Generalised Fermat equations in dense variables over finite fields and rings

Let $A$ be a sufficiently dense subset of a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ or a finite, cyclic ring $\mathbb Z/ N\mathbb Z$. Assuming that $q$ and $N$ have no small prime divisors, we show that generalised Fermat equations have the expected number of solutions over $A$. We further show that our density threshold is optimal. Our proofs involve average Fourier decay for Bohr sets, mixed character sum bounds, equidistribution of polynomial sequences, popular Cauchy--Davenport lemmas, and a regularity-type lemma due to Semchankau.

Uniform nonlinear Szemerédi theorem for corners in finite fields

Let $P(t),Q(t)\in \mathbb{Q}(t)$ be rational functions such that $P(t),Q(t)$ and the constant function $1$ are linearly independent over $\mathbb{Q}$, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of the corner configurations $(x_1,x_2),(x_1+P(y),x_2),(x_1,x_2+Q(y))$ in the subsets of $\mathbb{F}_p^2$.

A study guide for the $\ell^2$ decoupling theorem for the paraboloid

This article serves as a study guide for the $\ell^2$ decoupling theorem for the paraboloid originally proved by Bourgain and Demeter. Given its popularity and importance, many expositions about the $\ell^2$ decoupling theorem already exist. Our study guide is intended to complement and combine these existing resources in order to provide a more gentle introduction to the subject.

Three term rational function progressions in finite fields

Let $F(t),G(t)\in \mathbb{Q}(t)$ be rational functions such that $F(t),G(t)$ and the constant function $1$ are linearly independent over $\mathbb{Q}$, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of the three term rational function progressions of the form $x,x+F(y),x+G(y)$ in subsets of $\mathbb{F}_p$. The main new ingredient is an algebraic geometry version of PET induction that bypasses Weyl's differencing. This answers a question of Bourgain and Chang.

Quasistatic magnetoconvection: Heat transport enhancement and boundary layer crossing

We present a numerical study of quasistatic magnetoconvection in a cubic Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection cell subjected to a vertical external magnetic field. For moderate values of the Hartmann number Ha, we find an enhancement of heat transport. Furthermore, a maximum heat transport enhancement is observed at certain optimal $Ha_{opt}$. The enhanced heat transport may be understood as a result of the increased coherency of the thermal plumes, which are elementary heat carriers of the system. To our knowledge this is the first time that a heat transfer enhancement by the stabilising Lorentz force in quasistatic magnetoconvection has been observed. We further found that the optimal enhancement may be understood in terms of the crossing between the thermal and the momentum boundary layers (BL) and the fact that temperature fluctuations are maximum near the position where the BLs cross. These findings demonstrate that the heat transport enhancement phenomenon in the quasistatic magnetoconvection system belongs to the same universality class of stabilising$-$destabilising ($S$-$D$) turbulent flows as the systems of confined Rayleigh-Bénard (CRB), rotating Rayleigh-Bénard (RRB) and double-diffusive convection (DDC). This is further supported by the findings that the heat transport, boundary layer ratio and the temperature fluctuations in magnetoconvection at the boundary layer crossing point are similar to the other three cases.
