Wafer-scale monolithic integration of Ce:YIG films and magneto-optical isolators on silicon

Silicon integrated cerium doped yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) thin films are promising candidates for integrated nonreciprocal photonic devices, cryogenic photonic modulators and optical computing applications. However, previously reported Ce:YIG thin film on silicon is limited to milimeter sizes. Wafer-scale integration and non-destructive characterization of high quality Ce:YIG thin films on silicon has been elusive. Here, we report growth of 4-inch wafer-scale Ce:YIG thin films on silicon substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. Strong Faraday effect of 2318 deg/cm, low propagation loss of 80 dB/cm and excellent thickness uniformity of 3.5% is demonstrated across the 4-inch silicon wafer. Furthermore, a custom designed wafer-scale, non-destructive magneto-ellipsometry was established to characterize the film thickness, optical constants and magneto-optical constants across the wafer. Wafer-scale integration of ring resonator type magneto-optical isolators are also demonstrated. Our work demonstrates a step forward toward wafer-scale heterogeneous integration and characterization of magneto-optical thin films on silicon, providing material candidates for non-reciprocal photonic device arrays, magneto-optical in-memory computing networks and integrated magneto-optic magnetometers.

Localized crystallization of Ce:YIG thin films on Si using CO2 laser annealing for integrated nonreciprocal photonic device applications

Laser annealing (LA) technique has emerged as an effective method for localized crystallization of magneto-optical (MO) garnet thin films on semiconductor substrates. However, no studies have explored the crystallization and magneto-optical (MO) properties of cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG, Ce1Y2Fe5O12) thin films for integrated photonic device applications using LA technique. In this study, we provide a comprehensive investigation into the laser annealing of Ce:YIG films deposited on SiO2 substrates and silicon nitride photonic waveguides for integrated nonreciprocal photonic device applications. Garnet phase was successfully observed in films grown on SiO2 substrates, and SiN waveguides with laser annealing of sputtered Ce:YIG films on top of a laser annealed Y3Fe5O12 seed layer. The magneto-optical (MO) properties of Ce:YIG films on oxidized Si substrates were found to be comparable to those prepared by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) type optical isolator based on Ce:YIG film on SiN was fabricated, exhibiting a saturation Faraday rotation of -2317.7 deg/cm and propagation loss of 188.2 dB/cm. Isolation ratio of 27.1 dB and insertion loss of 10.1 dB were achieved at 1552.7 nm wavelength.

Ai2-Kit: Streamlining AI-Accelerated Ab Initio Workflows for Complex Chemical Systems

Molecular simulations of complex chemical systems, such as catalysis, electrochemistry, and energy storage, often need to capture the interplay of effects such as electronic structure, finite-temperature fluctuations, and electric-field response. Such complexity is difficult to address with traditional ab initio calculations, which are limited by the time and length scales they can reach. AI-accelerated ab initio (AI2) methods use machine learning potentials trained on first-principles data to replace expensive electronic-structure calculations, extending ab initio accuracy to these regimes, but their routine application requires reliable workflows that connect first-principles calculations, model training, molecular dynamics, enhanced sampling, trajectory analysis, and HPC orchestration. Here we present ai2-kit, a software toolkit for developing accessible, reproducible, and extensible AI2 workflows. ai2-kit provides high-semantic-density command-line interfaces and Python APIs for structure and dataset conversion, batch task generation, active-learning screening, job orchestration, and workflow recovery. We demonstrate ai2-kit in four representative applications: active-learning-based machine learning potential construction, free-energy perturbation for redox and acid-base processes, electrochemical machine learning potentials for electrified interfaces, and spectroscopies from machine learning molecular dynamics. ai2-kit also provides AI-agent skills that help users adapt these use cases into customized workflows for their own chemical systems and computational software stacks. Together, ai2-kit helps turn AI2 methods from bespoke computational protocols into reusable and extensible workflows for complex chemical systems, from model construction to property prediction.

