DECIS: Dual-Evidence Corrective Verification for Interpretable Strabismus Diagnostic Decision-Making

Strabismus is a common ocular disorder that requires fine-grained subtype diagnosis for individualized treatment planning. However, existing deep learning methods mainly provide diagnostic predictions without transparent reasoning, while recent large vision-language models (LVLMs), although promising for joint image understanding and report generation, remain highly prone to hallucination in this evidence-sensitive and rule-driven medical task. To address these challenges, we propose DECIS, a Dual-Evidence Corrective verification for Interpretable Strabismus diagnostic decision-making framework. DECIS transforms black-box end-to-end generation into a structured diagnostic process consisting of candidate hypothesis generation, dual-evidence constrained context, evidence-based corrective verification, and report generation. Specifically, we introduce a Dual-Evidence Constrained Context (DECC) mechanism that jointly organizes visual evidence from the photograph of the nine cardinal positions of gaze and evidence-based clinical diagnostic rules into a constrained context for reliable diagnostic reasoning. We further develop an Evidence-Based Corrective Verification (EBCV) mechanism that verifies whether the current diagnostic hypothesis is supported by visual evidence, heatmap-based visual cues, and evidence-based clinical diagnostic rules. Hypothesis refinement is triggered when inconsistency is detected. Experiments on a fine-grained strabismus benchmark demonstrate that DECIS not only outperforms other state-of-the-art diagnostic systems, improving the weighted F1 score from 72.0% to 91.3%, but also improves the clinical reliability (consistency, alignment, and completeness) of generated diagnostic reports. These results demonstrate that DECIS provides an effective solution for building accurate, evidence-based, and clinically interpretable strabismus diagnosis systems.

Robust Policy Learning for Multi-UAV Collision Avoidance with Causal Feature Selection

In unseen and complex outdoor environments, collision avoidance navigation for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms presents a challenging problem. It requires UAVs to navigate through various obstacles and complex backgrounds. Existing collision avoidance navigation methods based on deep reinforcement learning show promising performance but suffer from poor generalization abilities, resulting in performance degradation in unseen environments. To address this issue, we investigate the cause of weak generalization ability in DRL and propose a novel causal feature selection module. This module can be integrated into the policy network and effectively filters out non-causal factors in representations, thereby reducing the influence of spurious correlations between non-causal factors and action predictions. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve robust navigation performance and effective collision avoidance especially in scenarios with unseen backgrounds and obstacles, which significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

Collision Avoidance for Multiple UAVs in Unknown Scenarios with Causal Representation Disentanglement

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has achieved remarkable progress in online path planning tasks for multi-UAV systems. However, existing DRL-based methods often suffer from performance degradation when tackling unseen scenarios, since the non-causal factors in visual representations adversely affect policy learning. To address this issue, we propose a novel representation learning approach, \ie, causal representation disentanglement, which can identify the causal and non-causal factors in representations. After that, we only pass causal factors for subsequent policy learning and thus explicitly eliminate the influence of non-causal factors, which effectively improves the generalization ability of DRL models. Experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve robust navigation performance and effective collision avoidance especially in unseen scenarios, which significantly outperforms existing SOTA algorithms.

CrackCLF: Automatic Pavement Crack Detection based on Closed-Loop Feedback

Automatic pavement crack detection is an important task to ensure the functional performances of pavements during their service life. Inspired by deep learning (DL), the encoder-decoder framework is a powerful tool for crack detection. However, these models are usually open-loop (OL) systems that tend to treat thin cracks as the background. Meanwhile, these models can not automatically correct errors in the prediction, nor can it adapt to the changes of the environment to automatically extract and detect thin cracks. To tackle this problem, we embed closed-loop feedback (CLF) into the neural network so that the model could learn to correct errors on its own, based on generative adversarial networks (GAN). The resulting model is called CrackCLF and includes the front and back ends, i.e. segmentation and adversarial network. The front end with U-shape framework is employed to generate crack maps, and the back end with a multi-scale loss function is used to correct higher-order inconsistencies between labels and crack maps (generated by the front end) to address open-loop system issues. Empirical results show that the proposed CrackCLF outperforms others methods on three public datasets. Moreover, the proposed CLF can be defined as a plug and play module, which can be embedded into different neural network models to improve their performances.

