Coexistence of competing orders with two energy gaps in real and momentum space in high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta

The superconducting phase of the high-Tc cuprates has been thought to be described by a single d-wave pairing order parameter. Recently, there has been growing evidence suggesting that another form of order, possibly inherited from the pseudogap phase above Tc, may coexist with superconductivity in the underdoped regime. Through a combined study of scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the observation of two distinct gaps (a small-gap and a large-gap) that coexist both in real space and in the anti-nodal region of momentum space in the superconducting phase of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta. We show that the small-gap is associated with superconductivity. The large-gap persists to temperatures above the transition temperature Tc and is found to be linked to short-range charge ordering. Remarkably, we find a strong, short-ranged correlation between the local small- and large- gap magnitudes suggesting that the superconductivity and charge ordering are affected by similar physical processes.

A distinct bosonic mode in an electron-doped high-transition-temperature superconductor

Despite recent advances in understanding high-transition-temperature (high-T c) superconductors, there is no consensus on the origin of the superconducting 'glue': that is, the mediator that binds electrons into superconducting pairs. The main contenders are lattice vibrations (phonons) and spin-excitations with the additional possibility of pairing without mediators. In conventional superconductors, phonon-mediated pairing was unequivocally established by data from tunnelling experiments. Proponents of phonons as the high-T c glue were therefore encouraged by the recent scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments on hole-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-delta (BSCCO) that reveal an oxygen lattice vibrational mode whose energy is anticorrelated with the superconducting gap energy scale. Here we report high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements of the electron-doped high-T c superconductor Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4 (PLCCO) (T c = 24 K) that reveal a bosonic excitation (mode) at energies of 10.5 plus/minus 2.5 meV. This energy is consistent with both spin-excitations in PLCCO measured by inelastic neutron scattering (resonance mode) and a low-energy acoustic phonon mode, but differs substantially from the oxygen vibrational mode identified in BSCCO. Our analysis of the variation of the local mode energy and intensity with the local gap energy scale indicates an electronic origin of the mode consistent with spin-excitations rather than phonons.

Nodal $d+id$ pairing and topological phases on the triangular lattice: unconventional superconducting state of Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O

We show that finite angular momentum pairing chiral superconductors on the triangular lattice have point zeroes in the complex gap function. A topological quantum phase transition takes place through a nodal superconducting state at a specific carrier density $x_c$ where the normal state Fermi surface crosses the isolated zeros. For spin singlet pairing, we show that the second nearest neighbor $d+id$-wave pairing can be the dominant pairing channel. The gapless critical state at $x_c\simeq0.25$ has six Dirac points and is topologically nontrivial with a $T^3$ spin relaxation rate below $T_c$. This picture provides a possible explanation for the unconventional superconducting state of Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O. Analyzing a pairing model with strong correlation using the Gutzwiller projection and symmetry arguments, we study these topological phases and phase transitions as a function of Na doping.

Itinerant and localized magnetism on the triangular lattice: sodium rich phases of Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We study the interplay between correlation, itinerant ferromagnetism and local moment formation on the electron doped triangular lattice of sodium cobaltates Na$_x$CoO$_2$. We find that strong correlation renormalizes the Stoner criterion and stabilizes the paramagnetic state for $x x_c$, ferromagnetic (FM) order emerges. The enhanced Na dopant potential fluctuations play a crucial role in the sodium rich phases and lead to an inhomogeneous FM state, exhibiting nonmagnetic Co$^{3+}$ patches, antiferromagnetic (AF) correlated regions, and FM clusters with AF domains. Hole doping the band insulator at x=1 leads to the formation of local moments near the Na vacancies and AF correlated magnetic clusters. We explain recent observations by neutron, $μ$SR, and NMR experiments on the evolution of the magnetic properties in the sodium rich phases.

Charge and spin order on the triangular lattice -- Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at $x=0.5$

The nature of electronic states due to strong correlation and geometric frustration on the triangular lattice is investigated in connection to the unconventional insulating state of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at $x=0.5$. We study an extended Hubbard model using a spatially unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation. We find a new class of charge and spin ordered states at $x=1/3$ and $x=0.5$ where antiferromagnetic (AF) frustration is alleviated via weak charge inhomogeneity. At $x=0.5$, we show that the $\sqrt{3}a\times2a$ off-plane Na dopant order induces weak $\sqrt{3}a\times1a$ charge order in the Co layer. The symmetry breaking enables successive $\sqrt{3}a\times1a$ AF and $2a\times2a$ charge/spin ordering transitions at low temperatures. The Fermi surface is truncated by the $2a\times2a$ hexagonal zone boundary into small electron and hole pockets. We study the phase structure and compare to recent experiments.

Correlating off-stoichiometric doping with nanoscale electronic disorder and quasiparticle interference pattern in high-$T_c$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

A microscopic theory is presented for the observed electronic disorder in superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The essential phenomenology is shown to be consistent with the existence of two types of interstitial oxygen dopants: those serving primarily as charge reserviors and those close to the apical plane contributing both carriers and electrostatic potential to the CuO$_2$ plane. The nonlinear screening of the latter produces nanoscale variations in the doped hole concentration, leading to electronic inhomogeneity. Based on an unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation of the extended t-$J$ model, we provide a consistent explanation of the correlation between the observed dopant location and the pairing gap and its spatial evolutions. We show that the oxygen dopants are the primary cause of both the pairing gap disorder and the quasiparticle interference pattern.