Gradient Flow Drifting: Generative Modeling via Wasserstein Gradient Flows of KDE-Approximated Divergences

We reveal a precise mathematical framework about a new family of generative models which we call Gradient Flow Drifting. With this framework, we prove an equivalence between the recently proposed Drifting Model and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the forward KL divergence under kernel density estimation (KDE) approximation. Specifically, we prove that the drifting field of drifting model (arXiv:2602.04770) equals, up to a bandwidth-squared scaling factor, the difference of KDE log-density gradients $\nabla \log p_{\mathrm{kde}} - \nabla \log q_{\mathrm{kde}}$, which is exactly the particle velocity field of the Wasserstein-2 gradient flow of $KL(q\|p)$ with KDE-approximated densities. Besides that, this broad family of generative models can also include MMD-based generators, which arises as special cases of Wasserstein gradient flows of different divergences under KDE approximation. We provide a concise identifiability proof, and a theoretically grounded mixed-divergence strategy. We combine reverse KL and $\chi^2$ divergence gradient flows to simultaneously avoid mode collapse and mode blurring, and extend this method onto Riemannian manifold which loosens the constraints on the kernel function, and makes this method more suitable for the semantic space. Preliminary experiments on synthetic benchmarks validate the framework.

Unlock giant nonreciprocity via multi-valued behavior of non-Hermitian zero-index materials

Although Einstein's field equations are time-independent, the multivalued feature of the horizon of a blackhole naturally enables the one-way transmission, leading to the strong arrow of time from the time-independent gravitational interaction. Here we experimentally demonstrate a photonic analogue of this principle and reveal the infinite nonreciprocity of the time-reversal-symmetric Maxwell equations. By designing a non-Hermitian zero-index magneto-optical metawaveguide, we introduce multivalued feature to this metawaveguide's complex eigenspace via an exceptional point with non-zero residue, bringing nonlocal, path-dependent historical memory to the system. Hence, a weak magneto-optical response can direct forward and backward waves to two photonic branches with largely distinct momenta and losses, leading to the optical nonreciprocity far beyond the limitation imposed by the magneto-optical material. We fabricated an a-Si/Ce:YIG metawaveguide, achieving nonreciprocal phase shift of 47.78 rad/mm and nonreciprocal loss of 53.9 dB/mm near 1575 nm, exceeding state-of-the-art nonreciprocal devices by an order of magnitude. Our principle universally applies from microwave to visible frequencies, leading to compact isolators, circulators, and sensors. Our principle can also be extended to nonreciprocal acoustic, elastic, and thermal systems. The proposed new paradigm -- geometry-based strong arrow of time in covariant and reversible physical systems -- has broad implications in many disciplines including string theory, cosmology, and astronomy.

Nonreciprocal Optical Routing in Multi-port Magneto-Optical Devices on Silicon

Nonreciprocal optical devices are key components in photonic integrated circuits for light reflection blocking and routing. Most reported silicon integrated nonreciprocal optical devices to date were unit devices. To allow complex signal routing between multi-ports in photonic networks, multi-port magneto-optical (MO) nonreciprocal photonic devices are desired. In this study, we report experimental demonstration of a silicon integrated 5*5 multiport nonreciprocal photonic device based on magneto-optical waveguides. By introducing different nonreciprocal phase shift effect to planar photonic waveguides, the device focuses light to different ports for both forward and backward propagation. The device shows designable nonreciprocal transmission between 5*5 ports, achieving 16 dB isolation ratio and -18 dB crosstalk.

YbNi$_4$Mg: Superheavy fermion with enhanced Wilson ratio and magnetocaloric effect

A comprehensive study of the low-temperature properties of YbNi$_4$Mg has revealed evidence of a superheavy-fermion state, characterized by a large electronic specific-heat coefficient $\gamma_0$ $\approx$ 5.65 J mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and an elevated Wilson ratio $R_W$ = 32.1. No magnetic ordering was observed down to 70 mK; however, a broad maximum appears in the specific heat at $T^*$ = 0.3 K, along with a shoulder in the derivative of susceptibility d$\chi$/d$T$ and resistivity d$\rho$/d$T$. These features indicate a cooperative yet short-ranged magnetism entwined with the superheavy Fermi liquid. The large Wilson ratio, which is also detected in other superheavy-fermion compounds lacking long-range order, might be a signature of residual spin fluctuations. Applying a weak magnetic field of $\sim$0.1 T induces a metamagnetic-like crossover, as demonstrated by the quasi-adiabatic demagnetization measurements showing a broad minimum in the temperature-field trace. Here, an enhanced magnetocaloric cooling effect stemming from the field-sensitive superheavy-fermion state is observed, rivaling that of the well-established insulating magnetic coolants like the rare-earth garnet Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$.

