SSPO: Structure-Aware Similarity-Weighted Preference Optimization for Neural Combinatorial Optimization

Neural combinatorial optimization (NCO) relies on parallel solution sampling for training, yet existing methods fail to fully exploit the rich information latent in a co-sampled solution group. Preference-optimization methods anchor on the single best solution and discard fine-grained quality and structural signal from all other peers-a failure we term gradient signal polarization. Mean-based baselines instead weight peers uniformly, so structurally near-identical peers flood the baseline with redundant information and keep gradient variance high-a failure we term baseline redundancy. We propose SSPO (Structure-Aware Similarity-Weighted Preference Optimization), which scores all $B$ sampled solutions jointly through a dissimilarity-weighted leave-one-out baseline: structurally distinct peers receive higher weight, resolving both failures in a single mechanism. The baseline uses zero-parameter, problem-adaptive solution embeddings built from the encoder's existing node representations. Experiments on TSP, EFL, and JSP benchmarks show consistent gains over prior best-anchor and uniform-weight baselines. A direct comparison against uniform RLOO on TSP and EFL confirms that structure-aware weighting is the primary driver of improvement. The SSPO-trained EFL policy has been deployed in a production facility-location system at JD$\mathord{.}$com, confirming practical viability at scale.

FANCL: Feature-Guided Attention Network with Curriculum Learning for Brain Metastases Segmentation

Accurate segmentation of brain metastases (BMs) in MR image is crucial for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients. Methods based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved high segmentation performance. However, due to the loss of critical feature information caused by convolutional and pooling operations, CNNs still face great challenges in small BMs segmentation. Besides, BMs are irregular and easily confused with healthy tissues, which makes it difficult for the model to effectively learn tumor structure during training. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel model called feature-guided attention network with curriculum learning (FANCL). Based on CNNs, FANCL utilizes the input image and its feature to establish the intrinsic connections between metastases of different sizes, which can effectively compensate for the loss of high-level feature from small tumors with the information of large tumors. Furthermore, FANCL applies the voxel-level curriculum learning strategy to help the model gradually learn the structure and details of BMs. And baseline models of varying depths are employed as curriculum-mining networks for organizing the curriculum progression. The evaluation results on the BraTS-METS 2023 dataset indicate that FANCL significantly improves the segmentation performance, confirming the effectiveness of our method.

Sound velocity measurements of tantalum under shock compression in the 10-110 GPa range

The high-pressure melting curve of tantalum (Ta) has been the center of a long-standing controversy. Sound velocities along the Hugoniot curve are expected to help in understanding this issue. To that end, we employed a direct-reverse impact technique and velocity interferometry to determine sound velocities of Ta under shock compression in the 10-110 GPa pressure range. The measured longitudinal sound velocities show an obvious kink at ~60 GPa as a function of shock pressure, while the bulk sound velocities show no discontinuity. Such observation could result from a structural transformation associated with a negligible volume change or an electronic topological transition.