Revisiting Stereo Triangulation in UAV Distance Estimation

Distance estimation plays an important role for path planning and collision avoidance of swarm UAVs. However, the lack of annotated data seriously hinders the related studies. In this work, we build and present a UAVDE dataset for UAV distance estimation, in which distance between two UAVs is obtained by UWB sensors. During experiments, we surprisingly observe that the stereo triangulation cannot stand for UAV scenes. The core reason is the position deviation issue due to long shooting distance and camera vibration, which is common in UAV scenes. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel position correction module, which can directly predict the offset between the observed positions and the actual ones and then perform compensation in stereo triangulation calculation. Besides, to further boost performance on hard samples, we propose a dynamic iterative correction mechanism, which is composed of multiple stacked PCMs and a gating mechanism to adaptively determine whether further correction is required according to the difficulty of data samples. We conduct extensive experiments on UAVDE, and our method can achieve a significant performance improvement over a strong baseline (by reducing the relative difference from 49.4% to 9.8%), which demonstrates its effectiveness and superiority. The code and dataset are available at https://github.com/duanyuan13/PCM.

RHA-Net: An Encoder-Decoder Network with Residual Blocks and Hybrid Attention Mechanisms for Pavement Crack Segmentation

The acquisition and evaluation of pavement surface data play an essential role in pavement condition evaluation. In this paper, an efficient and effective end-to-end network for automatic pavement crack segmentation, called RHA-Net, is proposed to improve the pavement crack segmentation accuracy. The RHA-Net is built by integrating residual blocks (ResBlocks) and hybrid attention blocks into the encoder-decoder architecture. The ResBlocks are used to improve the ability of RHA-Net to extract high-level abstract features. The hybrid attention blocks are designed to fuse both low-level features and high-level features to help the model focus on correct channels and areas of cracks, thereby improving the feature presentation ability of RHA-Net. An image data set containing 789 pavement crack images collected by a self-designed mobile robot is constructed and used for training and evaluating the proposed model. Compared with other state-of-the-art networks, the proposed model achieves better performance and the functionalities of adding residual blocks and hybrid attention mechanisms are validated in a comprehensive ablation study. Additionally, a light-weighted version of the model generated by introducing depthwise separable convolution achieves better a performance and a much faster processing speed with 1/30 of the number of U-Net parameters. The developed system can segment pavement crack in real-time on an embedded device Jetson TX2 (25 FPS). The video taken in real-time experiments is released at https://youtu.be/3XIogk0fiG4.

AGENT: An Adaptive Grouping Entrapping Method of Flocking Systems

This study proposes a distributed algorithm that makes agents' adaptive grouping entrap multiple targets via automatic decision making, smooth flocking, and well-distributed entrapping. Agents make their own decisions about which targets to surround based on environmental information. An improved artificial potential field method is proposed to enable agents to smoothly and naturally change the formation to adapt to the environment. The proposed strategies guarantee that the coordination of swarm agents develops the phenomenon of multiple targets entrapping at the swarm level. We validate the performance of the proposed method using simulation experiments and design indicators for the analysis of these simulation and physical experiments.

VG-Swarm: A Vision-based Gene Regulation Network for UAVs Swarm Behavior Emergence

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) dynamic encirclement is an emerging field with great potential. Researchers often get inspiration from biological systems, either from macro-world like fish schools or bird flocks etc, or from micro-world like gene regulatory networks (GRN). However, most swarm control algorithms rely on centralized control, global information acquisition, and communications among neighboring agents. In this work, we propose a distributed swarm control method based purely on vision and GRN without any direct communications, in which swarm agents of e.g. UAVs can generate an entrapping pattern to encircle an escaping target of UAV based purely on their installed omnidirectional vision sensors. A finite-state-machine (FSM) describing the behavioral model of each drone is also designed so that a swarm of drones can accomplish searching and entrapping of the target collectively in an integrated way. We verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method in various simulation and real-world experiments.

Novel total hip surgery robotic system based on self-localization and optical measurement

This paper presents the development and experimental evaluation of a surgical robotic system for total hip arthroplasty (THA). Although existing robotic systems used in joint replacement surgery have achieved some progresses, the robot arm must be situated accurately at the target position during operation, which depends significantly on the experience of the surgeon. In addition, handheld acetabulum reamers typically exhibit uneven strength and grinding file. Moreover, the lack of techniques to real-time measure femoral neck length may lead to poor outcomes. To tackle these challenges, we propose a real-time traceable optical positioning strategy to reduce unnecessary manual adjustments to the robotic arm during surgery, an end-effector system to stabilise grinding, and an optical probe to provide real-time measurement of the femoral neck length and other parameters used to choose the proper prosthesis. The lengths of the lower limbs are measured as the prosthesis is installed. The experimental evaluation results show that, based on its accuracy, execution ability, and robustness, the proposed surgical robotic system is feasible for THA.

