PC-bzip2: a phase-space continuity enhanced lossless compression algorithm for light field microscopy data

Light-field fluorescence microscopy (LFM) is a powerful elegant compact method for long-term high-speed imaging of complex biological systems, such as neuron activities and rapid movements of organelles. LFM experiments typically generate terabytes image data and require a huge number of storage space. Some lossy compression algorithms have been proposed recently with good compression performance. However, since the specimen usually only tolerates low power density illumination for long-term imaging with low phototoxicity, the image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is relative-ly low, which will cause the loss of some efficient position or intensity information by using such lossy compression al-gorithms. Here, we propose a phase-space continuity enhanced bzip2 (PC-bzip2) lossless compression method for LFM data as a high efficiency and open-source tool, which combines GPU-based fast entropy judgement and multi-core-CPU-based high-speed lossless compression. Our proposed method achieves almost 10% compression ratio improvement while keeping the capability of high-speed compression, compared with original bzip2. We evaluated our method on fluorescence beads data and fluorescence staining cells data with different SNRs. Moreover, by introducing the temporal continuity, our method shows the superior compression ratio on time series data of zebrafish blood vessels.

Kinetic Modeling Analysis of Ar Addition to Atmospheric Pressure N2-H2 Plasma for Plasma-Assisted Catalytic Synthesis of NH3

Zero-dimensional kinetic modeling of atmospheric pressure Ar-N2-H2 nonthermal plasma was carried out to gain mechanistic insights into ammonia formation during plasma-assisted catalysis of ammonia synthesis. The kinetic model was developed for a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) quartz wool-packed bed reactor operating at near room temperature using a kHz-frequency plasma source. With 30% Ar mixed in a 1:1 N2-H2 plasma at 760 Torr, we find that NH3 production is dominated by Eley-Rideal (E-R) surface reactions, which heavily involve surface NHx species derived from N and H radicals in the gas phase, while the influence of excited N2 molecules is negligible. This is contrary to the commonly proposed mechanism that excited N2 molecules created by Penning excitation of N2 by Ar (4s) and Ar(4p) plays a significant role in assisting NH3 formation. Our model shows that the enhanced NH3 formation upon Ar dilution is unlikely due to the interactions between Ar and H species, as excited Ar atoms have a weak effect on H radical formation through H2 dissociation compared to electrons. We find that excited Ar atoms contribute to 28% of the N radical production in the gas phase via N2 dissociation, while the rest is dominated by electron-impact dissociation. Furthermore, Ar species play a negligible role in the product NH3 dissociation. N2 conversion sensitivity analyses were carried out for electron density (ne) and reduced electric field (E/N), and contributions from Ar to gas-phase N radical production were quantified. The model can provide guidance on potential reasons for observing enhanced NH3 formation upon Ar dilution in N2-H2 plasmas beyond changes to the discharge characteristics.

Observation of Flat Band and Van Hove Singularity in Non-superconducting Nitrogen-doped Lutetium Hydride

Hydrogen-rich materials offer a compelling avenue towards room temperature superconductivity, albeit under ultra-high pressure. However, the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure remains elusive, due to the inherent instability of most of the hydrogen-rich materials upon pressure release. Very recently, nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride was claimed to host room temperature superconductivity under near ambient pressure but was disproven by following works. Upon decompression, nitrogen doped lutetium hydride manifests a stable metallic phase with dark blue color. Moreover, high temperature superconductivity has been reported in lutetium hydrides Lu4H23 (~71 K) under around 200 GPa. These properties engender an unprecedented opportunity, allowing for the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure intrinsic to hydrogen-rich material. In this work, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the non-superconducting nitrogen doped lutetium hydride, we observed significant flat band and Van Hove singularity marginally below the Fermi level. These salient features, identified as critical elements, proffer potential amplifiers for the realization of heightened superconductivity, as evidenced by prior research. Our results not only unveil a confluence of potent strong correlation effects and anisotropy within the Lu-H-N compound, but also provide a prospect for engineering high temperature superconductivity through the strategic manipulation of flat band and the VHS, effectively tailoring their alignment with the Fermi energy.

