A Computer Search of New OBZCPs of Lengths up to 49

This paper aims to search for new optimal and sub-optimal Odd Binary Z-Complimentary Pairs (OBZCPs) for lengths up to 49. As an alternative to the celebrated binary Golay complementary pairs, optimal OBZCPs are the best almost-complementary sequence pairs having odd lengths. We introduce a computer search algorithm with time complexity $O(2^N)$, where $N$ denotes the sequence length and then show optimal results for all $27 \le N \le 33$ and $N=37,41,49$. For those sequence lengths (i.e., $N=35,39,43,45,47$) with no optimal pairs, we show OBZCPs with largest zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) widths (i.e., $Z$-optimal). Finally, based on the Pursley--Sarwate criterion (PSC), we present a table of OBZCPs with smallest combined auto-correlation and cross-correlation.

The KnowWhereGraph Ontology

KnowWhereGraph is one of the largest fully publicly available geospatial knowledge graphs. It includes data from 30 layers on natural hazards (e.g., hurricanes, wildfires), climate variables (e.g., air temperature, precipitation), soil properties, crop and land-cover types, demographics, and human health, various place and region identifiers, among other themes. These have been leveraged through the graph by a variety of applications to address challenges in food security and agricultural supply chains; sustainability related to soil conservation practices and farm labor; and delivery of emergency humanitarian aid following a disaster. In this paper, we introduce the ontology that acts as the schema for KnowWhereGraph. This broad overview provides insight into the requirements and design specifications for the graph and its schema, including the development methodology (modular ontology modeling) and the resources utilized to implement, materialize, and deploy KnowWhereGraph with its end-user interfaces and public query SPARQL endpoint.

Uncovering Regional Defaults from Photorealistic Forests in Text-to-Image Generation with DALL-E 2

Regional defaults describe the emerging phenomenon that text-to-image (T2I) foundation models used in generative AI are prone to over-proportionally depicting certain geographic regions to the exclusion of others. In this work, we introduce a scalable evaluation for uncovering such regional defaults. The evaluation consists of region hierarchy--based image generation and cross-level similarity comparisons. We carry out an experiment by prompting DALL-E 2, a state-of-the-art T2I generation model capable of generating photorealistic images, to depict a forest. We select forest as an object class that displays regional variation and can be characterized using spatial statistics. For a region in the hierarchy, our experiment reveals the regional defaults implicit in DALL-E 2, along with their scale-dependent nature and spatial relationships. In addition, we discover that the implicit defaults do not necessarily correspond to the most widely forested regions in reality. Our findings underscore a need for further investigation into the geography of T2I generation and other forms of generative AI.

Grid Evolution for Doubly Fractional Channel Estimation in OTFS Systems

In orthogonal time-frequency space communications, the performances of existing on-grid and off-grid channel estimation (CE) schemes are determined by the delay-Doppler (DD) grid density. In practice, multiple real-life DD channel responses might be co-located within a same DD grid interval, leading to performance degradation. A finer grid interval is needed to distinguish these responses, but this could result in a significantly higher CE complexity when traditional methods are used.To address this issue, a grid evolution method for doubly fractional CE is proposed by evolving the initially uniform coarse DD grid into a non-uniform dense grid. Simulation results show that our proposed method leads to improved computational efficiency, and achieves a good trade-off between CE performance and complexity.

Oversampled Low Ambiguity Zone Sequences for Channel Estimation over Doubly Selective Channels

Pilot sequence design over doubly selective channels (DSC) is challenging due to the variations in both the time- and frequency-domains. Against this background, the contribution of this paper is twofold: Firstly, we investigate the optimal sequence design criteria for efficient channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems under DSC. Secondly, to design pilot sequences that can satisfy the derived criteria, we propose a new metric called oversampled ambiguity function (O-AF), which considers both fractional and integer Doppler frequency shifts. Optimizing the sidelobes of O-AF through a modified iterative twisted approximation (ITROX) algorithm, we develop a new class of pilot sequences called ``oversampled low ambiguity zone (O-LAZ) sequences". Through numerical experiments, we evaluate the efficiency of the proposed O-LAZ sequences over the traditional low ambiguity zone (LAZ) sequences, Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences and m-sequences, by comparing their channel estimation performances over DSC.

