REINS: Refusal-Enhanced Inhibitory Steering with Sparse Autoencoder Features

Steering with Sparse Autoencoders (SAEs) offers a lightweight inference-time path for adapting the behavior of large language models without retraining. By exposing sparse and interpretable features, SAE steering provides a promising interface for safety control that guides harmful continuations toward refusal. However, we observe that complex wrappers can still undermine existing SAE steering methods on harmful prompts. To evaluate this failure mode systematically, we construct Generalized Undercover Instruction Safety Evaluation (GUISE), a dataset of harmful prompts with complex wrappers. Existing single direction SAE steering methods do not reliably produce refusals on harmful prompts, suggesting that refusal enhancement alone can be too weak when the harmful continuation path remains active. This motivates us to propose Refusal-Enhanced INhibitory Steering (REINS), which suppresses harmful continuation features and enhances safe refusal features in the same SAE feature space. Experiments on GUISE and other datasets show that prior methods either intervene too weakly or achieve only apparent safety through collapse, while REINS substantially reduces harmful responses, markedly improves safe refusals and largely preserves general capabilities.

Ionized gas components in low surface brightness galaxy AGC 111629

We present integral field spectroscopy of ionized gas components in AGC 111629, an edge-on low surface brightness galaxy (LSBG) with a stellar mass of 5.7$\times$10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$. AGC 111629 displays an irregular H$α$ morphology and an arch-like structure in the extraplanar region, which is absent in continuous stellar image. The irregular H$α$ morphology may be related to a past merger event with its satellite galaxy AGC 748815. A peanut-shaped structure at the center in the integrated [OIII]$λ$5007 map, with a position angle that differs from that of the main stellar disk. This structure exhibits a higher [OIII]$λ$5007/H$β$ flux ratio, a larger equivalent width (EW) of [OIII]$λ$5007, and a lower H$α$/H$β$ flux radio ($<$ 2.86). Some spaxels associated with the peanut-shaped structure fall within the composite region of the BPT diagram based on [NII]$λ$6583. These features may be associated with the central AGN. Additionally, a sub-peak in the southern disk is clearly visible in the [OIII]$λ$5007 map. An extended region ($\sim$ 2 kpc) with an extremely low value of H$α$/H$β$ flux ratio is observed near this sub-peak. We interpret the sub-peak as a superbubble likely driven by supernova explosions in the southern disk. We derive the gas-phase metallicity, 12+log(O/H), using the [NII]$λ$6583/H$α$ diagnostic and find that AGC 111629 exhibits low central metallicity. This may result from feedback associated with AGN activity and supernova explosions.

Formation of A Nuclear Star Cluster Through A Merger Event In The Low Surface Brightness Galaxy AGC 223218

We present the properties of the nuclear star cluster (NSC) in the low surface brightness galaxy AGC 223218. The disk of the galaxy can be modeled using two S$\acute{\rm e}$rsic components with distinct central positions: one representing the inner bright disk and the other corresponding to the extended outer disk. We estimate the stellar masses of the NSC and the host galaxy using two methods: spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting and mass-to-light versus color relations (MLCRs). The stellar mass ratio of the NSC to AGC 223218 is 0.094 based on the SED method and 0.072 using MLCRs. The NSC presents a younger stellar population and a lower [Fe/H] value than the host, as determined from SDSS and LAMOST spectra analysis using pPXF fitting. AGC 223218 is located at the boundary between the Seyfert and star-forming regions in the [SII]-BPT diagram, whereas in the [NII]-BPT diagram, it falls in the track of star-forming SDSS galaxies. This suggests the presence of strong shocks in AGC 223218. We propose that the NSC in AGC 223218 may have formed as a result of a merger event. Furthermore, the observed X-ray luminosity of AGC 223218 with eROSITA is two orders of magnitude higher than the expected X-ray luminosity from X-ray binaries, suggesting the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in the NSC. To account for the observed X-ray luminosity, we estimate the IMBH accretion rate to be approximately 0.001.

Kaluza-Klein modes of $U(1)$ gauge vector field on brane with codimension-$d$

From the paper [JHEP 01 (2019) 021], it is known that the effective action of a massless $U(1)$ gauge vector field on a codimension-2 brane is gauge invariant due to the coupling between the vector Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes with two types of scalar KK modes. It is interesting to generalize this result to a brane world model with an arbitrary number of extra dimensions. In this work, we first investigate the case with three extra dimensions. After KK decomposition, there are three types of scalar KK modes. In addition to the mutual coupling between these scalar modes, there are also coupling between the scalar and the vector KK modes. The coupling constants are not all independent. The relationships between the coupling constants enable us to obtain a gauge invariant effective action, from which we can see that the masses of the vector KK modes depend on all the three extra dimensions. The masses of the scalar modes, however, depend only on two of the three extra dimensions. Then we generalize the results into branes with codimension $d$ ($d=1, 2...$), and find that $d$ will directly affect the masses of the KK modes. But there is always a gauge invariant effective action for the massive vector KK modes.

$q$-form field on a $p$-brane with codimension two

In this paper, by performing a general Kaluza-Klein (KK) decomposition, we obtain a gauge invariant effective action for a bulk massless $q$-form field on a $p$-brane with codimension two. There appear four types of KK modes: two $(q-1)$-forms and one $(q-2)$-form in addtion to the ordinary $q$-form, which are essential for the gauge invariance. Due to the two extra dimensions, we find eight Schrödinger-like equations for the four modes and their mass spectra are closely related. Moreover, via this decomposition mechanism, the Hodge duality in the bulk naturally induces four coupled dualities on the brane, which guarantees that the physical equavalence of bulk dual fields is preserved under the dimensional reduction.

Kalb-Ramond field localization on a de Sitter Thick Brane

In this paper, we study the localization of Kalb-Ramond (KR) tensorial gauge field on a non-flat de Sitter thick brane. The localization and resonance of KR gauge field are discussed for three kinds of couplings. For the first coupling there is no localized tensorial zero mode. For the other two couplings, the zero mode of KR field can be localized under certain condition. There are resonant KK modes on the thick brane for the third case. Furthermore, we mainly analyze the effects of three parameters on the localization and resonant mode for KR field.
