Quantum chaos, scrambling and operator growth in $T\bar{T}$ deformed SYK models

In this work, we investigate the quantum chaos in various $T\bar{T}$-deformed SYK models with finite $N$, including the SYK$_4$, the supersymmetric SYK$_4$, and the SYK$_2$ models. We numerically study the evolution of the spectral form factor (SFF), the out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC), and the Krylov complexity. We find that the characteristic evolution of the SFF, OTOC and K-complexity of both the SYK$_4$ and SSYK$_4$ models remains unchanged under the deformation, which implies that the properties of quantum chaos is preserved. We also identify a many-body localization behavior in the deformed SYK$_2$ model.

Black holes Entangled by Radiation

We construct three models to describe the scenario where two eternal black holes are separated by a flat space, and can eventually be entangled by exchanging radiations. In the doubly holographic setup, we compute the entanglement entropy and the mutual information among the subsystems and obtain the dynamic phase structure of the entanglement. The formation of entanglement between the two black holes is delayed by the space where the radiations must travel through. Finally, if the two black holes exchange sufficient Hawking modes, the final state is characterized by a connected entanglement wedge; otherwise, the final entanglement wedge contains two separated islands. In the former case, the entanglement wedge of the two black holes forms at the time scale of the size of the flat space between them. While in both cases, unitarity of the evolution is preserved. When the sizes of two black holes are not equal, we observe a loss of entanglement between the smaller black hole and the radiation at late times. In the field theory side, we consider two Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) clusters coupled to a Majorana chain, which resemble two black holes connected by a radiation region. We numerically compute the same entanglement measures, and obtain similar phase structures as the bulk results. In general, a time delay of the entanglement between the two SYK clusters is found in cases with a long Majorana chain. In particular, when the two SYK clusters are different in size, similar entanglement loss between the smaller SYK cluster and the Majorana chain is observed. Finally, we investigate a chain model composed of EPR clusters with particle exchanges between neighboring clusters, and reproduce the features of entanglement observed in the other models.

Hall viscosity and hydrodynamic inverse Nernst effect in graphene

Motivated by Hall viscosity measurements in graphene sheets, we study hydrodynamic transport of electrons in a channel of finite width in external electric and magnetic fields. We consider electric charge densities varying from close to the Dirac point up to the Fermi liquid regime. We find two competing contributions to the hydrodynamic Hall and inverse Nernst signals that originate from the Hall viscous and Lorentz forces. This competition leads to a non-linear dependence of the full signals on the magnetic field and even a cancellation at different critical field values for both signals. In particular, the hydrodynamic inverse Nernst signal in the Fermi liquid regime is dominated by the Hall viscous contribution. We further show that a finite channel width leads to a suppression of the Lorenz ratio, while the magnetic field enhances this ratio. All of these effects are predicted in parameter regimes accessible in experiments.

$T\bar T$ deformation on multiquantum mechanics and regenesis

We study the $T\bar T$ deformation on multiquantum mechanical systems. By introducing dynamical coordinate transformation, we reformulate the one-dimensional $T\bar T$ deformation of generic quantum mechanical systems, which is consistent with the previous proposal in the literature. We further study the thermo-field-double state under the $T\bar T$ deformation on these systems, which include the conformal quantum mechanical system, the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, and the model satisfying eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We find common regenesis phenomena in which the signal injected into one local system can regenerate from the other local system. From the $AdS_2/CFT_1$ perspective, we study the deformation of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity governed by Schwarzian action and find that these regenesis phenomena are realized by exchanging boundaries graviton via the nonlocal $T\bar T$ coupling.

Towards Explicit Discrete Holography: Aperiodic Spin Chains from Hyperbolic Tilings

We propose a new example of discrete holography that provides a new step towards establishing the AdS/CFT duality for discrete spaces. A class of boundary Hamiltonians is obtained in a natural way from regular tilings of the hyperbolic Poincaré disk, via an inflation rule that allows to construct the tiling using concentric layers of tiles. The models in this class are aperiodic spin chains, whose sequences of couplings are obtained from the bulk inflation rule. We explicitly choose the aperiodic XXZ spin chain with spin 1/2 degrees of freedom as an example. The properties of this model are studied by using strong disorder renormalization group techniques, which provide a tensor network construction for the ground state of this spin chain. This can be regarded as discrete bulk reconstruction. Moreover we compute the entanglement entropy in this setup in two different ways: a discretization of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and a generalization of the standard computation for the boundary aperiodic Hamiltonian. For both approaches, a logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy in the subsystem size is identified. The coefficients, i.e. the effective central charges, depend on the bulk discretization parameters in both cases, albeit in a different way.

