Mechanical Origin of High-Temperature Thermal Stability in Platinum Oxides

Platinum oxides are vital catalysts, but their limited thermal stability hinders applications. Recent studies have uncovered a structural transition in two-dimensional platinum oxides that significantly enhances their thermal resilience by several hundred Kelvin. Herein, we demonstrate that this enhanced stability stems from the mechanical robustness of the elastic network at the atomic scale. Prior to the transition, an over-constrained lattice generates localized states of self-stress through an incommensurate Moir\'{e} pattern with the platinum substrate, reducing thermal endurance. After the transition, the oxide shifts to a mechanically flexible structure with balanced degrees of freedom and constraints. The isostatic network, together with the platinum substrate, forms a commensurate Moir\'{e} superlattice that relaxes elastic energy and enhances stability. These findings highlight the fundamental role of network connectivity in governing thermal stability, and provide a design principle for catalysts in extreme environments.

A Visual Cooperative Localization Method for Airborne Magnetic Surveying Based on a Manifold Sensor Fusion Algorithm Using Lie Groups

Recent advancements in UAV technology have spurred interest in developing multi-UAV aerial surveying systems for use in confined environments where GNSS signals are blocked or jammed. This paper focuses airborne magnetic surveying scenarios. To obtain clean magnetic measurements reflecting the Earth's magnetic field, the magnetic sensor must be isolated from other electronic devices, creating a significant localization challenge. We propose a visual cooperative localization solution. The solution incorporates a visual processing module and an improved manifold-based sensor fusion algorithm, delivering reliable and accurate positioning information. Real flight experiments validate the approach, demonstrating single-axis centimeter-level accuracy and decimeter-level overall 3D positioning accuracy.

Bottom-up Growth of Graphene Nanospears and Nanoribbons

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are considered one of the most promising materials for next generation electronics, however a reliable and controllable synthesis method is still lacking. Here, we report the CVD growth of GNRs on a copper surface and the corresponding mechanisms of growth. One-dimensional GNR growth is enabled by a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) graphene growth guided by on-surface propagation of a liquid catalyst particle. Controlling the suppression of vapor-solid-solid (VSS) graphene growth along the width direction of the GNR by tuning the flow of H2 during growth gives rise to a spear head-shaped graphene that we term graphene nanospears (GNSs). The real-time visual and spatially resolved observations confirm the VSS growth of graphene can be fully suppressed and lead to GNR formation on Cu surface. These findings reveal key insight into the growth mechanism of graphene and open a door for achieving a facile and scalable method of synthesizing free standing GNRs.