A Further Investigation on Complete Complementary Codes from $q$-ary Functions

This research focuses on constructing $q$-ary functions for complete complementary codes (CCCs) with flexible parameters. Most existing work has primarily identified sufficient conditions for $q$-ary functions related to $q$-ary CCCs. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to establish both the necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary functions, encompassing most existing CCCs constructions as special cases. For $q$-ary CCCs with a length of $q^m$ and a set size of $q^{n+1}$, we begin by analyzing the necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary functions defined over the domain $\mathbb{Z}_q^m$. Additionally, we construct CCCs with lengths given by $L = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$, set sizes given by $K = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{n_i+1}$, and an alphabet size of $ν= \prod_{i=1}^k p_i$, where $p_1 < p_2 < \cdots < p_k$. To achieve these specific parameters, we examine the necessary and sufficient conditions for $ν$-ary functions over the domain $\mathbf{Z}_{p_1}^{m_1} \times \cdots \times \mathbf{Z}_{p_k}^{m_k}$, which is a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_ν^m$ and contains $\prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$ vectors. In this context, $\mathbf{Z}_{p_i}^{m_i} = \{0, 1, \ldots, p_i - 1\}^{m_i}$, and $m$ is the sum of $m_1, m_2, \ldots, m_k$. The $q$-ary and $ν$-ary functions allow us to cover all possible length sequences. However, we find that the proposed $ν$-ary functions are more suitable for generating CCCs with a length of $L = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$, particularly when $m_i$ is coprime to $m_j$ for some $1 \leq i \neq j \leq k$. While the proposed $q$-ary functions can also produce CCCs of the same length $L$, the set size and alphabet size become as large as $L$, since in this case, the only choice for $q$ is $L$. In contrast, the proposed $ν$-ary functions yield CCCs with a more flexible set size $K\leq L$ and an alphabet size of $ν<L$.

Towards 6G-V2X: Aggregated RF-VLC for Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Autonomous Driving

We are witnessing a transition to a new era where driverless cars will be pervasively connected to deliver significantly improved safety, traffic efficiency, and travel experiences. A diverse set of advanced vehicular use cases including connected autonomous vehicles will be made possible by building upon the emerging sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. Among many 6G wireless technologies, the principal objective of this paper is to introduce the potential benefits of the hybrid integration of Vehicular Visible Light Communication (V VLC) and Vehicular Radio Frequency (V RF) communication systems by studying the impact of interference as well as various meteorological phenomenon viz. rain, fog and dry snow. In particular, we show that regardless of any meteorological impact, a properly configured link-aggregated hybrid V-VLC/V-RF system is capable of meeting stringent ultra high reliability (>99.999%) and ultra-low latency (<3 ms) requirements, making it a promising candidate for 6G Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communications. To stimulate future research in the hybrid RF-VLC V2X space, we also highlight the potential challenges and research directions.

Iterative Equalization of CPM With Unitary Approximate Message Passing

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) has extensive applications in wireless communications due to its high spectral and power efficiency. However, its nonlinear characteristics pose significant challenges for detection in frequency selective fading channels. This paper proposes an iterative receiver tailored for the detection of CPM signals over frequency selective fading channels. This design leverages the factor graph framework to integrate equalization, demodulation, and decoding functions. The equalizer employs the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP) algorithm, while the unitary transformation is implemented using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) with the aid of a cyclic prefix (CP), thereby achieving low computational complexity while with high performance. For CPM demodulation and channel decoding, with belief propagation (BP), we design a message passing-based maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm, and the message exchange between the demodulator, decoder and equalizer is elaborated. With proper message passing schedules, the receiver can achieve fast convergence. Simulation results show that compared with existing turbo receivers, the proposed receiver delivers significant performance enhancement with low computational complexity.

AFDM-SCMA: A Promising Waveform for Massive Connectivity over High Mobility Channels

This paper studies the affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM)-empowered sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system, referred to as AFDM-SCMA, for supporting massive connectivity in high-mobility environments. First, by placing the sparse codewords on the AFDM chirp subcarriers, the input-output (I/O) relation of AFDM-SCMA systems is presented. Next, we delve into the generalized receiver design, chirp rate selection, and error rate performance of the proposed AFDM-SCMA. The proposed AFDM-SCMA is shown to provide a general framework and subsume the existing OFDM-SCMA as a special case. Third, for efficient transceiver design, we further propose a class of sparse codebooks for simplifying the I/O relation, referred to as I/O relation-inspired codebook design in this paper. Building upon these codebooks, we propose a novel iterative detection and decoding scheme with linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator for both downlink and uplink channels based on orthogonal approximate message passing principles. Our numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed AFDM-SCMA systems over OFDM-SCMA systems in terms of the error rate performance. We show that the proposed receiver can significantly enhance the error rate performance while reducing the detection complexity.

