A Machine Learning Paradigm for Studying Pictorial Realism: Are Constable's Clouds More Real than His Contemporaries?

The British landscape painter John Constable is considered foundational for the Realist movement in 19th-century European painting. Constable's painted skies, in particular, were seen as remarkably accurate by his contemporaries, an impression shared by many viewers today. Yet, assessing the accuracy of realist paintings like Constable's is subjective or intuitive, even for professional art historians, making it difficult to say with certainty what set Constable's skies apart from those of his contemporaries. Our goal is to contribute to a more objective understanding of Constable's realism. We propose a new machine-learning-based paradigm for studying pictorial realism in an explainable way. Our framework assesses realism by measuring the similarity between clouds painted by artists noted for their skies, like Constable, and photographs of clouds. The experimental results of cloud classification show that Constable approximates more consistently than his contemporaries the formal features of actual clouds in his paintings. The study, as a novel interdisciplinary approach that combines computer vision and machine learning, meteorology, and art history, is a springboard for broader and deeper analyses of pictorial realism.

Near-field radiative heat transfer between rough surfaces modeled using effective media with gradient distribution of dielectric function

Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between rough surfaces, due to its widespread presence in engineering practice of near-field energy utilization, requires indepth studies, especially from the perspective of physical mechanism. In this paper, an effective multilayer model is built to approach the NFRHT between random rough surfaces of silicon carbide (SiC). Using the effective medium theory (EMT), the effective dielectric function of each layer is obtained, which forms a gradient distribution of dielectric function along the depth of the medium. The influence of the effective dielectric function on surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) is analyzed, showing that the effective layers with small filling fraction of SiC feature lower SPhP resonance frequencies than SiC bulk. The coupling of SPhPs from the gradient distribution of dielectric function produces new surface modes that dominates the NFRHT. Investigation on the effect of root mean square height (RMS height, σ) reveals that the peaks of local density of states (LDOS) and spectral heat flux are red-shifted as σ increases, while the spectral heat flux below the peak frequency gets larger. This can be attributed to the coupling of SPhPs inside the rough layer. We also found the total net heat flux between rough surfaces separated by an average distance exceeds that between smooth plates and increases with increasing σ, which offer a new way to enhance NFRHT. This work provides a reference for the simulation and understanding of the NFRHT between rough surfaces.

Collective Near-Field Thermal Emission from Polaritonic Nanoparticle Arrays

The spectral characteristics of near-field thermal emission from nanoparticle arrays are explained by comparison to the dispersions for propagating modes. Using the coupled dipole model, we analytically calculate the spectral emission from single particles, chains, planes, and 3D arrays of SiO2 and SiC. We show that the differences in their spectra are due to the existence or absence of propagating surface phonon polariton modes and that the emission is dominated by these modes when they are present. This work paves the way for understanding and control of near-field radiation in nanofluids, nanoparticle beds, and certain metamaterials.
