The Creation of AGB Fallback Shells

The possibility that mass ejected during Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stellar evolution phases falls back towards the star has been suggested in applications ranging from the formation of accretion disks to the powering of late-thermal pulses. In this paper, we seek to explicate the properties of fallback flow trajectories from mass-loss events. We focus on a transient phase of mass ejection with sub-escape speeds, followed by a phase of a typical AGB wind. We solve the problem using both hydrodynamic simulations and a simplified one-dimensional analytic model that matches the simulations. For a given set of initial wind characteristics, we find a critical shell velocity that distinguishes between "shell fallback" and "shell escape". We discuss the relevance of our results for both single and binary AGB stars. In particular, we discuss how our results help to frame further studies of fallback as a mechanism for forming the substantial population of observed post-AGB stars with dusty disks.

Holomorphic Poisson Structures and its Cohomology on Nilmanifolds

The subject for investigation in this note is concerned with holomorphic Poisson structures on nilmanifolds with abelian complex structures. As a basic fact, we establish that on such manifolds, the Dolbeault cohomology with coefficients in holomorphic polyvector fields is isomorphic to the cohomology of invariant forms with coefficients in invariant polyvector fields. We then quickly identify the existence of invariant holomorphic Poisson structures. More important, the spectral sequence of the Poisson bi-complex associated to such holomorphic Poisson structure degenerates at $E_2$. We will also provide examples of holomorphic Poisson structures on such manifolds so that the related spectral sequence does not degenerate at $E_2$.

From Atiyah Classes to Homotopy Leibniz Algebras

A celebrated theorem of Kapranov states that the Atiyah class of the tangent bundle of a complex manifold $X$ makes $T_X[-1]$ into a Lie algebra object in $D^+(X)$, the bounded below derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$. Furthermore Kapranov proved that, for a Kähler manifold $X$, the Dolbeault resolution $Ω^{\bullet-1}(T_X^{1,0})$ of $T_X[-1]$ is an $L_\infty$ algebra. In this paper, we prove that Kapranov's theorem holds in much wider generality for vector bundles over Lie pairs. Given a Lie pair $(L,A)$, i.e. a Lie algebroid $L$ together with a Lie subalgebroid $A$, we define the Atiyah class $α_E$ of an $A$-module $E$ (relative to $L$) as the obstruction to the existence of an $A$-compatible $L$-connection on $E$. We prove that the Atiyah classes $α_{L/A}$ and $α_E$ respectively make $L/A[-1]$ and $E[-1]$ into a Lie algebra and a Lie algebra module in the bounded below derived category $D^+(\mathcal{A})$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is the abelian category of left $\mathcal{U}(A)$-modules and $\mathcal{U}(A)$ is the universal enveloping algebra of $A$. Moreover, we produce a homotopy Leibniz algebra and a homotopy Leibniz module stemming from the Atiyah classes of $L/A$ and $E$, and inducing the aforesaid Lie structures in $D^+(\mathcal{A})$.

Deep clustering: Discriminative embeddings for segmentation and separation

We address the problem of acoustic source separation in a deep learning framework we call "deep clustering." Rather than directly estimating signals or masking functions, we train a deep network to produce spectrogram embeddings that are discriminative for partition labels given in training data. Previous deep network approaches provide great advantages in terms of learning power and speed, but previously it has been unclear how to use them to separate signals in a class-independent way. In contrast, spectral clustering approaches are flexible with respect to the classes and number of items to be segmented, but it has been unclear how to leverage the learning power and speed of deep networks. To obtain the best of both worlds, we use an objective function that to train embeddings that yield a low-rank approximation to an ideal pairwise affinity matrix, in a class-independent way. This avoids the high cost of spectral factorization and instead produces compact clusters that are amenable to simple clustering methods. The segmentations are therefore implicitly encoded in the embeddings, and can be "decoded" by clustering. Preliminary experiments show that the proposed method can separate speech: when trained on spectrogram features containing mixtures of two speakers, and tested on mixtures of a held-out set of speakers, it can infer masking functions that improve signal quality by around 6dB. We show that the model can generalize to three-speaker mixtures despite training only on two-speaker mixtures. The framework can be used without class labels, and therefore has the potential to be trained on a diverse set of sound types, and to generalize to novel sources. We hope that future work will lead to segmentation of arbitrary sounds, with extensions to microphone array methods as well as image segmentation and other domains.

A Novel Approach for Clone Group Mapping by using Topic Modeling

Clone group mapping has a very important significance in the evolution of code clone. The topic modeling techniques were applied into code clone firstly and a new clone group mapping method was proposed. The method is very effective for not only Type-1 and Type-2 clone but also Type-3 clone .By making full use of the source text and structure information, topic modeling techniques transform the mapping problem of high-dimensional code space into a low-dimensional topic space, the goal of clone group mapping was indirectly reached by mapping clone group topics. Experiments on four open source software show that the recall and precision are up to 0.99, thus the method can effectively and accurately reach the goal of clone group mapping.