Robust Failure Diagnosis of Microservice System through Multimodal Data

Automatic failure diagnosis is crucial for large microservice systems. Currently, most failure diagnosis methods rely solely on single-modal data (i.e., using either metrics, logs, or traces). In this study, we conduct an empirical study using real-world failure cases to show that combining these sources of data (multimodal data) leads to a more accurate diagnosis. However, effectively representing these data and addressing imbalanced failures remain challenging. To tackle these issues, we propose DiagFusion, a robust failure diagnosis approach that uses multimodal data. It leverages embedding techniques and data augmentation to represent the multimodal data of service instances, combines deployment data and traces to build a dependency graph, and uses a graph neural network to localize the root cause instance and determine the failure type. Our evaluations using real-world datasets show that DiagFusion outperforms existing methods in terms of root cause instance localization (improving by 20.9% to 368%) and failure type determination (improving by 11.0% to 169%).

Modeling Adaptive Fine-grained Task Relatedness for Joint CTR-CVR Estimation

In modern advertising and recommender systems, multi-task learning (MTL) paradigm has been widely employed to jointly predict diverse user feedbacks (e.g. click and purchase). While, existing MTL approaches are either rigid to adapt to different scenarios, or only capture coarse-grained task relatedness, thus making it difficult to effectively transfer knowledge across tasks. To address these issues, in this paper, we propose an Adaptive Fine-grained Task Relatedness modeling approach, AdaFTR, for joint CTR-CVR estimation. Our approach is developed based on a parameter-sharing MTL architecture, and introduces a novel adaptive inter-task representation alignment method based on contrastive learning.Given an instance, the inter-task representations of the same instance are considered as positive, while the representations of another random instance are considered as negative. Furthermore, we explicitly model fine-grained task relatedness as the contrast strength (i.e. the temperature coefficient in InfoNCE loss) at the instance level. For this purpose, we build a relatedness prediction network, so that it can predict the contrast strength for inter-task representations of an instance. In this way, we can adaptively set the temperature for contrastive learning in a fine-grained way (i.e. instance level), so as to better capture task relatedness. Both offline evaluation with public e-commerce datasets and online test in a real advertising system at Alibaba have demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach.

Point Cloud Change Detection With Stereo V-SLAM:Dataset, Metrics and Baseline

Localization and navigation are basic robotic tasks requiring an accurate and up-to-date map to finish these tasks, with crowdsourced data to detect map changes posing an appealing solution. Collecting and processing crowdsourced data requires low-cost sensors and algorithms, but existing methods rely on expensive sensors or computationally expensive algorithms. Additionally, there is no existing dataset to evaluate point cloud change detection. Thus, this paper proposes a novel framework using low-cost sensors like stereo cameras and IMU to detect changes in a point cloud map. Moreover, we create a dataset and the corresponding metrics to evaluate point cloud change detection with the help of the high-fidelity simulator Unreal Engine 4. Experiments show that our visualbased framework can effectively detect the changes in our dataset.

RecBole 2.0: Towards a More Up-to-Date Recommendation Library

In order to support the study of recent advances in recommender systems, this paper presents an extended recommendation library consisting of eight packages for up-to-date topics and architectures. First of all, from a data perspective, we consider three important topics related to data issues (i.e., sparsity, bias and distribution shift), and develop five packages accordingly: meta-learning, data augmentation, debiasing, fairness and cross-domain recommendation. Furthermore, from a model perspective, we develop two benchmarking packages for Transformer-based and graph neural network (GNN)-based models, respectively. All the packages (consisting of 65 new models) are developed based on a popular recommendation framework RecBole, ensuring that both the implementation and interface are unified. For each package, we provide complete implementations from data loading, experimental setup, evaluation and algorithm implementation. This library provides a valuable resource to facilitate the up-to-date research in recommender systems. The project is released at the link: https://github.com/RUCAIBox/RecBole2.0.

