A Type IIB Dualifold

We present evidence that ten-dimensional type IIB string theory orbifolded by the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ duality symmetry at the strong-coupling fixed point $τ=\exp(2πi/3)$ defines a consistent theory. Motivated by its F-theory dual description and its duality with M-theory in nine dimensions and type IIA string theory in eight dimensions, we argue that the resulting theory is a ten-dimensional chiral non-supersymmetric theory with a discrete gauge symmetry whose bosonic quotient is the automorphism group of the Narain lattice $Γ^{2,2}(A_2)$ ($S_3 \times S_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$). We further identify the ten-dimensional tachyon fields with the corresponding Narain moduli. Gauge anomalies cancel nontrivially through a topological Green-Schwarz mechanism involving a $\mathbb{Z}_3$-valued two-form gauge symmetry: the ten-dimensional lift of the familiar zero-form orbifold quantum symmetry in the eight-dimensional type IIA description.

Isolated Critical Points for Scherk-Schwarz Compactifications of M-theory

We consider Scherk-Schwarz compactifications of M-theory (toroidal compactifications with a non-trivial spin structure) in various dimensions and find isolated critical points of the potential on the moduli space. We demonstrate this by identifying the unbroken duality group and finding isolated points on the moduli spaces which are fixed by elements of the unbroken duality group. We work out concrete examples involving compactifications down to $d=8,6, 5$ and $4$ spacetime dimensions. We also conjecture a duality covariant anomaly cancellation condition for M-theory on $T^n$ orbifolded by discrete $\mathbb Z_N$ symmetries acting as phases on the charge lattice. This anomaly cancellation condition generalizes the level matching requirement for perturbative string orbifolds.

Bounds on Discrete Gauge Symmetries in Supergravity

We place bounds on the order of enhanced discrete gauge symmetries that act on massless fields and thus arise at subloci of the moduli space in supergravity theories. We focus on supersymmetric theories with 8 or more supercharges which in some cases lead to sharp upper bounds realized by specific string constructions.

A Duality Web for Non-Supersymmetric Strings

Motivated by the recently proposed geometric descriptions of 0A and 0B in M-theory and F-theory, we propose a web of duality among non-supersymmetric strings. In particular we argue that the distinct $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quotients of M-theory on $S^1\vee S^1$ lead to both 0A orientifolds as well as non-supersymmetric 10d heterotic vacua of the E-type, including the tachyon-free $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ strings. Moreover we identify certain $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quotients of F-theory on $(S^1\vee S^1)\times S^1$ with 0B orientifolds (including a tachyon-free model) as well as others with dual to non-supersymmetric heterotic strings of the D-type. Moreover using this picture we resolve some puzzles and provide further evidence for the Bergman-Gaberdiel duality between a particular 0B orientifold in 10 dimensions and the Narain compactification of 26-dimensional bosonic strings on a 16-dimensional torus, as well as the DMS conjecture of a 0A orientifold duality in 10d with a bosonic string orientifold of a Narain compactification to 10d.

M-theory on $S^1\vee S^1$ as Type 0A

We propose an exotic geometric M-theory dual for the weak coupling Type 0A string: compactification on a sub-Planckian $S^1\vee S^1$ (two circles connected at a point), where strong quantum effects lead to fields living on distinct resolutions of that space. Moreover we argue that tachyon condensation of the 0A theory corresponds to shrinking of one of the two circles leading to the IIA supersymmetric string. We use this and other dualities to provide an F-theoretic description of the axio-dilaton and the tachyonic field of Type 0B and argue for the existence of a strong coupling critical point of the potential using the resulting duality symmetry $Γ_0(2)\subset SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ when tachyon field vanishes. The existence of this critical point can also be argued using conventional M-theory dualities. If this critical point is unique it is an unstable dS vacuum. Using this we propose a strong coupling conformal fixed point for a non-supersymmetric gauge theory in four dimensions living on coincident $D3^+-D3^-$branes of 0B. More generally we conjecture that the tachyon field can be identified with a pair of points on the torus parameterized by $z$ leading to the full duality group $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ acting on $(z,τ)$. We find tantalizing hints that for both 0A and 0B the tachyon fields can be identified with the holonomy of a flat $SU(2)$ gauge field suggesting that we have two copies of the universe interacting with one another as if they are D-branes!

String islands, discrete theta angles and the 6D $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ string landscape

The complete classification of the landscape of 6D $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ string vacua remains an open problem. In this work we prove a classification theorem for 6D $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ asymmetric orbifolds utilizing a correspondence with orbifolds of chiral 2D SCFTs with $c= 24$ (or $c= 12$). Interestingly, this class of theories can give rise to 6D vacua in which the only massless degrees of freedom reside in the gravity multiplet, with no moduli other than the dilaton, thus corresponding to truly isolated vacua, called string islands. It is expected that there exist five new type II islands with as-yet-unknown constructions. In this work we construct them all using asymmetric $\mathbb{Z}_n$-orbifolds of Type II on $T^4$ with $n = 5,8,10,12$. We show that the cases $n = 5,8$ admit non-trivial discrete theta angles which have important consequences for both the string and particle charge lattices. In fact they provide examples of BPS-incompleteness and the strongest failure of the lattice weak gravity conjecture. Our work is expected to finalize our understanding of all perturbative 6D $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ theories.