An 18.9-minute Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsator Crossing the 'Hertzsprung Gap' of Hot Subdwarfs

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) represent a new and rare class of hot pulsating stars with unusually large amplitudes and short periods. Up to now, only 24 confirmed BLAPs have been identified from more than one billion monitored stars, including a group with pulsation period longer than $\sim 20$ min (classical BLAPs, hereafter) and the other group with pulsation period below $\sim 8$ min. The evolutionary path that could give rise to such kinds of stellar configurations is unclear. Here we report on a comprehensive study of the peculiar BLAP discovered by the Tsinghua University - Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), TMTS J035143.63+584504.2 (TMTS-BLAP-1). This new BLAP has an 18.9 min pulsation period and is similar to the BLAPs with a low surface gravity and an extended helium-enriched envelope, suggesting that it is a low-gravity BLAP at the shortest-period end. In particular, the long-term monitoring data reveal that this pulsating star has an unusually large rate of period change, P_dot/P=2.2e-6/yr. Such a significant and positive value challenges its origins from both helium-core pre-white-dwarfs and core helium-burning subdwarfs, but is consistent with that derived from shell helium-burning subdwarfs. The particular pulsation period and unusual rate of period change indicate that TMTS-BLAP-1 is at a short-lived (~10^6 yr) phase of shell-helium ignition before the stable shell-helium burning; in other words, TMTS-BLAP-1 is going through a "Hertzsprung gap" of hot subdwarfs.

Wettability of graphite under 2D confinement

The thermodynamics of solid/liquid interfaces under nanoconfinement has tremendous implications for liquid transport properties. Here using molecular dynamics, we investigate graphite nanoslits and study how the water/graphite interfacial tension changes with the degree of confinement. We found that, for nanochannel heights between 0.7nm and 2.6nm, graphite becomes more hydrophobic than in bulk, and that the value of the surface tension oscillates before eventually converging towards a constant value for larger slits. The value of the surface tension is correlated with the slip length of the fluid and explained in terms of the effective and interfacial density, hydration pressure and friction coefficient. The study clearly indicates that there is a critical channel height of 0.9nm (achievable experimentally1) at which the surface tension reaches its highest value, but the water diffusion across the channel is at its minimum. The structural analysis shows that for this pore size a transition between a 2D and 3D hydrogen bond network is accompanied by an abrupt increase in conformational entropy. Our results show that the wettability of solid surfaces can change under nanoconfinement and the data can be used to interpret the experimental permeability data.

Minute-cadence Observations of the LAMOST Fields with the TMTS: I. Methodology of Detecting Short-period Variables and Results from the first-year Survey

Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), located at Xinglong Station of NAOC, has a field of view upto 18 deg^2. The TMTS has started to monitor the LAMOST sky areas since 2020, with the uninterrupted observations lasting for about 6 hours on average for each sky area and a cadence of about 1 minute. Here we introduce the data analysis and preliminary scientific results for the first-year observations, which covered 188 LAMOST plates ( about 1970 deg^2). These observations have generated over 4.9 million uninterrupted light curves, with at least 100 epochs for each of them. These light curves correspond to 4.26 million Gaia-DR2 sources, among which 285 thousand sources are found to have multi-epoch spectra from the LAMOST. By analysing these light curves with the Lomb-Scargle periodograms, we identify more than 3700 periodic variable star candidates with periods below 7.5 hours, primarily consisting of eclipsing binaries and Delta Scuti stars. Those short-period binaries will provide important constraints on theories of binary evolution and possible sources for space gravitational wave experiments in the future. Moreover, we also identified 42 flare stars by searching rapidly-evolving signals in the light curves. The densely-sampled light curves from the TMTS allow us to better quantify the shapes and durations for these flares.