Inhomogeneous states with checkerboard order in the t-J Model

We study inhomogeneous states in the t-J model using an unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation. We find that $pa\times pa$ checkerboard order, where $p$ is a doping dependent number, emerges from Fermi surface instabilities of both the staggered flux phase and the Fermi liquid state with realistic band parameters. In both cases, the checkerboard order develops at wave vectors $(\pm 2π/pa,0)$, $(0,\pm2π/pa)$ that are tied to the peaks of the wave-vector dependent susceptibility, and is of the Lomer-Rice-Scott type. The properties of such periodic, inhomogeneous states are discussed in connection to the checkerboard patterns observed by STM in underdoped cuprates.

Edge-currents in superconductors with a broken time-reversal symmetry

We analyze edge currents and edge bands at the surface of a time-reversal symmetry breaking d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} superconductor. We show that the currents have large Friedel oscillations with two interfering frequencies: \sqrt{2}k_F from sub-gap states, and 2 k_F from the continuum. The results are based independently on a self-consistent slave-boson mean field theory for the t-J model on a triangular lattice, and on a T-matrix scattering theory calculation. The shape of the edge-state band, as well as the particular frequency \sqrt{2}k_F of the Friedel oscillations are attributes unique for the d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} case, and may be used as a fingerprint for its identification. Extensions to different time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors can be achieved within the same approach.

Vortices, tunneling and deconfinement in bilayer excitonic quantum Hall superfluid

The physics of vortices, instantons and deconfinement is studied for layered superfluids in connection to bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling fraction nu=1. We develop an effective gauge theory taking into account both vortices and instantons induced by interlayer tunneling. The renormalization group flow of the gauge charge and the instanton fugacity shows that the coupling of the gauge field to vortex matter produces a continuous transition between the confining phase of free instantons and condensed vortices and a deconfined gapless superfluid where magnetic charges are bound into dipoles. The interlayer tunneling conductance and the layer imbalance induced inhomogeneous exciton condensate are discussed in connection to experiments.

Electron correlation and Fermi surface topology of Na$_x$CoO$_2$

The electronic structure of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ revealed by recent photoemission experiments shows important deviations from band theory predictions. The six small Fermi surface pockets predicted by LDA calculations have not been observed as the associated $e_g^\prime$ band fails to cross the Fermi level for a wide range of sodium doping concentration $x$. In addition, significant bandwidth renormalizations of the $t_{2g}$ complex have been observed. We show that these discrepancies are due to strong electronic correlations by studying the multi-orbital Hubbard model in the Hartree-Fock and strong-coupling Gutzwiller approximation. The quasiparticle dispersion and the Fermi surface topology obtained in the presence of strong local Coulomb repulsion are in good agreement with experiments.

Pseudogap, competing order and coexistence of staggered flux and d-wave pairing in high-temperature superconductors

We study the t-J-V model of a doped Mott insulator in connection to high-T_c superconductors. The nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction (V) is treated quantum mechanically on equal footing as the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction (J). Motivated by the SU(2) symmetry at half-filling, we construct a large-N theory which allows a systematic study of the interplay between staggered flux order and superconductivity upon doping. We solve the model in the large-N limit and obtain the ground state properties and the phase diagram as a function of doping. We discuss the competition and the coexistence of the staggered flux and the d-wave superconductivity in the underdoped regime and the disappearance of superconductivity in the overdoped regime

Tunneling, dissipation, and superfluid transition in quantum Hall bilayers

We study bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau level filling factor $ν=1$ in the presence of interlayer tunneling and coupling to a dissipative normal fluid. Describing the dynamics of the interlayer phase by an effective quantum dissipative XY model, we show that there exists a critical dissipation $σ_c$ set by the conductance of the normal fluid. For $σ> σ_c$, interlayer tunnel splitting drives the system to a $ν=1$ quantum Hall state. For $σ<σ_c$, interlayer tunneling is irrelevant at low temperatures, the system exhibits a superfluid transition to a collective quantum Hall state supported by spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. The resulting phase structure and the behavior of the in-plane and tunneling currents are studied in connection to experiments.

Ground State and Spectral Properties of a Quantum Impurity in d-Wave Superconductors

The variational approach of Gunnarsson and Schönhammer to the Anderson impurity model is generalized to study d-wave superconductors in the presence of dilute spin-1/2 impurities. We show that the local moment is screened when the hybridization exceeds a nonzero critical value at which the ground state changes from a spin doublet to a spin singlet. The electron spectral functions are calculated in both phases. We find that while a Kondo resonance develops above the Fermi level in the singlet phase, the spectral function exhibits a low-energy spectral peak below the Fermi level in the spin doublet phase. The origin of such a ``virtual Kondo resonance'' is the existence of low-lying collective excitations in the spin-singlet sector. We discuss our results in connection to recent spectroscopic experiments on Zn doped high-T$_c$ superconductors.