Measuring Geographic Diversity of Foundation Models with a Natural Language--based Geo-guessing Experiment on GPT-4

Generative AI based on foundation models provides a first glimpse into the world represented by machines trained on vast amounts of multimodal data ingested by these models during training. If we consider the resulting models as knowledge bases in their own right, this may open up new avenues for understanding places through the lens of machines. In this work, we adopt this thinking and select GPT-4, a state-of-the-art representative in the family of multimodal large language models, to study its geographic diversity regarding how well geographic features are represented. Using DBpedia abstracts as a ground-truth corpus for probing, our natural language--based geo-guessing experiment shows that GPT-4 may currently encode insufficient knowledge about several geographic feature types on a global level. On a local level, we observe not only this insufficiency but also inter-regional disparities in GPT-4's geo-guessing performance on UNESCO World Heritage Sites that carry significance to both local and global populations, and the inter-regional disparities may become smaller as the geographic scale increases. Morever, whether assessing the geo-guessing performance on a global or local level, we find inter-model disparities in GPT-4's geo-guessing performance when comparing its unimodal and multimodal variants. We hope this work can initiate a discussion on geographic diversity as an ethical principle within the GIScience community in the face of global socio-technical challenges.

Construction of Complete Complementary Codes over Small Alphabet

Complete complementary codes (CCCs) play a vital role not only in wireless communication, particularly in multicarrier systems where achieving an interference-free environment is of paramount importance, but also in the construction of other codes that necessitate appropriate functions to meet the diverse demands within today's landscape of wireless communication evaluation. This research is focused on the area of constructing $q$-ary functions for both of {traditional and spectrally null constraint (SNC) CCCs}\footnote{When no codes in CCCs having zero components, we call it as traditonal CCCs, else, we call it as SNC-CCCs in this pape.} of flexible length, set size and alphabet. We construct traditional CCCs with lengths, defined as $L = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$, set sizes, defined as $K = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{n_i+1}$, and an alphabet size of $q=\prod_{i=1}^k p_i$, such that $p_1<p_2<\cdots<p_k $. The parameters $m_1, m_2, \ldots, m_k$ (each greater than or equal to $2$) are positive integers, while $n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_k$ are non-negative integers satisfying $n_i \leq m_i-1$, and the variable $k$ represents a positive integer. To achieve these specific parameters, we define $q$-ary functions over a domain $\mathbf{Z}_{p_1}^{m_1}\times \cdots \times \mathbf{Z}_{p_k}^{m_k}$ that is considered a proper subset of $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^m$ and encompasses $\prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$ vectors, where $\mathbf{Z}_{p_i}^{m_i}=\{0,1,\hdots,p_i-1\}^{m_i}$, and the value of $m$ is derived from the sum of $m_1, m_2, \ldots, m_k$. This organization of the domain allows us to encompass all conceivable integer-valued length sequences over the alphabet $\mathbb{Z}_q$. It has been demonstrated that by constraining a $q$-ary function that generates traditional CCCs, we can derive SNC-CCCs with identical length and alphabet, yet a smaller or equal set size compared to the traditional CCCs.

New Correlation Bound and Construction of Quasi-Complementary Code Sets

Quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) have attracted sustained research interests for simultaneously supporting more active users in multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) systems compared to complete complementary codes (CCCs). In this paper, we investigate a novel class of QCSSs composed of multiple CCCs. We derive a new aperiodic correlation lower bound for this type of QCSSs, which is tighter than the existing bounds for QCSSs. We then present a systematic construction of such QCSSs with a small alphabet size and low maximum correlation magnitude, and also show that the constructed aperiodic QCSSs can meet the newly derived bound asymptotically.

BER Analysis of SCMA-OFDM Systems in the Presence of Carrier Frequency Offset

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) building upon orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising wireless technology for supporting massive connectivity in future machine-type communication networks. However, the sensitivity of OFDM to carrier frequency offset (CFO) poses a major challenge because it leads to orthogonality loss and incurs intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper, we investigate the bit error rate (BER) performance of SCMA-OFDM systems in the presence of CFO over both Gaussian and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. We first model the ICI in SCMA-OFDM as Gaussian variables conditioned on a single channel realization for fading channels. The BER is then evaluated by averaging over all codeword pairs considering the fading statistics. Through simulations, we validate the accuracy of our BER analysis and reveal that there is a significant BER degradation for SCMA-OFDM systems when the normalized CFO exceeds 0.02.