Counting AdS Vacua

We study the 'number' $\mathfrak{N}(μ)$ of AdS vacua with a UV cut off $ μ$. It has been proposed that this number is finite. We find evidence that $\mathfrak{N}(μ)\sim a \ μ^{-b}$ as $μ\rightarrow 0$ for some constants $a$ and $b$ of $O(1)$ in Planck units that may depend on dimension and the number of supercharges. For this result to hold it is crucial to integrate over the volume of massless and tachyonic directions of AdS which corresponds to the volume of the space of marginal and relevant deformations of the dual CFT. We are led to the surprising prediction that theories with large number of light moduli contribute very little to the volume measure among all theories. We also speculate about the dS case leading to the number of quasi-dS vacua of the order of $Λ^{-α}$ for some $O(1)$ parameter $α$.

The Quasicrystalline String Landscape

In this work we investigate a largely unexplored non-geometric corner of the string landscape: the quasicrystalline orbifolds. These exist at special points of the Narain moduli leading to frozen moduli and large quantum symmetries. Here we complete the classification and construction of quasicrystalline Narain lattices and use this to explore supersymmetric compactifications in $4\leq D\leq 6$ and with $4\leq Q\leq 16$ supercharges, leading to novel theories including theories with large quantum symmetries at all points in the moduli space. We anticipate these constructions will have many applications and in subsequent papers we apply these techniques to construct non-geometric F-theory models as well as new non-supersymmetric tachyon free models. Similarly these constructions can lead to constructing exotic matter representations in the string landscape.

New Non-Supersymmetric Tachyon-Free Strings

In four decades of string theory research, only a handful of non-supersymmetric tachyon-free strings with only one neutral scalar at tree level were found. We construct new such non-supersymmetric tachyon-free string theories using asymmetric orbifolds that serve as the lower-dimensional counterparts to the $O(16) \times O(16)$ string in 4d, 6d, and 8d, each featuring only one neutral scalar at tree level, chiral matter and positive leading order cosmological constant. The 4d construction uses a quasicrystalline orbifold.

On the String Landscape Without Hypermultiplets

In this work we study interesting corners of the quantum gravity landscape with 8 supercharges pushing the boundaries of our current understanding. Calabi-Yau threefolds compactifications of F/M/type II theories to 6, 5 and 4 dimensions are the most prominent examples of this class, and these always lead to a universal hypermultiplet coming from the volume/string coupling constant. We find that there are asymmetric orbifold constructions which have no hypermultiplets in 4 or 5 dimensions and no neutral hypers in 6d. We argue that these theories can also be obtained by going to strong coupling/small volume regions of geometric constructions where a new Coulomb branch opens up and moving in this direction freezes the volume/string coupling constant. Interestingly we find that the Kodaira condition encountered in geometric limits of F-theory compactifications to 6 dimensions is violated in these corners of the landscape due to strong quantum corrections. We also construct a theory in 3 dimensions which if it were to arise by toroidal compactifications from 5d, it would have to come from pure ${\mathcal N}=1$ supergravity with no massless scalar fields.

Non-Supersymmetric AdS from String Theory

We construct non-supersymmetric AdS3 solutions of the O(16)xO(16) heterotic string. Most of the backgrounds have a classical worldsheet definition but are quantum string vacua in the sense that string loop corrections change the curvature of spacetime. At one-loop, the change in the cosmological constant is positive but never sufficient to uplift to de Sitter space. By computing the spectrum of spacetime scalars, we show that there are no tachyons below the BF bound. We also show that there is a solution with no spacetime NS-NS flux. This background has no classical string limit. Surprisingly, there appears to be parametric control over these constructions, which provide a framework for exploring quantum gravity and holography without supersymmetry.

Conway Subgroup Symmetric Compactifications Redux

We extend the investigation of special toroidal compactifications of heterotic string theory for which the half-BPS states provide representations of subgroups of the Conway group. We also explore dual descriptions of these theories and find that they are all linked to either F-theory or type IIA string theory on K3 surfaces with symplectic automorphism groups that are the same Conway subgroups as those of the heterotic dual. The matching with type IIA K3 dual theories includes both the matching of symmetry groups and a comparison between the Narain lattice on the heterotic side and the cohomology lattice on the type IIA side. We present twelve examples where we can identify a type IIA dual K3 orbifold theory as the dual description of the heterotic theory. In addition, we include a Mathematica package that performs most of the computations required for these comparisons.