A Hopf algebra associated to a Lie pair

The quotient $L/A[-1]$ of a pair $A\hookrightarrow L$ of Lie algebroids is a Lie algebra object in the derived category $D^b(\mathscr{A})$ of the category $\mathscr{A}$ of left $\mathcal{U}(A)$-modules, the Atiyah class $α_{L/A}$ being its Lie bracket. In this note, we describe the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra object $L/A[-1]$ and we prove that it is a Hopf algebra object in $D^b(\mathscr{A})$.

Holomorphic Poisson Cohomology

A holomorphic Poisson structure induces a deformation of the complex structure as Hitchin's generalized geometry. Its associated cohomology naturally appears as the limit of a spectral sequence of a double complex. The first sheet of this spectral sequence is the Dolbeault cohomology with coefficients in the exterior algebra of the holomorphic tangent bundle. We identify various necessary conditions on compact complex manifolds on which this spectral sequence degenerates on the level of the second sheet. The manifolds to our concern include all compact complex surfaces, Kähler manifolds, and nilmanifolds with abelian complex structures or complex parallelizable manifolds.

Weak Lie 2-bialgebra

We introduce the notion of weak Lie 2-bialgebra. Roughly, a weak Lie 2-bialgebra is a pair of compatible 2-term $L_\infty$-algebra structures on a vector space and its dual. The compatibility condition is described in terms of the big bracket. We prove that (strict) Lie 2-bialgebras are in one-one correspondence with crossed modules of Lie bialgebras.

Poisson 2-groups

We prove a 2-categorical analogue of a classical result of Drinfeld: there is a one-to-one correspondence between connected, simply-connected Poisson Lie 2-groups and Lie 2-bialgebras. In fact, we also prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between connected, simply connected quasi-Poisson 2-groups and quasi-Lie 2-bialgebras. Our approach relies on a "universal lifting theorem" for Lie 2-groups: an isomorphism between the graded Lie algebras of multiplicative polyvector fields on the Lie 2-group on one hand and of polydifferentials on the corresponding Lie 2-algebra on the other hand.

Advanced Asymmetrical Supercapacitors Based on Graphene Hybrid Materials

Supercapacitors operating in aqueous solutions are low cost energy storage devices with high cycling stability and fast charging and discharging capabilities, but have suffered from low energy densities. Here, we grow Ni(OH)2 nanoplates and RuO2 nanoparticles on high quality graphene sheets to maximize the specific capacitances of these materials. We then pair up a Ni(OH)2/graphene electrode with a RuO2/graphene electrode to afford a high performance asymmetrical supercapacitor with high energy and power densities operating in aqueous solutions at a voltage of ~1.5V. The asymmetrical supercapacitor exhibits significantly higher energy densities than symmetrical RuO2-RuO2 supercapacitors and asymmetrical supercapacitors based on either RuO2-carbon or Ni(OH)2-carbon electrode pairs. A high energy density of ~48Wh/kg at a power density of ~0.23kW/kg, and a high power density of ~21kW/kg at an energy density of ~14Wh/kg have been achieved with our Ni(OH)2/graphene and RuO2/graphene asymmetrical supercapacitor. Thus, pairing up metal-oxide/graphene and metal-hydroxide/graphene hybrid materials for asymmetrical supercapacitors represents a new approach to high performance energy storage.

Near-Infrared Fluorescence Enhanced (NIR-FE) Molecular Imaging of Live Cells on Gold Substrates

Low quantum yields of near infrared (NIR) fluorophores have limited their capabilities as imaging probes in a transparent, low background imaging window. Here for the first time we reported near-infrared fluorescence enhance (NIR-FE) cell imaging using nanostructured Au substrate, which was employed as a general platform for both single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and organic fluorescent labels in the NIR region. Fluorescence intensity, as well as cell targeting specificity, was greatly improved by this novel imaging technique. With NIR-FE imaging, we were able to image SWNT-stained cells at short exposure time of 300ms, and push the detectable limit of SWNT staining of cells down to an ultralow concentration of ~50 pM. Further, different degrees of fluorescence enhancement for endocytosed, intracellular SWNTs vs. nanotubes on the cell membrane at the cell/gold interface were observed, suggesting the possibility of using this technique to track the transmembrane behavior of NIR fluorophores.

On Double Vector Bundles

In this paper, we construct a category of short exact sequences of vector bundles and prove that it is equivalent to the category of double vector bundles. Moreover, operations on double vector bundles can be transferred to operations on the corresponding short exact sequences. In particular, we study the duality theory of double vector bundles in term of the corresponding short exact sequences. Examples including the jet bundle and the Atiyah algebroid are discussed.

