optimization, efficient task allocation, and security. For these issues, sensors have to make optimal decisions from current capabilities and available strategies to achieve desirable goals. This paper reviews numerous applications of the economic and pricing models, known as intelligent rational decision-making methods, to develop adaptive algorithms and protocols for WSNs. Besides, we survey a variety of pricing strategies in providing incentives for phone users in crowdsensing applications to contribute their sensing data. Furthermore, we consider the use of some pricing models in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. Finally, we highlight some important open research issues as well as future research directions of applying economic and pricing models to IoT.

The Tradeoff Analysis in RF-Powered Backscatter Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we introduce a new model for RF-powered cognitive radio networks with the aim to improve the performance for secondary systems. In our proposed model, when the primary channel is busy, the secondary transmitter is able either to backscatter the primary signals to transmit data to the secondary receiver or to harvest RF energy from the channel. The harvested energy then will be used to transmit data to the receiver when the channel becomes idle. We first analyze the tradeoff between backscatter communication and harvest-then-transmit protocol in the network. To maximize the overall transmission rate of the secondary network, we formulate an optimization problem to find time ratio between taking backscatter and harvest-then-transmit modes. Through numerical results, we show that under the proposed model can achieve the overall transmission rate higher than using either the backscatter communication or the harvest-then-transmit protocol.

Collaborative Smartphone Sensing using Overlapping Coalition Formation Games

With the rapid growth of sensor technology, smartphone sensing has become an effective approach to improve the quality of smartphone applications. However, due to time-varying wireless channels and lack of incentives for the users to participate, the quality and quantity of the data uploaded by the smartphone users are not always satisfying. In this paper, we consider a smartphone sensing system in which a platform publicizes multiple tasks, and the smartphone users choose a set of tasks to participate in. In the traditional non-cooperative approach with incentives, each smartphone user gets rewards from the platform as an independent individual and the limit of the wireless channel resources is often omitted. To tackle this problem, we introduce a novel cooperative approach with an overlapping coalition formation game (OCF-game) model, in which the smartphone users can cooperate with each other to form the overlapping coalitions for different sensing tasks. We also utilize a centralized case to describe the upper bound of the system sensing performance. Simulation results show that the cooperative approach achieves a better performance than the non-cooperative one in various situations.

An approximate message passing approach for compressive hyperspectral imaging using a simultaneous low-rank and joint-sparsity prior

This paper considers a compressive sensing (CS) approach for hyperspectral data acquisition, which results in a practical compression ratio substantially higher than the state-of-the-art. Applying simultaneous low-rank and joint-sparse (L&S) model to the hyperspectral data, we propose a novel algorithm to joint reconstruction of hyperspectral data based on loopy belief propagation that enables the exploitation of both structured sparsity and amplitude correlations in the data. Experimental results with real hyperspectral datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art CS-based solutions with substantial reductions in reconstruction error.

Secrecy Analysis on Network Coding in Bidirectional Multibeam Satellite Communications

Network coding is an efficient means to improve the spectrum efficiency of satellite communications. However, its resilience to eavesdropping attacks is not well understood. This paper studies the confidentiality issue in a bidirectional satellite network consisting of two mobile users who want to exchange message via a multibeam satellite using the XOR network coding protocol. We aim to maximize the sum secrecy rate by designing the optimal beamforming vector along with optimizing the return and forward link time allocation. The problem is non-convex, and we find its optimal solution using semidefinite programming together with a 1-D search. For comparison, we also solve the sum secrecy rate maximization problem for a conventional reference scheme without using network coding. Simulation results using realistic system parameters demonstrate that the bidirectional scheme using network coding provides considerably higher secrecy rate compared to that of the conventional scheme.

Radio Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Underlay Communication Using Hypergraph Theory

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication has been recognized as a promising technique to offload the traffic for the evolved Node B (eNB). However, the D2D transmission as an underlay causes severe interference to both the cellular and other D2D links, which imposes a great technical challenge to radio resource allocation. Conventional graph based resource allocation methods typically consider the interference between two user equipments (UEs), but they cannot model the interference from multiple UEs to completely characterize the interference. In this paper, we study channel allocation using hypergraph theory to coordinate the interference between D2D pairs and cellular UEs, where an arbitrary number of D2D pairs are allowed to share the uplink channels with the cellular UEs. Hypergraph coloring is used to model the cumulative interference from multiple D2D pairs, and thus, eliminate the mutual interference. Simulation results show that the system capacity is significantly improved using the proposed hypergraph method in comparison to the conventional graph based one.

