Cramming and Credibility: Strategic Test Announcements in the Classroom

This paper studies a cheap-talk model of strategic test announcements. A teacher observes the day of the test of the next week decided by the nature and makes an announcement to his students who choose effort levels of studying. The competing forces are the teacher's value on consistent study habits and the students' grade orientation. We characterize the pure strategy Nash equilibrium under the linear-quadratic student utility. We also study what happens when the teacher can commit to an information policy.

Combinatorial Courant-Fischer-Weyl Minimax Principle on Cheeger $k$-constants of Weighted Forests

We establish novel max-min and minimax characterizations of Cheeger $k$-constants in weighted forests, thereby providing the first combinatorial analogue of the Courant-Fischer-Weyl minimax principle. As for applications, we prove that the forest 1-Laplacian variational eigenvalues are independent of the choice of typical indexes; we propose a refined higher order Cheeger inequality involving numbers of loops of graphs and $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues; and we present a combinatorial proof for the equality $h_k=\lambda_k(\Delta_1)$ which connects the 1-Laplacian variational eigenvalues and the multiway Cheeger constants.

Continuous Classification Aggregation

We prove that any optimal, independent, and zero unanimous fuzzy classification aggregation function of a continuum of individual classifications of $m\ge 3$ objects into $2\le p\le m$ types must be a weighted arithmetic mean. We also provide a characterization for the case when $m=p=2$.