Evolution of Cooperation among Mobile Agents

We study the effects of mobility on the evolution of cooperation among mobile players, which imitate collective motion of biological flocks and interact with neighbors within a prescribed radius $R$. Adopting the prisoner's dilemma game and the snowdrift game as metaphors, we find that cooperation can be maintained and even enhanced for low velocities and small payoff parameters, when compared with the case that all agents do not move. But such enhancement of cooperation is largely determined by the value of $R$, and for modest values of $R$, there is an optimal value of velocity to induce the maximum cooperation level. Besides, we find that intermediate values of $R$ or initial population densities are most favorable for cooperation, when the velocity is fixed. Depending on the payoff parameters, the system can reach an absorbing state of cooperation when the snowdrift game is played. Our findings may help understanding the relations between individual mobility and cooperative behavior in social systems.

Dirac structures of omni-Lie algebroids

Omni-Lie algebroids are generalizations of Alan Weinstein's omni-Lie algebras. A Dirac structure in an omni-Lie algebroid $\dev E\oplus \jet E$ is necessarily a Lie algebroid together with a representation on $E$. We study the geometry underlying these Dirac structures in the light of reduction theory. In particular, we prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between reducible Dirac structures and projective Lie algebroids in $\huaT=TM\oplus E$; we establish the relation between the normalizer $N_{L}$ of a reducible Dirac structure $L$ and the derivation algebra $\Der(\pomnib (L))$ of the projective Lie algebroid $\pomnib (L)$; we study the cohomology group $\mathrm{H}^\bullet(L,ρ_{L})$ and the relation between $N_{L}$ and $\mathrm{H}^1(L,ρ_{L})$; we describe Lie bialgebroids using the adjoint representation; we study the deformation of a Dirac structure $L$, which is related with $\mathrm{H}^2(L,ρ_{L})$.

E-Courant algebroids

In this paper, we introduce the notion of $E$-Courant algebroids, where $E$ is a vector bundle. It is a kind of generalized Courant algebroid and contains Courant algebroids, Courant-Jacobi algebroids and omni-Lie algebroids as its special cases. We explore novel phenomena exhibited by $E$-Courant algebroids and provide many examples. We study the automorphism groups of omni-Lie algebroids and classify the isomorphism classes of exact $E$-Courant algebroids. In addition, we introduce the concepts of $E$-Lie bialgebroids and Manin triples.

TiO2 Nanocrystals Grown on Graphene as Advanced Photocatalytic Hybrid Materials

Graphene/TiO2 nanocrystals hybrid is successfully prepared by directly growing TiO2 nanocrystals on graphene oxide (GO) sheets. The direct growth of nanocrystals on GO sheets was achieved by a two-step method, in which TiO2 was coated on GO sheets by hydrolysis first and crystallized into anatase nanocrystals by hydrothermal treatment in second step. Slow hydrolysis reaction through the use of EtOH/H2O mixed solvents and addition of H2SO4 allows the selectively growing TiO2 on GO and suppressing free growth in solution. The method offers easy access to the GO/TiO2 nanocrystals hybrid with well controlled coating and strong interactions between TiO2 and the underlying GO sheets. The strong coupling could lead to advanced hybrid materials for various applications including photocatalysis. The prepared graphene/TiO2 nanocrystals hybrid has demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity in degradation of rhodamine B over other TiO2 materials, showing an impressive 3-fold photocatalytic enhancement over P25. It is expected that the hybrid material could also be promising for various other applications including lithium ion battery where strong electrical coupling to TiO2 nanoparticles is essential.

Evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma Game in Flocks

We investigate an evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game among self-driven agents, where collective motion of biological flocks is imitated through averaging directions of neighbors. Depending on the temptation to defect and the velocity at which agents move, we find that cooperation can not only be maintained in such a system but there exists an optimal size of interaction neighborhood, which can induce the maximum cooperation level. When compared with the case that all agents do not move, cooperation can even be enhanced by the mobility of individuals, provided that the velocity and the size of neighborhood are not too large. Besides, we find that the system exhibits aggregation behavior, and cooperators may coexist with defectors at equilibrium.

Multiplexed five-color molecular imaging of cancer cells and tumor tissues with carbon nanotube Raman tags in the near-infrared

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with five different C13/C12 isotope compositions and well-separated Raman peaks have been synthesized and conjugated to five targeting ligands in order to impart molecular specificity. Multiplexed Raman imaging of live cells has been carried out by highly specific staining of cells with a five-color mixture of SWNTs. Ex vivo multiplexed Raman imaging of tumor samples uncovers a surprising up-regulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on LS174T colon cancer cells from cell culture to in vivo tumor growth. This is the first time five-color multiplexed molecular imaging has been performed in the near-infrared (NIR) region under a single laser excitation. Near zero interfering background of imaging is achieved due to the sharp Raman peaks unique to nanotubes over the low, smooth autofluorescence background of biological species.