Reflected Entropy in Double Holography

Recently, the reflected entropy is proposed in holographic approach to describe the entanglement of a bipartite quantum system in a mixed state, which is identified as the area of the reflected minimal surface inside the entanglement wedge. In this paper, we study the reflected entropy in the doubly holographic setup, which contains the degrees of freedom of quantum matter in the bulk. In this context, we propose a notion of quantum entanglement wedge cross-section, which may describe the reflected entropy with higher-order quantum corrections. We numerically compute the reflected entropy in pure AdS background and black hole background in four dimensions, respectively. In general, the reflected entropy contains the contribution from the geometry on the brane and the contribution from the CFT. We compute their proportion for different Newton constants and find that their behaviors are in agreement with the results based on the semi-classical gravity and the correlation of CFT coupled to the bath CFT.

Island in Charged Black Holes

We study the information paradox for the eternal black hole with charges on a doubly-holographic model in general dimensions, where the charged black hole on a Planck brane is coupled to the baths on the conformal boundaries. In the case of weak tension, the brane can be treated as a probe such that its backreaction to the bulk is negligible. We analytically calculate the entanglement entropy of the radiation and obtain the Page curve with the presence of an island on the brane. For the near-extremal black holes, the growth rate is linear in the temperature. Taking both Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati term and nonzero tension into account, we obtain the numerical solution with backreaction in four-dimensional spacetime and find the quantum extremal surface at $t=0$. To guarantee that a Page curve can be obtained in general cases, we propose two strategies to impose enough degrees of freedom on the brane such that the black hole information paradox can be properly described by the doubly-holographic setup.

Complexity growth of operators in the SYK model and in JT gravity

The concepts of operator size and computational complexity play important roles in the study of quantum chaos and holographic duality because they help characterize the structure of time-evolving Heisenberg operators. It is particularly important to understand how these microscopically defined measures of complexity are related to notions of complexity defined in terms of a dual holographic geometry, such as complexity-volume (CV) duality. Here we study partially entangled thermal states in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and their dual description in terms of operators inserted in the interior of a black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We compare a microscopic definition of complexity in the SYK model known as K-complexity to calculations using CV duality in JT gravity and find that both quantities show an exponential-to-linear growth behavior. We also calculate the growth of operator size under time evolution and find connections between size and complexity. While the notion of operator size saturates at the scrambling time, our study suggests that complexity, which is well defined in both quantum systems and gravity theories, can serve as a useful measure of operator evolution at both early and late times.

Wormholes and the Thermodynamic Arrow of Time

In classical thermodynamics, heat cannot spontaneously pass from a colder system to a hotter system, which is called the thermodynamic arrow of time. However, if the initial states are entangled, the direction of the thermodynamic arrow of time may not be guaranteed. Here we take the thermofield double state at $0+1$ dimension as the initial state and assume its gravity duality to be the eternal black hole in AdS$_2$ space. We make the temperature difference between the two sides by changing the Hamiltonian. We turn on proper interaction between the two sides and calculate the changes in energy and entropy. The energy transfer, as well as the thermodynamic arrow of time, are mainly determined by the competition between two channels: thermal diffusion and anomalous heat flow. The former is not related to the wormhole and obeys the thermodynamic arrow of time; the latter is related to the wormhole and reverses the thermodynamic arrow of time, i.e. transferring energy from the colder side to the hotter side at the cost of entanglement consumption. Finally, we find that the thermal diffusion wins the competition, and the whole thermodynamic arrow of time has not been reversed.

Holographic Superfluid Solitons with Backreaction

Solitons are important nonperturbative excitations in superfluids. For holographic superfluids, we numerically construct dark solitons that have the symmetry-restored phase at their core. A central point is that we include the gravitational back-reaction of the matter fields, which becomes important at low temperatures. We study in detail the properties of these solitons under variation of the back-reaction strength via tuning the gravitational constant. In particular, the depletion fraction of the particle number density at the core of the solitons is carefully investigated. In agreement with the probe-limit analysis, the depletion fraction shows the same qualitative behavior as in Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory, even if the back-reaction is included. We find that the depletion decreases with increasing back-reaction strength. Moreover, the inclusion of back-reaction enables us to obtain the effective energy density of solitons within holography, which together with an evaluation of the surface tension leads to a simple physical explanation for the snake instability of dark solitons.

Violation of the viscosity/entropy bound in translationally invariant non-Fermi liquids

The shear viscosity is an important characterization of how a many-body system behaves like a fluid. We study the shear viscosity in a strongly interacting solvable model, consisting of coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) islands. As temperature is lowered, the model exhibits a crossover from an incoherent metal with local criticality to a marginal fermi liquid. We find that while the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in the marginal Fermi liquid regime satisfies a Kovtun-Son-Starinets (KSS) like bound, it can strongly violate the KSS bound in a robust temperature range of the incoherent metal regime, implying a nearly perfect fluidity of the coupled local critical SYK model. Furthermore, this model also provides the first translationally invariant example violating the KSS bound with known gauge-gravity correspondence.

