Basic representation theorems of forms

We study maximal representations of nonnegative sesquilinear forms in real or complex Hilbert spaces, that are not necessarily closed or even closable. We associate positive self-adjoint operators with such forms, in a sense similar to Kato's representation theorems. In particular, we give a brief proof of the Friedrichs extension of a densely defined positive operator.

Extensions of positive symmetric operators and Krein's uniqueness criteria

We revise Krein's extension theory of positive symmetric operators. Our approach using factorization through an auxiliary Hilbert space has several advantages: it can be applied to non-densely defined transformations and it works in both real and complex spaces. As an application of the results and the construction we consider positive self-adjoint extensions of the modulus square operator $T^*T$ of a densely defined linear transformation $T$ and bounded self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator. Krein's results on the uniqueness of positive (respectively, norm preserving) self-adjoint extensions are also revised.

Canonical graph contractions of linear relations on Hilbert spaces

Given a closed linear relation $T$ between two Hilbert spaces $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal K$, the corresponding first and second coordinate projections $P_T$ and $Q_T$ are both linear contractions from $T$ to $\mathcal H$, and to $\mathcal K$, respectively. In this paper we investigate the features of these graph contractions. We show among others that $P_T^{}P_T^*=(I+T^*T)^{-1}$, and that $Q_T^{}Q_T^*=I-(I+TT^*)^{-1}$. The ranges $\operatorname{ran} P_T^{*}$ and $\operatorname{ran} Q_T^{*}$ are proved to be closely related to the so called `regular part' of $T$. The connection of the graph projections to Stone's decomposition of a closed linear relation is also discussed.

Range-kernel characterizations of operators which are adjoint of each other

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a pair $S,T$ of Hilbert space operators in order that they satisfy $S^*=T$ and $T^*=S$. As a main result we establish an improvement of von Neumann's classical theorem on the positive self-adjointness of $S^*S$ for two variables. We also give some new characterizations of self-adjointness and skew-adjointness of operators, not requiring their symmetry or skew-symmetry, respectively.

Lebesgue type decompositions for linear relations and Ando's uniqueness criterion

A linear relation, i.e., a multivalued operator $T$ from a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ to a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak K}$ has Lebesgue type decompositions $T=T_{1}+T_{2}$, where $T_{1}$ is a closable operator and $T_{2}$ is an operator or relation which is singular. There is one canonical decomposition, called the Lebesgue decomposition of $T$, whose closable part is characterized by its maximality among all closable parts in the sense of domination. All Lebesgue type decompositions are parametrized, which also leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of such decompositions. Similar results are given for weak Lebesgue type decompositions, where $T_1$ is just an operator without being necessarily closable. Moreover, closability is characterized in different useful ways. In the special case of range space relations the above decompositions may be applied when dealing with pairs of (nonnegative) bounded operators and nonnegative forms as well as in the classical framework of positive measures.

On the adjoint of Hilbert space operators

In general, it is a non trivial task to determine the adjoint $S^*$ of an unbounded operator $S$ acting between two Hilbert spaces. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a given operator $T$ to be identical with $S^*$. In our considerations, a central role is played by the operator matrix $M_{S,T}=\left(\begin{array}{cc} I & -T\\ S & I\end{array}\right)$. Our approach has several consequences such as characterizations of closed, normal, skew- and selfadjoint, unitary and orthogonal projection operators in real or complex Hilbert spaces. We also give a self-contained proof of the fact that $T^*T$ always has a positive selfadjoint extension.

On the uniqueness of the Lebesgue decomposition of normal states on $B(H)$

The non-commutative theory of the Lebesgue-type decomposition of positive functionals is originated with S. P. Gudder. Although H. Kosaki's counterexample shows that the decomposition is not unique in general, the complete characterization of uniqueness is still not known. Using the famous operator-decomposition of T. Ando, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for uniqueness in the particular case when the underlying algebra is $B(H)$, the $C^*$-algebra of all continuous linear operators on a Hilbert space $H$. Namely, given a normal state $f$, the $f$-Lebesgue decomposition of any other normal state is unique if and only if the representing trace class operator of $f$ has finite rank. Some recent results tell that the decomposition is unique over a large class of commutative algebras. Our characterization demonstrates that the lack of commutativity is not the real cause of non-uniqueness.

A characterization of positive normal functionals on the full operator algebra

Using the recent theory of Krein--von Neumann extensions for positive functionals we present several simple criteria to decide whether a given positive functional on the full operator algebra is normal. We also characterize those functionals defined on the left ideal of finite rank operators that have a normal extension.

Adjoint of sums and products of operators in Hilbert spaces

We provide sufficient and necessary conditions guaranteeing equations $(A+B)^*=A^*+B^*$ and $(AB)^*=B^*A^*$ concerning densely defined unbounded operators $A,B$ between Hilbert spaces. We also improve the perturbation theory of selfadjoint and essentially selfadjoint operators due to Nelson, Kato, Rellich, and Wüst. Our method involves the range of two-by-two matrices of the form $M_{S,T}=\left(\begin{array}{cc}\!\! I & -T\!\!\\ \!\! S& I\!\!\end{array}\right)$ that makes it possible to treat real and complex Hilbert spaces jointly.

On the sum between a closable operator $T$ and a $T$-bounded operator

We provide several perturbation theorems regarding closable operators on a real or complex Hilbert space. In particular we extend some classical results due to Hess--Kato, Kato--Rellich and Wüst. Our approach involves ranges of matrix operators of the form $\left(\begin{array}{cc}\!\! I & A\!\!\\ \!\! -B& I\!\!\end{array}\right)$.

Operators having selfadjoint squares

The main goal of this paper is to show that a (not necessarily densely defined or closed) symmetric operator $A$ acting on a real or complex Hilbert space is selfadjoint exactly when $I+A^2$ is a full range operator.

Extensions of positive operators and functionals

We consider linear operators defined on a subspace of a complex Banach space into its topological antidual acting positively in a natural sense. The goal of this paper is to investigate of this kind of operators. The main theorem is a constructive characterization of the bounded positive extendibility of these linear mappings. From this result we can characterize the compactness of the extended operators and that when the positive extensions have closed ranges. As a main application of our general extension theorem, we present some necessary and sufficient conditions that a positive functional defined on a left ideal of a Banach $^*$-algebra admits a representable positive extension. The approach we use here is completely constructive.

A Short-type Decomposition Of Forms

The main purpose of this paper is to present a decomposition theorem for nonnegative sesquilinear forms. The key notion is the short of a form to a linear subspace. This is a generalization of the well-known operator short defined by M. G. Krein. A decomposition of a form into a shorted part and a singular part (with respect to an other form) will be called short-type decomposition. As applications, we present some analogous results for bounded positive operators acting on a Hilbert space; for additive set functions on a ring of sets; and for representable positive functionals on a $\ast$-algebra.