Learning for Robust Routing Based on Stochastic Game in Cognitive Radio Networks

This paper studies the problem of robust spectrum-aware routing in a multi-hop, multi-channel Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) with the presence of malicious nodes in the secondary network. The proposed routing scheme models the interaction among the Secondary Users (SUs) as a stochastic game. By allowing the backward propagation of the path utility information from the next-hop nodes, the stochastic routing game is decomposed into a series of stage games. The best-response policies are learned through the process of smooth fictitious play, which is guaranteed to converge without flooding of the information about the local utilities and behaviors. To address the problem of mixed insider attacks with both routing-toward-primary and sink-hole attacks, the trustworthiness of the neighbor nodes is evaluated through a multi-arm bandit process for each SU. The simulation results show that the proposed routing algorithm is able to enforce the cooperation of the malicious SUs and reduce the negative impact of the attacks on the routing selection process.

Listen-and-Talk: Protocol Design and Analysis for Full-duplex Cognitive Radio Networks

In traditional cognitive radio networks, secondary users (SUs) typically access the spectrum of primary users (PUs) by a two-stage "listen-before-talk" (LBT) protocol, i.e., SUs sense the spectrum holes in the first stage before transmitting in the second. However, there exist two major problems: 1) transmission time reduction due to sensing, and 2) sensing accuracy impairment due to data transmission. In this paper, we propose a "listen-and-talk" (LAT) protocol with the help of full-duplex (FD) technique that allows SUs to simultaneously sense and access the vacant spectrum. Spectrum utilization performance is carefully analyzed, with the closed-form spectrum waste ratio and collision ratio with the PU provided. Also, regarding the secondary throughput, we report the existence of a tradeoff between the secondary transmit power and throughput. Based on the power-throughput tradeoff, we derive the analytical local optimal transmit power for SUs to achieve both high throughput and satisfying sensing accuracy. Numerical results are given to verify the proposed protocol and the theoretical results.

Mobile Big Data Analytics Using Deep Learning and Apache Spark

The proliferation of mobile devices, such as smartphones and Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets, results in the recent mobile big data (MBD) era. Collecting MBD is unprofitable unless suitable analytics and learning methods are utilized for extracting meaningful information and hidden patterns from data. This article presents an overview and brief tutorial of deep learning in MBD analytics and discusses a scalable learning framework over Apache Spark. Specifically, a distributed deep learning is executed as an iterative MapReduce computing on many Spark workers. Each Spark worker learns a partial deep model on a partition of the overall MBD, and a master deep model is then built by averaging the parameters of all partial models. This Spark-based framework speeds up the learning of deep models consisting of many hidden layers and millions of parameters. We use a context-aware activity recognition application with a real-world dataset containing millions of samples to validate our framework and assess its speedup effectiveness.

A Survey on Applications of Model-Free Strategy Learning in Cognitive Wireless Networks

Model-free learning has been considered as an efficient tool for designing control mechanisms when the model of the system environment or the interaction between the decision-making entities is not available as a-priori knowledge. With model-free learning, the decision-making entities adapt their behaviors based on the reinforcement from their interaction with the environment and are able to (implicitly) build the understanding of the system through trial-and-error mechanisms. Such characteristics of model-free learning is highly in accordance with the requirement of cognition-based intelligence for devices in cognitive wireless networks. Recently, model-free learning has been considered as one key implementation approach to adaptive, self-organized network control in cognitive wireless networks. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on the applications of the state-of-the-art model-free learning mechanisms in cognitive wireless networks. According to the system models that those applications are based on, a systematic overview of the learning algorithms in the domains of single-agent system, multi-agent systems and multi-player games is provided. Furthermore, the applications of model-free learning to various problems in cognitive wireless networks are discussed with the focus on how the learning mechanisms help to provide the solutions to these problems and improve the network performance over the existing model-based, non-adaptive methods. Finally, a broad

Market Model and Optimal Pricing Scheme of Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT)

Big data has been emerging as a new approach in utilizing large datasets to optimize complex system operations. Big data is fueled with Internet-of-Things (IoT) services that generate immense sensory data from numerous sensors and devices. While most current research focus of big data is on machine learning and resource management design, the economic modeling and analysis have been largely overlooked. This paper thus investigates the big data market model and optimal pricing scheme. We first study the utility of data from the data science perspective, i.e., using the machine learning methods. We then introduce the market model and develop an optimal pricing scheme afterward. The case study shows clearly the suitability of the proposed data utility functions. The numerical examples demonstrate that big data and IoT service provider can achieve the maximum profit through the proposed market model.

Smart Data Pricing Models for Internet-of-Things (IoT): A Bundling Strategy Approach

Internet of things (IoT) has emerged as a new paradigm for the future Internet. In IoT, enormous devices are connected to the Internet and thereby being a huge data source for numerous applications. In this article, we focus on addressing data management in IoT through using a smart data pricing (SDP) approach. With SDP, data can be managed flexibly and efficiently through intelligent and adaptive incentive mechanisms. Moreover, it is a major source of revenue for providers and partners. We propose a new pricing scheme for IoT service providers to determine the sensing data buying price and IoT service subscription fee offered to sensor owners and service users, respectively. Additionally, we adopt the bundling strategy that allows multiple providers to form a coalition and bid their services as a bundle, attracting more users and achieving higher revenue. Finally, we outline some important open research issues for SDP and IoT.

