DECK: Model Hardening for Defending Pervasive Backdoors

Pervasive backdoors are triggered by dynamic and pervasive input perturbations. They can be intentionally injected by attackers or naturally exist in normally trained models. They have a different nature from the traditional static and localized backdoors that can be triggered by perturbing a small input area with some fixed pattern, e.g., a patch with solid color. Existing defense techniques are highly effective for traditional backdoors. However, they may not work well for pervasive backdoors, especially regarding backdoor removal and model hardening. In this paper, we propose a novel model hardening technique against pervasive backdoors, including both natural and injected backdoors. We develop a general pervasive attack based on an encoder-decoder architecture enhanced with a special transformation layer. The attack can model a wide range of existing pervasive backdoor attacks and quantify them by class distances. As such, using the samples derived from our attack in adversarial training can harden a model against these backdoor vulnerabilities. Our evaluation on 9 datasets with 15 model structures shows that our technique can enlarge class distances by 59.65% on average with less than 1% accuracy degradation and no robustness loss, outperforming five hardening techniques such as adversarial training, universal adversarial training, MOTH, etc. It can reduce the attack success rate of six pervasive backdoor attacks from 99.06% to 1.94%, surpassing seven state-of-the-art backdoor removal techniques.

Do Deep Neural Networks Always Perform Better When Eating More Data?

Data has now become a shortcoming of deep learning. Researchers in their own fields share the thinking that "deep neural networks might not always perform better when they eat more data," which still lacks experimental validation and a convincing guiding theory. Here to fill this lack, we design experiments from Identically Independent Distribution(IID) and Out of Distribution(OOD), which give powerful answers. For the purpose of guidance, based on the discussion of results, two theories are proposed: under IID condition, the amount of information determines the effectivity of each sample, the contribution of samples and difference between classes determine the amount of sample information and the amount of class information; under OOD condition, the cross-domain degree of samples determine the contributions, and the bias-fitting caused by irrelevant elements is a significant factor of cross-domain. The above theories provide guidance from the perspective of data, which can promote a wide range of practical applications of artificial intelligence.

Constrained Optimization with Dynamic Bound-scaling for Effective NLPBackdoor Defense

We develop a novel optimization method for NLPbackdoor inversion. We leverage a dynamically reducing temperature coefficient in the softmax function to provide changing loss landscapes to the optimizer such that the process gradually focuses on the ground truth trigger, which is denoted as a one-hot value in a convex hull. Our method also features a temperature rollback mechanism to step away from local optimals, exploiting the observation that local optimals can be easily deter-mined in NLP trigger inversion (while not in general optimization). We evaluate the technique on over 1600 models (with roughly half of them having injected backdoors) on 3 prevailing NLP tasks, with 4 different backdoor attacks and 7 architectures. Our results show that the technique is able to effectively and efficiently detect and remove backdoors, outperforming 4 baseline methods.

An Indoor Crowd Movement Trajectory Benchmark Dataset

In recent years, technologies of indoor crowd positioning and movement data analysis have received widespread attention in the fields of reliability management, indoor navigation, and crowd behavior monitoring. However, only a few indoor crowd movement trajectory datasets are available to the public, thus restricting the development of related research and application. This paper contributes a new benchmark dataset of indoor crowd movement trajectories. This dataset records the movements of over 5000 participants at a three day large academic conference in a two story indoor venue. The conference comprises varied activities, such as academic seminars, business exhibitions, a hacking contest, interviews, tea breaks, and a banquet. The participants are divided into seven types according to participation permission to the activities. Some of them are involved in anomalous events, such as loss of items, unauthorized accesses, and equipment failures, forming a variety of spatial temporal movement patterns. In this paper, we first introduce the scenario design, entity and behavior modeling, and data generator of the dataset. Then, a detailed ground truth of the dataset is presented. Finally, we describe the process and experience of applying the dataset to the contest of ChinaVis Data Challenge 2019. Evaluation results of the 75 contest entries and the feedback from 359 contestants demonstrate that the dataset has satisfactory completeness, and usability, and can effectively identify the performance of methods, technologies, and systems for indoor trajectory analysis.

Generative Reversible Data Hiding by Image to Image Translation via GANs

The traditional reversible data hiding technique is based on cover image modification which inevitably leaves some traces of rewriting that can be more easily analyzed and attacked by the warder. Inspired by the cover synthesis steganography based generative adversarial networks, in this paper, a novel generative reversible data hiding scheme (GRDH) by image translation is proposed. First, an image generator is used to obtain a realistic image, which is used as an input to the image-to-image translation model with CycleGAN. After image translation, a stego image with different semantic information will be obtained. The secret message and the original input image can be recovered separately by a well-trained message extractor and the inverse transform of the image translation. Experimental results have verified the effectiveness of the scheme.

Generative Steganography by Sampling

In this paper, a novel data-driven information hiding scheme called generative steganography by sampling (GSS) is proposed. Unlike in traditional modification-based steganography, in our method the stego image is directly sampled by a powerful generator: no explicit cover is used. Both parties share a secret key used for message embedding and extraction. The Jensen-Shannon divergence is introduced as a new criterion for evaluating the security of generative steganography. Based on these principles, we propose a simple practical generative steganography method that uses semantic image inpainting. The message is written in advance to an uncorrupted region that needs to be retained in the corrupted image. Then, the corrupted image with the secret message is fed into a Generator trained by a generative adversarial network (GAN) for semantic completion. Message loss and prior loss terms are proposed for penalizing message extraction error and unrealistic stego image. In our design, we first train a generator whose training target is the generation of new data samples from the same distribution as that of existing training data. Next, for the trained generator, backpropagation to the message and prior loss are introduced to optimize the coding of the input noise data for the generator. The presented experiments demonstrate the potential of the proposed framework based on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the generated stego images.

