Dirac-Bogoliubov-deGennes quasiparticles in a vortex lattice

In the mixed state of an extreme type-II d-wave superconductor and within a broad regime of weak magnetic fields H_c1 << H << H_c2, the low energy Bogoliubov-deGennes quasiparticles can be effectively described as Dirac fermions moving in the field of singular scalar and vector potentials. Although the effective linearized Hamiltonian operator formally does not depend on the structure of vortex cores, a singular nature of the perturbation requires choosing a self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian by imposing additional boundary conditions at vortex locations. Each vortex is described by a single parameter θthat effectively represents all effects arising from the physics beyond linearization. With the value of θproperly fixed, the resulting density of states of Dirac Hamiltonian exhibits full invariance under arbitrary singular gauge transformations applied at vortex positions. We identify the self-adjoint extensions of the solutions found earlier, within the framework of the linearized Hamiltonian diagonalized by expansion in the plane wave basis, and analyze the relation between fully self-consistent formulation of the problem and the linearized model.

A model of phase fluctuations in a lattice d-wave superconductor: application to the Cooper pair charge-density-wave in underdoped cuprates

We introduce and study an XY-type model of thermal and quantum phase fluctuations in a two-dimensional correlated lattice d-wave superconductor based on the QED3 effective theory of high temperature superconductors. General features of and selected results obtained within this model were reported earlier in an abbreviated format (Z. Tesanovic, cond-mat/0405235). The model is geared toward describing not only the long distance but also the intermediate lengthscale physics of underdoped cuprates. In particular, we elucidate the dynamical origin and investigate specific features of the Cooper pair charge-density-wave (CPCDW), which we argue is the state behind the periodic charge density modulation discovered in recent STM experiments. We illustrate how Mott-Hubbard correlations near half-filling suppress superfluid density and favor an incompressible state which breaks translational symmetry of the atomic lattice. We show how the formation of the CPCDW in such a strongly quantum fluctuating superconductor can be understood as an Abrikosov-Hofstadter problem in a type-II dual superconductor, with the role of the dual magnetic field played by the electron density. The resulting Abrikosov lattice of dual vortices translates into the periodic modulation of the Bogoliubov-deGennes gap function and the electronic density. We compute detailed signatures of various Abrikosov-Hofstadter dual vortex arrays in the single-particle local tunneling density of states. A 4x4 checkerboard-type modulation pattern naturally arises as an energetically favored ground state at and near the x = 1/8 doping and produces good agreement with experimental observations.

Quantum criticality of d-wave quasiparticles and superconducting phase fluctuations

We present finite temperature extension of the QED$_3$ theory of underdoped cuprates. The theory describes nodal quasiparticles whose interactions with quantum proliferated vortex-antivortex pairs are represented by an emergent U(1) gauge field. Finite temperature introduces a scale beyond which the long wavelength fluctuations in the spatial components of vorticity are suppressed. As a result, the spin susceptibility of the pseudogap state is bounded by $T^2$ at low T and crosses over to $\sim T$ at higher $T$, while the low-$T$ electronic specific heat scales as $T^2$, reflecting the thermodynamics of QED$_3$. The Wilson ratio vanishes as $T\to 0$. This non-Fermi liquid behavior originates from two general principles: spin correlations induced by ``gauge'' interactions of quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices and the ``relativistic'' scaling of the T=0 fixed point.

Extreme Type-II Superconductors in a Magnetic Field: A Theory of Critical Fluctuations

A theory of critical fluctuations in extreme type-II superconductors subjected to a finite but weak external magnetic field is presented. It is shown that the standard Ginzburg-Landau representation of this problem can be recast, with help of a novel mapping, as a theory of a new "superconductor", in an effective magnetic field whose overall value is zero, consisting of the original uniform field and a set of neutralizing unit fluxes attached to $N_Φ$ fluctuating vortex lines. The long distance behavior is related to the anisotropic gauge theory in which the original magnetic field plays the role of "charge". The consequences of this "gauge theory" scenario for the critical behavior in high temperature superconductors are explored in detail, with particular emphasis on questions of 3D XY vs. Landau level scaling, physical nature of the vortex "line liquid" and the true normal state, and fluctuation thermodynamics and transport. A "minimal" set of requirements for the theory of vortex-lattice melting in the critical region is also proposed and discussed.

Landau Levels and Quasiparticle Spectrum of Extreme Type-II Superconductors

At high magnetic fields and low temperatures, numerous extreme type-II superconductors exhibit Landau quantization of electronic motion. We present an analytic construction of the quasiparticle spectrum in this regime, based on the high-field expansion. The spectrum is gapless and is separated from the familiar low-field regime by a quantum level-crossing transition. Such low energy excitations should lead to observable effects in thermodynamics and transport.

Density of states of a type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field: Impurity effects

We have calculated the density of states $N(ω)$ of a dirty but homogeneous superconductor in a high magnetic field. We assume a dilute concentration of scalar impurities and find how $N(ω)$ behaves as one crosses from the weak scattering to the strong scattering limit. At low energies, $N(ω)\sim ω^2$ for small values of the impurity concentration and scattering strength. When the disorder becomes stronger than some critical value, a finite density of states is created at the Fermi surface. These results are a consequence of the gapless nature of the quasiparticle excitation spectrum in a high magnetic field.