Entanglement Entropy of Annulus in Holographic Thermalization

The thermalization process of the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) of an annular domain is investigated over the Vaidya-AdS geometry. We numerically determine the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) surface which may be a hemi-torus or two disks, depending on the ratio of the inner radius to the outer radius of the annulus. More importantly, for some fixed ratio of two radii, it undergoes a phase transition or double phase transitions from a hemi-torus configuration to a two-disk configuration, or vice versa, during the thermalization. The occurrence of various phase transitions is determined by the ratio of two radii of the annulus. The rate of entanglement growth is also investigated during the thermal quench. The local maximal rate of entanglement growth occurs in the region with double phase transitions. Finally, if the quench process is fairly slow which may be controlled by the thickness of null shell, the region with double phase transitions vanishes.

Quantum error correction and entanglement spectrum in tensor networks

A sort of planar tensor networks with tensor constraints is investigated as a model for holography. We study the greedy algorithm generated by tensor constraints and propose the notion of critical protection (CP) against the action of greedy algorithm. For given tensor constraints, a CP tensor chain can be defined. We further find that the ability of quantum error correction (QEC), the non-flatness of entanglement spectrum (ES) and the correlation function can be quantitatively evaluated by the geometric structure of CP tensor chain. Four classes of tensor networks with different properties of entanglement is discussed. Thanks to tensor constraints and CP, the correlation function is reduced into a bracket of Matrix Production State and the result agrees with the one in conformal field theory.

Tensor chain and constraints in tensor networks

This paper accompanies with our recent work on quantum error correction (QEC) and entanglement spectrum (ES) in tensor networks (arXiv:1806.05007). We propose a general framework for planar tensor network state with tensor constraints as a model for $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence, which could be viewed as a generalization of hyperinvariant tensor networks recently proposed by Evenbly. We elaborate our proposal on tensor chains in a tensor network by tiling $H^2$ space and provide a diagrammatical description for general multi-tensor constraints in terms of tensor chains, which forms a generalized greedy algorithm. The behavior of tensor chains under the action of greedy algorithm is investigated in detail. In particular, for a given set of tensor constraints, a critically protected (CP) tensor chain can be figured out and evaluated by its average reduced interior angle. We classify tensor networks according to their ability of QEC and the flatness of ES. The corresponding geometric description of critical protection over the hyperbolic space is also given.

Quantum criticality and duality in the SYK/AdS$_2$ chain

We show that the quantum critical point (QCP) between a diffusive metal and ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) phases in the SYK chain has a gravitational description corresponding to the double-trace deformation in an AdS$_2$ chain. Specifically, by studying a double-trace deformation of a $Z_2$ scalar in an AdS$_2$ chain where the $Z_2$ scalar is dual to the order parameter in the SYK chain, we find that the susceptibility and renormalization group equation describing the QCP in the SYK chain can be exactly reproduced in the holographic model. Our results suggest that the infrared geometry in the gravity theory dual to the diffusive metal of the SYK chain is also an AdS$_2$ chain. We further show that the transition in SYK model captures universal information about double-trace deformation in generic black holes with near horizon AdS$_2$ spacetime.

Holographic Butterfly Effect and Diffusion in Quantum Critical Region

We investigate the butterfly effect and charge diffusion near the quantum phase transition in holographic approach. We argue that their criticality is controlled by the holographic scaling geometry with deformations induced by a relevant operator at finite temperature. Specifically, in the quantum critical region controlled by a single fixed point, the butterfly velocity decreases when deviating from the critical point. While, in the non-critical region, the behavior of the butterfly velocity depends on the specific phase at low temperature. Moreover, in the holographic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, the universal behavior of the butterfly velocity is absent. Finally, the tendency of our holographic results matches with the numerical results of Bose-Hubbard model. A comparison between our result and that in the $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model is also given.

Holographic Shear Viscosity in Hyperscaling Violating Theories without Translational Invariance

In this paper we investigate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$, in hyperscaling violating geometry with lattice structure. We show that the scaling relation with hyperscaling violation gives a strong constraint to the mass of graviton and usually leads to a power law of temperature, $η/s\sim T^κ$. We find the exponent $κ$ can be greater than two such that the new bound for viscosity raised in arXiv:1601.02757 is violated. Our above observation is testified by constructing specific solutions with UV completion in various holographic models. Finally, we compare the boundedness of $κ$ with the behavior of entanglement entropy and conjecture a relation between them.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy Close to Quantum Phase Transitions

We investigate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) of a strip geometry in four dimensional Q-lattice backgrounds, which exhibit metal-insulator transitions in the dual field theory. Remarkably, we find that the HEE always displays a peak in the vicinity of the quantum critical points. Our model provides the first direct evidence that the HEE can be used to characterize the quantum phase transition (QPT). We also conjecture that the maximization behavior of HEE at quantum critical points would be universal in general holographic models.