Here Is Not There: Measuring Entailment-Based Trajectory Similarity for Location-Privacy Protection and Beyond

While the paths humans take play out in social as well as physical space, measures to describe and compare their trajectories are carried out in abstract, typically Euclidean, space. When these measures are applied to trajectories of actual individuals in an application area, alterations that are inconsequential in abstract space may suddenly become problematic once overlaid with geographic reality. In this work, we present a different view on trajectory similarity by introducing a measure that utilizes logical entailment. This is an inferential perspective that considers facts as triple statements deduced from the social and environmental context in which the travel takes place, and their practical implications. We suggest a formalization of entailment-based trajectory similarity, measured as the overlapping proportion of facts, which are spatial relation statements in our case study. With the proposed measure, we evaluate LSTM-TrajGAN, a privacy-preserving trajectory-generation model. The entailment-based model evaluation reveals potential consequences of disregarding the rich structure of geographic space (e.g., miscalculated insurance risk due to regional shifts in our toy example). Our work highlights the advantage of applying logical entailment to trajectory-similarity reasoning for location-privacy protection and beyond.

Enhanced Cross Z-Complementary Set and Its Application in Generalized Spatial Modulation

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is a novel multiple-antenna technique offering flexibility among spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, and the cost of RF chains. In this paper, a novel class of sequence sets, called enhanced cross Zcomplementary set (E-CZCS), is proposed for efficient training sequence design in broadband GSM systems. Specifically, an E-CZCS consists of multiple CZCSs possessing front-end and tail-end zero-correlation zones (ZCZs), whereby any two distinct CZCSs have a tail-end ZCZ when a novel type of cross-channel aperiodic correlation sums is considered. The theoretical upper bound on the ZCZ width is first derived, upon which optimal E-CZCSs with flexible parameters are constructed. For optimal channel estimation over frequency-selective channels, we introduce and evaluate a novel GSM training framework employing the proposed E-CZCSs.

Deep Learning Assisted Multiuser MIMO Load Modulated Systems for Enhanced Downlink mmWave Communications

This paper is focused on multiuser load modulation arrays (MU-LMAs) which are attractive due to their low system complexity and reduced cost for millimeter wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The existing precoding algorithm for downlink MU-LMA relies on a sub-array structured (SAS) transmitter which may suffer from decreased degrees of freedom and complex system configuration. Furthermore, a conventional LMA codebook with codewords uniformly distributed on a hypersphere may not be channel-adaptive and may lead to increased signal detection complexity. In this paper, we conceive an MU-LMA system employing a full-array structured (FAS) transmitter and propose two algorithms accordingly. The proposed FAS-based system addresses the SAS structural problems and can support larger numbers of users. For LMA-imposed constant-power downlink precoding, we propose an FAS-based normalized block diagonalization (FAS-NBD) algorithm. However, the forced normalization may result in performance degradation. This degradation, together with the aforementioned codebook design problems, is difficult to solve analytically. This motivates us to propose a Deep Learning-enhanced (FAS-DL-NBD) algorithm for adaptive codebook design and codebook-independent decoding. It is shown that the proposed algorithms are robust to imperfect knowledge of channel state information and yield excellent error performance. Moreover, the FAS-DL-NBD algorithm enables signal detection with low complexity as the number of bits per codeword increases.

Novel Power-Imbalanced Dense Codebooks for Reliable Multiplexing in Nakagami Channels

This paper studies enhanced dense code multiple access (DCMA) system design for downlink transmission over the Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. By studying the DCMA pairwise error probability (PEP) in a Nakagami-$m$ channel, a novel design metric called minimum logarithmic sum distance (MLSD) is first derived. With respect to the proposed MLSD, we introduce a new family of power-imbalanced dense codebooks by deleting certain rows of a special non-unimodular circulant matrix. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed dense codebooks lead to both larger minimum Euclidean distance and MLSD, thus yielding significant improvements of error performance over the existing sparse code multiple access and conventional unimodular DCMA schemes in Nakagami-$m$ fading channels under different overloading factors.

Enhancing Signal Space Diversity for SCMA Over Rayleigh Fading Channels

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising technique for the enabling of massive connectivity in future machine-type communication networks, but it suffers from a limited diversity order which is a bottleneck for significant improvement of error performance. This paper aims for enhancing the signal space diversity of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) by introducing quadrature component delay to the transmitted codeword of a downlink SCMA system in Rayleigh fading channels. Such a system is called SSD-SCMA throughout this work. By looking into the average mutual information (AMI) and the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the proposed SSD-SCMA, we develop novel codebooks by maximizing the derived AMI lower bound and a modified minimum product distance (MMPD), respectively. The intrinsic asymptotic relationship between the AMI lower bound and proposed MMPD based codebook designs is revealed. Numerical results show significant error performance improvement in the both uncoded and coded SSD-SCMA systems.
