Development of Neutron Transmutation Doped Germanium (NTD-Ge) for Cryogenic Applications

This paper presents the systematic fabrication and characterization of cryogenic thermometers based on neutron transmutation-doped germanium (NTD-Ge). High-purity (10N) germanium samples were irradiated by thermal neutrons with different fluences at the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR). After irradiation and a six-month cooling-down period, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements were performed to characterize irradiation-induced defects and carrier concentrations in the NTD-Ge samples. Utilizing standard semiconductor fabrication techniques, point electrodes were deposited onto the processed samples to fabricate functional NTD-Ge cryogenic thermometers. The low-temperature resistance performance of the devices was characterized down to 20 mK on a millikelvin range cryogenic test platform. The measured temperature dependence of resistance follows Mott's law, showing excellent agreement across the full measured range. The extracted T0 is consistent with expectations. These results collectively verified both the applicability of the thermometers in cryogenic system and the reliability of the fabrication procedure.

The development of a high granular crystal calorimeter prototype of VLAST

Very Large Area gamma-ray Space Telescope (VLAST) is the next-generation flagship space observatory for high-energy gamma-ray detection proposed by China. The observation energy range covers from MeV to TeV and beyond, with acceptance of 10 m^2sr. The calorimeter serves as a crucial subdetector of VLAST, responsible for high-precision energy measurement and electron/proton discrimination. This discrimination capability is essential for accurately identifying gamma-ray events among the background of charged particles. To accommodate such an extensive energy range, a high dynamic range readout scheme employing dual avalanche photodiodes (APDs) has been developed, achieving a remarkable dynamic range of 10^6. Furthermore, a high granular prototype based on bismuth germanate (BGO) cubic scintillation crystals has been developed. This high granularity enables detailed imaging of the particle showers, improving both energy resolution and particle identification. The prototype's performance is evaluated through cosmic ray testing, providing valuable data for optimizing the final calorimeter design for VLAST.

Unfolding environmental $γ$ flux spectrum with portable CZT detector

Environmental $γ$-rays constitute a crucial source of background in various nuclear, particle and quantum physics experiments. To evaluate the flux rate and the spectrum of $γ$ background, we have developed a novel and straightforward approach to reconstruct the environmental $γ$ flux spectrum by applying a portable CZT $γ$ detector and iterative Bayesian unfolding, which possesses excellent transferability for broader applications. In this paper, the calibration and GEANT4 Monte-Carlo modeling of the CZT detector, the unfolding procedure as well as the uncertainty estimation are demonstrated in detail. The reconstructed spectrum reveals an environmental $γ$ flux intensity of $3.3\pm 0.9\times 10^{7}$~ (m$^2\cdot$sr$\cdot$hour)$^{-1}$ ranging from 73 to 3033~keV, along with characteristic peaks primarily arising from $^{232}$Th series, $^{238}$U series and $^{40}$K. We also give an instance of background rate evaluation with the unfolded spectrum for validation of the approach.

Measurement of reactor thermal neutron fluence of NTD-Ge by activation High-Purity Ge itself

In neutron transmutation doped germanium, the thermal neutron fluence of reactor irradiation is as high as 10$^{18}$~n$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. For radiological safety reasons, general Co or Au neutron flux monitors cannot be easily used. We have experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the X-rays emitted by the NTD-Ge itself to determine the absolute thermal neutron fluence for the first time. A Micro-Megas Detector (MMD) and a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) are set up to detect the tagging KX-rays with 9.2 keV and 10.3 keV cascading from the decays of $^{71}$Ge. Combined the detection efficiencies calculated by GEANT4, neutron fluence results given with proper accuracy by MMD and SDD are in a good agreement with each other.

Energy correction based on fluorescence attenuation of DAMPE

The major scientific goals of DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) are to study cosmic-ray electrons (including positrons) and gamma rays from 5 GeV to 10 TeV and nuclei from Z = 1 to 26 up to 100 TeV. The deposited energy measured by the Bismuth Germanate Oxide (BGO) calorimeter of DAMPE is affected by fluorescence attenuation in BGO crystals that are 600 mm long. In this work, an in-orbit attenuation calibration method is reported, and energy correction of the sensitive detector unit of the BGO calorimeter is also presented.

Calibration and Status of the 3D Imaging Calorimeter of DAMPE for Cosmic Ray Physics on Orbit

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) developed in China was designed to search for evidence of dark matter particles by observing primary cosmic rays and gamma rays in the energy range from 5 GeV to 10 TeV. Since its launch in December 2015, a large quantity of data has been recorded. With the data set acquired during more than a year of operation in space, a precise time-dependent calibration for the energy measured by the BGO ECAL has been developed. In this report, the instrumentation and development of the BGO Electromagnetic Calorimeter (BGO ECAL) are briefly described. The calibration on orbit, including that of the pedestal, attenuation length, minimum ionizing particle peak, and dynode ratio, is discussed, and additional details about the calibration methods and performance in space are presented.

Temperature Dependence Calibration and Correction of the DAMPE BGO Electromagnetic Calorimeter

A BGO electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is built for the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) mission. The effect of temperature on the BGO ECAL was investigated with a thermal vacuum experiment. The light output of a BGO crystal depends on temperature significantly. The temperature coefficient of each BGO crystal bar has been calibrated, and a correction method is also presented in this paper.

The calibration and electron energy reconstruction of the BGO ECAL of the DAMPE detector

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space experiment designed to search for dark matter indirectly by measuring the spectra of photons, electrons, and positrons up to 10 TeV. The BGO electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is its main sub-detector for energy measurement. In this paper, the instrumentation and development of the BGO ECAL is briefly described. The calibration on the ground, including the pedestal, minimum ionizing particle (MIP) peak, dynode ratio, and attenuation length with the cosmic rays and beam particles is discussed in detail. Also, the energy reconstruction results of the electrons from the beam test are presented.

A study of energy correction for the electron beam data in the BGO ECAL of the DAMPE

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is an orbital experiment aiming at searching for dark matter indirectly by measuring the spectra of photons, electrons and positrons originating from deep space. The BGO electromagnetic calorimeter is one of the key sub-detectors of the DAMPE, which is designed for high energy measurement with a large dynamic range from 5 GeV to 10 TeV. In this paper, some methods for energy correction are discussed and tried, in order to reconstruct the primary energy of the incident electrons. Different methods are chosen for the appropriate energy ranges. The results of Geant4 simulation and beam test data (at CERN) are presented.

Study on the temperature dependence of BGO light yield

The temperature dependence of BGO coupled with photomultiplier tube R5610A-01 was studied in the range of -30°C~30°C. The temperature coefficient of the BGO and R5610A in whole was tested to be -1.82%. And the temperature coefficient of the gain of the R5610A is -0.44% which was tested in the same situation using a blue LED. Thus the temperature coefficient of BGO's light yield can be evaluated as -1.38%.

Magnetic shield of PMT used in DAMPE electromagnetic calorimeter

The magnetic characteristics of photomultiplier tube R5610A-01 are studied in this paper. The experimental data shows that the gain of R5610A-01 loses about 53% when the magnetic field is 3G along its +X axis. A cylinder of one-layer permalloy strip is able to reduce the effect of 3G magnetic field on the PMT's gain to less than 1%.