Feature-aware Diversified Re-ranking with Disentangled Representations for Relevant Recommendation

Relevant recommendation is a special recommendation scenario which provides relevant items when users express interests on one target item (e.g., click, like and purchase). Besides considering the relevance between recommendations and trigger item, the recommendations should also be diversified to avoid information cocoons. However, existing diversified recommendation methods mainly focus on item-level diversity which is insufficient when the recommended items are all relevant to the target item. Moreover, redundant or noisy item features might affect the performance of simple feature-aware recommendation approaches. Faced with these issues, we propose a Feature Disentanglement Self-Balancing Re-ranking framework (FDSB) to capture feature-aware diversity. The framework consists of two major modules, namely disentangled attention encoder (DAE) and self-balanced multi-aspect ranker. In DAE, we use multi-head attention to learn disentangled aspects from rich item features. In the ranker, we develop an aspect-specific ranking mechanism that is able to adaptively balance the relevance and diversity for each aspect. In experiments, we conduct offline evaluation on the collected dataset and deploy FDSB on KuaiShou app for online A/B test on the function of relevant recommendation. The significant improvements on both recommendation quality and user experience verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Matched Design for Marginal Causal Effect on Restricted Mean Survival Time in Observational Studies

Investigating the causal relationship between exposure and the time-to-event outcome is an important topic in biomedical research. Previous literature has discussed the potential issues of using the hazard ratio as a marginal causal effect measure due to its noncollapsibility property. In this paper, we advocate using the restricted mean survival time (RMST) difference as the marginal causal effect measure, which is collapsible and has a simple interpretation as the difference of area under survival curves over a certain time horizon. To address both measured and unmeasured confounding, a matched design with sensitivity analysis is proposed. Matching is used to pair similar treated and untreated subjects together, which is more robust to outcome model misspecification. Our propensity score matched RMST difference estimator is shown to be asymptotically unbiased and the corresponding variance estimator is calculated by accounting for the correlation due to matching. The simulation study also demonstrates that our method has adequate empirical performance and outperforms many competing methods used in practice. To assess the impact of unmeasured confounding, we develop a sensitivity analysis strategy by adapting the E-value approach to matched data. We apply the proposed method to the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) to examine the causal effect of smoking on stroke-free survival.

Improving Graph Collaborative Filtering with Neighborhood-enriched Contrastive Learning

Recently, graph collaborative filtering methods have been proposed as an effective recommendation approach, which can capture users' preference over items by modeling the user-item interaction graphs. In order to reduce the influence of data sparsity, contrastive learning is adopted in graph collaborative filtering for enhancing the performance. However, these methods typically construct the contrastive pairs by random sampling, which neglect the neighboring relations among users (or items) and fail to fully exploit the potential of contrastive learning for recommendation. To tackle the above issue, we propose a novel contrastive learning approach, named Neighborhood-enriched Contrastive Learning, named NCL, which explicitly incorporates the potential neighbors into contrastive pairs. Specifically, we introduce the neighbors of a user (or an item) from graph structure and semantic space respectively. For the structural neighbors on the interaction graph, we develop a novel structure-contrastive objective that regards users (or items) and their structural neighbors as positive contrastive pairs. In implementation, the representations of users (or items) and neighbors correspond to the outputs of different GNN layers. Furthermore, to excavate the potential neighbor relation in semantic space, we assume that users with similar representations are within the semantic neighborhood, and incorporate these semantic neighbors into the prototype-contrastive objective. The proposed NCL can be optimized with EM algorithm and generalized to apply to graph collaborative filtering methods. Extensive experiments on five public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NCL, notably with 26% and 17% performance gain over a competitive graph collaborative filtering base model on the Yelp and Amazon-book datasets respectively. Our code is available at: https://github.com/RUCAIBox/NCL.

RecBole: Towards a Unified, Comprehensive and Efficient Framework for Recommendation Algorithms

In recent years, there are a large number of recommendation algorithms proposed in the literature, from traditional collaborative filtering to deep learning algorithms. However, the concerns about how to standardize open source implementation of recommendation algorithms continually increase in the research community. In the light of this challenge, we propose a unified, comprehensive and efficient recommender system library called RecBole, which provides a unified framework to develop and reproduce recommendation algorithms for research purpose. In this library, we implement 73 recommendation models on 28 benchmark datasets, covering the categories of general recommendation, sequential recommendation, context-aware recommendation and knowledge-based recommendation. We implement the RecBole library based on PyTorch, which is one of the most popular deep learning frameworks. Our library is featured in many aspects, including general and extensible data structures, comprehensive benchmark models and datasets, efficient GPU-accelerated execution, and extensive and standard evaluation protocols. We provide a series of auxiliary functions, tools, and scripts to facilitate the use of this library, such as automatic parameter tuning and break-point resume. Such a framework is useful to standardize the implementation and evaluation of recommender systems. The project and documents are released at https://recbole.io/.
