Machine Learning-Guided Screening of Advantageous Solvents for Solid Polymer Electrolytes in Lithium Metal Batteries

Trace residual solvents in solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) significantly affect electrolyte and interface properties, where optimal selection enhances ionic conductivity and transference numbers. However, solvent complexity hinders general screening methods. We establish a universal criterion linking electronic (HOMO, LUMO) and macroscopic properties (dielectric constant, dipole moment, polarizability) via machine learning on an approximately 10,000-solvent dataset from high-throughput DFT. Two solvents, N-methoxy-N-methyl-2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide and 2,2,2-trifluoro-N,N-dimethylacetamide, were identified. Experimental incorporation of trace N-methoxy-N-methyl-2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) matrix achieves a 4.5 V window, 5.5x10^-4 S cm^-1 conductivity (30 C), and 0.78 Li+ transference number. The cell retains 86.7% capacity over 500 cycles (LiFePO4) and 98.7% after 200 cycles at 2C (LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2), outperforming 2,2,2-trifluoro-N,N-dimethylacetamide, dimethylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and dimethyl sulfoxide. This synergy enables balanced ion transport, wide stability, and cycling durability, advancing safer, high-energy lithium metal batteries. Our integrated approach establishes a solvent screening paradigm for rational SPE design, accelerating next-generation battery development.

A Temporal Retrieval Method for Modulated Electron Bunches via Adaptive Kernel Reconstruction

Femtosecond electron beams with complex modulation play a crucial role in applications such as X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) and plasma wakefield accelerators. However, diagnostics for the electron beam current profile still face challenges with complex structure. In this letter, we propose a novel temporal retrieval algorithm for the coherent transition radiation (CTR) diagnostics of complex modulated electron beams. Starting from the time-frequency analysis of the electron bunch train, the algorithm separates and reconstructs the high- and low-frequency components. A temporal kernel was derived from the inverse sampling of the measured spectrum to construct the high-frequency component, while the low-frequency envelope was composed of several basis functions. Tested on the electron bunch trains from the complex multi-gaussian model and bunching-enhanced coherent harmonic generation, the algorithm successfully reconstructed the temporal signals and achieves better performance than the Kramers-Kronig method. This method is expected to crucial provide temporal evidence for potential electron beam modulation schemes, and will enable broad prospects for future applications.

Unified Flow Rule of Undeveloped and Fully Developed Dense Granular Flows Down Rough Inclines

We report on chute measurements of the free-surface velocity $v$ in dense flows of spheres and diverse sands and spheres-sand mixtures down rough inclines. These and previous measurements are inconsistent with standard flow rules, in which the Froude number $v/\sqrt{gh}$ scales linearly with $h/h_s$ or $(\tanθ/μ_r)^2h/h_s$, where $μ_r$ is the dynamic friction coefficient, $h$ the flow thickness, and $h_s(θ)$ its smallest value that permits a steady, uniform dense flow state at a given inclination angle $θ$. This is because the characteristic length $L$ a flow needs to fully develop can exceed the chute or travel length $l$ and because neither rule is universal for fully developed flows across granular materials. We use a dimensional analysis motivated by a recent unification of sediment transport to derive a flow rule that solves both problems in accordance with our and previous measurements: $v=v_\infty[1-\exp(-l/L)]^{1/2}$, with $v_\infty\proptoμ_r^{3/2}\left[(\tanθ-μ_r)h\right]^{4/3}$ and $L\proptoμ_r^3\left[(\tanθ-μ_r)h\right]^{5/3}h$.