Recent Advances of Image Steganography with Generative Adversarial Networks

In the past few years, the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) which proposed in 2014 has achieved great success. GAN has achieved many research results in the field of computer vision and natural language processing. Image steganography is dedicated to hiding secret messages in digital images, and has achieved the purpose of covert communication. Recently, research on image steganography has demonstrated great potential for using GAN and neural networks. In this paper we review different strategies for steganography such as cover modification, cover selection and cover synthesis by GANs, and discuss the characteristics of these methods as well as evaluation metrics and provide some possible future research directions in image steganography.

Seizure Detection using Least EEG Channels by Deep Convolutional Neural Network

This work aims to develop an end-to-end solution for seizure onset detection. We design the SeizNet, a Convolutional Neural Network for seizure detection. To compare SeizNet with traditional machine learning approach, a baseline classifier is implemented using spectrum band power features with Support Vector Machines (BPsvm). We explore the possibility to use the least number of channels for accurate seizure detection by evaluating SeizNet and BPsvm approaches using all channels and two channels settings respectively. EEG Data is acquired from 29 pediatric patients admitted to KK Woman's and Children's Hospital who were diagnosed as typical absence seizures. We conduct leave-one-out cross validation for all subjects. Using full channel data, BPsvm yields a sensitivity of 86.6\% and 0.84 false alarm (per hour) while SeizNet yields overall sensitivity of 95.8 \% with 0.17 false alarm. More interestingly, two channels seizNet outperforms full channel BPsvm with a sensitivity of 93.3\% and 0.58 false alarm. We further investigate interpretability of SeizNet by decoding the filters learned along convolutional layers. Seizure-like characteristics can be clearly observed in the filters from third and forth convolutional layers.

Digital Cardan Grille: A Modern Approach for Information Hiding

In this paper, a new framework for construction of Cardan grille for information hiding is proposed. Based on the semantic image inpainting technique, the stego image are driven by secret messages directly. A mask called Digital Cardan Grille (DCG) for determining the hidden location is introduced to hide the message. The message is written to the corrupted region that needs to be filled in the corrupted image in advance. Then the corrupted image with secret message is feeded into a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for semantic completion. The adversarial game not only reconstruct the corrupted image , but also generate a stego image which contains the logic rationality of image content. The experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

Study on flexible and organizable time-resolved measurement system and technology for multi-pulsed electron beam parameter

The proof test and debugging of the multi-pulsed electron accelerator, Dragon-2,requires a thorough comprehension of the quality of the beams. This puts forward a rigid requirement on the measurement system that it should have the ability that not only differentiates the three pulses on the whole but also tells the details of each pulse. In the measurements, beam energy is converted by a target to the Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) light, the information carried by which provides a good approach to measure beam profile and divergence simultaneously. Combining with this characteristic of OTR light, the concept of dual-imaging method is adopted in the design of optical imaging system. To avoid interference of the system optical parameters with one another, the original system is separated into two parts by functions, one for beam profile measurements and the other for divergence measurements. Correspondingly a splitter is interposed immediately after the OTR target which splits the light into two parts in perpendicular directions, one part forming a beam spot, and the remaining becoming polarized through a polarizer and imaged by an OTR lens and forming a beam divergence pattern. Again the use of splitters helps the light beam enter different framing camera for different use. With a time resolution of 2ns, the system can provide 8 frames of beam details within any one of the three pulses,at the same time as acquiring the quality of the three pulses on the whole.

Lifshitz scaling effects on holographic paramagnetism/ferromagneism phase transition

In the probe limit, we investigate holographic paramagnetism-ferromagnetism phase transition in the four-dimensional (4D) and five-dimensional(5D) Lifshitz black holes by means of numerical and semi-analytical methods, which is realized by introducing a massive 2-form field coupled to the Maxwell field. We find that the Lifshitz dynamical exponent $z$ contributes evidently to magnetic moment and hysteresis loop of single magnetic domain quantitatively not qualitatively. Concretely, in the case without external magnetic field, the spontaneous magnetization and ferromagnetic phase transition happen when the temperature gets low enough, and the critical exponent for the magnetic moment is always $1/2$, which is in agreement with the result from mean field theory. And the increasing $z$ enhances the phase transition and increases the DC resistivity which behaves as the colossal magnetic resistance effect in some materials. Furthermore, in the presence of the external magnetic field, the magnetic susceptibility satisfies the Cure-Weiss law with a general $z$. But the increase of $z$ will result in shortening the period of the external magnetic field.

Modified f(G) gravity models with curvature-matter coupling

A modified f(G) gravity model with coupling between matter and geometry is proposed, which is described by the product of the Lagrange density of the matter and an arbitrary function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. The field equations and the equations of motion corresponding to this model show the non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor, the presence of an extra-force acting on test particles and the non-geodesic motion. Moreover, the energy conditions and the stability criterion at de Sitter point in the modified f(G) gravity models with curvature-matter coupling are derived, which can degenerate to the well-known energy conditions in general relativity. Furthermore, in order to get some insight on the meaning of these energy conditions, we apply them to the specific models of f(G) gravity and the corresponding constraints on the models are given. In addition, the conditions and the candidate for late-time cosmic accelerated expansion in the modified f(G) gravity are studied by means of conditions of power-law expansion and the equation of state of matter less than -1/ 3 .