Phase Diagram for Quantum Hall Bilayers at $ν=1$

We present a phase diagram for a double quantum well bilayer electron gas in the quantum Hall regime at total filling factor $ν=1$, based on exact numerical calculations of the topological Chern number matrix and the (inter-layer) superfluid density. We find three phases: a quantized Hall state with pseudo-spin superfluidity, a quantized Hall state with pseudo-spin ``gauge-glass'' order, and a decoupled composite Fermi liquid. Comparison with experiments provides a consistent explanation of the observed quantum Hall plateau, Hall drag plateau and vanishing Hall drag resistance, as well as the zero-bias conductance peak effect, and suggests some interesting points to pursue experimentally.

Role of disorder in half-filled high Landau levels

We study the effects of disorder on the quantum Hall stripe phases in half-filled high Landau levels using exact numerical diagonalization. We show that, in the presence of weak disorder, a compressible, striped charge density wave, becomes the true ground state. The projected electron density profile resembles that of a smectic liquid. With increasing disorder strength W, we find that there exists a critical value, W_c \sim 0.12 e^2/εl, where a transition/crossover to an isotropic phase with strong local electron density fluctuations takes place. The many-body density of states are qualitatively distinguishable in these two phases and help elucidate the nature of the transition.

Local Moment Formation in the Superconducting State of a Doped Mott Insulator

A microscopic theory is presented for the local moment formation near a non-magnetic impurity or a copper defect in high-T_c superconductors. We use a renormalized meanfield theory of the t-J model for a doped Mott insulator and study the fully self-consistent, spatially unrestricted solutions of the d-wave superconducting (SC) state in both the spin S=0 and S=1/2 sectors. We find a transition from the singlet d-wave SC state to a spin doublet SC state when the renormalized exchange coupling exceeds a doping dependent critical value. The induced S=1/2 moment is staggered and localized around the impurity. It arises from the binding of an S=1/2 nodal quasiparticle excitation to the impurity. The local density of states spectrum is calculated and connections to NMR and STM experiments are discussed.

Electron-electron interactions, quantum Coulomb gap, and dynamical scaling near integer quantum Hall transitions

The effects of electron-electron interactions on the bulk tunneling density of states (TDOS) are studied near the integer quantum Hall transitions (IQHT). Taking into account the dynamical screening of the interactions in the critical conducting state, we show that the behavior of the TDOS is significantly altered from its noninteracting counterpart. For Coulomb interaction, we demonstrate that the TDOS vanishes linearly at the Fermi level according to a quantum Coulomb gap form with a nonuniversal slope. For short-range interactions, the TDOS is found to follow a power-law with an exponent proportional to the interaction strength. Since short-range interactions are known to be irrelevant perturbations at the non-interacting critical point, we predict that upon scaling, the power-law is smeared, leading to a finite zero bias TDOS. However, the approach to the zero-bias value is described by a power-law with a universal exponent determined by the scaling dimension of short-range interactions. We also consider the case of quasi-1D samples with edges and find that the TDOS becomes dependent of the Hall conductance due to an altered boundary condition for diffusion. For short-range interactions, the TDOS of a quasi-1D strip is linear near the Fermi level with a slope inversely proportional to the resistivity in the perturbative limit. These results are in qualitative agreement with the bulk tunneling experiments. We discuss recent developments in understanding the role played by electron-electron interactions at the IQHT and the implications of these results on dynamical scaling of the transition width. We argue that for the long-range Coulomb interaction, the existence of the quantum Coulomb gap in the quantum critical regime of the transition gives rise to the observed dynamical exponent z=1.

Inhomogeneous d-wave superconducting state of a doped Mott insulator

Recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements discovered remarkable electronic inhomogeneity, i.e. nano-scale spatial variations of the local density of states (LDOS) and the superconducting energy gap, in the high-Tc superconductor BSCCO. Based on the experimental findings we conjectured that the inhomogeneity arises from variations in local oxygen doping level and may be generic of doped Mott insulators which behave rather unconventionally in screening the dopant ionic potentials at atomic scales comparable to the short coherence length. Here, we provide theoretical support for this picture. We study a doped Mott insulator within a generalized t-J model, where doping is accompanied by ionic Coulomb potentials centered in the BiO plane. We calculate the LDOS spectrum, the integrated LDOS, and the local superconducting gap, make detailed comparisons to experiments, and find remarkable agreement with the experimental data. We emphasize the unconventional screening in a doped Mott insulator and show that nonlinear screening dominates at nano-meter scales which is the origin of the electronic inhomogeneity. It leads to strong inhomogeneous redistribution of the local hole density and promotes the notion of a local doping concentration. We find that the inhomogeneity structure manifests itself at all energy scales in the STM tunneling differential conductance, and elucidate the similarity and the differences between the data obtained in the constant tunneling current mode and the same data normalized to reflect constant tip-to-sample distance. We also discuss the underdoped case where nonlinear screening of the ionic potential turns the spatial electronic structure into a percolative mixture of patches with smaller pairing gaps embedded in a background with larger gaps to single particle excitations.