Offloading in Software Defined Network at Edge with Information Asymmetry: A Contract Theoretical Approach

The proliferation of highly capable mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has significantly increased the demand for wireless access. Software defined network (SDN) at edge is viewed as one promising technology to simplify the traffic offloading process for current wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate the incentive problem in SDN-at-edge of how to motivate a third party access points (APs) such as WiFi and smallcells to offload traffic for the central base stations (BSs). The APs will only admit the traffic from the BS under the precondition that their own traffic demand is satisfied. Under the information asymmetry that the APs know more about own traffic demands, the BS needs to distribute the payment in accordance with the APs' idle capacity to maintain a compatible incentive. First, we apply a contract-theoretic approach to model and analyze the service trading between the BS and APs. Furthermore, other two incentive mechanisms: optimal discrimination contract and linear pricing contract are introduced to serve as the comparisons of the anti adverse selection contract. Finally, the simulation results show that the contract can effectively incentivize APs' participation and offload the cellular network traffic. Furthermore, the anti adverse selection contract achieves the optimal outcome under the information asymmetry scenario.

Exploring Social Ties for Enhanced Device-to-Device Communications in Wireless Networks

Device-to-device (D2D) communications is seen as a major technology to overcome the imminent wireless capacity crunch and to enable novel application services. In this paper, we propose a novel, social-aware approach for optimizing D2D communications by exploiting two network layers: the social network and the physical, wireless network. First we formulate the physical layer D2D network according to users' encounter histories. Subsequently, we propose a novel approach, based on the so-called Indian Buffet Process, so as to model the distribution of contents in users' online social networks. Given the online and offline social relations collected by the Evolved Node B, we jointly optimize the traffic offload process in D2D communication. Simulation results show that the proposed approach offload the traffic of Evolved Node B successfully.

In this paper, we propose a social-aware approach for optimizing D2D communication by exploiting two layers: the social network and the physical wireless layers. First we formulate the physical layer D2D network according to users' encounter histories. Given the social relations collected by the Evolved Node B (eNB), we jointly optimize the traffic offloading process in D2D communication. In addition, we give the Chernoff bound and approximated cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the offloaded traffic. In the simulation, we proved the effectiveness of the bound and CDF. The numerical results based on real traces show that the proposed approach offload the traffic of eNB's successfully.

Recoverability of Group Sparse Signals from Corrupted Measurements via Robust Group Lasso

This paper considers the problem of recovering a group sparse signal matrix $\mathbf{Y} = [\mathbf{y}_1, \cdots, \mathbf{y}_L]$ from sparsely corrupted measurements $\mathbf{M} = [\mathbf{A}_{(1)}\mathbf{y}_{1}, \cdots, \mathbf{A}_{(L)}\mathbf{y}_{L}] + \mathbf{S}$, where $\mathbf{A}_{(i)}$'s are known sensing matrices and $\mathbf{S}$ is an unknown sparse error matrix. A robust group lasso (RGL) model is proposed to recover $\mathbf{Y}$ and $\mathbf{S}$ through simultaneously minimizing the $\ell_{2,1}$-norm of $\mathbf{Y}$ and the $\ell_1$-norm of $\mathbf{S}$ under the measurement constraints. We prove that $\mathbf{Y}$ and $\mathbf{S}$ can be exactly recovered from the RGL model with a high probability for a very general class of $\mathbf{A}_{(i)}$'s.

Exploiting Device-to-Device Communications to Enhance Spatial Reuse for Popular Content Downloading in Directional mmWave Small Cells

With the explosive growth of mobile demand, small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands underlying the macrocell networks have attracted intense interest from both academia and industry. MmWave communications in the 60 GHz band are able to utilize the huge unlicensed bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps transmission rates. In this case, device-to-device (D2D) communications in mmWave bands should be fully exploited due to no interference with the macrocell networks and higher achievable transmission rates. In addition, due to less interference by directional transmission, multiple links including D2D links can be scheduled for concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse). With the popularity of content-based mobile applications, popular content downloading in the small cells needs to be optimized to improve network performance and enhance user experience. In this paper, we develop an efficient scheduling scheme for popular content downloading in mmWave small cells, termed PCDS (popular content downloading scheduling), where both D2D communications in close proximity and concurrent transmissions are exploited to improve transmission efficiency. In PCDS, a transmission path selection algorithm is designed to establish multi-hop transmission paths for users, aiming at better utilization of D2D communications and concurrent transmissions. After transmission path selection, a concurrent transmission scheduling algorithm is designed to maximize the spatial reuse gain. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns, we demonstrate PCDS achieves near-optimal performance in terms of delay and throughput, and also superior performance compared with other existing protocols, especially under heavy load.
