Stateful Evidence-Driven Retrieval-Augmented Generation with Iterative Reasoning

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) grounds Large Language Models (LLMs) in external knowledge but often suffers from flat context representations and stateless retrieval, leading to unstable performance. We propose Stateful Evidence-Driven RAG with Iterative Reasoning, a framework that models question answering as a progressive evidence accumulation process. Retrieved documents are converted into structured reasoning units with explicit relevance and confidence signals and maintained in a persistent evidence pool capturing both supportive and non-supportive information. The framework performs evidence-driven deficiency analysis to identify gaps and conflicts and iteratively refines queries to guide subsequent retrieval. This iterative reasoning process enables stable evidence aggregation and improves robustness to noisy retrieval. Experiments on multiple question answering benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements over standard RAG and multi-step baselines, while effectively accumulating high-quality evidence and maintaining stable performance under substantial retrieval noise.

Microwave heating as a universal method to transform confined molecules into armchair graphene nanoribbons

Armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) with sub-nanometer width are potential materials for fabrication of novel nanodevices thanks to their moderate direct band gaps. AGNRs are usually synthesized by polymerizing precursor molecules on substrate surface. However, it is time-consuming and not suitable for large-scale production. AGNRs can also be grown by transforming precursor molecules inside single-walled carbon nanotubes via furnace annealing, but the obtained AGNRs are normally twisted. In this work, microwave heating is applied for transforming precursor molecules into AGNRs. The fast heating process allows synthesizing the AGNRs in seconds. Several different molecules were successfully transformed into AGNRs, suggesting that it is a universal method. More importantly, as demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy, aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculations, less twisted AGNRs are synthesized by the microwave heating than the furnace annealing. Our results reveal a route for rapid production of AGNRs in large scale, which would benefit future applications in novel AGNRs-based semiconductor devices.

An Efficient Simulation-Based Travel Demand Calibration Algorithm for Large-Scale Metropolitan Traffic Models

Metropolitan scale vehicular traffic modeling is used by a variety of private and public sector urban mobility stakeholders to inform the design and operations of road networks. High-resolution stochastic traffic simulators are increasingly used to describe detailed demand-supply interactions. The design of efficient calibration techniques remains a major challenge. This paper considers a class of high-dimensional calibration problems known as origin-destination (OD) calibration. We formulate the problem as a continuous simulation-based optimization problem. Our proposed algorithm builds upon recent metamodel methods that tackle the simulation-based problem by solving a sequence of approximate analytical optimization problems, which rely on the use of analytical network models. In this paper, we formulate a network model defined as a system of linear equations, the dimension of which scales linearly with the number of roads with field data and independently of the dimension of the route choice set. This makes the approach suitable for large-scale metropolitan networks. The approach has enhanced efficiency compared with past metamodel formulations that are based on systems of nonlinear, rather than linear, equations. It also has enhanced efficiency compared to traditional calibration methods that resort to simulation-based estimates of traffic assignment matrices, while the proposed approach uses analytical approximations of these matrices. We benchmark the approach considering a peak period Salt Lake City case study and calibrate based on field vehicular count data. The new formulation yields solutions with good performance and is suitable for large-scale road networks.

Domestic activities clustering from audio recordings using convolutional capsule autoencoder network

Recent efforts have been made on domestic activities classification from audio recordings, especially the works submitted to the challenge of DCASE (Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events) since 2018. In contrast, few studies were done on domestic activities clustering, which is a newly emerging problem. Domestic activities clustering from audio recordings aims at merging audio clips which belong to the same class of domestic activity into a single cluster. Domestic activities clustering is an effective way for unsupervised estimation of daily activities performed in home environment. In this study, we propose a method for domestic activities clustering using a convolutional capsule autoencoder network (CCAN). In the method, the deep embeddings are learned by the autoencoder in the CCAN, while the deep embeddings which belong to the same class of domestic activities are merged into a single cluster by a clustering layer in the CCAN. Evaluated on a public dataset adopted in DCASE-2018 Task 5, the results show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of the metrics of clustering accuracy and normalized mutual information.

Product Review Summarization based on Facet Identification and Sentence Clustering

Product review nowadays has become an important source of information, not only for customers to find opinions about products easily and share their reviews with peers, but also for product manufacturers to get feedback on their products. As the number of product reviews grows, it becomes difficult for users to search and utilize these resources in an efficient way. In this work, we build a product review summarization system that can automatically process a large collection of reviews and aggregate them to generate a concise summary. More importantly, the drawback of existing product summarization systems is that they cannot provide the underlying reasons to justify users' opinions. In our method, we solve this problem by applying clustering, prior to selecting representative candidates for summarization.

A PDTB-Styled End-to-End Discourse Parser

We have developed a full discourse parser in the Penn Discourse Treebank (PDTB) style. Our trained parser first identifies all discourse and non-discourse relations, locates and labels their arguments, and then classifies their relation types. When appropriate, the attribution spans to these relations are also determined. We present a comprehensive evaluation from both component-wise and error-cascading perspectives.