Vision-based Distributed Multi-UAV Collision Avoidance via Deep Reinforcement Learning for Navigation

Online path planning for multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (multi-UAV) systems is considered a challenging task. It needs to ensure collision-free path planning in real-time, especially when the multi-UAV systems can become very crowded on certain occasions. In this paper, we presented a vision-based decentralized collision-avoidance policy for multi-UAV systems, which takes depth images and inertial measurements as sensory inputs and outputs UAV's steering commands. The policy is trained together with the latent representation of depth images using a policy gradient-based reinforcement learning algorithm and autoencoder in the multi-UAV threedimensional workspaces. Each UAV follows the same trained policy and acts independently to reach the goal without colliding or communicating with other UAVs. We validate our policy in various simulated scenarios. The experimental results show that our learned policy can guarantee fully autonomous collision-free navigation for multi-UAV in the three-dimensional workspaces with good robustness and scalability.

CI-Net: Contextual Information for Joint Semantic Segmentation and Depth Estimation

Monocular depth estimation and semantic segmentation are two fundamental goals of scene understanding. Due to the advantages of task interaction, many works study the joint task learning algorithm. However, most existing methods fail to fully leverage the semantic labels, ignoring the provided context structures and only using them to supervise the prediction of segmentation split, which limit the performance of both tasks. In this paper, we propose a network injected with contextual information (CI-Net) to solve the problem. Specifically, we introduce self-attention block in the encoder to generate attention map. With supervision from the ideal attention map created by semantic label, the network is embedded with contextual information so that it could understand scene better and utilize correlated features to make accurate prediction. Besides, a feature sharing module is constructed to make the task-specific features deeply fused and a consistency loss is devised to make the features mutually guided. We evaluate the proposed CI-Net on the NYU-Depth-v2 and SUN-RGBD datasets. The experimental results validate that our proposed CI-Net could effectively improve the accuracy of semantic segmentation and depth estimation.

Genetic U-Net: Automatically Designed Deep Networks for Retinal Vessel Segmentation Using a Genetic Algorithm

Recently, many methods based on hand-designed convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved promising results in automatic retinal vessel segmentation. However, these CNNs remain constrained in capturing retinal vessels in complex fundus images. To improve their segmentation performance, these CNNs tend to have many parameters, which may lead to overfitting and high computational complexity. Moreover, the manual design of competitive CNNs is time-consuming and requires extensive empirical knowledge. Herein, a novel automated design method, called Genetic U-Net, is proposed to generate a U-shaped CNN that can achieve better retinal vessel segmentation but with fewer architecture-based parameters, thereby addressing the above issues. First, we devised a condensed but flexible search space based on a U-shaped encoder-decoder. Then, we used an improved genetic algorithm to identify better-performing architectures in the search space and investigated the possibility of finding a superior network architecture with fewer parameters. The experimental results show that the architecture obtained using the proposed method offered a superior performance with less than 1% of the number of the original U-Net parameters in particular and with significantly fewer parameters than other state-of-the-art models. Furthermore, through in-depth investigation of the experimental results, several effective operations and patterns of networks to generate superior retinal vessel segmentations were identified.

Accurate Retinal Vessel Segmentation via Octave Convolution Neural Network

Retinal vessel segmentation is a crucial step in diagnosing and screening various diseases, including diabetes, ophthalmologic diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, we propose an effective and efficient method for vessel segmentation in color fundus images using encoder-decoder based octave convolution networks. Compared with other convolution networks utilizing standard convolution for feature extraction, the proposed method utilizes octave convolutions and octave transposed convolutions for learning multiple-spatial-frequency features, thus can better capture retinal vasculatures with varying sizes and shapes. To provide the network the capability of learning how to decode multifrequency features, we extend octave convolution and propose a new operation named octave transposed convolution. A novel architecture of convolutional neural network, named as Octave UNet integrating both octave convolutions and octave transposed convolutions is proposed based on the encoder-decoder architecture of UNet, which can generate high resolution vessel segmentation in one single forward feeding without post-processing steps. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed Octave UNet outperforms the baseline UNet achieving better or comparable performance to the state-of-the-art methods with fast processing speed. Specifically, the proposed method achieves 0.9664 / 0.9713 / 0.9759 / 0.9698 accuracy, 0.8374 / 0.8664 / 0.8670 / 0.8076 sensitivity, 0.9790 / 0.9798 / 0.9840 / 0.9831 specificity, 0.8127 / 0.8191 / 0.8313 / 0.7963 F1 score, and 0.9835 / 0.9875 / 0.9905 / 0.9845 Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic curve, on DRIVE, STARE, CHASE_DB1, and HRF datasets, respectively.

