Incidence stratifications on Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces, and an application to Poisson structures

Given a smooth curve on a smooth surface, the Hilbert scheme of the surface is stratified according to the length of the intersection with the curve. The strata are highly singular. We show that this stratification admits a natural log-resolution, namely the stratified blowup. As a consequence, the induced Poisson structure on the Hilbert scheme of a Poisson surface has unobstructed deformations.

On the syzygies of reducible curves

A theorem of Green says that a line bundle of degree at least $2g+1+p$ on a smooth curve $X$ of genus $g$ has property $N_p$. We prove a similar conclusion for certain singular, reducible curves $X$ under suitable degree bounds over all irreducible components of $X$.

Structure of the cycle map for Hilbert schemes of families of nodal curves

We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We determine the relevant cotangent sheaves and complexes. We determine the structure of certain projective bundles called node scrolls, which play an important role in the geometry of Hilbert schemes.

Fibres of embedding dimension 2 in generic projections

We consider a general fibre of given length in a generic projection of a va- riety. Under the assumption that the fibre is of local embedding dimension 2 or less, an assumption which can be checked in many cases, we prove that the fibre is reduced and its image on the projected variety is an ordinary multiple point.

Modifications of Hodge bundles and enumerative geometry : the stable hyperelliptic locus

We study the stable hyperelliptic locus, i.e. the closure, in the Deligne- Mumford moduli space of stable curves, of the locus of smooth hyperelliptic curves. Working on a suitable blowup of the relative Hilbert scheme (of degree 2) associated to a family of stable curves, we construct a bundle map ('degree-2 Brill-Noether') from a modification of the Hodge bundle to a tautological bundle, whose degeneracy locus is the natural lift of the stable hyperelliptic locus plus a simple residual scheme. Using intersection theory on Hilbert schemes and Fulton-Macpherson residual intersection theory, the class of the structure sheaf and various other sheaves supported on the stable hyperelliptic locus can be computed by Porteous' formula.

Deformations of log-Lagrangian submanifolds of Poisson manifolds

We consider Lagrangian-like submanifolds in certain even-dimensional 'symplectic-like' Poisson manifolds. We show, under suitable transversality hypotheses, that the pair consisting of the ambient Poisson manifold and the submanifold has unobstructed deformations and that the deformations automatically preserve the Lagrangian-like property.

Unobstructedness of filling secants and the Gruson-Peskine general projection theorem

We prove an unobstructedness result for deformations of subvarieties constrained by intersections with another, fixed subvariety. We deduce smoothness and expected-dimension results for multiple-point loci of generic projections, mainly from a point or a line, or for fibres of embedding dimension 2 or less. The current version is a substantial enhancement of the previous one, including for the first time results on projection from a line.

Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology and deformations of schemes and maps

We introduce a notion of Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology associated to a semi-simplicial Lie algebra (SELA). For an algebraic scheme $X$ over $\C$, we construct a tangent SELA $\t_X$ and show that the Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology of $\t_X$ is related to infinitesimal deformations of $X$.

Tautological module and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of nodal curves

We study intersection theory on the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal-or-smooth curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension. We introduce an additive group called 'discriminant module', generated by diagonal loci, node scrolls, and twists thereof, and determine the action of the discriminant or big diagonal divisor on this group by intersection. We show that this suffices to determine arbitrary polynomials in Chern classes, in particular Chern numbers, for the tautological vector bundles on the Hilbert schemes, which are closely related to enumerative geometry. The latest version includes some new explicit computations and reference to a computer program due to G. Liu implementing our intersection calculus.

Echelon modification of vector bundles

We study a filtered generalization of the operation of elementary modification of vector bundles. The generalization is motivated by applications to the degeneration theory of linear systems.

Canonical systems and their limits on stable curves

We propose an object called 'sepcanonical system' on a stable curve $X_0$ which is to serve as limiting object- distinct from other such limits introduced previously- for the canonical system, as a smooth curve degenerates to $X_0$. First for curves which cannot be separated by 2 or fewer nodes, the so-called '2-inseparable' curves, the sepcanonical system is just the sections of the dualizing sheaf, which is not very ample iff $X_0$ is a limit of smooth hyperelliptic curves (such $X_0$ are called 2-inseparable hyperelliptics). For general, 2-separable curves $X_0$ this assertion is false, leading us to introduce the sepcanonical system, which is a collection of linear systems on the '2-inseparable parts' of $X_0$, each associated to a different twisted limit of the canonical system, where the entire collection varies smoothly with $X_0$. To define sepcanonical system, we must endow the curve with extra structure called an 'azimuthal structure'. We show that the sepcanonical system is 'essentially very ample' unless the curve is a tree-like arrangement of 2-inseparable hyperelliptics. In a subsequent paper, we will show that the latter property is equivalent to the curve being a limit of smooth hyperelliptics, and will essentially give defining equation for the closure of the locus of smooth hyperelliptic curves in the moduli space of stable curves. The current version includes additional references to, among others, Catanese, Maino, Esteves and Caporaso.

On the Nagata Problem

Nagata has conjectured that the following statement (N_r) holds for all $r\geq 10$: (N_r) if $P_1,...P_r \in {\mathbb P}^2$ are generic points then any plane curve $C$ satisfies $\sum_1^r mult_{P_i}(C)\leq \sqrt{r} deg(C)$. Nagata proved (N_r) whenever $r$ is a perfect square. Here we prove (N_r) provided $r=k^2+α,1\leqα\leq2k,k\geq 3$ and either (i) $α$ is odd and $α\geq \sqrt{2k}$ or (ii) $α$ is even and at lest 6, and the fractional part of $\sqrt{r}$ is at most $2(\sqrt{2}-1)$.

Geometry and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of families of nodal curves

We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautological vector bundles, which are closely related to enumerative geometry.

Lie Atoms and their deformation theory

A Lie atom is essentially a pair of Lie algebras and its deformation theory is that of deformations with respect to one algebra together with a trivialization with respect to the other. Such deformations occur commonly in Algebraic Geometry, for instance as deformations of subvarieties of a fixed ambient variety. Here we study some basic notions related to Lie atoms, focussing especially on their deformation theory, in particular the universal deformation. We introduce Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology, which yields the deformation ring, and show that, under suitable hypotheses, infinitesimal deformations are classified by certain Kodaira-Spencer data.(minor corrections Feb'06/May'07; paper is to appear in GAFA)

Cycle map on Hilbert schemes of nodal curves

We study the structure of the relative Hilbert scheme for a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its natural cycle map to the relative symmetric product. We show that the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We discuss some applications and connections, notably with birational geometry and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces. Revised version corrects some minor errors.