3D Lowest Landau Level Theory Applied to YBCO Magnetization and Specific Heat Data: Implications for the Critical Behavior in the H-T Plane

We study the applicability of magnetization and specific heat equations derived from a lowest-Landau-level (LLL) calculation, to the high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) materials of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) family. We find that significant information about these materials can be obtained from this analysis, even though the three-dimensional LLL functions are not quite as successful in describing them as the corresponding two-dimensional functions are in describing data for the more anisotropic HTSC Bi- and Tl-based materials. The results discussed include scaling fits, an alternative explanation for data claimed as evidence for a second order flux lattice melting transition, and reasons why 3DXY scaling may have less significance than previously believed. We also demonstrate how 3DXY scaling does not describe the specific heat data of YBCO samples in the critical region. Throughout the paper, the importance of checking the actual scaling functions, not merely scaling behavior, is stressed.

Critical fluctuations in superconductors and the magnetic field penetration depth

The superconducting transition is studied within the one-loop renormalization group in fixed dimension $D=3$ and at the critical point. A tricritical behavior is found, and for $κ> κ_c$, an attractive charged fixed point, distinct from that of a neutral superfluid. The critical exponents of the continuous transition are evaluated, and it is shown that the anomalous dimension of the gauge field equals unity. This implies the proportionality of the magnetic field penetration depth and the superconducting correlation length below the transition. The penetration depth exponent is nonclassical. We argue that it can not be extracted from the dual theory in a straightforward manner since it is not renormalized by fluctuations of the dual field.

First order melting of vortex lattice in strongly type-II three dimensional superconductors

We calculate the transition line of the first-order melting of vortex lattice in a three-dimensional type-II superconductor in fields of several Tesla, using the results from the density-functional theory of vortex melting in two dimensions and the self-consistent Hartree treatment of correlations along the field. The result is in quantitative agreement with experiment. The temperature width of the hysteresis, the latent heat, the Debye-Waller factor and the magnetization at the transition are discussed.

Low-Magnetic Field Critical Behavior in Strongly Type-II Superconductors

A new description is proposed for the low-field critical behavior of type-II superconductors. The starting point is the Ginzburg-Landau theory in presence of an external magnetic field H. A set of fictitious vortex variables and a singular gauge transformation are used to rewrite a finite H Ginzburg-Landau functional in terms of a complex scalar field of zero average vorticity. The continuum limit of the transformed problem takes the form of an H = 0 Ginzburg-Landau functional for a charged field coupled to a fictitious `gauge' potential which arises from long wavelength fluctuations in the background liquid of field-induced vorticity. A possibility of a novel phase transition involving zero vorticity degrees of freedom and formation of a uniform condensate is suggested. A similarity to the superconducting [Higgs] electrodynamics and the nematic-smectic-A transition in liquid crystals is noted. The experimental situation is discussed.

THE ANOMALOUS DIFFUSION IN HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD AND THE QUASIPARTICLE DENSITY OF STATES

We consider a disordered two-dimensional electronic system in the limit of high magnetic field at the metal-insulator transition. Density of states close to the Fermi level acquires a divergent correction to the lowest order in electron-electron interaction and shows a new power-law dependence on the energy, with the power given by the anomalous diffusion exponent $η$. This should be observable in the tunneling experiment with double-well GaAs heterostructure of the mobility $\propto 10^{4}V/s$ at temperatures of $\propto 10 mK$ and voltages of $\propto 1 μV$.

New Phases of High Temperature Superconductors in High Magnetic Field

Fluctuation behavior of high temperature superconductors in high magnetic field is studied within the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Landau level degeneracy of Cooper pairs enhances fluctuations which destroy the familiar Abrikosov vortex lattice for D=2,3. Instead, a charge-density wave of Cooper pairs (SCDW) is the new low-temperature phase of the theory. SCDW has no condensate, but differs from the normal state by a periodic modulation of the Cooper pair density. In presence of disorder, the Abrikosov state is revived and both superconducting and density-wave phases are possible.

The High-Field Superconducting Transition induced by Correlated Disorder

The "glassy" superconducting transition at high magnetic fields can be induced by columnar disorder. A model is proposed in which the thermodynamics of Bose condensation of Cooper pairs into the lowest Landau-level eigenstate of the random potential can be solved exactly. The solution reflects a peculiar character of the high-field limit: for example, the effective dimensionality of the transition is shown to be a function of the magnetic field.

Density-functional theory of freezing of vortex-liquid in quasi two-dimensional superconductors

We present a theory of vortex liquid-to-solid transition in homogeneous quasi 2D superconductors. The free energy is written as a functional l of density of zeroes of the fluctuating order parameter. The transition is weakly first-order and well below the Hc2(T) line. Transition temperature, discontinuities of the average Abrikosov ratio and of the average superfluid density, the Debay-Waller factor and the latent heat are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. The density is only weakly modulated in the "vortex-solid" phase, consistent with the density-wave behavior.