Automatic Crack Detection on Road Pavements Using Encoder Decoder Architecture

Inspired by the development of deep learning in computer vision and object detection, the proposed algorithm considers an encoder-decoder architecture with hierarchical feature learning and dilated convolution, named U-Hierarchical Dilated Network (U-HDN), to perform crack detection in an end-to-end method. Crack characteristics with multiple context information are automatically able to learn and perform end-to-end crack detection. Then, a multi-dilation module embedded in an encoder-decoder architecture is proposed. The crack features of multiple context sizes can be integrated into the multi-dilation module by dilation convolution with different dilatation rates, which can obtain much more cracks information. Finally, the hierarchical feature learning module is designed to obtain a multi-scale features from the high to low-level convolutional layers, which are integrated to predict pixel-wise crack detection. Some experiments on public crack databases using 118 images were performed and the results were compared with those obtained with other methods on the same images. The results show that the proposed U-HDN method achieves high performance because it can extract and fuse different context sizes and different levels of feature maps than other algorithms.

Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

The accurate retinal vessel segmentation (RVS) is of great significance to assist doctors in the diagnosis of ophthalmology diseases and other systemic diseases. Manually designing a valid neural network architecture for retinal vessel segmentation requires high expertise and a large workload. In order to improve the performance of vessel segmentation and reduce the workload of manually designing neural network, we propose novel approach which applies neural architecture search (NAS) to optimize an encoder-decoder architecture for retinal vessel segmentation. A modified evolutionary algorithm is used to evolve the architectures of encoder-decoder framework with limited computing resources. The evolved model obtained by the proposed approach achieves top performance among all compared methods on the three datasets, namely DRIVE, STARE and CHASE_DB1, but with much fewer parameters. Moreover, the results of cross-training show that the evolved model is with considerable scalability, which indicates a great potential for clinical disease diagnosis.

Ensemble of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Automatic Pavement Crack Detection and Measurement

Automated pavement crack detection and measurement are important road issues. Agencies have to guarantee the improvement of road safety. Conventional crack detection and measurement algorithms can be extremely time-consuming and low efficiency. Therefore, recently, innovative algorithms have received increased attention from researchers. In this paper, we propose an ensemble of convolutional neural networks (without a pooling layer) based on probability fusion for automated pavement crack detection and measurement. Specifically, an ensemble of convolutional neural networks was employed to identify the structure of small cracks with raw images. Secondly, outputs of the individual convolutional neural network model for the ensemble were averaged to produce the final crack probability value of each pixel, which can obtain a predicted probability map. Finally, the predicted morphological features of the cracks were measured by using the skeleton extraction algorithm. To validate the proposed method, some experiments were performed on two public crack databases (CFD and AigleRN) and the results of the different state-of-the-art methods were compared. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the other methods. For crack measurement, the crack length and width can be measure based on different crack types (complex, common, thin, and intersecting cracks.). The results show that the proposed algorithm can be effectively applied for crack measurement.

An Automatic Design Framework of Swarm Pattern Formation based on Multi-objective Genetic Programming

Most existing swarm pattern formation methods depend on a predefined gene regulatory network (GRN) structure that requires designers' priori knowledge, which is difficult to adapt to complex and changeable environments. To dynamically adapt to the complex and changeable environments, we propose an automatic design framework of swarm pattern formation based on multi-objective genetic programming. The proposed framework does not need to define the structure of the GRN-based model in advance, and it applies some basic network motifs to automatically structure the GRN-based model. In addition, a multi-objective genetic programming (MOGP) combines with NSGA-II, namely MOGP-NSGA-II, to balance the complexity and accuracy of the GRN-based model. In evolutionary process, an MOGP-NSGA-II and differential evolution (DE) are applied to optimize the structures and parameters of the GRN-based model in parallel. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework can effectively evolve some novel GRN-based models, and these GRN-based models not only have a simpler structure and a better performance, but also are robust to the complex and changeable environments.

Object Sorting Using a Global Texture-Shape 3D Feature Descriptor

Object recognition and grasping plays a key role in robotic systems, especially for the autonomous robots to implement object sorting tasks in a warehouse. In this paper, we present a global texture-shape 3D feature descriptor which can be utilized in a system of object recognition and grasping, and can perform object sorting tasks well. Our proposed descriptor stems from the clustered viewpoint feature histogram (CVFH), which relies on the geometrical information of the whole 3D object surface only, and can not perform well in recognizing the objects with similar geometrical information. Therefore, we extend the CVFH descriptor with texture and color information to generate a new global 3D feature descriptor. The proposed descriptor is evaluated in tasks of recognizing and classifying 3D objects by applying multi-class support vector machines (SVM) in both public 3D image dataset and real scenes. The results of evaluation show that the proposed descriptor achieves a significant better performance for object recognition compared with the original CVFH. Then, the proposed descriptor is applied in our object recognition and grasping system, showing that the proposed descriptor helps the system implement the object recognition, object grasping and object sorting tasks well.
